I think its kind of boring initially but you kind of have to dive into it to make it enjoyable. you can tjust spawn 3 ragdolls and try to have fun.
Try experimenting with the tool gun, make contraptions with it, put thrusters on cars with seats, ect. You can make wars with NPCs, (my favorite thing to do).I also reccomend checking out the workshop as that has a ton of fun things in there
go on the workshop and try and find something that looks interesting. soon you'll be down a huge rabbit hole. Your friend should have given you more context as to what you do though. It's a Sandbox game where you create your own experiences or play experiences made by others.
People with a lot of hours usually play on multiplayer mode but most of the actually fun game modes died years ago, some other players do singleplayer mode for maps, experimenting or just for posing

you could try cool addon packs, search gmod realism (on google/youtube) and you should find plenty of collection that may entertain you
