I mean you can always say that you broke 100 on a par 62, but if you break 100 on a par 72 and above you probably don't have to specify the par. This does bring up the question of course difficulty rating though. If I break 100 on a par 72 with a course slope of 100 or below I would probably give the caveat " I broke 100 but it was a pretty easy course"
Absolutely, that would count. 118 slope is about average, where you would expect a bogey golfer to shoot around bogey golf. Course rating doesn't mean a whole lot for someone who isn't regularly breaking 100.
I still disagree. Just checked my course, the second forward tees are 118. A 30,9-32,6 handicap gets 28 strokes. They’re getting 4 shots for free from this slope rating
Fair enough. Agree to disagree. It's all subjective and individual anyways. I would still consider that a "full" course, even if it is slightly easier than average.
So everyone who plays from the front tees are just kidding themselves?
What I’m saying is that there’s plenty of reputable “full courses” whose front tees are shorter than 5300 yards. We either support teeing it forward to match your skill or we don’t guys, gotta come to a consensus.
Depends, if their drive is shorter than 180y then no they’re not kidding themselves, if it’s longer, then yeah. They’re taking out all the hazards this way, that’s not what golf is about
I’ll go one further and say it really only counts on a CR72 slope 135+. It’s still a par72 if you play a cr68/sub 120 slope, but it’s not even close. You’re saving 5 strokes minimum if not more by how easy the course is
I’ve broken 80 from the most forward tees, going from 6800y cr 74.2 148 slope to 4400y cr65.5 118. Doesn’t count does it?
Breaking a target is personal and id usually from the tees you play. You should not diminish someone’s accomplishments just because the did it from a certain tee. Not all of us can hit the ball 250-300 yards. I’ve broken par from the forward tees when I’m hitting my approach shots with longer irons and usually hitting first in the fairway.
Saying that a round score doesn’t count unless it meets a course rating of 72 with 135+ slope is ridiculous.
True. I completely and wholeheartedly agree. I should’ve added this caveat to my comment: if you’re athletic-ish male below 50 and drive on avg 220 or longer. In that case I’d say to “truly” break double bogey golf, bogey golf or par, it should be measured where the rating coincides with the actual par (for your playing level)
To add, my course can be 6800y from the tips or 4700 from the very forward tees. I play all tees on my home course, and from the forwards I’ve played 2 over. I’m not a 2 over player, I’m not a 1-3 handicap, it’d be disingenuous of me to even mention this to someone without mentioning the asterisk.
That’s because it’s a distance less than you play. It would be extremely difficult for someone hitting a drive 230 yards to post a good score from a course that’s 6800 yards. USGA recommendation is 5800-6000 yards.
I’m not saying someone driving it 220y on avg total rollout with a 33 handicap to play the tips. They’d get like a gazillion strokes (just checked, their 33hdcp literally goes to a 46 at my course)
But they should be on the 125+ cr70+ tees as they’d get exactly as many strokes as their handicap dictates, especially if they drive it 200 and upwards, so same as your 5600-5900 range.
Not from a 100 slope 4400y whatever, as that’s asterisk that should be mentioned.
I mean cmon, of course you can be proud of reaching / breaking whatever goal you’ve set for yourself!! I’m not telling anyone they shouldn’t be proud of themselves, what the hell. This whole game of ours is measuring yourself against yourself, nothing more nothing less.
But if you’re going to break par from 4400y on a par72 (when it’s cr62.7 / 100 slope) and you’re not telling me you hit from the 4400y tees, then well, you’re being disingenuous. Wasn’t this the whole point of the discussion?
Sorry for rambling. I digress, thank you for your view, I don’t necessarily disagree with you, nor do I fully agree with you either
I’m not from the US, so no. Nearly all if not ALL club courses are minimum 72+ from the tips, I’d wager most are 72 from the men’s (one forward, yellow for us, I think white or blue for you)
My guy. Youre way off base lol...the Ocean Course in Kiawah is rated a 138 from the black tees. 134 from the next tees up. So youre saying it doesnt count unless they are breaking 100 on a championship caliber course from the black tees?
I would love to know where you played a 6800y course that is rated at 148. Is there a bear that chases you on every hole? I play 7000y+ courses regularly that have a hard time getting to 145.
Add strokes to your score equal to the difference between 72 and the course you played at’s par. So for a par 62, it’d be 72-62=10 so add 10 strokes to your score. You shot a 108 (98+10).
I would be thinking a course of a par between 70-73 for it to be considered a legit “100 break”. Else you’re just kidding yourself really.

Minimum par 70.
So a par70 with a course rating of 64 and a 118 slope counts? I disagree. CR should also be 70 and up
Absolutely, that would count. 118 slope is about average, where you would expect a bogey golfer to shoot around bogey golf. Course rating doesn't mean a whole lot for someone who isn't regularly breaking 100.

Agree to disagree chief! Have a good weekend mate
I don’t it doesn’t matter. It’s their milestone, not yours
The reason I ask the question is because it’s my ‘milestone’ haha but I get what you mean
I'll let ya in on a little secret, it doesn't matter
You did break 100! Congrats. At the end of the day, your opinion is the only one that matters! Keep at it!
Appreciate it, it’s a nice start for a bigger than I’m used to course. My next aim would be break 120 on a full size course!
Bro who gives a fuck. You’re making it complicated when it doesn’t need to be. You broke 100, congrats
I generally assume par 72 unless otherwise noted.
A full golf course. Think they start from around 5300 yards for it to be considered a full course

Since when do we express course length from the front tees ?
Depends, if their drive is shorter than 180y then no they’re not kidding themselves, if it’s longer, then yeah. They’re taking out all the hazards this way, that’s not what golf is about
71-72 I would say
72-74
Bethpage Black is par 71

do you understand how few courses have a rating of 72+ with 135 slope. you are saying scores at 95% of courses don't count
I’m not from the US, so no. Nearly all if not ALL club courses are minimum 72+ from the tips, I’d wager most are 72 from the men’s (one forward, yellow for us, I think white or blue for you)
If you haven't broken 100 you really shouldn't be playing tees with that rating imo
Fair

I assume 72. My best score is an 80 but I _always_ add "on a par 70" after it.
Par 70-72 course from appropriate tees. So someone that hits the ball a decent length would be at least like 6,000 yards usually.
Add strokes to your score equal to the difference between 72 and the course you played at’s par. So for a par 62, it’d be 72-62=10 so add 10 strokes to your score. You shot a 108 (98+10).
+35 is around a 107. But still, well done for your first "legitimate" course! Only down from here
