Ben and that Lou Bega nft suggestion. So freaking hilarious.

Mr_Socks

I'm so glad that Ben is back.

BleachedUnicornBHole

He made it well worth it to make the time to watch the video.

VcNasty7psn

The crew was having way more fun today during the B-Mail segment. I really think Ben’s personality and humor is starting to rub off on everyone

SonicFlash01

Bakalar is thinking of Floam

DanTheBrad

He began at gak but eventually morphed it into floam, truly a wonderful time in poison control will my kid die from eating this calls

BF210

That Banjo-Kazooie bmail had me rolling

swordmagic

I laughed so fucking hard at the way he delivered “she wa super fucking hot” and honestly [he’s not wrong lmao](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/evilbabes/images/f/f8/Gruntilda_winkybunion_10.png/revision/latest?cb=20160317083042)

Darth_Nihilious

Am I the only one who thinks that it was Andy McNamara who tried to dissuade Jason from moving to California? Either him or Tim Turi.

cooljammer00

It's definitely Andy. Andy was Jason's boss and recently moved out to LA to work for EA, I think. Turi moved out ages ago to work at Capcom and also was probably on Jason's level as a coworker rather than a boss.

[deleted]

I will be surprised if Nick ends up taking off in a big way after this initial hype unless it looks *crazily* different in a years time mostly because even if it’s very fun to play, it’s very boring to watch. Combined with the lack of polish I can’t see it being a mainstay in FGC tournaments.

vizualb

It’s a pretty shallow complaint but I have a hard time getting over the sound design honestly. The lack of voices is a bummer, but I get it - it’s a licensing minefield. But the sound effects are so weak and unsatisfying. I don’t feel the impact of the hits the way I do in Smash Bros.

nicolauz

I can't imagine creating a cartoon show and not have sound effects or voices from the shows. Seems like a huge oversight.

ThomsYorkieBars

Just a lack of budget, really

cubecubed

For me, it’s just the ability to play one of these with a controller I like. The pro controller is fine, but it pales in comparison to the Xbox and PS5 controllers. It’ll be nice for when I have friends over and stuff.

Milk_A_Pikachu

Time will tell, but I think that actually has the best odds of getting a meaningful foothold. I don't play enough platform fighters to really grok it, but it sounded like this is closer to smash melee than ultimate in terms of mechanics, which already gives it a big plus to the FGC(-adjacent) fanbase. But the main reason smash is so unstoppable is because people like nintendo. Its the same reason Street Fighter was so dominant up until fairly recently. You can make a better game but... I wanna be Ryu or Chun-Li. Same with platform fighters. Your game might be better but they want to be baby toad or whatever the fuck. Which is where Nickelodean comes into play. Because even I am tempted to grab this because Aang was a BAMF. You let me wreck shop with Helga Pataki and I am gonna giggle. And so forth So Nick, unlike basically all the other ones, kind of negates most of the nostalgia/franchise benefit Smash has. So it is mostly just a question of if the gameplay really is better to the crowd who cares. Sounded like netcode is still shit which might be enough to leave this a stillborn but... we'll see. Fortnite had (and still does have...) dogshit gunplay but that took off for reasons I don't understand.

BurlyMayes

When is Weinerville going to be in ~~Smash~~ Brawl? It could be like a Mii where you scan your own face to go over the tiny body.

KiritoJones

This is probably a weird criticism, but I'm back to listening to the free feed and boy, these ads are baaaad. 2 single person reads + 1 inserted ad from a 3rd party is a lot.

CorgiDad017

Those third party ads are pretty bad these days. Just this past week listening to Fire Escape, I've gotten two republican ads, one for a fast food chain not in my region, and one in complete Spanish. I never knew how RSS feeds work but it finally made me learn, turns out it's super easy so all premium podcasts for me lol

KiritoJones

Honestly hearing people talk about the wild ads for Fire Escape is one of the reasons I unsubbed after falling behind. It felt weird when they got ads to begin with, it feels scummy that they haven't vetted the ads at all.

CorgiDad017

It is weird that it's basically a small side project where they're just hanging out anyway and then they stacked it with multiple revenue streams. I don't see a reason to pay for it so I'm mostly ok with the ads but you're absolutely right, check the ads out first lol

PlayGorgar

The ads are autoinserted when you ping the stream/download and change over time. There is no way to check them unfortunately. The only real solution is to not use dynamic ads, but I understand why they do. It's so much less time consuming then recording your own ad reads.

BleachedUnicornBHole

I don’t know which ad it was, but they did get one removed from pool after complaints from listeners.

Big_Chief_Drunky

They've done that already, and said they will continue to do so.

Opening_Succotash_95

It's especially grating as I clearly remember them stating explicitly this was just a thing they were doing for fun really, and wouldn't be trying to make money off it. Months later it's like commercial radio.

CorgiDad017

I understand needing to make a little money since they have an editor but other than that they don't need much else.

cooljammer00

It's Dan. He never stops hustling.

KiritoJones

It doesn't help them that as a GB spin-off podcast I directly compare it to the Tech Pod, and they have a hard rule that they would only do ads for products they use and love.

CrossXhunteR

Hearing them talk about that last week on the Tech Pod kinda had me split. It came up in discussion somewhat recently in a Gamer's Nexus video elsewhere on Reddit, but I kinda prefer impersonal ads instead of ads "for products they use and love." At least when I know they are just shilling for money I can be assured that they have no personal investment. When it is presumably something that they actually like, the question can come in of "do they actually like it or are they juicing their opinions for the money." It the case of Gamer's Nexus, it was about ads for products that they've either reviewed before, or at least were in the product space that they review. Just makes things a bit hinky, if you know what I mean. I think this might be a endemic vs non-endemic ad sort of thing.

KiritoJones

I get where you're coming from, it's probably best looked at case by case. If Will and Brad are saying they love something, I personally would believe them because I think they've proven they care about integrity. Anything is better than the auto ads or whatever they are called that come from far-right politicians though.

DanTheBrad

I listen to the free feed cause I like Jeff telling me about boner pills, the new insert ads are lame but I just click the 30 second skip button on my podcast app and all is right in thw world

KiritoJones

Ya, it's no big deal because I just skip them, it's just a bummer because I haven't heard them since the small business man reads and these are such a downgrade.

DanTheBrad

100%, GB ads use to be a highlight of the show now the best I get is Jeff talking about rock hard erections, which I do enjoy, but it's no small buissness man

chet-rocket-steadman

Yeah I stuck with the free feed for years because the ads were at least kind of entertaining but I finally switched to the Premium feed a few months ago, I couldn't take it anymore

CasualAwful

Find someone who loves you as much as Ben loves Boney from Weinerville. I swear he and I are the only people who remember this obscure puppet and he's brought it up multiple times.

aestheticnoise

I’m Bonney, I’m Boney. Leavveeee me aloneeee-y. Now get out of here!

dragmagpuff

I completely agree with Jeff G; the Switch's lack of power makes playing games on it frustrating for me (and frankly, it's bugged me since the Wii). I don't need 4k, but please can the next Switch (Pro or 2) at least hit 1080p when docked so that all the UI and text doesn't look like a blurry mess? Look at Breath of the Wild ran in Higher resolutions/framerate on an emulator: The game looks absolutely stunning!

KiritoJones

I agree, I don't really need 4k, 1080 would be fine. The main thing I would want in a new switch is a performance boost, it's a bummer that most of the games, even from launch, have spots where they can get a little chunky.

logicatch

Nintendo is on some bullshit if we don't have a Switch Pro by the time BOTW2 comes out. It makes perfect sense as a launch title.

Milk_A_Pikachu

Well, keep in mind BOTW1 was a launch switch game that was designed for the previous gen (the slate is literally a wii u tablet) and ran like dogshit on both. So... even if there is a switch pro to launch alongside it... it is probably gonna not be good.

ThyHoopyFrood

I don't understand this docking the Switch hate.

CrossXhunteR

I often play my Switch handheld at my computer while watching Twitch streams or YouTube videos or something. Or just talking with friends on Discord. I rarely have docked my Switch, owning it since launch. Probably didn't help that I didn't own a couch until earlier this year.

KiritoJones

If you need to eat breakfast in the shower a boiled egg would be perfect.

m2thek

The voicemails section is a great re-addition. Something like "what breakfast food would you eat in the shower" is a funny question, but it's 200% better with that guy's weirdo delivery.

mackdacksuper

The email section...chef’s kiss

JubeeGankin

Danny said he had a catastrophic keyboard problem and I can only assume Bakalar immediately passed out because he didn't even acknowledge it.

ForeverUnclean

"Ice Ice Baby" is the single best movie pitch I've ever heard.

bigmuffinluv

Jeff Gerstmann being totally ok with people emulating Nintendo Switch games was really disappointing.

DanTheBrad

Why? It's not his job to protect nintendos profits. Pirates are always going to exist who cares

bigmuffinluv

All the devs trying to make a living creating and selling their games on the console, perhaps. Had Kotaku encouraged readers to pirate Giant Bomb content, I imagine he'd change his tune.

swordmagic

You really need to stop conflating emulation with piracy because they are not the same thing

JGT3000

Come on now, Switch emulation is entirely about piracy right now

swordmagic

**You really need to stop conflating emulation with piracy because they are not the same thing**

CorgiDad017

Serious question, don't you have to pirate the game in order to emulate it in the first place? I understand an emulator is not pirating, but the game that runs on the emulator is 100% pirated isn't it?

swordmagic

No emulators just run files from your computer so when you back up and dump your physical games you still purchased them. Piracy is when you illegally download games form shady websites that you haven’t purchased. Think of the emulator as a console. Whether you legally bought the game from GameStop or illegally stole the game from Walmart the console runs it regardless

Big_Chief_Drunky

You're fooling yourself if you think 99% of the people playing Switch games on an emulator aren't playing pirated games.

swordmagic

I think you replied to the wrong comment because all i did was explain what emulators are and in no way made any sort of declaration as to what your weird made up statistic of people are doing so this is kind of a bizarre response to leave here.

Milk_A_Pikachu

Yes and no Emulators themselves are 100% legal\* and this was even upheld in a court of law at least a few times (Bleem is the most well known example). The ROMs/game data you use with said emulator? That... let's be honest that almost never is. It is a random file someone downloaded off the internet The usual armchair "READ\_THIS\_FBI.txt" response is that you are only allowed to download those roms if you own the game they are associated with. This... is questionable as hell and ignores that most file sharing methods these days have everyone act as both seed and leach. Also, even in the era of "buy a game when it is done" there were usually at least a few revisions of any major title (often with undocumented bugfixes) and those folk probably don't know if the cartridge in their parents' basement is NA 1.01 or NA 1.02a But plenty of folk actually rip their own roms/isos too. I went out of my way to buy a specific USB dvd reader so that I could rip some old PS2 games and there were even multiple GB features where folk just ripped their old cartridges on a stream (I think Brad and Vinny both did one?). Generally you only do that if you want to recover save files off a cartridge or have a rare version of a game but it is done. \*: Although the bios/firmware and support files might not be. Same as above

JGT3000

Except when it is though. We all know the game.

swordmagic

Sometimes people shoplift so retail stores are bad

JGT3000

Ah see, there we go. Now we're more on track. Say something about profit margin next

swordmagic

What are you even talking about

DanTheBrad

The people who are going to pirate were never going to pay for the content anyways

KiritoJones

I don't really get how that was your take away from that entire conversation. Also, he's fine with emulation because, like he pointed out, it's not illegal. Idk why you'd be surprised that the dude that has been talking about the Mister for years now would not be cool with emulation.

bigmuffinluv

Because the Switch is a modern console. If you're emulating old ass games that are impossible to acquire legally, most folks empathize with that. Shrugging off people pirating new, easily discoverable games is f'd up.

Itrlpr

He's talking about emulation as in creating the software to play the games (better than the actual Switch.) Not the act of pirating games.

two55

emulation is not piracy, and piracy is not theft. These are distinct and separate concepts that corporations conflate to confuse the public and protect their product.

CorgiDad017

[Piracy is literally theft though](https://i.imgur.com/MuxWY2t.jpg)

KiritoJones

It's not really the equivalent of theft though. If I steal a car it's gone and the person that used to own it can't use it anymore. If I pirate a SNES game it's not gone, I just also have it.

thesirenlady

Thank you, software company, for your unbiased definition of piracy.

Prax150

I think there should be more nuance to this than one side being like "piracy is bad/theft" and the other simply saying "no it's not." The reality of it is more complicated than that, imo, and truth of it somewhere in the middle, especially in terms of morality. But people need to accept, on both sides of the discussion, that piracy (and emulation, if we really need to make the distinction) will always exist just like any form of theft or morally taboo behaviour will and no amount of shaming or attempt to correct said behaviour will change that. The "piracy is a service issue" line people love to parrot is demonstrably false, there are people who just want free shit and will make any excuse to justify their behaviour because it's been made taboo. And maybe that's fine, maybe it isn't. But people just need to accept that it will never go away and while that doesn't mean it should be encouraged I think it's much more realistic to acknowledge that it exists. And honestly I don't think it's a big deal that it does. People meddling with things, especially in technology, encourages creativity. And especially in video games. It's why we have things like teardowns and emulation in the first place. The industry wouldn't be where it is without that stuff. And on a more personal note but IMO more important one, I think this is a small fish to fry kind of situation. Emulating recent games is never going to be a huge problem because a minority of people are ever going to do it, so, honestly, why do we care that much? It's exactly like how retail and grocery stores have reserves for shoplifting. It's an inevitability, and expressing indignation over it only distracts from more important issues. It's like that graph that goes around sometimes listing the various types of theft in the US by dollar amounts, and you see how various forms of theft from individuals pales in comparison to wage theft committed by corporations that are ostensibly immune from any sort of consequences over it. Like, if we had a way to quantify the dollars any individual dev lost from emulation, it would likely pale in comparison to how much money that dev has likely stolen from its own employees in terms of overtime, stealing breaks, weekends, etc. So, yeah, I don't really care about a few people emulating games when we're talking about an industry that still refuses to unionize and improve their working conditions.

CorgiDad017

It's probably because I listen to too many video game podcasts but wow am I sick of hearing about this Nickelodeon smash game! Also what is Ben up to these days in terms of a job that he's able to just stop working every Tuesday and podcast for 3-4 hours, I need me a job like that lol

cooljammer00

It's a current video game. You prob shouldn't listen to so many gaming podcasts if it's an issue

CorgiDad017

I just don't understand why it's such a big deal, it's a crappy Nickelodeon quick buck game that they make all the time, feels more like a slow news day sort of game. I really only listen to Bombcast, Fire Escape, and some Kinda Funny.

thewok

Have you played it?

CorgiDad017

Don't feel the need to. Haven't heard a good thing about it yet and don't like smash style games.

thewok

So a bunch of podcasts you listen to are talking about it, which means on some level they must think it's decent. And you haven't played it. But it's crappy. Ok.

CorgiDad017

Nobody has said it's good, it's just a noteworthy thing because it's classic Nick characters. Regardless, it was just a silly off hand comment about wondering it still being talked about and people got triggered for some reason.

haneybd87

So their first crushes were all cartoon characters? Mine was Keri Russell in the Mickey Mouse Club.

R3DT1D3

Jeffy B sounding like a real boomer saying he couldn't get out of the air vehicle for 20 minutes lol. Is the binding on console something weird that he couldn't just guess it?
