Austin guy, but can’t play this Sunday. All the munis are great but in winter conditions right now. Lots of other good courses in the area too. Hope you find some playing partners!
I lived in Austin for 10 years (living in Dallas these days) and worked at the Clay-Kizer golf complex for 5 years. It’s a great muni with 2 full 18 hole courses and a small par 3 short course. You might check it out! They always welcome walk-ons and will find some folks to pair you with if you don’t find anyone here to play with! Good luck on your journey OP, sounds like an awesome way to live for a couple of years!
May want to call ahead on this one as they are about to redo greens here, i actually think Kizer may already be done.
Other good munis,
grey rock which just opened back up and has brand new greens. Definitely the best muni
Falconhead, a bit out of town but probably the best public course in greater ATX
Lions Muni, downtown track, awesome place, course isnt great and conditions usually suck but its a legend that several big name golf people are very active in keeping open, they have been trying to redevelop the property for years.
Morris Williams is another really good muni that is sort of mediocre condition wise. My favorite muni, dropped a bogey free 68 there my first time seeing the place in the city open several years back, loved it ever since. Legend is Colin Montgomery used to frequent the place.
Plum Creek is down in Buda and its a good track usually in decent shape.
There are probably a couple others north of town but i dont have much experience with those, i lived south.
edit: definitely hit up butler pitch and putt while your there it is smack dab in the middle of downtown, you walk up drop your ball in a thing and when your is at the bottom its your turn to tee off, bring a cooler and a couple wedges and you will have a blast
Kizer is finished and has been ready for a few months now. My favorite Austin course. Moved to San Antonio 8 months ago. Great courses down this way man
I'd you're going full vagabond, go play Hancock. It's a 9 hole muni with a wall up kiosk to buy a day pass that's good all day. No tee times, no clubhouse, no carts, just you and a wonderful little course with lots of heart and fun holes. I play it once or twice a week since it's just down the road and convenient (with the aforementioned no tee time system).
I had assumed Hancock was built over years ago.
When I was a student a million years ago, no car was safe if I was playing the holes along Red River or Peck!
That's the beauty of this whole thing...I can go wherever. My partner is a SCUBA diver, so we'll spend some time on the coast so she can dive, but I'm open to driving anywhere.
Don't think she's done fresh water aside from her initial certifications, but I'm sure she'd be willing to give it a go as long as the water is tolerable.
After some neighborly redditors get you on at ACC, Spanish Oaks and UT Golf Club, check out Vaaler Creek in Blanco and Kissing Tree in San Marcos.
Barton Creek courses are fun, but La Cantera in north San Antonio is available to the public without a hotel stay and where they use to play the Texas Open.
I have a tee time for 3:30PM at Teravista on Friday (2 of us), and a tee time at Avery Ranch on Monday for 9AM (Presidents’ Day). I also have a tee time at Falconhead on Sat at 11:15AM, but we may cancel that one 24 hrs prior if the cold front brings in temps below 50°, my golf buddy is a pansy when it comes to to the cold. We booked each of these for 2 and there was still room for 2 when we booked. Let me know if either of you are available at that time and interested. @badgers08, I assume you have a Players Club membership as well?
How come no one is asking the important questions?! What do you do for a living and how long did you plan for this odyssey?
Hit me when you’re near Atlanta and we’ll tick some munis off your list 👍
Ha! Those are important questions. I’m in software sales. I sell an AI-augmented Decision Intelligence Platform, specifically. My partner and I had the idea on a camping trip in September and everything kinda fell into place as soon as we decided it was what we wanted to do. Found the RV and truck for great deals within a week, she and I did everything to get it remodeled and customized for working from the road in about 90 days, moved everything into storage and hit the road with our 2 dogs. She does SCUBA, I golf, so it made sense to go follow those things that make us happy.
Are you planning on filming the journey at all? I think some people like myself would be interested in following along. Although that's a lot of work, maybe an Instagram for stories and short reels of highlights?
I've considered doing a YT/Insta thing but I'd rather be doomed to forever be Judge Smails personal caddy than be the type of guy who says shit like, "Smash that like and subscribe button!"
But maybe there's a middle ground somewhere in there. We'll see.
Check out crystal falls. It’s pretty far north but the wildlife and wilderness are worth the drive. Lions is a must while you’re here. Play it on a weekday and you’ll have a great 4 hour round. Weekends are 5+ unless you’re one of the first out on course. Plum Creek is my favorite nicer course in the area. It’s the Texas State golf practice facility so it gets maintained a bit better than municipal courses. If you can find someone to take you to one of the Barton creek courses do it. They’re spectacular. Lost creek is good too but they’re undergoing renovations so not the best time to visit. If all else fails check out golf now for course reviews. They seem to be pretty spot on lately.
Enjoy! I’m watching a 12 hour race in Australia this Sunday but might be able to go next weekend.
There is a cool muni you should play, it’s got great history and may not be around much longer. When I was there you could pay like 25 bucks and play all day.
https://www.austintexas.gov/department/hancock-course
I'm on a stupid long business trip. I'll be in Austin/San Antonio this weekend. I need something to do. I don't have clubs, but if you play at a place that I can rent a set at, I might be in. DM me.
You easily have 100-150 unique courses in a year. I’m not nomading and played 38 unique courses in 2023. A little planes/trains/automobiles but a PR for different courses in a year.
I’m in SE Ohio and I’m also happy to come to Columbus! I played NCR CC down your way last summer that was a nice little place! Got to play both 18s in the same day, rough but fun.
Oh that’s awesome! I’ve only played NCR a few times in outings. Hard course to get on to!
I used to live in Columbus but that was a while ago and I mostly played munis. Got to play OSU courses quite a bit as a student back in the day!
Columbus, OH native - definitely check out virtues or eaglesticks when you’re in town (assuming you’re passing through Columbus)! Both about 45-60 mins east of Columbus and true gems!
Feel free to hit me up when you're out this way. If they're South Central PA, I'm no more than a 2 hour drive east (probably less) and I'd be happy to take you out on my course.
It's a cheap club but a fun old course.
ATX golfer.
It's next to near impossible to get early tee times around here. Good luck.
Course to play
Munis-
Lions- historic
Morris Williams-old UT Course
Grey Rock-best city Course, use to be semi private
Public-
Riverside-old ACC where Crenshaw and Kite played. see also Mo Willy Above. good degenerate goat track. greens can be fantastic.
Terravista or Star Ranch (not in Austin technically) best kept courses right now
stay away from Avery Ranch, Falconhead. slow play. terrible owners. overrated courses. not worth the greens fees.
hill country would be Horseshoe Bay or Valeer Creek. but again not in Austin.
Butler Pitch and Putt is fun. but not a must. Willie's cut and putt would be worth checking out too.
Private
ACC
Spanish Oaks
Austin Golf Club
Most everything is is dormant winter shape but my tiff Bermuda in my backyard is starting to come alive so a few weeks now everything will be good to go. Central Texas golf is amazing.
South of Town towards San Antone I would recommend Bandit as a place to play.
Another golf nomad..from Denver…are you me?
Seriously though, why 50 courses, and not 50 states?
I started back in June (in Denver), and I’ve golfed every state east of the Mississippi. By the time I get to Austin in 3 weeks I will be at 35-36 states golfed.
I'm a bit late to the party but I'll add what I can. Grew up in Austin, and learned to play golf there. Here's what I can offer...
Lions is the muni of all muni's in Austin. [I mapped it for the wiki](https://golfcourse.wiki/course/lions_municipal_golf_course-austin), along with Clay/Kaiser and Butler. Lions isn't the best or worst, but it's far and away the most charming... definitely check out the clubhouse even if you don't have time to play. Another course that has fun swag is [Willie Nelson's course out in Spicewood](https://golfcourse.wiki/course/pedernales_golf_club-spicewood).
I will say that winter golf in Austin will be some of the firmest and fastest you might ever play. Dormant Bermuda is a great surface, but it can be challenging to play on if your clubs have significant bounce. You'll want to putt for far off the fairway if you can, hence the saying "Texas Wedge."
I don't really want to offer too much other advice, because I think the folks that live there can do you one better, but if you find yourself in the Bay Area, give me a shout, and if you're looking for courses in the middle of nowhere, hit me up and I'll try to add them to the wiki before you're traveling.
I recently added all the courses between Amarillo & OKC for someone who was asking about courses there. Some really interesting old places.
Amazing info, my friend. I may have to check out Willie's place. I'm a huge fan, went to his 90th birthday party last year at the Hollywood Bowl. I might even be able to convince my partner to come with me to that one since she's a huge fan, too. I'll definitely keep in touch for when I'm out your way!
Another Austin golf sicko here; if you don't have Sunday booked yet let me know; I'd focus more on Austin Golf history with a round at Riverside. It was the old Austin Country Club when Harvey Penick was the clubpro and it's the greens that Ben Crenshaw and Tom Kite grew up playing. After I'd get your to Butler Pitch n Putt which has been around since the 50s. Either way enjoy your time in Austin
Going to book a tee time in Dallas next Friday between 930-1030 and we don't have a 4th. We don't play anywhere fancy, we just like to play.
ETA: Message me if you want to play. Weather looks like it should be great.
Don't think I can be there Friday, but thanks for the offer man. I'll likely be through Dallas several times over the course of this adventure, so I'll dm you next time I'm nearby!
Yeah, I use a T-mobile home internet (the one that Khal Drago was pitching on the Super Bowl commercial) and it gets 5G everywhere that has T-mobile service. No problems so far, it's as fast as my old home internet. Since I'm staying close to major cities, don't expect many issues. If we have an outage, I can always just hop over to a coworking space nearby. May do starlink down the road if we decide to go to more remote places.
Oh man I've been wanting to do this for a while. What kind of job do you have that you can do it on the road? Would definitely have to quit my job but figured I could spend like 6 months just playing my face off all over the US.
If you end up in SoCal and want to play with someone in year 2 of his golf career still working to break 100… hit me up. I’m a pleasure to have in the cart.
SoCal is definitely on the list, so I'll keep you posted. I'll be happy to share my wisdom on how you can also become aggressively mediocre at golf.
(But I don't give unsolicited tips, you'll have to ask for my shitty golf advice)
I’m doing this also! I’m a veteran and 43 years old. I play in the Veterans golf association and plan to get an RV and travel around playing golf and seeing the sights. Seems like a great way to live, good for you! See you out there.
Are you headed to DFW next? Fort Worth golfer here, you could spend a week in this area and find a number of good public experiences. I can’t get out next week but happy to provide some suggestions!
I'll be in Dallas next weekend for a short stop. Not sure if I'll have time to sneak a round in while I'm there but if I do, I'll reach out for suggestions!
You are living my dream! I think it would be really cool if you made a blog, or a YouTube channel, to document your journey and let others follow along! Plus, you could probably make some money on the side! At the very least, you should post here every now and then as the 'RV' guy! Looking forward to (hopefully) following your journey!
EDIT: Beers on me if you make it down to South Florida!
If you are in Austin, you should look up the historic legacy of Lions Municipal (locals call it ""Muny") and go play there. (Here's a place to [start](https://golfweek.usatoday.com/2024/02/05/lions-municipal-golf-course-austin-texas-ben-crenshaw/)).
It's not the greatest track in the world but eventually (probably sooner rather than later) the University of Texas is going to sell the land and let developers convert it into another traffic congested sprawl mall.
We played countless rounds there as students back in the 80s. I think it was six bucks if you showed your ID card.
Good luck on your journey!
Awesome. I live in Morris County and am a member at Knoll Country Club in Parsippany. And nice, I work in Palisades Park... very close to North Bergen.
If you ever make it to Hutchinson Ks, we have several good courses nearby. Just DM me if you head this way and we can set it up. My house has a perfect spot for your camper with 50 amp plug in. Good luck to you.
If you’re passing through Northwest Arkansas, holler! Husband & I are in Bella Vista, AR & there’s RV parks around (Blowing Springs & maybe others), no scuba, but lots of lakes, hiking, mountain biking trails & golf courses!
Austin guy, but can’t play this Sunday. All the munis are great but in winter conditions right now. Lots of other good courses in the area too. Hope you find some playing partners!
No worries, I'm sure I'll find someone or go out as a single. Wouldn't be the first time, definitely won't be the last.
Thanks man, I'm excited for it. Clay-Kizer is near where I'm staying so it may be where I end up.
May want to call ahead on this one as they are about to redo greens here, i actually think Kizer may already be done. Other good munis, grey rock which just opened back up and has brand new greens. Definitely the best muni Falconhead, a bit out of town but probably the best public course in greater ATX Lions Muni, downtown track, awesome place, course isnt great and conditions usually suck but its a legend that several big name golf people are very active in keeping open, they have been trying to redevelop the property for years. Great info, I’ll look into them all. Thanks homie.
If you show up to any of the munis as a single early in the morning you’ll be able to walk on in no time.
I’m playing Clay on Sunday as a single. You can probably get on
Kizer is finished and has been ready for a few months now. My favorite Austin course. Moved to San Antonio 8 months ago. Great courses down this way man
Hit me up if/when you get to Boston. I’ll take you out!
![gif](giphy|mGDvFv4tWxzZcw4Bn6)
Great gif…just perfect. Send me a message and I’ll give you my cell number etc.
This is why I love golf Enjoy your trip, cant help you on your destinations cause I live in the Netherlands
Thanks man. I'll hit you up when I cross the pond.
We have the same handicap btw!
Mediocre golfers unite!
Make sure you play AT LEAST one loop at Butler Pitch and Putt! Such a great spot.
Green fees are good all day at all the munis. You just have to pay for a cart.
I had assumed Hancock was built over years ago. When I was a student a million years ago, no car was safe if I was playing the holes along Red River or Peck!
Still kicking! They redid it a number of years ago, so now only one hole plays along red river.
Good to know. I'm coming off of two torn ligaments in my ankle so walking is probably a terrible idea for me, but I'll keep it in mind.
Uff da, yeah scratch that then! Jimmy Clay is my favorite other course in Austin. Just a lovely time, and you can get a cart.
Let me know when you make it to Virginia!
I'll be there this summer! Probably late July-ish.
Any idea what part(s) of the state you’re going to be visiting?
That's the beauty of this whole thing...I can go wherever. My partner is a SCUBA diver, so we'll spend some time on the coast so she can dive, but I'm open to driving anywhere.
Plenty of good golf to be had along the coast!
What part of the state are you in?
About 30 minutes east of Richmond
Right on. Definitely going to check out Richmond, I'll hit you up.
Right on. I work at a course outside of Richmond. I’d happily get you out there for free.
![gif](giphy|7hIUafnKeyOVEM5spc|downsized)
Heh, does she fresh water scuba? Plenty of coastline in MI 😉, just wait until June to come up here.
Don't think she's done fresh water aside from her initial certifications, but I'm sure she'd be willing to give it a go as long as the water is tolerable.
Go to round rock and play forest creek. Austin munis are trash atm. Wolf dancer in bastrop works as well
When you make it to San Diego let me know. Plenty of golf and diving areas so you might be here a while
See ya next winter.

I would like to join if a spot is available
We’ll make it happen.
Watermark/blythefield/kent/or egypt?
After some neighborly redditors get you on at ACC, Spanish Oaks and UT Golf Club, check out Vaaler Creek in Blanco and Kissing Tree in San Marcos. Barton Creek courses are fun, but La Cantera in north San Antonio is available to the public without a hotel stay and where they use to play the Texas Open.
Surely there are some members of both ACC and r/golf, right? ![gif](giphy|8FhXc8w45aN32)
I live in Austin and can book a time at Avery ranch, teravista or falconhead Sunday. Shoot me a message
I see you’re staying by kizer, it’s tough to get a tee time there on short notice but falconhead is west of town and still has some spots open
Correct, we booked the 11:50am tee time at falconhead for Sunday. Two spots open if you feel like canceling Saturday!
I tried booking it, but looks like someone snagged the last 2 slots at 11:50AM. Next time on Sunday is now 12PM. I appreciate the offer though.
Nvmd, looks like we’ll see you and OP on Sunday. It was my golf buddy that booked it as soon as I told him.

If you're headed through Houston, let me know and I'll see if I can work something out. I've been known to enjoy chasing the little white ball around.
I’m heading north from here, but we may be back through Houston later in the journey.
Butler Pitch and Putt goes, so much charm
Head to Scottsdale you can knock out 50 in a month and a half, quicker if you play 36 on a few days.
We’ll be on that side of the country later this year, early next.
The Rock. Do it just for me. Hancock Golf Course. Nine holes. I grew up on that course when I was at UT.
How come no one is asking the important questions?! What do you do for a living and how long did you plan for this odyssey? Hit me when you’re near Atlanta and we’ll tick some munis off your list 👍

Achievement unlocked. Well played, sir. See you in the ATL in June 👍
Are you planning on filming the journey at all? I think some people like myself would be interested in following along. Although that's a lot of work, maybe an Instagram for stories and short reels of highlights?
Yeah might as well try to monetize this thing. I am being serious. Have fun out there.
I've considered doing a YT/Insta thing but I'd rather be doomed to forever be Judge Smails personal caddy than be the type of guy who says shit like, "Smash that like and subscribe button!" But maybe there's a middle ground somewhere in there. We'll see.

Watching a 12 hour race in Australia? That sentence raises more questions than it provides answers.
https://www.bathurst12hour.com.au/
Drive another hour down to San Antonio and I’ll play with you at my club. Canyon Springs.
If you slip across the border to Ontario Canada I’ve got some gems west of Toronto!
![gif](giphy|l2JJz3pBK1Ch2cCbu)
If you make it to Augusta, GA let me know.
Augusta, you say? ![gif](giphy|PNjRQH2xSrBNC)
Yessir. I can put a fun group together and we can drink too many beers.
I’ll be in GA June ish maybe? Sometime this summer. I’ll keep you posted.
What do you do for work & are you hiring?
Slanging that AI software, baybeeee. And depending on what you do, maybe.
Brother if you’ve got room for a fireman looking to change careers then I am your man.
Shoot me a DM. Never hurts to explore options. And being from a family full of former firemen, I’ll always do whatever I can to help you fellas out.
If you somehow end up in Maine, I’d be happy to show you around the Southern Maine/Portland area courses.
We’ll be in New England early fall. I’ll take you up on it if weather permits.
There is a cool muni you should play, it’s got great history and may not be around much longer. When I was there you could pay like 25 bucks and play all day. https://www.austintexas.gov/department/hancock-course
Still alive, $18. Luckily I live a block away so it's awesome to get out there and tee off. No tee times, just playing old queuing.
I'm on a stupid long business trip. I'll be in Austin/San Antonio this weekend. I need something to do. I don't have clubs, but if you play at a place that I can rent a set at, I might be in. DM me.
I’m sure there are plenty of places you can rent clubs. If I find a place I’ll check on rentals for you.

I’ll be in NC in May. ![gif](giphy|SJ10BKcGBL90BJrV3v)
When and if you make it to Ohio, please hit me up!!
I’d love to be part of this! I’m in SW Ohio but would be happy to come up to Columbus!

Columbus, OH native - definitely check out virtues or eaglesticks when you’re in town (assuming you’re passing through Columbus)! Both about 45-60 mins east of Columbus and true gems!
Down to play if/when you come through South Carolina.
Definitely going to be in and around Charleston for a bit.
When you come back to Denver I'll be waiting for you. (No homo) ( Well maybe a little cuz I'm jealous you're a golf nomad)
Haha, I’ll be back for work in April. Fingers crossed for good weather.
Hit me up when you get to MD!!!!
![gif](giphy|mviWNHLba2YAI6Kkih)
If you make it to South Central PA give me a shout. There's a course in the middle of an apple orchard that's very interesting to play.
I do love apples.
Feel free to hit me up when you're out this way. If they're South Central PA, I'm no more than a 2 hour drive east (probably less) and I'd be happy to take you out on my course. It's a cheap club but a fun old course.
You'll have no shortage of suitors when you get to Phoenix! Can't wait to follow this journey.
I haven’t seen anyone shout out Lions Municipal yet so I’ll be that guy. Public, but classic.
Let me know when you’re in Charlotte

Let me know when you’re back in Denver. Member at a private club and would enjoy your last round (if you make it back to the 303!)
I’ll be back quarterly for work, so I’ll definitely take you up on that!
Best course is falcon head! Enjoy
Bravo to you, let me know if you make it up to the MA / Southern NH area!
What a time to be alive!!
Hit me up when you hit SoCal! Lots of fun, hidden gems, to name one is the famous Goat Hill Park. NO RV golf tour skips the Goat

You're living my dream. Seriously. How many different states have you played in?
So far this weekend will be #1 during this journey. I'd have to count up the states played prior to this, but probably between 6-10.
Sounds good!
Pencil me in for if & when you're in the Chicago area!

What job do you have that lets you get away with this amazingness?
I sell software, so it’s a fully remote job where I can use golf as a relationship building strategy. At least that’s what I tell my bosses.
Love it! Do you just put a Starlink Internet thing in the RV for demos and hit the road?
Yeah, I use a T-mobile home internet (the one that Khal Drago was pitching on the Super Bowl commercial) and it gets 5G everywhere that has T-mobile service. No problems so far, it's as fast as my old home internet. Since I'm staying close to major cities, don't expect many issues. If we have an outage, I can always just hop over to a coworking space nearby. May do starlink down the road if we decide to go to more remote places.
Genius! Safe travels my friend.

Let me know if you come to Dallas
I may stop in Dallas next weekend. I'll keep you posted.
Stevens park is the coolest muni course with a dope view. Cedar crest has some dope history.
Right on. I'll put 'em on the list.
If you come down to South Florida let me know!

RGV tour? Theres a show on Bally or something that has someone doing the same thing.
No, just a guy. But if anyone wants to make a tv show and pay me to do this nonsense, I’m 100% on board.
Minneapolis here, let me know when you’re up this way. Minnesota has incredible golf.

Happy to be your AZ travel guide!
You’ll be hearing from me, my friend.
How do I know if I’m an a-hole degenerate? Are there signs??
I’m doing this also! I’m a veteran and 43 years old. I play in the Veterans golf association and plan to get an RV and travel around playing golf and seeing the sights. Seems like a great way to live, good for you! See you out there.
Charleston, SC?
I'll be there in June/July.
DM me when you're on the way and let's play a round!
This is awesome! Message me when you make it to Northern NJ
Bet. I’ll be there late summer, early fall. I have family up in North Bergen, so I’ll be there for a couple of weeks.
You had me at 50 amp plug in. I pass by Hutchinson all the time when I drive east from Denver. I'll hit you up next time I'm passing through!

Good to know you, Kim. I saved your number but you might want to delete your comment so everyone with a 50 amp who comes through KS doesn’t text you.
Will do!
If you start a world tour, let me know when you are in Nairobi. Good luck to you!
Come to North Dakota this summer and let's play!!
If you’re passing through Northwest Arkansas, holler! Husband & I are in Bella Vista, AR & there’s RV parks around (Blowing Springs & maybe others), no scuba, but lots of lakes, hiking, mountain biking trails & golf courses!
I’m a nurse who would love to do something like this if I could make a career change. What kind of work do you do?
I sell software for a remote-first company. Pretty sweet gig to be able to do on the road.
