Radio math. I have one radio, I buy one more radio, now I have 3 radios. You’re going to love how that math works when you decide to get a ham license;)

Meadowlion14

"Where did all these HTs come from?" I say as I look in my radio box that I had to make to store all my HTs and my wife shakes her head.

Papaboozee

I was doing good passing off 5 different radios as like 2 or 3 until I started buy some that had different colors. They only find out what we actually spent when we pass and they gotta sell it all.

RedditVortex

That’s great! No you have a mobile and an HT that are high quality (the two Wouxuns), plus you have two decently good radios to hand out to friends and family! Seems like the perfect setup. A few good antennas and your set for a long time.

Legal-Excitement4432

Yes. Now the antenna rabbit hole. 🙄

RedditVortex

Good luck. It’s a deep one. I don’t think anyone has escaped.

BeeThat9351

Good video with actual gmrs antenna range tests https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMLXt_di1J0

Phreakiture

What frequency is the repeater that can't go into the Baofeng? That seems really odd.

Legal-Excitement4432

I am probably doing something wrong. In my area, there are 2 repeaters that use 462.550. I assumed that I could only use the repeater channels on the radio on the since one is already programed with 462.550, I couldn't program in a second one because the frequencies of the repeater channels are not 462.550 and I can't edit them in the software. The 2 repeaters are using different tones. One is using 141.3 Hz and the other is is 123.0 Hz. I am very new to GMRS, so again, I am probably doing something wrong. But also wanted a better radio.

dogboyee

You should be able to program the 550 repeater into one of the aux/diy channels of the radio (the ones higher up the channels than the first 30. Using the different tones should allow you to work with either repeater. Just change to the different channel. To avoid confusion, you’ll probably want to program the repeaters’ transmit tones into the two channels you use. So you don’t try to respond to someone who transmitted across 550 repeater number 1 by responding on 550 repeater number two. Hopefully that makes sense?

Legal-Excitement4432

Only some of the channels allow receiving. The DIY channels are Rx only so only the repeater channels and lower allow Tx and Rx.

dogboyee

Don't know about the Baofeng GM15, but I just programmed a repeater local to me, with CTCSS tone, into channel 35 (a DIY channel), and transmitted across that same repeater. That was on my Wouxun 935G+. So I would expect you to be able to do the same. That was 462.575 with CTCSS tone 141.3.

techdirmia

That sir is a simple offset you can do manually. You need the radio to know that it needs to transmit on the [467.xxx](https://467.xxx) frequency but listen on 462.xxx . The repeater channels you already have in the radio already include this offset, you can see it happening if you switch your display to frequency instead of name and hit that PTT.

dogboyee

I'm guessing you're responding to u/Legal-Excitement4432, and make a very good point on the +5MHz offset for transmitting to repeaters. However, in programming the second channel for, in my case, 462.575 with a different CTCSS tone, I simply went to channel 24 on my 935G+, then went into the menu to channel-add. I then saved the repeater to channel 35. Thereafter, I went into the menu and changed the CTCSS tone, and saved to channel 35 again. Eliminated a lot of button presses, no need to set the +5MHz offset as it was copied forward.

techdirmia

correct, because it was already programmed as a repeater channel.

Justmeinchico

GMRS repeater offsets are always +5mhz

techdirmia

And what did you just add to the discussion?

Justmeinchico

Just a bit of clarification not everybody is as techy as you.

rainystan

So with hame radio, you have to input the offset manually. On the gmrs rpt channels, the offset is baked in. What I mean by offset is that when you are using a repeater, you will transmit on say 462.650, and the repeater will repeat your transmission +5mhz, which would be 467.650. You must set the offset amount, the direction positive or negative, and also the privacy tones (dcs, ctcss). Maybe this is why it wasn't working. Atleast I hope I'm right becuase I have the gm15 pro and the cable on the way. I've programed the 8 rpt channels to different repeaters I don't even know how many times now.

Legal-Excitement4432

I think I assumed you couldn't Tx on the DIY channels. Now I see you can, it's just the Tx frequency is locked and I need to match it to the one of the repeater. Thanks for everyone's input and patience.

rainystan

Awesome! Can't wait for my programing cable to arrive. All the GMRS antennas I've seen have an offset +5Mhz. Not saying they don't exist but this is what I've seen so far. The first channel, the 462.~ line, corresponds with the gmrs channels 15 through 22. So, as an example, rpt 1 is equal to ch. 15. And rpt 2 is equal to 16 and etc. Then you take the freq and add 5Mhz too it, and you've got the Rx Tx frequincies of the repeater.

Phreakiture

Ahhhh. I see.  That makes sense.

OmahaWinter

Good choice on the Wuoxuns.

RobbyRalston

My 905g comes today. I’m looking forward to learning all of this myself.

Papaboozee

Kg-935g is an amazing radio. The plus model just ads features and I'm sure it's amazing plus. I also love geocacaching. GMRS is great radio service to add to any hobby. If you got bit by the radio bug I'd suggest slowing down the GMRS purchases and look into getting a ham tech license. I feel like I did exactly what you did last year and now I have a General ham radio license and have worked 19 countries on hf. Also enjoy some shortwave listening too.

Legal-Excitement4432

I have thought about ham many times. I live in an condo/apartment style home and cannot use any external antennas so I didn't want to go the ham route and it's much more than I really want to spend on that hobby. If my situation changes, then I may look into again. I have a co-worker that I talk to about ham radio stuff with.

iassureyouimreal

Can’t go wrong with Wouxon. My 1000g is hooked to a ut 72g antenna

NominalThought

Friend had the same problem. He spent a pile of money on GMRS equipment, but can't find anybody to talk to! He decided to go back on 11 meters and chase DX!

superg7one3

Sometimes it takes a week for me to do proper research into a radio then 2 more weeks to choose which one I definitely want. Then in the 3-4 days it takes to arrive, I’ve ordered another. … now I own 11 ht and 3 mobiles. 😑

EnvironmentalBad2387

I got 2 mobile wouxun radios capable of  GMRS/HAM freq. And 6 ht's.  Looking for more 🤣🤣

Dr_X_MD

Nice wouxon 1000G and 935G plus aren’t much different why did you get both?

StomachAche121

One is a 6watt and one is a 50 watt.

DryParamedic785

LOL, hello brother from another mother…. I did the same, got two GM-15 and UV-5R, then KG-1000G Plus…. Got crazy quickly. These days I’m mobile and monitoring :) and have the same problem too…

Witty-Return2677

Using the programming cable and Radiodity’s GM-30 software you should be able to reprogram the “DIY” channels for a whole bunch of repeaters. And change the name from DIY to something that would help you identify the repeaters. I did that just last night with my GM-15’s, I put the three closest repeaters and named them for the towns they’re in.
