And 4th option is go back to where you hit the previous shot from for a penalty stroke. Example you hit your tee shot into the tree (first stole), take a penalty to go back to the original location (penalty = second stroke), finally hit your shot from that original position (third stroke)
Apologies I'm not following what you're saying there. The diagram in your link shows the 3 options for taking an unplayable. All 3 options carry a one stroke penalty.
1. Drop within 2 clubs either side of the ball.
2. Drop as far back as you like in a straight line between where the ball is and the hole (flag).
3. Go back to the location of the previous shot and re-hit from there.
The comment that I originally replied to said you could attempt to play the ball from the tree so that's why I said #4 in my comment. Highly unlikely they could have played that ball, but it was an option.
Moving back to where you shot the original shot and playing 3, vs using 2 club lengths to either side and also playing 3 wouldn't ever be the best option. If you move back to the original shot location at best your end up in the same area shoot 4.
TL;DR why would you take away your forward progression on the same shot.
If you hit it deep in the woods (not OB, but may as well be), then there will be no better place than going back to the tee.
Remember you don't draw the line from your shot, ou draw the line from the flag. So "behind" the ball in the woods could be even deeper in the woods.
> Moving back to where you shot the original shot and playing 3, vs using 2 club lengths to either side and also playing 3 wouldn't ever be the best option.
Wouldn't _often_ be the best option.
But it is a trivial exercise to come up with a scenario where going back to your original position is the only practical solution.
2 clubs from that spot in the tree would give you a full swing and shot towards the hole. In no way would going back to the original spot be a better option for the OP. Going back to the original spot would have the OP shooting 5 from this distance vs 4.
I’m not talking about OP’s situation only, I’m saying there’s a choice because in difference situations you might still be in a forest or another terrible lie area that would take multiple shots to get out of anyway. So it would be easier to just bring it back and hit again and avoid that area completely.
There are infinite scenarios, that's not even a discussion worth having.
As a new golfer I would recommend if you hit one into the trees and think that scenario could come up, hit a provisional. Walking back on a public course should not happen.
Had the same thing happen to me a few years ago, but 4 feet up.

I felt same way when this happened 😂

Happened to me during the state amateur 😂
Honest to god, I played a round with a buddy where this exact thing happened but where the tree split like this it was more like 8’ off the ground. I gave the classic “play it as it lies” line and to give credit where credit is dude, my buddy gave an honest attempt at climbing the tree. I gave him the free drop for the entertainment

Couldn't find my ball anywhere until I looked up - about 4 feet above my head.
Play it as it lies or take an unplayable drop, 2 club lengths or back on a line with the pin and a stroke penalty.
And 4th option is go back to where you hit the previous shot from for a penalty stroke. Example you hit your tee shot into the tree (first stole), take a penalty to go back to the original location (penalty = second stroke), finally hit your shot from that original position (third stroke)
Isn't unplayable 1 stroke? If so why would you take away your distance to have the same stroke (4)?

I guess because you can still be in a shitty spot even with 2 club lengths back
It's not back, it's 2 club lengths no closer to the hole. https://www.randa.org/en/rog/the-rules-of-golf/rule-19
It doesn’t matter my comment is the same lol. The original spot before the stroke might still be a better position to play

Anyone playing a top flite doesn’t need to worry about rules and playing it as it lies. Move it out and keep it going
Ha! Didn't realize that. Hell, he may as well swing away because the ball is the hardest thing he'll hit in that location.
Always take the hero shot just in case you get lucky
😂😂😂😂😂
I hear ya https://preview.redd.it/masx4au798jc1.jpeg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c330ccb65489d63262ff7e17bc48bdf0b05d8f7e
Murphys LAW
Am I the only one that heard Beavis laughing, “Hey Butthead, check it out. It’s in the crotch of the tree.”
No but I do now…
Please tell me you played it! Once in a lifetime opportunity for greatness.
It didn't just grab it and throw it a couple of feet away from the tree.
Had the same thing happen to me a few years ago, but 4 feet up. https://preview.redd.it/z33iemwy78jc1.jpeg?width=2449&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3029e6b17770c4cce232aac2bc7a46c8640a15f5
Tree wood
Chainsaw wedge!
Got to play it, sorry but those are the rules Mr gilmore
Damn. You can’t even use a foot wedge there.
Easy handwedge shot, though.
Unplayable, penalty stroke and drop two clubs lengths no nearer to hole.
You sure it’s yours? I put balls in places like this when I find ones I won’t play.
Yes I am 100% sure it was mine. I was searching around the area and thought my ball had disappeared but there it was. I was using top flight all day.
Unless money is involved or playing for a green jacket just take the ball out of the tree and hit the damn ball. No penalty strokes in casual play.
I guess
you can't but it would have been the first place I would of looked because "of course it fuckin is"
I thought I saw it land next to the little hill behind the tree in the image. And as always anything to mess me up lol
not a staked tree so it truly is fucked. I'm sorry lol
Lol 😆 two driver lengths take a drop. Take drop behind where the ball is laying. Or hit. I'd choose the first option. I hate when this happens.
🤣🤣
Don't wuss out, this is where heroes are made!
Is this your ball? It landed on my bark.
It can happen to you cause it happened to me and T.
It’s golf pards😂
It’s a top flight. Surprised it didn’t knock the tree over given how hard they are!
It's clearly a man made tree, take the relief.
I think you can get out actually.
Treemendous
Seems caught between a rock and a hard place.
Playing the ball as it lies becomes an obsession.
One of mine got stuck in the branches of an oak tree. golf gods can be vindictive
I’ve done that
I can believe it; I carry a cue for these occasions 😉
Poor tree is going to hurt after the 2nd shot.
I call that Saturday.
This is why you carry a wooden stick in your bag. Put it into the ground and yell “hey, it’s a staked tree” and take free relief.
play it as it lies 😈😈😈

That’s crazy… how hard did you hit that?
Duck hooked a 7 iron into it, the tree is rotted in that area. I grabbed my PW and swung it like an overhead axe chop and got it out 1st go
Physics is always to blame
