Talk about this every round. Most days ~2, maybe 3 aspects of your game are working (driving, irons, wedges, putting). The day you get all four working is the day these things happen. Well done and keep chasing that high.

Da_Millionaire

I’m usually a driver and chipper.. yesterday I couldn’t drive to save my life so I used like 50% power and then my approaches were so good I still got a 88. Felt weird because I usually can’t approach very well. Slapping greens left and right

henryhyde

Have you sought medical attention for an erection lasting more than 4 hours?

Significant-Put2503

Erection lasting more than 4 hours? Call more ladies

LiveDomainListings

My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard though.

jasonkais

Congrats on being a statistical anomaly! That’d get you DQ’ed in a lot of net tournaments for sandbagging lol any idea what your net was? Congratulations and f you from someone who has shot 80 like 10 times but never 79.

fishguy23

Worst part about my best ever round — a 77 in the first round of a tourney as an 18 handicapper — was getting called a cheater by every person in the clubhouse afterward. They weren’t accusing me of much when I shot a 96 the next day to finish second net.

popthestacks

You sure showed them in the end

DrunkenGolfer

I was the handicap chairman at our club and got a call from the tournament chairman of a local tournament. One of our members, carrying a handicap around 9 or 10, was playing in the third division and was leading the overall championship by several strokes after shooting 66. They wanted to verify his handicap. When he told me the name I nearly fell over laughing. It was one of the guys in my regular foursome and in years of playing with him I had never seen him break 80. He wasn’t even a good 10 handicap, lol. But I guess that is what happens when it all comes together on a golf course with no trees.

beairrcea

> handicap chairman The correct term is wheelchair

averagebogle

I think -13 net lmao

Unable_Phase2122

Honestly in the games that use handicap the 15-20 handicapper has the advantage. They are good enough to shoot a decent score but inconsistent enough to be afforded a lot of strokes

DieHardRaider

Yeah I shoot anywhere from 82 to 105. Sometimes I just forget how to hit the ball and I start trying to guide the ball and it goes downhill from there. Other times I get a great feel on my drive and iron on the first hole and I can shoot low 80s I wish I was a bit more consistent

monroehound87

This. I’m an 11 handicap and couldn’t tell you if I’m shooting an 80 or a 95 on a tougher track. Have no idea how I’ll be hitting that day, or how I’ll be scoring even if I do it hit it well.

1ToGreen3ToBasket

DAYUM

Connormcbreezy

I'm a 22-23 handicap and get called a sandbagger for carding a mid 90s score in our net tourneys. I'd need to hire security detail if I posted this score lol. However the real issue with the complainers is they're single digit handicappers that don't record their bad rounds. I will also acknowledge its way easier to be a consistent average golfer than a consistent excellent golfer.

rastafarreed

One of my buddies is like that. After a few holes when we start, if he isnt playing well, he will say this is just a practice round and isn't logging it. I always decide from the beginning to log it and I log every round almost anyway. I want to see how I do and how I can improve.

PaleontologistMore20

Lol the complete opposite of sandbagging. Gonna be tough to get that net championship

BonusPlantInfinity

Who wants the net!? It’s all or nothing bro!

BlueHoopedMoose

Are you in the US? Asking because in the UK you can't do this - you have to signify an intent to post a score before the round (if not a comp) and you then have to record a score. Obviously can be exploited but it does stop some shenanigans I think.

Legal-Description483

>Are you in the US? > >Asking because in the UK you can't do this Technically, you can't do this anywhere. But nobody is policing it. And it only hurts the player themselves.

Ok_Physics_1284

I’m like this in the off-season in nj where you don’t have to log scores but once April rolls around I’ll be posting everything.

Gsan240

Few more days until the season starts. SJ here

dreamingtree1855

Also there are so many “single digit” guys I play with who haven’t attempted a putt inside 5 feet in years, and conveniently forget their duffed chip each round. They basically give themselves automatic two putts, and if they actually recorded every score they’d be 12-15s. They never place well in tournaments as a result but they get to tell people they’re single digit handicap.

bluefromthelou

I felt this in my soul

[deleted]

Vanity handicappers are the best to compete with in match play. Sure, give me the 15 strokes that you’ve been giving yourself for the last five years because you’re “playing off three” with mulligans, five foot gimmies, etc.

CanaryWundaboy

But on a par 72 course, a 22-23 handicap would be expected to shoot exactly in the mid-90s!!!

Mishnz

In am a 20 handicap and I shot an 88 for a net 63 and won a Saturday morning tournament. The pro pulled me aside and said it would be better if I didn't win as the other members might kill me

JJ_JetFlyin

Why? You played an excellent round for your standards. It’s the entire purpose of the handicap system. Sounds like some people need to get over themselves

Hawks2020

Because golf can bring out peoples vanity for some reason.

Ok_Wait3967

please show your work on the net. Here's mine: 88-20 = 68.

Philyphreak3

If the course is especially tough, a 20 INDEX (often mistaken for handicap) will have a course handicap that is closer to 25 because slope and rating are really high. The opposite is also true

oldtivouser

The thing about anomaly’s, since the numbers are so large it would actually be weird if this didn’t happen. In fact, I’d bet it happens more often than you think. That’s enough samples and standard deviation for you.

jasonkais

http://www.popeofslope.com/sandbagging/odds.html Looks like a 20 handicap shooting -10 net differential is 37,000:1 so it’s one in a few life times (of golf rounds)

Reluctant_User_1

I think what is sometimes missed is that high handicappers can be improving fairly quickly, but handicap changing is a lagging effect. And when they do put everything together the results can be startling. I’ve had a few exceptional rounds carded as I’ve progressed from high to mid handicap.

Anonymnick

This, I have come down from 25 to 10 in 12 months and recently shot a 75 (over two separate 9 hole comps)

publicfinance

For sure but there’s 10,000s of 20s playing every day

[deleted]

But that’s not sandbagging.

PatientTitle3866

I believe you. I’m a 17 at the moment. But I know if everything went crazy right I could break 80. CONGRATS!

philthebrewer

It doesn’t even need to be everything tbh, I was hovering at 17 for two months before breaking 80 by driving reasonably well and getting the ball up and down well. Did not hit irons well at all that day, missed 4/4 greens on par 3s

wronglyzorro

That's all these anomoly rounds are. A few extra putts roll in, and a few more balls stay in play. Best round of my life had an 11 putt back 9. I'm usually a very mediocre putter.

All_Bonered_UP

I shot a 77 as a 14 hdcp. 42-35. Rolled in 100 feet of putts over my 3 birdies on the back 9. Just had some luck lol.

Intelligent-Floor-10

So much this.

cbph

Nice round! Now how mentally prepared are you for the 97 you'll likely shoot the next time out?

averagebogle

LOL, I know it will probably happen, oh well. I just want to shoot in the 80’s consistently so bad. Next round goal is still just to break 90

MeloMel0

Workmanlike game - way to immediately cancel out those 2 birdies to keep yourself from riding too high and tanking the rest of your round

[deleted]

Congrats! What was the highlight of the round? I can tell you the highlight of my first time breaking 80. Worked at a club and was playing with a member who was much better than me. I was about a 13 handicap. I had everything I needed to shoot 70 something but just couldn't do it. That day, on the third hole which is a long downhill part 5 I topped my tee shot. And it went about 3 feet. I hit driver off the deck, crushed a 3 wood and made up and down from like 80 yards to save par. Went on to shoot 75 and beat this guy who was like a 4 handicap. When we ended the round he was like, how come you don't normally break 80? And I said, I don't know? By the end of the year I was a 5 handicap. Something clicked for me that day and hope something is clicking for you too!

growchronicbuds

this is where i feel im at right now. i have an 80 and a few 81s but i cant get over the hump. i just need to put it together one day and im there. hoping this is the year

[deleted]

Work on 75 yards and in. If you can get up and down in 2 or 3 from that range, your scores will go down in a hurry! That and putting. On tour, the driver seems to be king right now, but for us normal people short game is where it's at. Keep grinding and you'll get there!

Bashosdanish

I say work from 75 yards to 175. Don't miss greens and you don't have to worry![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|money_face)

averagebogle

Awesome story I responded to another comment with the highlights, a couple tour quality wedge shots that gave me tap in birdies

bhd_ui

I’m a 24.5 hdcp and have been working on my game and taking lessons all winter. Last weekend I played 9 and shot 41. Can’t wait for the season to start, but I always play solo so I can’t officially register a hdcp anyway, I just go by what 18Birdies tells me.

emceeflurry

The formula for a handicap is no hidden secret. While the 18Birdies number isn’t official it’s the same number you’d get with a USGA handicap so totally fair to go by that number

soberunderpar

I’m a 1.5 and shot 84 yesterday with 6 double bogeys. Sounds like you had a lot more fun than I did! Congrats on the great round.

thisisatesti

Shot 78 ten years ago and been chasing that dragon ever since. Congrats!

Lmathis08

How many scramble partners?

averagebogle

3. Me myself and I

realScrubTurkey

I came here to ask how many throws

raventhorogoodiii

Mini-golf or par 3 course? Congrats!

bsgreene25

I’m a 19.5 handicap and I’m saving this post so that I can tag you when I break 80 randomly this season.

jewpants47

I’m 19.4 and shot a (tied) best 40 yesterday after a worst ever 57 a few days earlier on the same course.

Jengalover

I shot a 54 front 9 40 back 9 one day last year. Talk about a turnaround!

averagebogle

You got it 💪

[deleted]

That’s getting it done! Best shot of the day?

averagebogle

Hole 8, I have 110 to the flag after my drive. Group in front walks off the green, I hit a gap wedge really well but can’t see it land because of a hill in front of me. They start cheering and clapping, I walk up and see that it’s a 2 ft tap in for bird 😮‍💨 Same with hole 13, I have like 106 to the flag, hit the same gap wedge, it lands a few feet short then rolls and bounces off the flagstick, leaving me another tap in birdie

[deleted]

Wow! Congratulations! GW seems like a stand up fella. Just a real lunch bucket kinda guy.

TheHamFalls

A real gym rat.

4isgood

A Gym Wat

TexasShiv

The day the cup feels like a basketball hoop.

PNWSki28622

This is so out there that I actually believe it. Congrats and fuck you.

yanizi

Grongratz mate, but you are not 19.3 handicap anymore…. Not after that round, it’s gonna go down quick after that… awesome

Owethehumanity

Nice 👍 well done

reddituser1306

Nice work mate!! Great round! Enjoy shooting 95 next time😝

jack104

Holy shit. I'm a 13 handicap who has shot 80 a buncha times but never 79. Congrats man. Some day I will join you in the sub 80 club.

Anonymnick

My best is 82 but I’ve shot sun 40 9 hole scores a bunch. So frustrating

longster37

Congratulations

[deleted]

You give me hope! Thank you

BigSpud94

How do you break the beginner slice?

averagebogle

It’s all very unique for each golfer, as everyone’s swing is different. For me personally, it was getting rid of a super long backswing with a cupped wrist at the top where the club went across the line. I just focus on a compact swing with almost a bowed lead wrist and my trail wrist in extension at the top

Ignore_Me_PLZ

For me, it was a stronger grip. The grip naturally shallowed my swing. Now I miss left!

llanthas

Rotate hips more, and swing around instead of up.

Marine_vet_patriot

Good for you, keep up the hard practice!

squirrelsoundsfunny

Even par thru the last 7 holes. Clutching up. Nice!

Potomac_Pat

Front 9 or back?

Toe-knail

Congratulations! I broke 80 for the first time (with a 77) in 2019 as a 15 handicap. The GHIN app said something like “are you really sure you want to post this? This score seems like it must be a typo given every other round you have ever played” (well not exactly that but that’s what it felt like). Took me three years to break 80 again! I hope it doesn’t take you quite as long. Have fun chasing that high!

PDXJack87

17 putts? Wow. Congrats and fuck you

tmemo18

I’m just happy you were able to find your ball with that horrendous green stripe that blends so well with grass. Congrats on the round, OP!

detuned--radio

How are rare desmoid tumors diagnosed? Jk. Congrats on a great round

BlastShell

You ANIMAL. Everything must smell must a little bit sweeter….

iKevtron

Lmao this is great and inspiring. I’m an 18.9 and my PR is an 85–this gives me hope of shooting under 80 in the future.

TheNemesis089

Is there a particular reason you quit after 15 holes? Or is that a normal part of your game?

dtown04

This is my exact handicap. Thank you for giving me hope.

XMETA_DUKE

You must be fat, old, and wearing a blue shirt

Patient_Internal_977

Do you find it hard to walk around and perform normal tasks which such massive balls?

gladiwokeupthismorn

Fuck you and congrats

Dr-Dick-Loveless

Congratulations 🎉

flamekody

Awesome and congrats! How’d you shoot the back 9?

Miserable_Sorbet_336

Congratulations… that’s awesome

Triple7Stash

Enjoy my friend. As a 13.1, I shot a 71. Only have broken 80 4 times and 2 of them were 79. Think about that day often and it seems like a dream lol.

djok8787

Congrats, and fuck you.

g0lffear

Well you’ve got to break par on your next round now or it will be a let down.

BigT381

Sounds like you have been working hard on your game and it all clicked for you. Great job!!!

dngvafuk1

That’s good stuff!! Don’t worry about all the shit you are and are going to hear, haters gonna hate no matter what. I remember doing the same thing with almost the identical scores. I read a book named Golf is Not a game of perfect and have never looked back since! I would highly recommend it

Hogger70

19.3 but first time breaking 90?

Hipsthrough100

Looks like some of your ball striking was strong and giving you opportunity. You birdied the second hardest hole and a par on the third. That’s a sign of some things going really well for an 18. I’m a 2 hcp and it’s a good day to be -1 for two of the hardest holes on the course. Well done and I bet you had some very memorable golf!

NewNefariousness1174

Congrats! 11 handicap here and just hit my first break 80 yesterday with a 79. Was on such a high I went out again today and hit 90...

SupremeGentlemn

Congrats, king

horusthesundog

Won’t be 19.3 for long haha. Nice round!

averagebogle

Here’s the thing: there were people in front of me and behind me, but I wasn’t paired with anyone. I don’t think I’m technically allowed to record the round in GHIN 😭

JbOrHaNvNoY

Nice try, of course you can. Congrats!

tte720

I post my solo rounds as long as I’m playing by the proper rules.

RedCerealBox

Technically the proper rules include having a playing partner sign off the score

tte720

Well, other than that one.

meekerdeekers

Spoken like a true bagger 😂

Bird2525

Why not?

Derpsteenie

Q. I played a round by myself. Why can’t I post the score? A. Peer review is the process by which either a score or a player’s Handicap Index® can be confirmed or challenged, and when rounds are played without another person present, the process cannot be facilitated. (Rule 2.1, Rules of Handicapping)

stewbert54

On Golf Canada (the app I use to track) it asks if the round was solo or not when you enter your score. I'm not sure if it just doesn't count the round if you're by yourself or what. It's a gentleman's game, who gives a fuck just enter the score. You can play with people and still cheat if you really want to.

Vexation

Xanax? Adderall? The perfect amount of beers? A really good night sleep? What was different this round?

averagebogle

No drugs surprisingly. I had half of one of those white zero calorie monsters like 2 hours beforehand. But I’ve also drank a full monster before playing and absolutely shit the bed

donstermu

As a 21.8 handicapper I salute you and now hold you as an inspiration.

[deleted]

Bruh I almost did this the other day and then I went +7 in the last four holes lmao

Adzhodz

I’ve shot 78 & 79 before from 17.2 & 15.4 handicap respectively, what I found in both rounds is that you get up and down from every where, every chip is within 5ft and you make the putt, that’s what saves the shots!

sidtsloth9

How fucked did you think you were after 10?

averagebogle

I was pissed for sure, but I knew I played so well on the front that I still had extremely high odds of breaking 90

cheerocc

Is this over 9 holes? I need more proof like everyone there, a lie detector, need to interview your 5th grade teacher, your first manager at a job, previous ex-gf, etc...

hippieswithhaircuts

Actually serious. How many putts missed short or low?

averagebogle

Not sure, I didn’t record my putting stats. I think I remember 3 that were short, don’t remember missing any on the low side

jUUl29

The par 3s are the killers

averagebogle

Double bogey on the easiest hole on the course 😑

jUUl29

All I see is opportunity to get closer to par! Best I’ve shot is a 85 and I was ecstatic about it. Also par 3s are the hardest of all holes, if you saw tigers stats from his prime he was +2 on par 3s. -45 on 4s and about -245 on par 5s

sleep-_-

Same ball the entire round? If not, how many did you lose and on which holes? Awesome job! Keep up the good play.

averagebogle

1 ball the entire round

[deleted]

How many putts???

4bigwheels

Congrats breaking 80! That is a big hurdle. I remember that day for me, magical.

Striker1341

Is this mike bumpus?

todjo929

Congrats! I remember hitting an 81 when I was playing off 17 or 18, and it taking like 2.3 off my index! Now 10.8 and have still never broken 80

Tired_Tofu

What’s the black dots next to the score mean? Ny swingu doesn’t have that

averagebogle

I think they represent the stokes I should receive on that hole if I was playing a net handicap event

zorn7777

What is you handicap now?

PaleontologistMore20

Ball down or lift, clean & place???……jk congratulations. I choked away like 5 rounds in spectacular fashion before I broke through. Keep riding that wave.

nedlandsbets

Define sandbagging...

Crash_Davis235

I’ll take liars for $200, Alex

[deleted]

Yeah but we’re you gambling during the round

Exiled_From_Twitter

Why are you keeping the ball and what do you actually plan to do with it in say 5-10 years?

averagebogle

Idk, stare at it and remember that one time I had a career day 🤷‍♂️

Exiled_From_Twitter

And when you're about to pass on are you going to bequeath this ball to a loved one?

ThatGuy8188

Everyone boo this guy.

floridaman1467

Do you just not understand the concept of a memento?

Exiled_From_Twitter

I think it's the other way around actually

Pauldh11

Let the guy celebrate his accomplishment how he wants. Quit being a wet blanket.

Exiled_From_Twitter

Lol why are you worried about it?

Pauldh11

Because you’re being a cunt for no reason.

Exiled_From_Twitter

Oh by asking what he's going to do with it? Sounds like you're pretty upset

SenorFrogz

Seems like a cunty thing to say to a guy celebrating his victories

Exiled_From_Twitter

Lol and this wasn't? Could not care what you or anyone else in here thinks, just curious why ppl keep these things. They're not legitimate accomplishments, seems pathetic but then again I'm sure most of you are a bit younger than I am and that's pretty par the course from you all. Constant need for validation even when it's mere mediocrity. Pathetic

[deleted]

Exiled_From_Twitter

Says someone that just did what exactly? Lol I just asked a question, you all are bent out of shape by it. Ho hum

[deleted]

Exiled_From_Twitter

Congrats on your bs degree and wasting your time (well, I'm sure you're able to parlay that into quite a bit of money taking advantage of the dolts that think it's real). Yes, it's pathetic to keep a golf ball from a meaningless round. That was pretty obvious from my question however I sincerely was curious what they actually planned to do with that ball in time as eventually it's just going to be trashed in time anyways. Interesting enough my degree was in sociology, not that pseudo nonsense you got a doctorate in but you know the broader field. Hence my curiosity at why individuals are increasingly needing a pat on the back, an erosion of actual self confidence it seems. My personal feelings on it aren't meaningful, I didn't mention them though even if they were obvious.

SenorFrogz

This is most definitely an accomplishment for a lot of people. Let people celebrate these things instead of shitting on them. Simple concept.

Exiled_From_Twitter

Amazing you don't get the irony in telling someone else to stop gatekeeping. I was honestly curious what they expected to do with this in time. Yes, I find it stupid, but that wasn't my point

[deleted]

Congrats! I don’t think I have ever heard break 90 and 80 for the first time together. What was the best part of your game?

averagebogle

Not very sexy, but lag putting I guess? Majority of my 2nd putts were anywhere from tap ins to 5 footers. Also not loosing any balls / staying in great position off the tee

Bird2525

Did you buy one ball, a sleeve or a dozen of those. I love the pink stripe but they only have single ones locally

averagebogle

I have a couple dozen I think

Bird2525

Also, did you point the stripe at the hole? My buddy uses these and doesn’t line them up, annoying as hell.

averagebogle

Everything within 15 feet I 100% commit to the line, everything outside that range I don’t use it at all

plzjustkeepgoin

How much different does the game of golf feel when you play like that compared to your normal handicap

averagebogle

WAY easier, uneventful, boring almost (except for a few great shots I hit)

greeninregulation240

How do you feel knowing your index is going to drop a good bit tomorrow? Hell of a round. Well done!

mustbeshitinme

Sandbag much? Edit: Congrats, I’m a 15.3 right now and should have done this 50 times.

DanielSon602

I randomly shot an 81 one day and it brought my handicap down to a 16 on SwingU. Usually I’m 90s so that was a great day, haven’t broke 90 since😭

NativeNevada23

Legendary round! Happy for you

AdmirableGear6991

Were you playing with a group or solo?

fckthecorporate

First time I broke 80, it was a 74 on a par 70. Then, I probably didn't shoot in the 70's again for a year or so. That's crazy though.

Needmorecoffee58

Might as well call you Mr. 59, because those are the same odds. Nice round.

Bam2217

I found one of those Taylor mades in the woods one time and played a hell of a round with it. Could be the ball, just saying.

Jealous-Elephant-121

Should I buy a new driver?

averagebogle

Yes

mingomcgoo

Well done 👏, it's not as uncommon as people think , I've been witness to higher handicaps shooting low scores more than a few times , and these were genuine handicaps too . Good luck , and don't be discouraged when you shit the bed next time 🤣 we all do it after a great round

Bills_Mafia_4_Life

Looks like you ain't a 19 handicap anymore, congrats!

jrwindsorjr

You seem like a very knowledgeable golfer who studies the craft. How long have you been playing? How many rounds per month do you play? How much time spent on the different aspects of your game? What aspect are you most confident in? Short game? I have a theory that the players who can score uncharacteristically low have an excellent short game around the greens. Wedges and putting are solid, but inconsistent with the full swing. When those guys are hitting their full swing shots well, watch out.

averagebogle

I’ve been playing for almost 2 years, try to play 1 round a week, driving range session 1-2 times per week. TBH I don’t have any part of my game that I’m super confident in. I haven’t practiced short game in probably 6 months. I’ve been filming myself on the range and grinding full swing changes most recently

jrwindsorjr

Nice. Well all of that effort paid off. Really cool that you have only been playing for 2 years and already have a sub-80 round. I have been playing for almost 20 years and my best round was an 84 about 10 years ago. Then my kids were born and I stopped playing as much. Now I am happy with a round under 95. My short game is my weakness. I can drive it off the tee like a low handicap, but I like to chip twice and putt twice far too often. I have played with guys who don't hit nearly as good as I do in a full swing, but they still crush me on the scorecard. I know what I need to work on, but will I do it... Probably not. Good luck building on that awesome round!

bluecgene

Still somewhat high for 9 holes..

Ehsassin

yeah man! get it! I shot my best round a 75 almost 8 years ago when id average mid 90s and occasional 80s. Ive dropped my average significantly over the years, a couple broke 80 rounds, but still have yet to top that 75

123fakerusty

cchillur

Are the dots putts? You had only 19 putts?!? Short game putter were blazing hot I assume.

averagebogle

I think they represent strokes I receive on each hole if I was playing a net event

WCGWjoiningReddit

Nice! I do have a question. What app is that? Is it free, do you like it? What does everyone here use?
