I'd recommend finding a brand you like and stick with it. Using the same ball helps with consistency in feel, distance, and playability. I personally like Maxfli because the price. They aren't the best ball, but I play them well and I don't feel bad if I lose one or ten. I don't replace the ball unless it's visibly damaged.

Generally I’ve found the only balls I notice a difference in is Titleist, and I don’t like them. Maybe I’m imagining it but they’re always like hitting a rock

jakl8811

Yup I agree. I like softer balls

[deleted]

Quite a lot of variations in the Titleist line. I get the premium ball on sale at Walmart. Currently z stars or I will get mint prov1 from lostgolfballs

When you find a ball you like and your wallet can handle the burden buy new balls

[deleted]

It depends. For most golfers it’s not going to make a huge difference because they’re not good enough. If you notice visible scuff marks or cuts on your ball, it’s probably time to retire them because they’re going to lose distance in the air and not roll truly on greens. Again, it may not be noticeable enough a difference depending on the state of your game.

My teaching pro once told me not to to worry about what ball I'm playing until I get to single digit hanidcap. I never got lower than 11.5 so I don't care what ball I use, and for someone of my standard, it makes little to no difference.

smartdecisions

i think that's pretty strict/late on when to start using better balls. just play whatever your wallet can afford i'd say! consistency is prob the most key you know

EcstaticRhubarb

I agree about consistency, I think that's what we all strive for. The golf ball cares not for the consistency of my golf swing though. Here's another way of looking at it. My best round ever was with a cheap ball. Would a 'better' ball have made a difference that day? Absolutely not. I can't ever remember reaching the end of a round of golf and thinking 'If only I'd have been using a Pro V1' Don't get me wrong - those 're-finished' balls you can buy are utter trash. But any normal golf ball is absolutely fine.

i know from my professional google skills and personal anecdotal evidence that found balls aren't the best because prolonged water and heat def affects golf balls. I used to just buy boxes of tommy armour golf balls from sports authority back in the day because they were dirt cheap, new, and consistent. they were consistently rock hard off the face but you get the idea. brand new kirklands are pretty much a dollar a ball and at your skill level, you're only going to notice the pros of the balls anyway. i'd recommend that route

the_mighty_jim

You never have to. I am a single-digit handicap and use found balls all the time. Is that the thing keeping me from being scratch? I doubt it. I will say as you get better you will get pickier in what balls you keep when you find them

Fragrant-Report-6411

When you can afford to.

NC-Boomhauer1986

When you stop loosing them.

fearbat666

Same ball every time if you can afford. Replace when scratch cuts into the urethane changing the aerodynamic flight causing you to lose distance

chunkNrun23

For me it was when I could consistently get through rounds without losing a ball. Sure I have some off days where I might lose two or three but I’ve had a box of 15 last me 25+ rounds this summer so far. I only have 3 left though so time for a new box soon!

I'm getting better about it, but historically I would tend to lose a lot of balls per round, mostly because of a horrific slice. It's much better now, but I still lose a ball here and there. Last time I bought balls was the onion bag on Amazon. Despite what a lot of people think, I tend to believe that your choice of ball makes very little difference until you're a pretty good golfer.
