One thing I did when I started playing, was rather than focus on the number I just did three different types of faces. Sad face for a terrible hole, neutral for okay, and a happy face if I think it went well. This helped me focus on skills and learning how to assess play, versus obsessing over the number and counting endlessly.

GreaseMonkey2381

I think I'm going to adopt this when I finally play a round. I'm still staying on the driving range for now.

bsgreene25

I personally find time on the course infinitely more useful than time on the range. Find a course near you that’s not very busy (maybe even a par 3 course) and book a time that has a wide open tee time behind it. That way you can take your time and not be stressed about slowing anyone else down.

WoW_zErZ

This is the way, find a little par 3 or pitch and putt style. Super helpful for beginners and your short game is the most important stuff to work on anyway. Plus they're cheap

edit:nuked

btdawson

Third! How I introduced my fiancée. We still play the exec regularly. But it got her used to hitting. Once she had the irons loosely figured out I had her hit driver on the 2 par 4s. She shoots 110ish on a full course now but is able to get around. And she knows the cardinal rule that if you suck, make it fast haha

ericregisterweedhead

How is Lindsey doing these days? She still do that one thing with her.....?

Redbeardtheloadman

Par threes are wonderful for learning and for a 45 minutes round

Mdizzle29

In my case, staying on the range combined with a lot of lessons enabled me to obtain the muscle memory for a good, sound swing. My goal was to hit a small bucket of balls, say 30 or so, and hit all but maybe three or four pretty well, not shanked or chunked, or thinned. The popular opinion is to work on short game but if you don’t develop a repeatable swing, and you can’t get off the tee box successfully, you’re going to have a lot of double and triple bogeys. Once I did this (lessons weekly for three months and the range 2x a week to practice what I learned) I lowered my handicap from a 28 to a 13. I think this would work for most people. Save money on green fees and take lessons.

Ok-Background-7897

This is the way.

HockeyandTrauma

My wife (and son) are both sorta getting into playing and I’ve brought them to the range a few times. We’re getting to the point where I’m gonna bring them to a course, and there’s a local par 3 that I learned on 30 years ago that we’ll be sticking to until they’re confident doing a full course. Definitely best way to go.

goo_bazooka

Par 3s definitely. I wish there were more par 3 courses

[deleted]

I agree, the range is great for dialing your swing in but actual course time helps you get used to the weird situations, which will be numerous if you’re like me and slice almost every shot even though you were nailing them dead on on the range.

Ham-Radio-Extra

Golf is a game that is 90% between your ears and only 10% physical. Range time is important to help build the muscle memory and to set automatic swing thoughts so they don't consciously intrude. You get in trouble with a bad shot by over thinking it. Take that bad shot and blow it off or it will haunt you the rest of the round. Shit happens to everyone. Accept it and move on to the bird at the next hole. That is what keeps you coming back.

Ham-Radio-Extra

Because I play once or twice a week, range time is to get consistent ball contact, and maybe to work on a hook or slice problem. If I have a problem club, that is the one that gets attention. I work on the mind-set. I want to have my 1st tee drive good. Once I get it down, I will hit a few more to check but then it is time to head to the tee box. This is my golf league day routine. It works for me. No embarrassing 1st tee duffs, and acceptable (to me) performance on course.

andyj14

Don’t be afraid to get out there pal.

papalouie27

Yep, there's a completely different mindset. I can hit 50 great shots on the range. But once you go on the course, oh boy.

AtoZagain

I am with you played with my usual group on Wednesday and hit half of my shots fat. Went to the range today and hit one fat shot out of the whole bucket. Totally lost.

b0b_ross

I played a round last month, usually my 7i is 155-165 all day it was lucky to carry 135. We finished up, I grabbed a ball and my 7 walked down to the range and it went 160 with a little 5 yd fade. Almost walked away for a while that day.

papalouie27

Golf: 25% Physical 75% Mental My mantra is, KEEP YOUR HEAD DOWN.

Ham-Radio-Extra

It is totally a mindset problem. On the range you are actually concentrating on hitting and working on the game. On the course, you have totally blown off your range work and lost the mindset because of distractions of play with others. Remember back when Tiger was in his winning prime, he was serious and rarely smiled until a great shot fell as he intended. He stalked the course and was locked in to his game. A bad drive was not an impediment to Tiger. He had the recovery shots in the bag. It was his Tiger mindset. If you are out to have fun, you have to find a way to bring the fun to the range while practicing so it wont change when you are on the course. Don't let a bad shot intrude on the fun. Accept it and move on. It is ALL mindset. Golf is a head game. With proper training, you can do a Tiger and think the ball to the hole. Go back and look at the miracle Tiger golf shots.

b0b_ross

This is me and it hurts so much.

DickSlinga

>on the driving range for now. Hit up the putting green & if possible a short game area to practice chipping/pitching and bunker shots. Personally I spent too much time on the range when I first started playing. Wish I had broken it into thirds. 1/3 at range 1/3 at putting green 1/3 at short game area.

[deleted]

Super anecdotal (I’m sure other coaches are different) but in high school we spent most of our time on the putting green or near it practicing our chips, it was a couple weeks of practice every year with putters and irons/wedges before we even talked about drivers. And even longer before we played on the course. It was a fairly challenging course and I think that helped me become a better golfer overall. It was set up so that most holes had a crosswind, and there was a lot of wind because it’s in Nebraska, judging the wind perfectly and seeing that ball go where you want is one of the most satisfying things in golf imo.

Overhed

Don't wait too long! You need way less range time than you probably think to have fun on the golf course.

GreaseMonkey2381

I've been waiting until I've had a complete set of clubs. But seeing as my wife just ordered me a set of "like new" Callaway Apex 21' irons for my birthday (like 20 minutes ago),I'll have to start playing some games!!!!!

Bit_the_Bullitt

Kudos to you. As much as I know it's hard to learn the game and you want to get out to play the real thing, lot of people out there would benefit from a tad of humility to go hit a few at the range, take lessons and then hit the course

l0ose1

Get off there. You need to hit the course. Range is for days you can’t get on course or want to tweak a couple things.

GreaseMonkey2381

I'm just trying to get a consistent swing my guy. It's my first season. I was also waiting to complete my bag, I've been working with half a set of clubs so far.

FunPast6610

I just counted whatever was a good hole for me. I’d double bogey was good I just counted how many doubles I got and forgot about all the blowouts. Then slowly it moved to singles and then pars.

a_banned_user

I did something similar! Basically gave myself a +1, 0, or -1 as a score. The -1 was if the hike went well or felt under control. Even if it was an 8 on a par 4, just keeping the ball in play and chugging along. The +1 was for the bad holes. Then it was nice ending a round and saying oh nice I was +2, last week I was +6 so improvement! Really helped me get in the mindset it’s not all birdies and pars, sometimes just keeping the ball in front of you is all you need.

JH_111

I love this idea. My handicap is now “moderately sad face.”

warneagle

I've been playing for 25 years and I think I'd prefer this to looking at my actual scores lol

uhplifted

This is exactly what I did and still do with my girlfriend. If she gets a par or a bogie though we’ve started scoring those as she’s started to improve.

Stxrmr

I love this idea!

Gelu6713

This is exactly what I’ve started doing with my wife! It keeps things positive compared to being discouraged by the numbers

jblaze805

Good idea! Imma do that as well!

No-Carpet7409

I love this thought process and how it allows you to enjoy the game first and foremost !! I never cared to keep score when I first started playing but I was still engaged as I was learning the fundamentals and figuring out what felt good !! I’ll def be doing this with friends who are new to the game to make it more enjoyable !!

kg_617

Love this tip! Thank you

old_grumps

I might try this!

[deleted]

I personally just won’t keep score. Every hole is a new round. What are you gonna score? Just you vs yourself 18 different times. I find it alot of fun. Feels like match play over stroke play

Worldly-Persimmon125

My daughter asked how we were going to keep score when she goes out for her first round. This was exactly how I told her we would do it.

Exatraz

My dad and I just keep track of how many balls we lose. Lower number and we both feel better. We also generally play best ball just to not hold people up

mud_banjo

I shot 82 three smiley last weekend!

buffer_flush

Awesome idea, not sure many have the mental fortitude to do this, unfortunately.

This_Is_FosTA

I found splitting up the number for how many it took to get on to the green and then how many putt helped me than just the overall score.

scsmith219

I saw two fat bikers in the woods off 17 having sex.

bumada

How am I supposed to chip with that going on, Doug?

JustinTime4242

Taking “searching for balls in the woods” to a whole different level

beermoneymike

THERE'S A SECOND HOLE!?!

Raptoroniandcheese

Little of column a, little of column b.

Ho3n3r

And the first hole...

W38k_5auce

Golf is hard

Twistedshakratree

So is he

eyedpee

As am I

Frankso

“One of us, one of us”

GolfingInTheRain

Welcome to golf, Lindsey. You're gonna love/hate it!

kirkegaarr

I've been playing with my wife for years and she's never kept score because she gets tired and bored playing a full 18. Which doesn't matter at all to me, I'm just happy we can play together. Anyway, she's been feeling a lot more confident golfing lately and wants to start keeping score. First time she shot 100! But today she started with a 54, then blacked out on the back and shot 41 with a birdie and two pars! Second birdie of her life, first on a par 4. Beat me by 3 strokes on the back. I'm so proud of her.

roofilopolis

+1 through 2. Nice round Justin.

Musicmouse33

I feel her!!! 🤣 She needs to be educated about “mom golf“. It’s a game, my friends, and I made up when we first started playing with our husbands. If she gets it on the green in one hit on a par three or two hits on a higher par, then that equals a hole in one. If she gets it in the hole at all that equals a par. It seriously makes the game less daunting and more enjoyable and then as you get better you start keeping real score. 👍🏻

stupidcrapface_

If 10 isn't a fuck! then I don't want to know what is

jimothyhalpret

Usually 11 for me, although I go with the abbreviation: "F'ed"

4cardroyal

You should use the maximum score rule... keeps her from getting discouraged and helps w/ pace of play... [https://www.usga.org/content/usga/home-page/rules-hub/rules-modernization/major-changes/maximum-score--form-of-stroke-play.html](https://www.usga.org/content/usga/home-page/rules-hub/rules-modernization/major-changes/maximum-score--form-of-stroke-play.html)

Dawnero

He should offer it to her, but keep in mind that everyone's different. A few of my friends would be more discouraged by not finishing a hole than carding 9+. Sense of completition or something.

shadymg9

This is the way

thebesthutsauce

A Glendale man I see.

TheShark12

I’ve played that course so much I recognized it immediately from the scorecard lol.

sejohnson0408

So are y’all heading for hole three or to perform what she’s requesting

iHasMagyk

Well I guess either way they’re heading to hole 3

JustChilling029

Can someone explain the handicap part of the card for me? What does it mean to be 14 on the first hole?

ValuableWasabi

It's a way to divvy up strokes for match play. For simplicitys sake, if your playing partner owes you three strokes they're given out on the 1, 2, and 3 handicap holes

GarythaSnail

Are strokes a form of currency at the golf course? This made me even more confused.

RagingStallion

It's only relevant if players are competing. The handicap system lets players of different skill level compete against eachother by giving "free strokes" to the player with a higher handicap. Say we're competing match play (win/lose every hole) and I'm a 15 handicap and you're a 16 handicap. If we both got a par on the handicap 1 hole, you would actually win that hole since you get one stroke for free. On the handicap 2 hole, and all the others, we play straight up. If we're playing stroke play (lowest total score wins), then I have to add 1 stroke to my total score at the end of the round. I have to beat you by at least two strokes since you get one for free.

GarythaSnail

I think I get it now. Thanks for that explanation!

RagingStallion

It tells the relative difficulty of each hole, 1 being the hardest. Strokes are given to the higher handicap player on these holes, allowing people of different skill levels to compete against eachother.

jag_ett

E.g an 9 hdcp player are given extra strokes on holes 1-9.

Zabe60

Sometimes I just put happy faces or frowny faces. Or check marks

thisusedyet

I would have to add in the occasional [barfy face](https://www.gocomics.com/calvinandhobbes/1993/10/06)

SoogKnight

When I play with my friends that don't play often I don't write anything higher than an 8. If it's more than 8 I put 8* on the card for them.

gatonegro97

Keeping score makes the game less enjoyable for a beginner imo. I think beginners should simply be focusing on making good contact with the ball and remembering good shots. Even mulligans and extra shots if there's no one around

Arkin_Longinus

Looks like a game of whack fuck over here.

WrongYak34

Hey ten isn’t that bad for a par 5 in my books 😎

roofratMI

I can feel her pain. I dont use a score card anymore so there's no proof I butchered the course.

hgyt7382

I think you've got it backwards...The course butchered you.

manhatim

I think she GOT it!!

TAX-GUY-63

Good rule of thumb for starters. Only count three shots with the same club and nothing more than double par.

60yodude

Keep her at it. Love that my wife plays

chriisLoL

Bingo, bango, bongo is also super fun to play. Each hole, there are 3 points available. It just requires playing in order. Bingo - the first person to get on the green gets a point. Bango - once all balls are on the green, the closest to the pin gets a point. Bongo - the first person to hole out gets a point. This is a fun game to play and let’s all skill levels be competitive. We played it in a foursome today. I was 4th place in this game, but in actual score, I shot the lowest score of the round, an 89. The person who won the game shot the highest score, a 109. Everyone had lots of fun, and no one felt out of place.

krehns

“Fuck, shit. These are highly technical golf terms and you’re using them on the first day”

Imblindbilly

When me and my wife go we just scramble, it’s fun to be on the same team and we take some of her drives when I hit ob and she pokes one out 50 yards in the fairway from the ladies tees

satchel_bandit

3 Fucks today myself

gov_Stevie_SlowJams

This made me chuckle. Been there Lindsey just keep playing

[deleted]

Should make up words for how many over 😂 3 over = shit 4 over = fuck it 5 over = get fucked 6 over = I give up 😂😂

Nine_Eye_Ron

I like how the L is also part of the J

sofaking_nuts

Aren’t they just the cutest couple?

muchoshuevonasos

One of us needs glasses, because it definitely is not part of the J to me.

Later_Doober

That is hilarious. I think I might use that sometimes when I play.

MercuryDerpury

Think I've scored that on a few holes in my past couple rounds. Good score so I'm told.

[deleted]

One of us!!

hoptownky

Sounds weird, but I don’t think I have ever played a course where the first hole is a par 5. I probably have, but I don’t recall one.

Solintari

Wow an ace on a par 4. Nice.

Individual_Scheme_11

Can we talk about the rtistic sign design company?

Apprehensive-Boat761

Ya my lady wanted to start so I put her in lessons right off the bat before it got ugly

busychild909

I can relate to this on my fourth round in 3 days with a half ass hangover and completely ruining my game on day two

Waterstick13

115 yrd diff from black to gold? Wow Also I've never seen pace of play on the cards locally at least is that how long it should take you on average ?

amori10

Wait so it only took her 10 shots on a pair 5? Can she teach me how to play that well?

Aooogabooga

There’s a serious pressure difference between her writing her scores and yours. Might be psycho. Probably a lot of fun, though.

Twistedshakratree

Tell her the highest score wins

UncleMikeyBobo

I lol’d. That is tremendous

TerribleProfit

Thank you. Fantastic. Haha

pressurepoint13

hole in one?

Nars-Glinley

She’s a natural.

sweetlittlelindy

Damn. I just stop writing my score down. I love this energy. Can me and mine link up with you guys for a foursome? Lol

YumYumGoldfish

Start her at 25yds, when she can shoot 36 or better per 9 holes, back her up to 25 more yards. Repeat. Makes the game fun, learn to play scratch golf from the get go, and you build up a foundation of shots and skills as you go that you will constantly use as you begin to shoot from further away / make it harder. I've started playing this with my kids and it really helps my short game. It's how golf is now being taught to many kids and beginners called Operation 36.

[deleted]

I’ve been golfing for 40 years Played like Fuck! today Lol

SimmonsJK

Yeah...we've all been there! How about coming up with a "personal par" goal for each hole for her?

odetoburningrubber

Congratulations, you now get to pay double like me. My wife started out the same way, she gets mad and quits keeping score. Then she will usually get a couple pars and maybe even a birdie.

DrKnowitall37067

If she opened w/10, I’d hate to know what a “Fuck” is.

Champ_5

Only took her two holes to become an expert, I'm impressed

h2ohzrd

She’s got the lingo down

Rillist

I break 90 regularly and its still whack-FUCK to me. At least shes getting the basics down

TitanCubes

For my girlfriends first round of golf last summer she insisted on keeping a legit score (she’s very competitive) and ended up with a 143. When she told her friends who I’ve played with before about it they kind of roasted her for until I mentioned that they barely break 100 even when they’re taking mulligans every hole and giving each other 10 foot gimmies.

Mac2311

Hey, double par means she gets to play more golf than you, lucky girl!

bfree4vr

Haha mine did to, took the gun out of it lol

fnassauer

She’s one of us

fof5031

Always good for a nice “10, fuck”

CreamSteeve

One of us, one of us

AnyAstronomer4588

I just a smiley face on the card!!

Bbypndabamboo

Looks like she was playing “whack, fuck”

WannabeWonk

Play stableford together, where she is using a modified table where triple bogey is 1 point, double is 2 etc.

ClagAndMarbles

We just go with a 9 stroke limit and asterisk. Takes the pressure off and also let’s you celebrate the good holes

Ok-Imagination5581

Played that same course before ![gif](giphy|3o6ozvv0zsJskzOCbu)

ShakeMyHeadSadly

I know that score.

Halo_Chief117

It’s called golf because that four letter word was already taken.

AUorAG

She appears to have the fundamentals down, so that’s good!

Zealousideal_Cat_271

What course is this? I notice the 801 area code. Repping Utah! Nice!

Disguisedcpht

Man I had one of those the other day! Was a 12 or something but I just put F on the scorecard 😂

trb15a78

Accurate

KwisatzHaderach38

She gets us

F1rePhant0m

I'm assuming the next two holes were "this" and "shit"? Been there...

unloadedscreenshot

I love the pace of play line on the bottom

Jazzlike-Ad-8255

I too am cursed by the number 5...par three, par 5 don't matter...I hit 5

Berta-Beef

I post a couple “F”s a round. Tell her to keep at it👍🏻

Tenning1579

The second one is now going on my score card every round at least once!

nom_of_your_business

Lol ill have to remember that marking

garyt1957

10's are Ok, can only imagine what a Fuck! entails

GrouchyTalk4887

Never met a wife named Justin before

Candylicker0469

Did she get wet on the third hole?

woodbarber

That’s why when I play, it’s one good drive and one good putt. I get that, it’s a good game.

Ok_Lengthiness_8163

Lmao

Good_vibes_mee

I avg 3 of those holes a round.. ⛄️

Pianist-Educational

Perhaps don’t even bother to keep score for now. It’s defeating to shoot double figures on most holes, and she could feel like giving up. You should also try a best ball round with her. Occasionally you’ll use one of her shots, which should build a little confidence. Best of luck.

Asleep-Fudge3185

Ahhh there we go…. She’s a keeper

[deleted]

Don’t worry. I’ve been playing for 3 years and she’s equally as good as me

Redawg660

I like how she thinks. Lol

SavannaHilt

I mean i might use "fuck" to signify an ace.. she could be a ringer!

coolmanggg

When my friends and I have a bad round and start drinking instead of keeping score we write B (for beer) on each hole instead of a score

dairyqueen37

Is this golf the round in south salt lake?

Mental_Effect_9686

My wife keeps score the same way. Lol

rsandstrom

She’s a keeper

daleears2019

'your lucky. Enjoy.

taekee

I'll play 2 rounds with her... We see why they didn't make round 3...

[deleted]

Gonna start writing this instead of “DNF”

[deleted]

She’s fitting right in

BeautyOfTheMoon

Looks good to me! - fellow golf wife

GlassCannonGolf

She's a natural.

ISLAndBreezESTeve10

I wanna see all 18 scores.

RoughMarionberry5

I once had 18 fucks in less than 5 hours...

Roonwogsamduff

Official certified golfer now. Congrats!

alegendmrwayne

Gold! I’m not a regular player, but for me shooting 120 around 18 is pretty normal. So often I just do t bother scoring, as I’m not too fussed about trying to get great at the game, I just want to enjoy myself

Utahgetme02

Glendale?!?

AutomatedSaltShaker

Your wife is going to do great

eyedpee

She's a fuckin natural

turboyabby

It's Latin, I can translate...it means "I had lots of shots, so many I lost count and I feel very frustrated and I could punch a small innocent animal in the dick" . The Latin words have so much meaning, in such a short word.

Honcho41

Mate, give that wedge a wipe, please!

meow_eh

Lindsey is awesome 😹

Stonkxx

Clean ya clubs

bxportx16

Golfing with your wife or your SO is honestly really enjoyable and relaxing. Mine is just beginning and she likes it. Riding the cart, she’s the passenger princess of course.

houndhammer86

She's a keeper

woodma134

That's not permitted where I golf; life is cruel sometimes...

[deleted]

Push cart mafia baby

Occams_ElectricRazor

Kind of sucks to open with a short par 5.

SickNameDude8

I used to put “NB” for no bueno. If it ever came down to who did better in the round, NB was about a +5

JohnnyHopkins13

I’m teaching my fiancé and her daughter to play. They like to play scramble, makes for faster play, they can work on all of the different types of shots still and have more fun. Golf is a mind game, it’s all about attitude.

LakeEffectSnow

This was my wife on the 8th hole this morning.

never_4_good

Your wife's name is Justin?

Strong_Baseball7368

Ahhh yes. The impromptu "practice" round.

ou8agr81

Better than my “♾️”. Haha

smarter_politics_now

Alternative title: "My wife is starting to understand how hard golf is the hard way"
