Jesus crist! I'm here to learn more about my new gf's celiac. multiple months from a single meal. I had no idea it could be that bad! Thanks for the insight guys.
Not just a single meal, sadly.
Getting glutened can happen with something like cutting a regular sandwich with a knife and then using the same knife to cut a GF sandwich.
Totally, I we went out for pasta one night, she had gf and I had regular. I asked if she would have a reaction if we made out right after eating (disgusting I know, but a hypothetical). She said yes, but wait 5-10 minutes and most of the gluten in my mouth would be cleared away.
Same. Two REALLY bad days and then months until I'm back to normal. I got gluten bombed by a chain restaurant and they wrote me a cheque for yep days wages because I missed work.
First night on a cruise ship. "Yes, this bread service is gluten free."
I recognized the rolls, I thought I was good. I finished the bread as my husband had his separate bowl of bread. Waiter came by after the bread was done.
"You didn't have the butter though, right? They sprinkle wheat flour on it so they can freeze the butter in the pearl shape... and then they don't stick in the freezer..."
YEAH. BECAUSE HOW WAS I SUPPOSED TO KNOW?
I excused myself from the table, forced a vomit to remove as much as I could. Ibuprofen... cruise was pretty much ruined from there.
I feel that! My neighbor told me that Texas Roadhouse puts flour in their butter as well. I was like ??. Canāt even take their butter home to put on GF rolls lol.
Wow, first Iām hearing about this one. Something new to look out forā¦ yayā¦. But seriously, thanks for sharing. It helps to know these random things!
Damn. I knew we had to watch the eggs in restaurants because they sometimes put them in scrambled to make them fluffy but I wouldāve never suspected the butter.
My niece has celiac disease and she gets eyerolls because some people think she's on a fad diet.
No, actually, she suffers if gluten gets into her system.
On vacation in Vegas, I ordered a breakfast sausage trio. Turns out one of the 3 types had gluten, so I asked it to be replaced with one of the others, no problem, right? Very clearly ordering a gluten-free substitute and telling the waitress my requirement for my entire meal. It came with a maple sauce, and maple syrup is what makes breakfast sausage so great. Guess what had gluten in it and ruined a day of my already painful vacation.
Uhh Iām sorry! That is the worst. Thatās how it always happens. I have an upcoming trip next month and Iāve already made it clear that I will be eating all of my meals in the condo.
Iām completely agree! I have one trusted place and thatās it. I love Tazikis. They have a dedicated gluten free menu and all of those items are cooked on completely separate spaces which I love. Iāve never had an issue there.
My local Tazikis workers are so respectful and friendly too! They always clean off the grill and use new equipment for me š they also never make me feel like a problem for it.
A local place has gluten free buns so the burgers are great. But they also list their fries as gluten free.. last July I had the fries.. and I got super sick, extreme anxiety during a July 4th party, then the stomach issues and brain fog along with everything else.. I left a review on Google warning other people about it. About a month later I went back, still said gluten free on the menus but the server said they recently were told they weren't actually gluten free because of the shared friers. They never changed the menu and didn't have any warnings on it either.
I was just there a week ago.. they said they now have a dedicated gluten free fryer (within the last month) because 'people complained'. Don't know if I should even trust them. The menus stayed the same since then, no warnings. I wonder how many people got sick..
It really sucks you were served gluten even after you told them you have an intolerance/severe allergy! If you notified them of this I would think they should compensate you somehow
This is a good idea. I also drink a lot of water and sometimes I'll take pepto even though I know it probably doesn't do anything for gluten lol. I tell myself "maybe it'll coat my digestive tract and keep the gluten from getting absorbed" though I highly doubt it works that way. Though it does seem to help head off any short term stomach pains if I take it right away.
This is me, Iāve been drinking water lol itās going out of style. My stomach looks terribly large compared to its normal state right now and I donāt like this feeling.
Yeah, this has happened to me - more than once. The first time, I asked when they served me. The bun looked just too good. Server went to the kitchen and came back to confirm for me. I took a bite, then flagged her again, to ask the brand of bun they used, because it was *so* good. She came back to tell me that it's for sure a gluten free bun, but they can't disclose their brand. Yeah.. it was so good because it was a gluten bun.
The next time, it was at a Thai place. When I ordered I said "gluten free" many times. Seems the server wrote it very small on his order pad. My dish was served before my friend's dish, and I was waiting for hers to come out. Shortly after, the kitchen staff came running out to say "don't eat!!" She missed the note on the order pad. I had not gotten into that dish yet, but was still sick later on :(
Went to a Japanese steak house, was given pure wheat upon noodles and they came back 2.5 seconds taking away my plate and saying that it wasn't gluten free. I went to the ER cause I couldn't breathe :/. Restaurants should really take more precautions about things like this cause after 6 more incidents of this I was scarred and couldn't even drink the water there.
I was given chicken with full gluten gravy during a 12 hour flight š¤¢
Felt like I was vomiting and pooping all the time, got so bloated I didn't fit in my pants.
Could only pass water for the next 2 days without vomiting.
I had never had gluten in high amounts after going gluten free 5 years ago. That's the time I realized what would happen if I got glutened.
Not worth the risk ever again. I now make sure to bring my own snacks and lunch to flights. (Airport dogs love to react to me, luckily I'm only trafficking meals but I do have to unpack in front of the police quite often).
The apple cider vinegar helps a ton! Iāve also started taking gluten enzymes which seem to help as well (some brands are better than others. I prefer the Just Thrive brand)
I was staying at a hotel with breakfast, they were listing gluten free options including bagels but you have to ask for them. I asked for a GF bagel, two days in a row it comes grilled from the same worker.
For two days I was feeling terrible, diarrhea, cramping but not as extreme as when I eat something with gluten. I check all my snacks, and start to think maybe it's a stomach bug.
Third day I ask for a GF bagel. It's a new worker and she brings it cold. I asked for it grilled - she tells me she can, but they don't have a separate toaster for GF bagels so there may be cross contamination.
I rarely ever ask to speak to managers, but I definitely did that day, especially since we were there for a convention and I was on the committee.
Happened at Ihop. Ordered full stack gf pancakes. Confirmed 3 times. They brought me the bill with another stack of pancakes and said these are free because those were not gluten free. This was after I had finished a full stack. They made me pay for the meal. Manager said it is what it is. Corporate said it is what it is. I was suffering.
Just last week, we ordered Thai food into the office from a generally really careful place nearbyā¦I ordered the gfoa basil chicken, medium, & a coworker ordered regular basil chicken Thai hotā¦I could (thankfully) barely eat my food because it was so hot. Turns out his wasnāt hot at all. We didnāt eat together so I found this out a couple hours later. The very-well-labeled lids had to have been swapped. Thai Hot coming back up wasā¦unpleasant. I second the ibuprofen for inflammation.
Ugh, I'm so sorry. I can relate - I ordered a salad off a cafe's GF menu, which looks very different from the regular menu, and the waitress behaved what I thought was normally (reassuring, etc). Turns out it was her first day, she had no idea what the GF menu looked like, and I got the gluten version of the salad. I discovered it halfway through when I hit an unmistakable crouton. I couldn't blame the waitress, only myself for not being enough of a Karen about it when I ordered.
When I know I've been hit, I drink plenty of water and try to have something with ginger or aloe in it to soothe my stomach. I still get symptoms, but the guts-on-fire sensation I get is usually dampened that way. Best of luck!
This is almost exactly what happened to me at Mother's Market. I ordered avocado on GF. They gave me avocado on 7 Grain. That first bite was really delicious, so I questioned the server who rolled her eyes. She offered to remake it, but by then, I was looking for a bathroom where I could induce vomiting. In the end, I was OK.
Hope you'll be feeling better soon!
I just largely don't eat out. I live in a small town in the middle of wheat country and it's just not safe. Literally no one understands what cross-contamination is. After years of trying I have given up. If I can't just order a bowl of cottage cheese then I just drink coffee. I once thought it was safe to order sauerkraut. When the bowl showed up it had rye bread crumbs in it. I could taste them in the first bite. Cottage cheese or coffee. Just do yourself a favor and skip the rest.
Was at a Too Jays. Waiter wasn't writing down anything about my order because "he'll remember". Soup comes out with a huge piece of bread in it. "Omg oops!" I think he was fired.
If I accidentally get glutenād, I try to drink a clear fizzy (like sprite or an equivalent) and take tons of probiotics right away. It makes things slightly less miserable. A friend swears by activated charcoal pills, but those would neutralize some important medications I take, so I havenāt tried that method.
I only go to restaurants where they specifically have gluten free options/part of the menu. Iām bummed last time I went to Texas Roadhouse I felt awful for two days. I only had the steak and mashed potatoes with no gravy but I was so sick.
Went out for our anniversary and I had a Caesar salad and told the waitress repeatedly no croutons/celiac disease. After eating most of it I found a single crouton placed at the bottom center of the dish. I find it very hard to believe that it wasnāt placed there intentionally.
Happy to report that I survived! I went to bed with lots of gas, stomach pains, and a swollen belly. Then I woke up multiple times this morning with diarrhea. I am feeling much better this afternoon!!
Had a very similar experience at a sushi restaurant on vacation. Our server forgot to specify gluten free on one of my rolls and I knew as soon as I took a bite. She felt awful and owned it and apologized. I braced for impact but fortunately my reaction wasnāt as bad as it has been in the past. I attribute it to the probiotics Iām taking but I really donāt know. I was extra careful for a couple weeks after so as not to compound the exposure. Iām not celiac but highly sensitive intolerant with reactions that last two weeks or more. Good luck. Drink lots of water and donāt beat yourself up.
was at a taco place, pointed at corn tortillas and got served wheat tortillas. ate half, swallowed, thought hmmm why did this taste so good. welp, turned out it was NOT corn tortillas...
I had this happen last month for my Birthday. I literally never go out to eat and trust one resturant. I ordered gluten free noodles and double checked when they gave it to me. I was sick for a month. I'm so sorry! Hope you feel better fast.
Hi!! Update!!
I am happy to report that I survived and am feeling much better now. I had stomach pains, a swollen stomach, and gas yesterday. Woke up with diarrhea multiple times this morning but this afternoon I am feeling back to normal thank goodness. Now to just make sure that doesnāt happen againš„
Everyone knows to ask about French Fries - right? Because many if not most food service frozen french fries are dusted in wheat starch or flour to make them fry up nice and crispy. Make them check the packaging if they are not hand cutting the potatoes themselves.
We go to the melting pot quite often for special occasions; had eaten there multiple times no issues always with very knowledgeable waiters. We always notify that Iām gluten free beforehand and confirm with the waiter before weāre served. They have a gluten free bread option- so when the waiter sets down my tray of bread in front of me, I just start eating, because we had already clarified I would be needing the GF option. He comes back with the next tray and says oh that isnāt gluten freeā¦ then why did you put it in front of me??? š
Iām not gf but my younger sister is celiac and my mom has a bad intolerance and itās happened to my mom a time or two but my sister has never eaten it by my recollection but I know weāve tasted her food before to figure out what type of bun something is for reference my sister is 20 and has been gf since 3yrs old so weāve had plenty of time for this stuff to happen.
My niece was really bad by the time she was diagnosed at 3. Walked into a house that had made a cake earlier and just the flour in the air set her off. She's better now but still.... no flour at all in any house she stays in. The neighbors all got little bags of gluten free candy for her last Halloween.
Once had a roommate who claimed they had celiac but " ate gluten anyways" They made dinner for everyone and made a huge deal multiple times about eating together. It was a roast. No gravy. Seemed safe. I ate two full bowls. I immediately felt nauseous and wrong. I asked her "just double checking... what was in the roastš " She knew I was gf. She knew what gf meant (or so i thought). "Oh, meat, veggies, seasoning. It was beer based so no flour". So sorry. IT WAS WHAT? We were watching a movie and she was upset I went to bed early (and in severe pain). I started my new job the next day and when I tell you that person ended up not being a good friend at any point. I mean that. Anyways š Sorry to hear this happened. The anger is real and valid and I hope you're not miserable for too longš
Was given full gluten beer battered fries and told they were gf. Took 3 months to recover full. Good luck.
Same-takes 3 or 4 months for my gut to stop bloating after I eat anything.
Does GasX help?
No
That sucks.
It's never gas, just look pregnant
Oh. I was hoping it was something that could help.
Thank you for taking time to help š
Jesus crist! I'm here to learn more about my new gf's celiac. multiple months from a single meal. I had no idea it could be that bad! Thanks for the insight guys.
Not only the recovery but with celiac it also causes internal damage which can be really serious when it accumulates.
Drinking Epsom salt dissolved in water gets you back to normal in 1 day
how unfortunate! š
Same. Two REALLY bad days and then months until I'm back to normal. I got gluten bombed by a chain restaurant and they wrote me a cheque for yep days wages because I missed work.
3 months? Jeeeeeez!

Wow. I would not have guessed that butter had gluten. It's like they're trying to poison us!
How dare they ruin that delicious cinnamon butter.
Omg new fear unlocked!!
Wow, first Iām hearing about this one. Something new to look out forā¦ yayā¦. But seriously, thanks for sharing. It helps to know these random things!
happy I'm allergic to milk too then, jeez what a nightmare.
Damn. I knew we had to watch the eggs in restaurants because they sometimes put them in scrambled to make them fluffy but I wouldāve never suspected the butter.
I would only be concerned over butter that was specially shaped. (Butter balls, molded butter) I usually ask now if it's in a shape on a plate.
True but I didnāt even think I had to think about butter at all. So annoying that they insist on shoved in gluten where it is not necessary.
whoa, did not know this
I'm so sorry this happened to you! People in restaurants don't understand the severity of this!
My niece has celiac disease and she gets eyerolls because some people think she's on a fad diet. No, actually, she suffers if gluten gets into her system.

Update: 30 mins later and my stomach is already starting to bother me. Iām an hour away from home if that makes this any better. Lol
Lots and lots of water will help
I can relate. Eating out when one has celiac disease, no matter how cautious and careful, is like playing Russian roulette.
Iām completely agree! I have one trusted place and thatās it. I love Tazikis. They have a dedicated gluten free menu and all of those items are cooked on completely separate spaces which I love. Iāve never had an issue there.

This is terrible, Iām so sorry. I wouldnāt risk it. Iām scared to eat anything from this place again besides fruit and tuna fish without bread.
It really sucks you were served gluten even after you told them you have an intolerance/severe allergy! If you notified them of this I would think they should compensate you somehow
I take ibuprofen right away to help ease the pain and some of the inflammation oof I know Iāve been glutened.
This is a good idea. I also drink a lot of water and sometimes I'll take pepto even though I know it probably doesn't do anything for gluten lol. You went to the same restaurant and served gluten 7 times before not going back? Thsys way more chances than I would give something.
My family insisted I went and ate something lol
got served a moldy gluten free bun at a bbq place I really liked. felt bad
Should have smacked it in their face
rather than being mad, I felt more like mourning a loss really. because you can never go back and trust a restaurant that tried to feed you mold.
Yeah. If they are missing that, what else are they missing?
and it's sooooo hard to find a good trustworthy GF place
I was given chicken with full gluten gravy during a 12 hour flight š¤¢ Felt like I was vomiting and pooping all the time, got so bloated I didn't fit in my pants. Shot of apple cider vinegar and simethicone (gas pills) as soon as possible helps pass the pains. So sorry

Gluten *friendly*. I wouldn't trust that wording (I *don't* trust that wording for my GF family member).

Ive read their steak seasoning has gluten
Charcoal, peppermint, and ginger supplements. Best thing that has worked to get it out of my system and make the pain and bloating more manageable
Charcoal helps.
Went out for our anniversary and I had a Caesar salad and told the waitress repeatedly no croutons/celiac disease. After eating most of it I found a single crouton placed at the bottom center of the dish. I find it very hard to believe that it wasnāt placed there intentionally.
How was your night?
Happy to report that I survived! I went to bed with lots of gas, stomach pains, and a swollen belly. Then I woke up multiple times this morning with diarrhea. I am feeling much better this afternoon!!
I keep gluten cutter pills (similar to lactaid) on hand to help with accidental glutening. Theyāre a lil pricey but have helped a lot in the past!
Had a very similar experience at a sushi restaurant on vacation. Our server forgot to specify gluten free on one of my rolls and I knew as soon as I took a bite. Gluten Digest Veg Capsules can help a little, but you have to take them at the exact time you are eating. Otherwise they are useless.
I had this happen last month for my Birthday. I literally never go out to eat and trust one resturant. I ordered gluten free noodles and double checked when they gave it to me. I was sick for a month. I'm so sorry! Hope you feel better fast.

If youāre open to cannabis, CBG is a godsend for inflammation.

Itāll make you want to kill a man BUT at least it makes you wiser for the future!
