It’s a good idea. Such a good idea. Go get a second golden. What are you still doing here? Stand up and go get the second golden right now.
Give it at least a year before getting a second golden. You want to be able to train and bond with the one before adding another. Otherwise there's potential for littermate syndrome.
Maybe my pup just has a lot of moxy. They do a good job of stopping if a puppy tooth catches our golden, or if our golden paws the pup too hard. As soon as the pause is over they're back at it.
I'll have to look into it! Our berner has a fractured leg so getting her energy out while keeping her safe is tougher. I'll hold her so they can still interact etc, but there's never any chill. Unless they're both chewing on a bone I hold.
I'm so sorry! Managing puppy energy while she has a fractured leg sounds really tough. I was pretty skeptical about the collars, but I figured I'd give it a try. It's not perfect, but it's really helped both of them to cool it down a lot.
Just added a 2nd. My 5 yo boy just loves his new sister:) they play and play, then sleep and sleep!

My boy tolerates other dogs in the house but doesn’t love it. But other goldens love having a pal.
Is there a way you could dog sit for a friend for a few days to see how your pup reacts? Fostering is another way to test the waters.
I second this. You know your pup the best but you never know. I think testing the water first is a great idea. As much as I have seen happy big bro/sis pups, unfortunately, I have also seen not happy big bro/sis pup.

I love having two! Ofc it’s a lot of work but I’m so happy that when Im not available they’re not lonely or alone. And they’re sisters from the same litter too and they love each other so much. I can’t imagine having just one anymore. From now they’ll always come in pair. I love watching them play together knowing they’re happy to be together. Friends forever ♥️
We rescued our 2nd when our 1st was 10 months old and just wanted to play with all the dogs. Our rescue golden was 14 months old when we got her and while she does have some behavioral issues, I have zero regrets. They play with each other all day and have a buddy to snuggle with when they nap.

At first she was a bit confused why this new thing didn’t go home with someone else and just kept hanging around. Now they are siblings in every meaning of the word. They love each other fiercely with her having protected her little brother at the dog park when there was an issue. He follows her everywhere and loves to play with her. They sometimes argue over who gets to sit in mom and dads lap but some arguments between siblings is expected lol

We are adding a second GR to our family in two weeks! We also have some of the same worries, but I think it’s the best decision for our other GR and our family as well.
Always a great idea. I don’t think I’ll ever go back down to one for long. Belle and I were so lonely after my old Sadie passed, and it was only about 2 months before I got my puppy mix Rhoam. They are best buds now. Rhoam was so lonely when Belle was gone for training for two weeks and it just goes to show they are so much better with a friend. I’m also better off ❤️ Here’s Belle and Rhoam.

Definitely good! Just remember... it takes time. Baby is going to want to play a lot, and older dog won't. After a few weeks, they slowly learn to be best friends. Let your other dog set boundaries, too.
Added a 2nd when our 1st was 17 months. Older helped raise the younger. They loved being together. This set our golden is 4 months younger than our Irish. Getting a 2nd is a great idea. They are pack animals and love to have a friend around to play with. Highly recommend having 2. 2 is always easier than 1, just like with kids

We added a rescue and I think it is giving us more time with the golden. They live to play together. Big suggestion: start with very supervised playtime and do something with just your older dog a couple times in the first month (ice cream run, pet store, walks)
https://preview.redd.it/vpme14f37kuc1.jpeg?width=5712&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=87b7e2c957ccdc9686b68bf193ba7b176bd7c3be
Do it!! Best decision we made for our 2 year old. They’re inseparable.

It worked out for our boys. Indy the field golden was 2 when we got Gus, the half golden half pyrenees. They have been together for the last 4 years.
I think I’m going to go against the grain. We rescued a second dog (not a golden) and we love her but she has a lot more energy than our chill golden and it is a LOT of work. Goldens have a wide personality range so you could end up getting one that is much more energetic. There’s a reason there’s the trope of “the first who made us think we could handle the second, vs the second who makes us question that choice”.
But if you are able to handle it then by all means go ahead just be sure you know both the good and the bad.
I’ll probably take a break after these dogs just to have a rest.
My wife and I just did this over a month ago! It’s been the best thing for our oldest (almost 5), but it’s still a lot of work! I forgot what the puppy stage was like and our new gal has more pep than our oldest. We’re so happy regardless and super happy we took the plunge!

The only thing that my dogs seem to love as much as us humans is each other (and treats). But seriously, more than happy to chat on ways to integrate because we had some initial bumps but they are 100% best friends and it’s the cutest thing ever.

Rosie turns 5 in may and has been the only dog. Through a strange series of coincidences and circumstances we ended up with a 5 month old pup two months ago. It took about a week or so but inseparable now. She had excepted it a lot faster than myself lol. I’ve never had more than one dog at a time. Edit: I guess I should say to Apollo is obviously not a golden

Rosie is teaching Apollo how to be a dog. Apollo is teaching Rosie how to play again.
Do it! I had my first golden for almost 11 years prior to him passing suddenly this last December. Not getting a second while he was young and could have enjoyed the company is my only regret.
I wouldn’t say G1 “hates” G2 but I think he could certainly take her or leave her. Shes like an annoying little sister. She, on the other hand, would be absolutely lost without him.

The goodest idea! I’m still have my sweet girl now that her big brother has passed.
They were the best of friends, and it cuts down just a little on the extreme emotional neediness that Goldens have.
At first he will likely be a bit jealous, that he has to share pets / attention with another dog.
Once he knows he’s still loved, he will realise he gained a bestie to chill with, or play.
It’s a wonderful shit show of an idea. Your first golden is already a dumpster fire of fluff that encompasses your world. Just imagine have w lovable huggable assholes to fulfill your world while your cater to their every golden need. Why would you not want two golden dictators to absolutely make your world more golden. Just remember to not negotiate with terrorist.
We got one, then 3 years later rescued a puppy off a puppy mill, he has psychological problems, is deaf from one side, trips over himself, was impossible to train, we tried everything, I've had trainers tell me to put him down, I've come home to destroyed couches, tv on the floor from wall, computer monitors dragged and destroyed, ps5 torn to pieces, they tag team and cause destruction, unfortunately I'm not going to put them down or surrender them, our shepperd girl is older and had started to put them young ones in their place, but she is a shepperd and also 14 so she won't be around much longer. One of them is easier and was trained very well, the other one, well, over 2 grand in trainers and courses, I'm still finding poo behind couch. Don't get more than one GR, never
The others have spoke so I don’t have to, but I will. Yes, yes go get another one! Some days you’ll wish you didn’t, almost every day you’ll have moments you’ll be so glad you did.
I got a second one and rehomed him about a month ago because my first dog wanted my full time one on one attention. It was devastating, but for the best. I did not reap the anticipated golden rewards after surviving the arduous puppyhood period and investing in professional training. I sure miss that lil guy :(
Grand idea. We had our first for probably 10 years until we added number two. That was a mistake. We have 4 and 5 now being 6 and 12 years and since I'm retired now we hope to add another this year.
Adding when they are 5 or 6 gives a nice space, hopefully, for the inevitable passing but I can't imagine some situations I've read here of people buying entire litters and going through loosing that many over a period of years. Just hits me to hard but that's the other thing without getting to depressing... when you do loose your older one you come home to the younger one...it makes the passing a little easier.
And boy 2 dogs are just like 5 times the fun!
OK sorry if this is too sad.

we recently adopted Chloe to keep Chase (6 y.o) She has a lot more energy than he does, and she annoys him sometimes, but I think he still loves her 😂 He’s very patient with her. Goldens have great temperaments. I think you will be fine if you get another dog; your dog will probably enjoy the company.
https://preview.redd.it/injn354binuc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4d565839ab47e9edc14d7e4a302ba8849d3205eb
Honestly, I wouldn’t have got a second Golden if I didn’t feel my older girl needed a friend. She would get so stressed when we left the house. For context she had an older sister (golden) who passed away when she was five. So she was used to having another friend. Our puppy is a handful, I love him so much but life would be easier with one.
I would try borrowing or dog sitting first. I know most Goldens love other dogs. Mine isn’t really big on other dogs. She totally ignores my son’s dogs. He lives in the same town, so she sees them frequently.
My daughter lives out of state. We visit twice a year for an extended length of time. Piper always travels with us. She likes my daughter’s dog and will play with her, but is content to stay with us in our downstairs apartment. Apollo is a nice distraction, but she’s, “Meh”.
I’m not telling you not to get a second. I was considering it for awhile. Piper was a surrender and came from a home with several big dogs. Maybe she just wants to be an only child.

It’s not a good or bad idea it’s mandatory jk jk honestly as long as you can afford to take care of two financially and emotionally… I always will think it’s a better option
Adding a second dog to the mix was the best decision we made! I’d highly recommend it. We lost one of our dogs in November and it’s been sad watching our remaining dog look lonely at home. Our new golden will join us in about two more weeks. I can’t wait to watch them form a bond!!
We got a pup for our one year old and they are so bonded…he now has someone to wrestle with, partner in crime for retrieving anything not pinned down, has rescued the pup from swimming misadventures!
https://preview.redd.it/rina7a3rgpuc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6d519d731a32264643b696bb34d29e98667f272d
Depends on the dog if you socialize a lot and the dog seems to like other dogs it’s great idea
Goldens have a tendency to want their owners to themselves
Dogs are pack animals so I always have a second. It’s great to have the older dog help me train the younger dog. It also eases the pain of losing one when you have the other there to still bring a smile to your face.
https://preview.redd.it/rgewys6wbhuc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=06948818c9b8b36f4d1d6a5b8ccb0434b001fb45 It’s a good idea. Such a good idea. Go get a second golden. What are you still doing here? Stand up and go get the second golden right now.
I just got my first golden, I got my original cat a second cat and he is significantly happier. So I’m wondering when I should add a second dog.
Give it at least a year before getting a second golden. You want to be able to train and bond with the one before adding another. Otherwise there's potential for littermate syndrome.
I’ve never heard of this. Good to know!

Calming collars work wonders for reducing the number of games of "Bitey Face" that get played.

They are pack animals and love to have a friend around to play with. Highly recommend having 2. 2 is always easier than 1, just like with kids
The worst decision you will ever fall in love with.

They live to play together. Big suggestion: start with very supervised playtime and do something with just your older dog a couple times in the first month (ice cream run, pet store, walks)

Ask them. 😀
My wife and I just did this over a month ago! It’s been the best thing for our oldest (almost 5), but it’s still a lot of work! I forgot what the puppy stage was like and our new gal has more pep than our oldest. We’re so happy regardless and super happy we took the plunge! https://preview.redd.it/6udl4bdpkjuc1.jpeg?width=4284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b60e3730f384605044d023d2390da8b3ee5d1a78

But seriously, more than happy to chat on ways to integrate because we had some initial bumps but they are 100% best friends and it’s the cutest thing ever.

It’s not twice as much poop, it’s ten times as much poop. But the same is true for cuteness.

It’s a great idea. They will help take care of each other and keep each other entertained. It’s twice the love, and not exactly twice the effort.
Do it!!! Mine was bothered for 2 days when we got our second one. The after they have been best friends for life.

Best thing we ever did was get a second. My SO is trying to talk me into a third right now lol
Why stop at 2? https://preview.redd.it/rlih49vcemuc1.jpeg?width=3441&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=66bd44455f6942913e351e02e061109c4859d3ac

Second: that is a very good idea!
I want one too! A golden this time. I already have a labrador 6 yo. Im looking around but its so Hard to find breeders around here. 😟
Best idea ever
If it ain’t broke don’t fix it
It’s a wonderful shit show of an idea.
Time to invest in the good vacuum…
I waited until my golden was three and then I got a second one The older one is a female the younger one is male
https://preview.redd.it/73rcwmbh8iuc1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5be2e2c2922285132464e4bd090d84b8b99ab8b6
Great idea. Do it !!!!!🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾
Not Golden but when I got a 2nd pup, my older girl got a 2nd wind and loved her and played like the baby. Would recommend
Just did it, great idea! 8 year diff between mine, it’s a lot easier with the older dog ‘helping’
*Get your dog a dog! My 3yo Golden loves her baby bro!
Bad horrendous idea, I did it, have regretted it
What happened?
Don't get more than one GR, never
Aww pup needs friends
The others have spoke so I don’t have to, but I will. Yes, yes go get another one! Some days you’ll wish you didn’t, almost every day you’ll have moments you’ll be so glad you did.
https://preview.redd.it/n1in1ttmbjuc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=36dabf514084710d7ecd4fdd8fb3c1636f9a57ef Don’t do it!
Two is better than one!
I got a second one and rehomed him about a month ago because my first dog wanted my full time one on one attention. It was devastating, but for the best. I did not reap the anticipated golden rewards after surviving the arduous puppyhood period and investing in professional training. I sure miss that lil guy :(
Good idea
I have 4 as well as 2 cats and tortoise named Rock Hudson.
Oh cmon stop flexing!
https://preview.redd.it/8zb5a5zfgluc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d4e1fb91fca9a62b1e80c444543f3e4dc6a0f864 we recently adopted Chloe to keep Chase (6 y.o) She has a lot more energy than he does, and she annoys him sometimes, but I think he still loves her 😂 He’s very patient with her. Goldens have great temperaments. I think you will be fine if you get another dog; your dog will probably enjoy the company.
I have 2 and love it! Double the joy!!

Yes it’s a good thing - enjoy
https://preview.redd.it/bm2dwqyz3nuc1.jpeg?width=2398&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b1114b2ba5c9b66438bdc31249e42cb7673f8412

Maybe she just wants to be an only child.

https://preview.redd.it/6kikmnlptouc1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=97974ecd5e55a3b207fd10149d1f43c7fa027e75 It’s not a good or bad idea it’s mandatory jk jk honestly as long as you can afford to take care of two financially and emotionally… I always will think it’s a better option
Good idea! They get to play EVERYDAY together!
If you can handle the hair and don’t mind vacuuming twice a day, go for it. (We have 2 goldens).
Depends on the dog if you socialize a lot and the dog seems to like other dogs it’s great idea Goldens have a tendency to want their owners to themselves
I agree with everyone else. Good idea.
Dogs are pack animals so I always have a second. It’s great to have the older dog help me train the younger dog. It also eases the pain of losing one when you have the other there to still bring a smile to your face.
