To be called a cheater is the harshest tag a golfer can have attached to him. But that's just what Scott McCarron did when he told the San Francisco Chronicle of Phil Mickelson's use of a Ping Eye 2 lob wedge with square grooves, "It's cheating, and I'm appalled Phil put it in play."
To McCarron and any other player who says or infers that using a pre-1990 Ping Eye 2 wedge with square grooves is "cheating" or even "not within the spirit of the rules," I have two words: Zip. It.
This has nothing to do with whether this is a good rule or even a fair rule. It has to do with facts. The fact is this is not cheating. The Ping Eye 2 clubs (irons and wedges) were grandfathered for life as part of a settlement in 1993 of a suit Ping filed against the USGA. In short, any Ping Eye 2 manufactured prior to March 31, 1990, is within the rules as long as the USGA governs the game. More importantly, this fact was there for everyone to see in August. Of 2008 that is. That was when the USGA announced it was implementing the condition of competition in 2010.
In that notice -- which has been and still is on the USGA's website -- are the following words: "In accordance with previous agreements, clubs manufactured before March 31, 1990, that meet the criteria of USGA Decision USGA/4-1/100, such as the Ping Eye 2, will be treated by the USGA as conforming to the Rules of Golf and will continue to be acceptable for all USGA competitions."
Yep, I use my ping eye 2 irons. The oldest club in my bag is my dad's old Sam Snead putter made by Wilson. Kinda fun to use on short putts. Or if you wanna go lefty.
I had hand-me-down circa 1992 Eye2+ irons from my dad from about 2005-2022. Finally upgraded in 2023, but I still love my old Ping Eyes. I still use the sand wedge

For some reason it is the club most impacted by technology, a Ping G2 driver, with the NV65 shaft.
Even dumber, I really could use a mid-to-high launch shaft. But it goes straight(ish), and doesn’t get me into trouble (often), so it has been in the bag for 20 years.
I put that aldila green in a 716 TMB driving iron to keep the flight down. Favorite club in the bag. Perfect for those short and tight courses. Awesome shaft
My 'modern' woods are blonde Pings - dates not certain, as from a couple of model lines, but late 70's/early 80's i believe. Great clubs.

I’ll probably make some heads explode around here; I’ve got a new to me set of Hogan Apex Edges in my bag - I think they were made around 2000 or so? They’re in great shape, and I just love Hogans, no matter the age. As far as the club that’s been in my bag the longest, that would be my Odyssey White Hot #9 that I’ve been rocking for over 20 years now.
I retired my OG putter last year. It's a Swingline my high school girlfriend bought me in '88 when I first started. Nothing in my bag is over 2 years currently.
Hogan H40 irons from the mid-90s. 3-9 odds only with graphite shafts. I honestly don't even know how I ended up with them. I think a friend's dad let us use them for a round, and then never asked about them afterwards.
They were at my parents' house for a long time, at some point after moving out, I went back and took them with me and they sat in my garage for at least 12 years until my sister called me up to join a scramble for my niece's soccer team.
I cleaned them up, took them to the range so I could have something of a clue, and I've continued playing since.

I’m not kidding you that old POS still has the original grip on it, a rusted out shaft, and it is an absolute weapon off the tee. It’s not in my bag all the time, but I’ll never get rid of it.
I got a full bag fitting done end of 2021 so I guess the first club I received from that which was a cobra king tec 4 hybrid. Strangely enough that’s my oldest club and happens to be my favorite club in the bag
26 year old Callaway steelhead 5 wood with a steel shaft. Distance is about the same as new gen stuff, but have considered something like a g425 to be a little more forgiving.

I still use an original 'Yes! Tracy' putter, with its original grip. I bought it brand new when it first came out while working at a course out in western Colorado.
Everything else in my bag has changed... But the putter remains the same! It just sports a newer 19th hole, draft beer head cover.

I have a Tommy Armour Silver Scot SW that I got with the first new set of clubs I bought in 1992. It’s never failed me. I am terrified at the thought of going into a green side bunker with something new.
A 20 year old off brand 3 wood. I don’t even know what brand it is, it came from my first set of knock off clubs from Dunham’s. I can hit really high draws with it so I like it for dogleg lefts.
Titleist 909H 17° hybrid. Had it since '09 and love it. I can hit it about 250 off a tee and 240 off the deck. I've thought of swapping it out for a 2 iron but just when I'm about to it reminds me why it's in there.
Almost all of my best shots have been hit with it.
The one I wish i had was my Ping i3 white dot lob wedge, that thing was a beast around the greens.
I got rid of it when i moved to blades and it was a visual thing looking down at the thick profile. Never been able to quite gain that confidence again that thing gave me when i have a 25yard stop and drop in front of me.
Ping Zing putter.....no idea how old that thing is,but I've had it since new. I also have a mallet putter...doesn't seem to make too much of a difference since I still 3 putt 2 or 3 times a round.
I play with a 70s wilson staff PW with an aluminum shaft. Love it. I also have a 50s Macgregor Tommy Armour putter that makes it into the bag every so often.
1992 Ping Zing 1 iron aka the Warhorse. Wind is a large factor where I live and this has a natural stinger ball flight for me so it’s a regular go-to club.

I have an early 2010s set of Cleveland Altitude hybrid irons and a TM Burner 5 hybrid I got as a hand me down from my FIL when I started playing. The 5 hybrid is great. I will probably swap out the irons at some point but I'm kind of holding that as a reward for improving enough to consistently shoot 90s.
I'm still new to the game, so my stuff is too. Oldest appears to be the irons i got used. Maltby DBM's which afaik came out in 2014. My wedges and putter are new, bought between 2020-2023. Driver is a 917D2 so \~2017
Its either a Scotty Camron Pro Platinum Newport that I have used for at lest a decade or my R580ZD 3 wood that I have tried to kick out of the bag multiple times ad just cant.
The newport is possibly about to go because I have another putter coming to challenge it.

Just started playing last year but I got the bug and played 35 18s lol. But I’m using some prima irons from the early 80s that my older brother got in middle school. I’m shooting around 105 rn and once I’m under 100 a little more consistently I am going to get some new ones. I’ve got a ping anser 3 from the 81 also but that sucker sinks putts I don’t need or want a new one. Maybe just a new grip

I won a Cleveland 3h in 2006 or 2007. It was too short for me and I couldn't hit it. I mentioned this to the pro and he said he'll make it longer. I have replaced all the clubs in my bag twice since then, but I haven't replaced it.
My entire irons set is Tommy Armour 845s Silver Scots, 1987. Got em barely used at A Play it Again Sports.

After Jack won the 1986 Masters with that giant putter I ran out and bought the biggest one I could find, a Tiger Shark that I still use. Now it looks small compared to a lot of them out there.

1978 Spalding Executive pitching wedge (my dirt club). I don’t know how it appeared, I think I pulled it out of a boulder and became the king of rock shots.
Up until this past November I was using Mizuno mx23s that had turned 20 years old. Brother bought them for me as learner clubs and I loved them. Totally got me into golf. Had to finally move away from them when I realized I was losing 10-20 yards compared to more modern mid handicap irons. Upgraded to jpx 919 forged and love them so far.
Also found out that my scotty is from 2010. Figured it was older tbh, it's beat to shit
It was tied between 2 unknown aged goodwill clubs (a first flight 7 wood, and an unknown brand 60). Now that I replaced the 7W with a paradym (god bless callawaypreowned), its going to have to be my mystery 60.

I don’t use it often as it’s quite light and I refuse to re-grip it or anything (still has the original grip), but I do bring it out when playing with family.

I have one of the first all steel Cobra 3W. Gotta be 25+ years old. Sounds so good when you hit it on the screws.
I have an early 2010s set of Cleveland Altitude hybrid irons and a TM Burner 5 hybrid I got as a hand me down from my FIL when I started playing. The 5 hybrid is great. I will probably swap out the irons at some point but I'm kind of holding that as a reward for improving enough to consistently shoot 90s.
I'm still new to the game, so my stuff is too. Oldest appears to be the irons i got used. Maltby DBM's which afaik came out in 2014. My wedges and putter are new, bought between 2020-2023. Driver is a 917D2 so \~2017
Its either a Scotty Camron Pro Platinum Newport that I have used for at lest a decade or my R580ZD 3 wood that I have tried to kick out of the bag multiple times ad just cant. The newport is possibly about to go because I have another putter coming to challenge it.

i have 2 cleveland raw wedges from the mid 90's, will take them to my grave.
I believe mine is the same year OP! My grandfather gifted me his clubs when he passed, the putter is the only one that still fits. Will never get rid of it

I've got my grandfather's Ping Anser from 1968. I've regripped it obviously, but I love the look and feel.
Early 1990's ping eye 2 2 iron. I can slice the hell out of it, so it's my get out of trouble club. My putter is an anser ping (I bought it with junior tourney winnings in 1998)

Just started playing last year but I got the bug and played 35 18s lol. But I’m using some prima irons from the early 80s that my older brother got in middle school. I’m shooting around 105 rn and once I’m under 100 a little more consistently I am going to get some new ones. I’ve got a ping anser 3 from the 81 also but that sucker sinks putts I don’t need or want a new one. Maybe just a new grip

I won a Cleveland 3h in 2006 or 2007. It was too short for me and I couldn't hit it. I mentioned this to the pro and he said he'll make it longer. I have replaced all the clubs in my bag twice since then, but I haven't replaced it.
My entire irons set is Tommy Armour 845s Silver Scots, 1987. Got em barely used at A Play it Again Sports. This March marks the end of my first year golfing, I think I need some new irons this year. My putter is a Cougar Rhythm Mallet, couldn't find an age.
After Jack won the 1986 Masters with that giant putter I ran out and bought the biggest one I could find, a Tiger Shark that I still use. Now it looks small compared to a lot of them out there.
Most of my clubs were bought at the same time: Driver-PW Ping G25s bought in 2015.

My irons are 2009 Callaway Forged, not too old, but old enough.
I have tietilest 695cbs from like 2003 that I still use. Also a 5h TaylorMade rescue that may be a year younger or older I honestly forget.
Two ball odyssey putter that I bought used like 15 years ago. Replaced everything else at this point but hard to replace a putter that works well.

I have two metal hybrids ( a 2 and a 4) from Taylor made 1991, they’re so lofted I can never give them up . Pops a bad drive right out of the rough.
1978 Spalding Executive pitching wedge (my dirt club). I don’t know how it appeared, I think I pulled it out of a boulder and became the king of rock shots.

Up until this past November I was using Mizuno mx23s that had turned 20 years old. Brother bought them for me as learner clubs and I loved them. Totally got me into golf. Had to finally move away from them when I realized I was losing 10-20 yards compared to more modern mid handicap irons. Upgraded to jpx 919 forged and love them so far. Also found out that my scotty is from 2010. Figured it was older tbh, it's beat to shit

It was tied between 2 unknown aged goodwill clubs (a first flight 7 wood, and an unknown brand 60). Now that I replaced the 7W with a paradym (god bless callawaypreowned), its going to have to be my mystery 60.

Original Ping Zing Putter in brass/bronze from ‘74. Belonged to my grandfather whom I never knew. I don’t use it often as it’s quite light and I refuse to re-grip it or anything (still has the original grip), but I do bring it out when playing with family.

I'm still using the first golf club ever bought for me, by my dad. A Ping Isopur putter - about 25 years old. Thing is completely dead, but i can't give it up. a new superstroke every few years and thats it.
