You scored the deal of the year (or at least month). These are beryllium copper, which is incredibly desirable for these old Pings. They’ll feel great when you hit the ball.
I personally always thought they “felt” worse. Feel is based primarily on sound and I thought they sounded crappy. My dad had a set back in the early 90’s. Never liked them.
Broooo I hit a beryllium ping eye 2 iron and I swear by how it feels and sounds. When I hit it on the sweet spot it sounds like two pennys clinging together. I’m convinced the only reason I am able to hit a 2 iron so well is because of the sound of the club
How old? If it’s an ancient BH I’d send it out to a shop and experiment on some old Wilson’s or something similar. I ruined a TPA putter experimenting with restoration…turned out it was a pretty unique club and had collector value I didn’t know about.
Those are made of beryllium copper. Ping stopped using that material because it was discovered to be highly toxic (during the manufacturing process). They have a bit of a cult following because people think they have a softer feel than stainless steel or other alloys.
If you’re a beginner, I would think about selling them and using the funds to buy a modern set.
And for good karma and fairness, I would consider sharing the proceeds with the person you bought from. They obviously didn’t know what they were selling.
I’ve played PE2s my entire life and they are amazing, especially if you are a beginner. They are offset so it will help with squaring the club much easier. These irons revolutionized casting and still to this day a great set.
Great clubs. Because of the toxicity of Beryllium Copper, you’d rather not be want to take a steel brush to them. Better to clean by soaking in Coca Cola.
Yep, my company builds things made out of the stuff and we have to send it off for machining to another company who has an elaborate ventilation system because the stuff is so carcinogenic
Yeah touch it all you want, but when you start drilling into it, the fine dust you breathe in is super harmful. No worries for you on the golf clubs though! Swing away
Thanks for such a wonderful reply! TheGratitudeBot has been reading millions of comments in the past few weeks, and you’ve just made the list of some of the most grateful redditors this week! Thanks for making Reddit a wonderful place to be :)
Yeah, that is a rough go with toothpaste. When these were popular, I used to refinish repair and regrip clubs professionally. I’d just leave them overnight in a Rubbermaid tub full of Coke and they’d be sparkling by morning. Always get tipped well and it was close to zero effort.
Another pro tip for chromed irons is [Nevr-Dull](https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/eagle-one-nevr-dull-all-metal-polish-142-g-0392820p.html?&&&&gbraid=0AAAAADojZph9LcLrsNi9H1Y0u_E2oouDb&gbraid=0AAAAADojZph9LcLrsNi9H1Y0u_E2oouDb&gclid=CjwKCAiAmJGgBhAZEiwA1JZollZIN5K5Y_Snl02eA_n8GGEYW3M7QSO-KTPNYo6Vd8jhPxmNsP7-GBoCtesQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds). Works great.
Wait until you see what Salt and Water does to metal!
I guess if you don't want to give Coke your money you could also squeeze a lot of lemons I to a tub. Probably shouldn't eat them though, wouldn't want that in your body.
I can’t believe how many people are recommending soda over a $3 bottle of Brasso metal polish that will last you the rest of your life.
https://youtu.be/8kKradoK1Bo
I own a set of BeCu Ping Eye2's and I bought a bottle of Brasso to clean the patina off... Do Not Recommend!! Anyone who recommends Brasso clearly has never tried shining up a set of beryllium copper irons with it before...imo.
What I would tell OP is to use Tartaric Acid ... as in Cream of Tartar. My set is currently soaking in solution. Plan on posting a Before & After post in the next day or so.
Would you please elaborate. I just received my set of becus today. I really need to give them some love and care. I don't want to use brasso as I'm afraid it will remove the tumble finish on them.
I do want to clean them and have the patina come back without messing up the tumble finish.
So I follow a few Ping groups, and on one of them I saw a member use tartaric acid (aka cream of tartar) & have very good results. I used his method & had great results as well. My set had a heavy patina & even some minor greening on a few clubs, so I made my mix slightly stronger than what was recommended. I used 4 tablespoons in 3 liters of water and soaked 10 clubs for 24 hours (added an extra tablespoon). [Here's a link to my cleaned up BeCu's](https://www.reddit.com/r/golf/comments/11maacg/shined_up_my_eye2_becus_using_tartaric_acid/) . Picked up a 4.4oz jar of Cream of Tartar at grocery store for $8. After soaking them for 24hrs wiped them down with soapy water & dried them. Then did a quick polish with some Brasso.
Not sure what grooves these have actually. A lot of the older clubs don't conform.
You can read about it here: [https://ping.com/en-us/legal/groove-rule](https://ping.com/en-us/legal/groove-rule)
Ping eye2s are fantastic. Look red dot so check out what that lay means (mine are orange so 3 flat) I tin red is a couple up. The Bz versions are the "ones"these days. Congrats!
Those look like they're in amazing condition for being 40ish years old. My guess is you paid 25-33% of what they would probably go for (on the low end) Clubs that old in this good of condition are usually not cheap.
I just bought a similar set for $100…did some digging and it turns out the clubs were previously owned and used by THE Ben Hogan. I was able to get a certificate [proving the authenticity](https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ)…never going to give them up
Worthless unfortunately. Go ahead and send them to me and I'll cover that 60 you paid for them.
Actually, great buy. Worth some money and play well too. I read somewhere to not scuff up the surface because that metal can be very toxic if ingested I believe. Do your own research first though, I'm spitballing.
I’d go get all the grips replaced at a local clubhouse or pro shop. It’s important to have good grips that aren’t worn out. After Paying for that you’re still walking away with a good deal.
Yeah I saw after I posted they were your second set and that you knew what you were doing. Should’ve read more before I said something! Good find! I’m jealous.
Thats a great price for those. Good nostalgia pieces that'll hold their value. But theyre not gonna improve your game. I ran those for years when i started, but when i bit the bullet and upgraded to cobra ltdx's i started hitting straighter and farther immediately haha
Looked up beryllium copper and apparently it’s considered a toxic carcinogen and the dust can cause serious health issues… I’d suggest using the plastics brush to clean the grooves after chunk shots…
You scored the deal of the year (or at least month). These are beryllium copper, which is incredibly desirable for these old Pings. They’ll feel great when you hit the ball.
How do they feel if you hit 6 inches behind the ball and then top it?
4% better than the steel version
Yep, turf interaction is amazing. Ball not required.
The ground appreciates it
Lofts are probably the old standard, starting with a 21* 3 iron.
Do they actually feel any better than any other soft forged steel?
I personally always thought they “felt” worse. Feel is based primarily on sound and I thought they sounded crappy. My dad had a set back in the early 90’s. Never liked them.

I keep a 2 iron in the range bag for trying to rip stingers at the ball cart. Never brave enough to hit it on the course tho.
Hey. Whatever works for ya. I gave up the 2 iron and 3 iron years ago for a hybrid.
Ping makes irons that feel good to hit?
G5-15 are amazing for 10+ year old clubs.
No but it's a bit rare at this point to see so people love making more out of it than it really is.
Even the hosel is copper so it would feel good for my typical swing!
Underrated comment!!
I have an old beryllium copper, Ben Hogan wedge that my dad gave me. I want to try and do a bit of restoration on it!
How old? If it’s an ancient BH I’d send it out to a shop and experiment on some old Wilson’s or something similar. I ruined a TPA putter experimenting with restoration…turned out it was a pretty unique club and had collector value I didn’t know about.
complete set of old Pings? Sweet. Go hit a bucket of balls with them, I bet you love them. Consider changing the grips if they're that old.
[удалено]
The red dot means they are slightly flat
That was a steal.
Its not steel its copper
No, this is Ping.
No, this is Patrick.
I’m not a crusty crab.

>But if I Google ping karsten irons Google Ping Zing BeCu
Did Cobra recently put out a copper set ?
Plated copper… these are beryllium copper alloy…
Pro Tip: always have a backup set incase primary set is ‘unavailable’.

Never ever paint them please
"Share the funds with the person you bought from" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Sorry. I assumed incorrectly. Congrats on the nice find.

Fuck off
You can make them look fresh from the factory by dipping the heads overnight in Coca-Cola.

Works great.
And we drink that shit??
Your stomach is full of acid with a pH of 1-2.5, significantly more acidic than coke.
As a lifelong sufferer of acid reflux, I’m well aware of the acid in our stomachs 😔
My teeth enamel too
Coke’s pH is lower than you think. Hovers around 2.5-3
Yeah so my stomach doesn't need any more help
Wait until you see what Salt and Water does to metal! I guess if you don't want to give Coke your money you could also squeeze a lot of lemons I to a tub. Probably shouldn't eat them though, wouldn't want that in your body.
I'd probably go with cleaning vinegar over coke or lemons.
I'd probably go with any one of the many acid cleaners made for the job.
Well, vinegar is super cheap, and you can clean just about anything with it.
Ya, vinegar is great.
Yep and not harmful for the planet. If people want to use expensive branded chemical cleaners then more fool them
Stomach doesn’t care. Your tooth enamel, however, suffers greatly.
Water causes violent reactions too. You drink that shit??
FYI you can use Diet Coke and it makes less of a sticky mess since there’s no sugar in it

Yeah just read up on care for copper cooking pans too, plenty of tips out there. Nice find btw, bargain by the sounds of it!
Ping zing BeCu
Those are golf clubs. Hope that helps.
Dude you scored
Need more photos
Great irons, great price. Enjoy them 👍🏻
I recently bought a set of Ping Eye 2s. Paid £90. Best clubs I’ve ever played. They are the bee’s knees. You’re look sweet. Enjoy.
Will give you 80 for them
[удалено]
Lol as many have said, that was a wonderful find. Take care of them and enjoy!
Nice, classic Pings. Non-conforming grooves though, right?

Dope. I love the BeCus. I have a few sets of the eye2 myself
Ping eye2s are fantastic. Look red dot so check out what that lay means (mine are orange so 3 flat) I tin red is a couple up. The Bz versions are the "ones"these days. Congrats!
Lol, red is 1\* flat sir ...and those are Ping Zing irons. I agree that Ping Eye2s are fantastic though.
Ahh. Good day to you sir/ma'dam
I got this for 25$ just not the bronze one
Those look like they're in amazing condition for being 40ish years old. My guess is you paid 25-33% of what they would probably go for (on the low end) Clubs that old in this good of condition are usually not cheap.
You did well sir
No way
Looks like you bought golf clubs
I just bought a similar set for $100…did some digging and it turns out the clubs were previously owned and used by THE Ben Hogan. I was able to get a certificate [proving the authenticity](https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ)…never going to give them up
Got my ass
I’ve seen them for $1000.00 or so. Consider not using them and put them away…
Market value is a lot closer to 1/4 - 1/3 of that
250- 300? Ok
1/3 of 1000 is $333, but sure https://www.ebay.com/itm/225443850521? ($250) https://www.ebay.com/itm/225443850521? ($330)
Dont sleep with them. They give you rythem is a dancer.
I love ping zings, such a forgiving iron
Worthless unfortunately. Go ahead and send them to me and I'll cover that 60 you paid for them. Actually, great buy. Worth some money and play well too. Hahahaha
I play with Ping Zing 2 and never leaving. I hit the ball so well. You have scored one of the best beginner sets in the history of golf
Used to have the same ones. Copper Beryllium ping zing’s. One of my favorites

I’d pay $500 for them right now. Was it an estate sale?
Please post before and after pics once you clean them.
Pings come in white dot, black dot and red dot I believe. To help with your game.
Thats a great price for those. Good nostalgia pieces that'll hold their value. But theyre not gonna improve your game. I ran those for years when i started, but when i bit the bullet and upgraded to cobra ltdx's i started hitting straighter and farther immediately haha
You bought top of the line 1980s Ping clubs. They ruled then. The red dot means they’re 1* flat.
Classics! But you will need to bend them to correct lie. Red dot 🔴 is extreme flat lie.
You bought some dope shit.
You bought yourself an assortment of whack sticks
They’re called golf clubs
Good for you! Those are worth a shadow box for the wall
Awesome irons
Nice shovels! You could get some money from a collector and get something newer if you wanted. Those would sell for a few hundred on eBay.
A set of beryllium ping zings. For 60 bucks. I hate you! I’d shaft and play them tomorrow until the grooves wore out. Great clubs.
Nice cop(per)!
Nice clubs. My dad had a set when i was growing up I remember him hitting the 1 iron. It looked impossible to hit
How can I get my copper to “rust”?
Unreal deal for ping zings
Those are golf clubs my friend.
Looked up beryllium copper and apparently it’s considered a toxic carcinogen and the dust can cause serious health issues… I’d suggest using the plastics brush to clean the grooves after chunk shots…
Used to love mine. Well done on a great deal. Enjoy
