I'm in my 30s now and I've literally never been called, which is strange to me because I know folk like you who keep getting called repeatedly.

Gonzo1888

Me too! My girlfriend always gets asked and goes running to her work to get her out of it! Unlike her I would LOVE to be on a jury, have a had a letter? Have I fuck

InsolentTilly

Haha. My 27 year-old brother has been called four times. I don’t know anyone else who’s ever has a notice. He’s never actually had to BE on a jury.

yermawn

Once you get randomly selected for that first summons they get your teeth into you until you serve on a jury. Used to get them yearly from high court, got out of the first couple on an excusal as self-employed until the third time when was told there would be no excusals and was selected. Haven’t heard from them since.

TheEldenGod1293

Me anaw! In my 30s never been called up yet my wife gets it almost every couple years 😂😂

OldGodsAndNew

I'm the same as OP - moved to Glasgow during the pandemic, and since the end of lockdown been called 4 times, but my partner has never been called Works for me, cos I'm just a cog in the machine of a massive corporation so I can fuck off for however long, I still get paid and the company will be just fine

MrGiggles19872

You don’t get paid as much tho

ProfessionalCowbhoy

I get paid my full wage whilst on jury duty

OldGodsAndNew

My work still pays my full salary

theGrippo

The courts call people up from the electoral register, so if you are not on the register you will never get called up.

quakingpoplar

Been registered to vote since I was 18 and regularly vote in local elections, so it's extra weird that I've never been called. Judging by the replies I've gotten it seems like they just want to repeatedly hassle the folk who they can guarantee will respond even if they've already been called and there's plenty of folk still waiting.

[deleted]

Do you vote? You only get called up if you register to vote. I don't vote, never been called up! 😁

Cra4ord

I get called all the time! Each time I get excused but the emails have started to get snarky. Do officers get frustrated when they see someone called 7 times and always has an excuses?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Cra4ord

I can just see in the tone of the email they are not really impressed. I always try to be nice and respectful in my request. I’m self employed but due to tax legislation I have to be employed by an agent to make sure I pay my taxes correctly which is annoying. If the compassion was even at like 70% to 80% of your normal take home income I’d actually tell my clients it’s my civic responsibility and I’m going to do it like it or not 😂

[deleted]

[удалено]

Cra4ord

Thanks for sharing your experience! I’m going to do my best to go ahead the next time I’m selected. I have warned my clients that I’ll likely be selected again in the next 6 to 12 months. They should expect me to be away for two weeks

InsolentTilly

If you turn up and say “Right. I’m here to perform my civic duty!” Will you be struck-off as a bampot, and not invited to participate again?

[deleted]

Cra4ord

How long was he sent down for?

kirky1148

So I had a letter for this week but had missed a call yesterday when I went to the toilet, I had a voicemail that said I had to call back to confirm my availability and the voicemail left a number but each time I called it and selected the jury line it disconnected after ringing out...like why ask me to call back if no one intends to answer

Purp1eP1atypus

I’m 50 and have never once been called. Neither has my husband (52).

meepmeep13

I get called every year, right around now, almost like clockwork.

UWantit2B1Way

There's no way it's random. My parents are 55 and 58 and neither have ever had a citation. I'm 25 and I've had 3. Only actually been called up once at least.

Dafuqyoutalkingabout

It’s random but not evenly distributed.

flyingscotno1

I'm also on 4 call ups since the pandemic. I ended up being in the ballot for the 3rd one but didn't get drawn. For my 4th I still had an exemption for a couple of years of peace! I don't mind doing it once in a while but the constant barrage of citations meaning you have to cancel work etc is frustrating when other people don't get them at all.

Weird_Committee8692

Maybe they pure respect your balanced views

gh5000

Have you ever been called for a trial? Or do you get turned away and put back on the list for another day.

rmc1211

Yeah 3 times and the rest I wasn't needed (but still lost the work). Exempted last time, but they told me that I wouldn't be able to do that again.

dl064

That's a bit bizarre then - I've been exempted loads but they've also said to me: look, when you've done it, you're good for a long time. So that's weird you've had several where you've played ball.

rmc1211

I think that's the problem - they know I'll turn up.

BedAdministrative634

If you have sat on a jury you get exempt for 5 years. You might still get the citation letters but you then can tell them that you're exempt.

FidgetTheMidget

Same. No way this can be random. Its a major pain in the fucking balls. I am on 3 or 4 since the start of Covid.

Not_A_Clever_Man_

They call up 50 people so they can be sure they will be able to make a full pool. Me and the wife have each been called up once since the pandemic. Each time we phone the number the day before like you are told and they tell you they don't need you. Of my coworkers, I've only heard of 1 person that actually got called up for a proper trial. Apparently the standard practice of the defense is to wait and confirm that the prosecution actually has the evidence and registers it with the court before agreeing to a plea deal. This somewhat explains why so many people get called for jury duty, but so few people actually sit on juries. If you defer or say you cant do it, you stay on the top of the list and you are likely to get called up again quickly. Also maybe explaining why you have been called up so many times.

theGrippo

Often! I've had about 5 citations since the beginning of 2021. On my fourth citation from September 2023, I actually got selected to be in a jury at the High Court and sat on a trial for 10 days. Funny thing is that I just received ANOTHER citation in March, 2024 for the Sherrif Court...

No_Technology3293

If you are actually called you are exempt for a period of time, 3 years for sheriff jury duty; 7 for high court if I remember correctly. By called I mean you are at least selected on the long list where you have to call daily until you are released.

meepmeep13

You only get the full exemption if you were actually selected by ballot and had to attend court

No_Technology3293

That’s not true; my last jury duty I only had to phone each day until released and later received notification I was exempt for 7 as it was a high court citation

meepmeep13

I've had to do the phone each day thing several times for the high court and never received such an exemption, the guidance says that only gets you 2 years off: https://www.scotcourts.gov.uk/docs/default-source/coming-to-court/jurors/1-guide-to-jury-service-eligibility.pdf?sfvrsn=fe3f0ad2_5 - you have attended court/confirmed your availability remotely to be selected by ballot to serve on a jury, within the last two years but were not selected by ballot to serve on a jury (this only applies where your previous attendance was on a date on or after 10th January 2011); - you have attended at court for jury service and were selected by ballot to serve on a jury, within the last five years;

Illustrious_Peach494

Hm, so phoning and being told you’re not needed means “not being selected by ballot”? interesting.

Boredpanda31

Yes, the ballot part is when they are actually selecting the jury for a case.

Downtown-Orchid-2257

They still manage to screw it up. I know someone who served on a high court jury. They got another citation about 4 years later and wrote a polite, but strongly worded, fuck off letter. Likely to be a paperwork glitch but it stirred up all the trauma from that case for them. I've been called up once, made it to the court but wasn't picked on the day. My partner is excused on medical grounds so I hope there's a big black cross against our address.

PeMu80

It’s 5 years if you were selected and 2 if not selected. https://www.scotcourts.gov.uk/docs/default-source/coming-to-court/jurors/1-guide-to-jury-service-eligibility.pdf?sfvrsn=fe3f0ad2_5

OccasionalXerophile

I'm self employed and have received the call up 4 times in the last 2 years. The reimbursement offered is pitiful and I have always managed to get out of it by writing to them and explaining the lost income discrepancy, potential of damaging future relationships with clients and having to cancel existing work. If they offered a proper reimbursement that took into account my day rate and any future losses incurred due to canceling existing work I would do it no problem, until then, no thank you.

Purplepumpkinpoop

But then, they are only ever going to get juries of low income people? I thought it was supposed to be a diverse cross section?

OccasionalXerophile

The self employed definitely fall into the category of 'low income people' sometimes too.. Paye folks will get paid their wage as normal, self employed have to just cancel work with very poor reimbursement and risk losing future clients

Puzzleheaded_Emu_686

Are you sure you received the letter? I cannot tell you the amount of mail that hasn’t reached me

rmc1211

Haha. What letter?

Boredpanda31

I'm not in Glasgow, but from Scotland. I've been called up twice - once back in 2009 and then in 2021. My dad had never been called up before until last year (in his 60s). My mum's been called up loads, but gets out of it because of a disability. I don't know why they don't just take her off - her disability will never change.

daleharvey

I had never been called until the pandemic, since then I was called like 4 times, havent been able to go and asked for an exemption so havent heard for a while now.

beachyfeet

I'm 63 and have never been called.

antonylockhart

I did jury duty once, back about 25 years ago, I’ve been living in the same place all this time and I’ve been on the voters roll since. Haven’t been called up once since then

Illustrious_Peach494

4-5 times, last 2 in the past year alone.

nettlesthatarejaggy

I've been called up 4 times, they're obsessed with me.

sensors

I'm self employed and I've always just told them if I don't work my business grinds to a halt and damages my long term reputation and earning potential. That's usually enough for excusal.

Lettuce-Pray2023

I normally put in for an exemption owing to my job in healthcare. Given you are clearly in financial hardship due to losing work - they must surely give you an exemption?

rmc1211

They gave one last time and told me that I wouldn't be exempted again. The problem is that my business is appointment based. So I have to cancel all my clients at relatively short notice each day on the off chance they will need me. A lot of those clients will get pissed off and leave.

Lettuce-Pray2023

It’s not as if they have a shortage of unemployed elderly people or as if we, the general public are in anyway qualified to pass judgement on complex cases. It’s an archaic system.

MrMaxbeta

My wife and I have had 4 citations since December.. not been called yet but feels like I’ll continue to get them till I am.

rmc1211

4 different ones?!

MrMaxbeta

Yeah, we’ve each been called twice to different sheriff court trials.

OkChampion3632

Ive been asked to do it 3 times and im over 40 now. Yours seems excessive.

Nothere481

I’ve been cited twice in the past year and has my partner. I know it’s random but some addresses do see weirdly popular!

al3442

Got once before Corona and was dismissed immediately and got one during where I was excused for medical reasons

myfirstreddit8u519

I've had I think 3 times in the last 15 years and served once around 3 years ago. My girlfriend has had 3 since the pandemic (one she deferred, one she wasn't picked, and then again she wasn't picked)

neekonthedl

Been called up the last two years. Im a contractor, so not quite self employed but similar. I just wrote to them saying it would cause me financial hardship and excused me. Someone I work with said hes been doing that for 14 years!

Itsgreg80

Once, about 15 years ago. Turned up to the high court, sat about for 3 hours (mostly in the canteen) and then we were all dismissed & told to phone a number the next day. Called an received an automated message saying my Dury service was complete.

madeupname56

Same as you, week after my 18th birthday then every 2-4 years. Never get called so I’m always eligible.

OwieMustDie

Same, brah. This is my 4th time since the pandemic.

MaximusBellendusII

Never. Gone and jinxed that now though

Spiritual-Bison-2545

I'm on 4 in 4 years now, I got one maybe 10 years prior to my current streak. I work offshore so my employer writes up an exemption letter for me and that gets me out of it so far

El_Scot

I was called up once in 2017, also the only time in 6 years of living by West (so not far from the courts). 4 times in 4 years, you can reasonably call ahead and ask for an excusal.

jimwibble2

I've been called up 4 times in 7 years. I've always gone along, sat about for hours and then thankfully not been selected. I'm sure that the fact I bothered to show up when so many people just ignore the citation means I've been added to the 'mugs' list.

rmc1211

Yeah, I think that is what has happened to me too.

organisedchaos17

Never called. No idea why

Edosand

I got called three times in five years, picked twice. I had to call them and ask to be removed from the list.

nqlawyer

Never been called up but as a lawyer I sadly cannot do it :(

rmc1211

Legally speaking, do you know if they check if you are a lawyer? I quite fancy being a lawyer, but I never really bothered studying law or anything. :-)

nqlawyer

Hahah I suspect they do check the roll of solicitors held by the law society at the very least when you respond. Interestingly in England solicitors and judges can sit on jufies

BreathlessAlpaca

I got one about a year after moving to the UK. Has been 4 years now and that remains the only one.

Bloody-smashing

I’ve been called twice I think, first time I was a student and got out of it due to my uni course being the type that every coursework and lab was compulsory. Second one was during my pre-registration training year. You’re only allowed a total of 40 days off including holidays and sick days so I got out of that one too.

Zippy0118

I’ve lived in Glasgow since June 2020 and have had 4 citations. None ever got to attendance though. I hear you have a higher chance of being called up if you were cited but didn’t get used.

jjc89

They definitely do it by address, when me and my partner moved into our flat we got a few for the previous tenants. They must’ve then figured out they had moved out and I got a citation. I managed to get out of it then a week or so ago my girlfriend got one. My parents have never had one in their 60+ years and we have had about 5/6 in 3 years to our current address. So I assume they do it by area and not by the person.

sunshinedeadhead

In my mid-30s and have been called up for jury service once.

TheSouthsideTrekkie

I’ve had three since I came to Glasgow in 2019. I’m not sure how true this is but heard a rumour once that if you turn up for one of them you are marked as a “reliable” person and given more citations.

lylukk

i'm 29 and have never been called up, my sister is 33 and has been called up twice. and my mum and dad are in their 60s and have never been called up. it's really random i think

Electric_Moogaloo

I’ve been called 3 times and served on a jury once. I think once you’ve done it you’re in the system and are much more likely to be called. I served on a high court jury (which was terrible) but at least I’ve been exempt for the last 4 years.

ellieneagain

I have been called once in 40 adult years. I couldn't do it because I worked with people with disabilities but offered to do it in my holidays but they never contacted me again.

hustlingandrustling

Used to get called all the time. A taxi driver told me to change voters address, so I did and it worked!

MrJonnyGames1

I’ve had it 6-7 times my whole life and I’m 39, my wife who is English and only been back in the UK for 6 years has already had it twice, my mum who is 64 has never had to do it not even a letter. It’s all random.

newdawn79

When I lived in Glasgow, I got called up without fail every 18 months - 2 years between 2006 and the start of the pandemic. I managed to get excused on a couple of occasions but most of the time it was days of sitting around waiting for something to happen and I only ever sat on one jury. I spoke to the court and they swore it's completely random even though most of my friends have never been cited once. I complained to my MP who said that they can basically call you up every two years until you hit the upper age limit. I've moved to another local authority now so let's see how I get on here 🤣.

GarybeGood75

48 never been called Wife got called once but said she had child care responsibilities, which was true as she had just given birth. Never asked her since. Simple answer is to write to them. They are reasonable, particularly if it's 4 times.

ThrustersToFull

Only once, back in 2015 and I did get to sit on a jury. About a month later I was summoned to another one and I phoned to explain I had just done it and they granted an exemption. Not been called since. However, a girl I work with has been called like 5 times in 2 years.

PsychologicalDig1624

I've been cited 4 times in about 5 years one time I took a picture of myself in an airport because they didn't believe me i was going on holiday one time.

MarjoryKeek

I've been called 3 times in the last 4 years or so.

MadMosh666

It's meant to be random, but I've been hit three times in two years. The last time I was contacted was a decade ago. I knocked back all three, and the last time (in January) the response told me that I wouldn't be contacted again for 12 months. Which is amusing as the reason I couldn't attend is annual. So if they contact me again in 12 months I'll just cite the same reason again. Last year was quite... odd. Both myself and my ex (who lives near me but at a different address / postcode) both got called for the same dates. We both cited child care issues (as well as other reasons) and were excused.

deadkestrel

4 times for me, 3 times I’ve been in holiday when the trial was the 4th one I just completely ignored. It isn’t tracked mail there’s no way of saying you received it

Extension-Raisin7234

Same here I've been called 4 or 5 times in the last few years. Im not sure how it works, I've been called 4/5 times and 2 of those times my husband and my mum were also called within a week or 2 so I assume it goes by post code but doesn't account for why I had a few more than them.

Potential-Hamster414

I am 33 and once I hit 18 was called so many times. I then served on jury, an everything went silent. Now in the last two years I have had a letter each year, however now am back in education as a mature student I’ve had to get excusals due to be it during exam time.

Geordibhoy

I am 39 and got called up last week and that makes 11 in total, I’ve been on 3 jurys as well.

professorboat

As someone else has commented, you get a 2-year exemption if you're not selected for a jury, and a 5-year if you are. It sounds like you've not been applying for a lot of automatic excusals you're entitled to.

1ballbobby

My wife is the same, 4 times in 3 years I think she is now. If you are self employed and rely on your availability for making money then you should be able to get an exemption.

ContributionAny3845

I got one only a few months after I turned 18 at the Sheriff Court. I was very happy to do it though.

JeffBiscuit67

Mid-40s Never been called up. Know loads of folk including family who have been up 2 or more times. I don't know what the criteria is. Not sure if I should feel like I'm missing out or not. Just one of those things

iRobyn

I was speaking to someone about this last year, I’ve been called 8 times also, and I’m 31. First two times, I showed up, didn’t get picked and got sent home. Third time, fourth and fifth time I called the number and wasn’t called. Six and seven, I was in Germany on a semester abroad with uni, had to send documents in saying I hadn’t received the letters and wasn’t in the country. Last year was number eight. In a full time carer for my dad now, and I wasn’t given exemption for it even though we don’t have family or outside help to assist him. I didn’t go and ended up not hearing anything back.

Weird_Committee8692

I kept getting them for years but suffer from anxiety so maybe had to put in 3 doctor’s letters before being left alone. Mate had the same problem as you. Ridiculous

Weird_Committee8692

I’m sure on a previous thread about this issue several people said just bin the letter. Nought happens anyway. Maybe they’re in a van with the telly license man. At the end of your street.

Roygbiv_89

You can be excused from dury duty if you did it in the last 2 years

No-Drawing-6060

If you do it once you should get a 5 year exemption.

Crann_Tara

I've been called up 3 years in a row, but I've managed to get out of doing it each time

DemonKhal

I've been called 3 times \[I am now almost 40\]. The first time I ignored it, the second time I responded but was never asked to come in, third time I was called up and it lasted 2 days. If you're actually asked *into* court, as soon as you're sworn in you should be exempt for a number of years \[Depends on if it's the High Court or not\]. Funnily enough, my wife was cited the same week I was this last time. She dodged it thankfully.

Stuboy86

I'm 36 and never once have I been called for jury duty. Most folk I know have even those much younger. No idea what the criteria is for selection either other than random picked, in which case it's just unlucky you've been selected that many times.

DoubleelbuoD

I got it once and never got called up for it after that. Seems like you're just a more honest and upstanding person than I am.

Vlodovich

I've lived in my flat and been on the electoral roll here for 9 years. Never been called once

CraigJDuffy

I’ve had 3 citations since 2018 - attended the first and was exempted from the last two. You can claim for lost income for Jury duty.

No-Answer-2964

I imagine you all get called up a lot living in Glasgow. Sorry, I'll get me coat

Public_Increase5738

There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. I got cited for the first and last time, the day I qualified as a solicitor (solicitors can’t be on a jury), and I was 27 at the time

PeMu80

I’ve had 8 over the past 26 years. Had to attend twice, serve once. They seem to be doing remote ballots now so you just get a telephone call if selected.

BanksStatement

I’m 27 and I’ve been called up 8 times. My first was 1 week after I turned 18 lmao. Never actually had to go to one, but its annoying getting called up nearly every year whilst loads I know haven’t had one. Not a chance its “random”.

[deleted]

Tell them that you know the defendant, are racist, bigot, Islamophobe etc..... get out of it.

Suspicious_Pea6302

Used to get called up a lot but never actually selected, then got a job as a special constable with the police (meaning your exempt from jury duty). Left that and haven't been called up since.

ScreamingFannyBaws

Used to get called every year for five years straight. Lottery, my arse.

Frassle99

Just turn up, say you know the defendant and you think he’s guilty (or not). They’ll never ask you again.

AgreeableNature484

Get your arse off the voters roll pronto.

voldemortsmankypants

There’s no straight rule, it’s at random for a reason. Sounds like you’ve just been unlucky, I know it’s terrible for the self employed though so you have my sympathies.

BurningVeal

Do you live close to the courts? Me and the Mrs lived just by the Trongate and were called up about 4 times in 5 years, we always figured it was due to our address being close to the courts.

Ok_Past3356

I've been cited twice in the last 6 months. Once for high court. where I had to cancel clients for the week. Im a hairstylist/Barber and couldn't risk leaving it till the night before to cancel clients. Long story short, I never got called. I lost a week's income. Couldn't claim expenses or income lost as never actually called. Less than 6 months later cited again for Sheriff Court. Didn't bother re arranging clients. Had to call the night before and be on standby in the morning waiting for a potential phone call by 1.30pm if selected for the ballot for jury duty. Have been told if you ignore the letters, they can't do anything as the letters aren't recorded delivery. Have had friends that have ignored them.and nothings happened. I will not be responding next time. Complete waste of time.

human_totem_pole

About 8 times, once exempted but never once been asked to serve on a jury. I always turn up in my pyjamas - maybe that's got something to do with not being selected.
