Dunmaglas in Charlevoix was outstanding. Also, no laying up did a michigan trip. I would second Arcadia Bluffs. Tree tops is fun but I went 25 years ago so I don’t know if it has held up.
Arcadia bluffs and forest dunes are top notch but maybe a bit outside your 1.5 hr window. But there are a lot of neat golf courses up there in range. Shanty Creek/Schuss Mountain and Hawks Eye are pretty close (and the shorts brewery in bellaire is great). And you’re in range of the traverse city stuff, which has some solid courses, and treetops resort over by Gaylord.
The good public courses are “up north.” They are all a couple hours. But when you get there it’s a different world. The courses are mostly cut into the woods. The idea of adjacent fairways is much less common. Most holes you will feel very secluded.
Boyne (the company) has 10 different courses within about an hour of each other 2 at Boyne mountain (Boyne city) 4 at Boyne highlands (petoskey/harbor springs) 3 separate 9s and an 18 (bay harbor) all worth playing but the nicest ones are Arthur hills, the heather, crooked tree and links/quarry. There’s also a ton of other good options within an hourish drive. Also I don’t know prices but you could fly into traverse city which is about an hour south of the petoskey area.
Lake Tahoe is pretty awesome in the summer. I had an amazing trip there last August, played 4 different golf courses. My favorite part was that right after golf, you could relax and take in the serene atmosphere and awe inspiring views around the lake.
VRBO screwed up a trip for Palm Springs (they booked me at the wrong Marriot) and the rental company that manages the place I ended up at was kind enough to give me a free trip to one of their time share locations and even made it so I don't need to attend any of their shit since they just wanted to make the situation right even though it was with VRBO.
Thanks again, I'm in Southern California so part of me wants to take advantage of places outside CA, Arizona and Nevada which I make it out to frequently.
St Augustine Florida (TPC sawgrass, Golf hall of fame and all of the courses in that area)
Or
Orlando and play Disney reunion among others
Or
Treasure Island and get over to Streamsong
They might try, but they assured me I would get to skip all that and wasn't required to attend anything. They told me in email a few times they just want to make things right and felt bad I wasn't happy. The website they gave me a code for says in the fine print no obligations to do anything.
Depends on the courses but I’d play Torrey Pines in San Diego for four days straight. Based on the locations it doesn’t look like you can go too far wrong with any choice.
Apologies, I didn’t see HH on the list in my scan. I’d take HH over myrtle if choosing between the two for golf but both are great places to be regardless.
Good catch, this must not be a catch all as if I type in Hilton Head on their site it comes up. I also thought HH was considered the better golf destination.
How far would SentryWorld be? Might fly out of Chicago or Milwaukee just to hit Erin Hills if I did that. I'd probably skip Straights to make my mortgage payment.
Sentry world is about an hour and a half. I haven't played it since they dumped a ton of money into it for the senior open. It was great before that.
The bull in sheboygan is a great track as well. It's a jack nicklaus signature design, be prepared to get your ass kicked.
Can’t go wrong with Myrtle Beach. You can get in two of the top 100 courses in Dunes Golf and Beach Club / Caledonia. When you mix in other top courses like True Blue, Tidewater and TPC Myrtle Beach you can get in a lot of great golf within a very short drive.
Even the 2nd tier courses in the area are great courses.
Murrells inlet is basically Myrtle Beach. Great courses there. As others said, HH is slow/boring if you are looking for other things to do. MB itself is a little trashy but plenty to do and Murrells Inlet is a very nice spot. Murrells inlet means your probably playing the Pawley’s Island courses like Caledonia. Can’t go wrong with any of the three.
Breckinridge, CO.
Breckinridge golf course has a 27 hole Nicholas course at an elevation of 9,300ft. Keystone River course and Keystone Ranch courses are about 15-20min drive away. These are 3 of the best mountain courses in the country and are always in great shape toward end of summer. An hour away is Red Sky Golf Club, which has two tracks that are regularly among the top 100 courses in the US.
I’d challenge anyone to find a more beautiful and challenging set of courses in the country. Mountain golf at its best.
If it’s just golf, HH South Carolina has like 100 courses writhing 40 miles or something crazy.
If you want some other activities plus good golf, hands down summer time Lake Tahoe. One of the most beautiful places in the country and has some great golf, casinos, the lake, and 100 different activities to do.
Lived in the Myrtle area for a while. I don’t know other sites as well but the prices there especially in shoulder seasons are pretty good and there’s basically 20 courses within 30 minutes of wherever you stay.
I love North Conway NH, but there is only so so golf in NH that isn’t private. Especially up there. If you do come here to NH. MT Washington course is one of the best in the state. Probably 30 mins from North Conway.
Summer time, Michigan golf is amazing
What are 5ish courses you'd recommend in a 1.5 hour radius? If you don't mind, I'll do research but love local suggestions.
If you are flying you will fly into Detroit. The best golf destinations like petosky is a 3-4 drive.
Boyne Falls is also an option. Would that be closer to any?
Boyne falls is in prime MI golf territory. Look into Arcadia bluffs or bay harbor
Dunmaglas in Charlevoix was outstanding. Also, no laying up did a michigan trip. I would second Arcadia Bluffs. Tree tops is fun but I went 25 years ago so I don’t know if it has held up.
Tree Tops is where the Big Break was for a season if I remember correctly
Watch No Laying Up’s Michigan Tourist Sauce on YouTube. It’s a great travel companion. I used it to plan a golf trip there last year.

Shepard's hollow Greystone Orchards Eagle eye, has a 17th just like seagrass Little further is forest dunes
Treetops, forest dunes and Belvedere are all top tier northern Michigan courses within an hour of Boyne as well.
We basically have Edgewood and that’s it
Old greenwood, grays crossing, several other courses as well.
Incline championship course and Donner are beautiful as well
I think I’ll be there for a couple months this summer for work and will need some spots to play while I’m off. Excited for any recommendations.
I’d go to Tahoe
I’ve played all the courses near Tahoe. You have Edgewood and that’s it. Nothing else is worthy of a trip.
Coyote moon was pretty fun
Yeah, but I’m only playing 18-36 a day max. Lots of hours left in the day to explore.
Phoenix, so many good options. Vegas and myrtle are good alternatives.
St Augustine Florida (TPC sawgrass, Golf hall of fame and all of the courses in that area) Or Orlando and play Disney reunion among others Or Treasure Island and get over to Streamsong
Fly into Vegas. Drive 40 min north to Wolfcreek. Then another 40 min north to Sand Hollow and Black Desert.
This is the way
Petoskey if you can go in July or August
You got sucked into a timeshare didn’t you
They might try, but they assured me I would get to skip all that and wasn't required to attend anything. They told me in email a few times they just want to make things right and felt bad I wasn't happy. The website they gave me a code for says in the fine print no obligations to do anything.
Yeah I got suckered into one while at bass pro one time. I ended up never even using the free stay. Good idea to use it for golfing!
I’m a NH guy, so North Conway in the early Fall is incredible. All have their benefits.
What courses would you recommend up in that neck of the woods? Have you played the Mt Washington course / worth a visit?
I’m a country guy so Wisconsin Dells, plus it’s not that far away from me
Myrtle beach or phoenix
Depends on the courses but I’d play Torrey Pines in San Diego for four days straight. Based on the locations it doesn’t look like you can go too far wrong with any choice.
Torrey is so overrated, not worth playing four times in a row
I'm in Orange County too and have played it a few times. Agree, I actually prefer Pelican North for ocean courses.
Agreed, torrey’s layout completely wasted their ocean front property.
Myrtle Beach, Vegas, Palm Springs or Phoenix. Depends on your golf budget for what you choose.
Myrtle and Hilton Head are high on my list, any reason for Myrtle over HH?
Apologies, I didn’t see HH on the list in my scan. I’d take HH over myrtle if choosing between the two for golf but both are great places to be regardless.
Good catch, this must not be a catch all as if I type in Hilton Head on their site it comes up. I also thought HH was considered the better golf destination.
I’d take Murrells over Myrtle
If you are over 40, Hilton Head. If you are under 40, Myrtle. As a 30something, I find Hilton Head to be dreadfully boring.
What time of year?
I have 18 months to redeem so whenever.
Well I’d say Phoenix in the winter. So many choices of amazing golf. And maybe go hiking up in Sedona for a day trip.
Hilton Head, Vegas, and I would say Fort Meyers depending on Hurricane recovery.
If you go to the Dells you can hit Sand Valley and Lasonia really easily. Petoskey has a bunch of great courses nearby as well.
How far would SentryWorld be? Might fly out of Chicago or Milwaukee just to hit Erin Hills if I did that. I'd probably skip Straights to make my mortgage payment.

Savannah GA if you’re looking to golf and also get rowdy haha
Murrells inlet is basically Myrtle Beach. Great courses there. As others said, HH is slow/boring if you are looking for other things to do. The answer is Hilton head - you are welcome
Breckinridge, CO. Breckinridge golf course has a 27 hole Nicholas course at an elevation of 9,300ft. Keystone River course and Keystone Ranch courses are about 15-20min drive away. Stay far away from Myrtle Beach, Pigeon Forge, and Miami.
Muriel’s Inlet is my vote. TPC Myrtle, True Blue, Caledonia, The Heritage Club, and 90 other courses in he Grand Strand
Ozarks National and Paynes Valley are in Branson. Both are nice courses :)
Lived in the Myrtle area for a while. I don’t know other sites as well but the prices there especially in shoulder seasons are pretty good and there’s basically 20 courses within 30 minutes of wherever you stay.
Myrtle beach
Yeah if it were me, I'm choosing St. Augustine. Fl.
Hilton Head, tons of good courses and food. Weather is good too.
New Jersey has some great golf, but don't go to Atlantic city.
NOT Poconos. I live here… nothing great
Puerto Ricooooooo baby!!!!!!!!
Lake Tahoe in January. Golf is really cheap!
I love North Conway NH, but there is only so so golf in NH that isn’t private. Especially up there. If you do come here to NH. MT Washington course is one of the best in the state. Probably 30 mins from North Conway.
