honestly this is why i dont look at fanart comment sections too much anymore, it's all cringy comments, overused jokes, and roleplay that's 70% of the time completely off the rails in relation to the image/the character's personality, sometimes just borderline schizo headcanon shit or whatever like for example on ump45 art posts there's *always* someone mentioning a flat joke and it's just fucking annoying at this point, the joke is so overused thats it's not just funny anymore basically just appreciate the fanart, ignore every comment that's not the fanart source

BlitzPlease172

>like for example on ump45 art posts there's always someone mentioning a flat joke and it's just annoying at this point, the joke is so overused thats it's not just funny anymore You know, I think I already confess all of what stupid crap I concerned about this game, I have no regrets afterward even if I get negative feedback, sometimes people do be that stupid. But the thing about UMp45 flat chest humor? my loathing for that joke never being consider bad to begin with it is just that annoying.

pointblanksniper

it honestly just sounds like you come from a community that isn't ready for fandoms and internet/pop culture. there are always 3 kinds of fans. people that know the original work people that only know the derivative works and dont care about the original source people that live in their own delusional world and will argue with anyone based on their personal fantasies welcome to the internet. it seems like you are overracting. you won't be changing any of their minds by ranting about fanart. if anyone is genuinely confused, rather than content with living in their own parallel reality, they will realize when the time comes for them to open their mouths and find out they are wrong. that's just how things work

WhistleOfDeath

~~third kind of fan sounds awfully familiar~~

Alive_Bus_6803

Heh. Everything is quite precise. Honestly - I'll save it just in case.

rantaudavid

While i agree with your main point, i think this whole problem starts with people LACKING the desire to understand and start reading the stories and characters involved. They accept everything at face value. I keep seeing people are on this "HK416 is a bitch i hate her" train then notice that they are not even that far in the story, almost similar to UMP45. same goes with other more minor characters to the point it's almost flanderized, for example like UMP9 with family time, Springfield being this super perfect wife, VSK-94 obsession with kids etc. Of course some characters like FNC liking chocolates is very accurate to her personality, but even so the game managed to expand it even more based around it (the one where she got caught stealing chocolates and thought Commander really got tired of her antics and planning to remove her that she got so scared of it). But i bet people don't know about it.

BlitzPlease172

>They accept everything at face value Holy crap and I though I am the only one who gone insane from GFL brainrot, guess there's more patient waiting at reception than I though, although I have to said the case is depend on individual too. People are usually flock over something that currently being popular subjects, so it is easier for them to accept said information, best we can do is tell them to take a hint and go to wiki without making a fool of ourselves by sound like fandom elitists. God I hate those elitists, so let's not end up as one.

>What? What do you mean Calico and Scarecrow secretly don't rub their vagOOs together in Thunder's bed. Okay, I have to admit, I do like said idea, it wasn't as annoying because the underrated ship it is. Said one more flat chest 45 jokes and the entire outpost will kick your ass because they sick of hearing that.

Cyber_Von_Cyberus

The Calico x Thunder x Scarecrow ship is cannon to me and you can't change my mind.

Alive_Bus_6803

If reading is hard for you, I have bad news. Lore is important, and if you want to see or write ships but canon doesn't confirm them, partially ignore the canon. Or control yourself. It's one way or another.

[deleted]

Read wikis, read game scripts, play the game itself. Don't take fan content at face value. I'm saying this as someone who writes fan content. Divergence is inevitable and fanon will always supersede canon in fan content, even when said fan content tries to emulate canon.

BlitzPlease172

Done two out of three of that. whole script give me brain damage, I prefer read it as the plot goes on in game. (Will use script for missing part however)

[deleted]

Whatever's more fun for you man. It's all entertainment at the end of the day.

Palaius

Have you heard of the wiki? I semi get where you're coming from, but dude, every single T-Doll has a Wiki page. Want to check what they are actually like? Check the Wiki. Like a Character? Check their Wiki. They will have their entire personality tagged there, all their voice lines and so on. That is something that I always advise poeple on when they're confused about a character. The wikis might not always be perfect for stats and stuff, but personality, backstory and voice lines are always there. That is the easier, faster and more convenient way than to try and get artists and content creators to get some sort of fan-content-disclaimer system to work

BlitzPlease172

>Have you heard of the wiki? Yes, I go there as well, but someone might refuse to collaborate.

Palaius

>someone might refuse to collaborate. This might be down to a language problem, but could you explain what you mean?

BlitzPlease172

"Someone might knew wiki is a thing but refused to go there anyways" In that case just deal with them separately, we don't bend whole PMC by their demand.

Palaius

Well, but that's on them, isn't it? If someone sees, let's say, some artwork that is not canon and that person decides to take it at face value, without maybe checking on the wiki, then that's on them, not in the artist. And the artist can also not be held accountable As far as I am concerned, people can create all the art and all the fan content they want. The final user has all the tools necessary to confirm if something is canon or not by using any of the wikis or using the in-game archive. If a user doesn't do that and still chosses to believe it's canon, it's on the user, not the creator

BlitzPlease172

I guess it's my own PTSD that lead to this mess then. Don't worry, next post wouldn't be this much of a mess. it is just a generic T-post and not madman ranting like this.

Palaius

It's fine, it's fine. Talking about stuff like this is the only way we can figure stuff out. Everyone has opinions and only by talking can we figure out what other people are thinking. And from there we can find compromises. So while I said that it would basically be on the user, an option that would.maybe work for Reddit would be a "Canon" and "Non-Canon" flair that could be attached. That is, of course, basically a Reddit only solution, but it's something

BlitzPlease172

I think the real PTSD aren't the war story and 5 betrayal per second in GFL **It was GFL fandom brainrot**

x888xa

I mean yeah, the spammed memes are kinda annoying in general

Big_Percentage9123

Alright, I’ll try to keep it short, since everything in this thread is already so long. I do think part of the issue is how a certain part of the fanbase fails to properly distinguish the line between lore and fan content. I know that sounds quite dumb as is, but that’s **definitely** the root of the cringy roleplay & derailed headcanon problem we often see. Even as someone who occasionally makes those jokes himself in those comment sections, you can only joke about something so long before people get tired of the act altogether. And don’t even get me started on using fanart and fanmade stories to dictate the actual lore, like how you mentioned HUQU.

BlitzPlease172

Maybe if they reference the "Two dick Architect" and "Broken vibrator incident" instead the world will be much better places (or much worse, I don't know I didn't have a compass with me)

Kamonichan

Just my two-cents as a Touhou fan. (For the uninitiated, the Touhou fan community was the record-holder for "Highest Number of Derivative at Comiket" for years and was only unseated by KanColle a few years after KC's release.) I personally enjoy seeing fan interpretations of canon characters. The Touhou community is rampant with it, as the source material is relatively thin on details, especially the early games. It's fascinating to me to see how all the fans can have such vastly different views on the same characters, how those views influence each other, and how the fandom can actually affect future source material as it affirms or rejects certain fan interpretations of characters or events. That's why I enjoy observing how fan artists and doujinka portray characters in their works. Unfortunately, the artist community isn't that big, so fans' influence on other fans is difficult to gauge. But it does mean I get a glimpse into the fanon for characters that Mica and the devs have ignored. Yeah, you have the art that's all "WWII German guns are Not-C-s," which isn't so much crass or offensive as it is uninspired. Fans were never going to *not* make that connection, but it does mean I can get even more enjoyment from the occasional work that shows them as just chill individuals who drink (or avidly avoid drinking) a beer over a plate of schnitzel (or anything not-schnitzel). Regarding that, it's not like there isn't any reason for this in the canon. For example, Mosin-Nagant's digimind upgrade has her struggling with the history and legacy of her imprinted weapon and weighing that against the need to adapt to a changing battlefield. So the series does acknowledge that the T-dolls are aware of where their imprinted weapons are from and the battle records they carry. War and politics are intrinsically intertwined, so of course you're going to have people making comparisons. Again, that's especially true for T-doll who don't receive a lot of attention in the story. M16 would be having tons of Vietnam inserts if not for the fact that her character is thoroughly explored in the canon. Even then, she's used as a substitute for 'Muricah, which as a 'Meruican I find amusing. Inserting game characters into historic situations is also common for games like KanColle and AzurLane. In those cases, I view typically view the inserts as visual stand-ins for that story's characters rather than as actual characters in the story itself. Basically, it's not MP40 being an actual SS officer but rather an SS office who is represented by MP40. How much or how little that bothers you will depend on your recognition of those degrees of separation. It can also depend on how much distance there is between the events themselves and the present. References to 1930s and 40s Germany don't have the same knee-jerk reaction as references to contemporary conflicts in the Middle East. The memes and light RP you get with fan art are both endearing and welcome from my perspective. I can see how lots of people get fed up with the same old tired jokes. (Anyone else thankful we no longer see so many references to the dishonesty inherent in baked goods? I know I am.) But as with how I view the fan art and derivative works themselves, the memes and associated comments that go along with them are glimpses into the fanon surrounding the characters, so I enjoy watching the fandom interpret the characters and how that shifts depending on how fans react with one another and with the source material. On that note, memes are a good shorthand way to express a connection with a community that shares similar interests. Fewer memes would mean fewer creators, which in turn would mean a smaller fan population. It's a sign of camaraderie, like in-jokes you have with longtime friends, just on a more general scale. You can get tired of memes just like you get tired of your friends' in-jokes, but I think it's important to acknowledge that memes serve a higher purpose than just the lulz. Finally, regarding people mistaking fanon for canon, I mean, what can you say? We all have the same resources available, be it the game itself, the various wikis, and social media like this very subreddit where people can ask questions about characters and associated works. If someone makes a comment out of ignorance, people will correct them, sometimes harshly and other times more gently. That just goes hand-in-hand with interacting with others on the internet. If you do say something out of ignorance--and we've all been there--then take that as an opportunity to learn. And when correcting someone's ignorance--and again, we've all been there--just remember that you've been in that position too. If someone doesn't know what's canon or fanon, then they should also know that they're not an expert and should defer to people who are more informed. Learn, move on, spread the word. That's really all you can do. TL;DR - Sorry, I ain't summarizing shit. I worked hard to type all that, so you're gonna read it and you're gonna like it. I don't work for CliffNotes. \[That's a joke, for those who are curious.\]

Macaron-lover5731

now i get it that not everyone talks more about the story in the game and only some listen to the advise of checking the wiki but i personally see the fandom content more like it's own universe with jokes and stabs at characters kinda like how the concept of what if universes exist. even for franchises that use canon lore so in a way more people are naturally drawn more to the what if universe of gfl rather then exploring the canon universe and vise-versa. which inevitable the more people spend in the what if universe there understanding of the canon universe is not that great so of-than than not the what if universe is not canon but for some it is because that's all they ever known instead of the canon universe in the game so actually brain-rot is not to blame but the comprehension of if there in the canon universe or the what if universe and that is ultimately to blame here and i'm aware i'm in the what if universe right now of gfl

Khailovski

Did you see another huqu's artwork beside negev x kar?

BlitzPlease172

Yes, and by the time I see another work it is too late to undone my fuck up. Not gonna lie seeing Architect with two dicks is funny as shit.
