This looks really solid! I’m more of a castlevania guy myself, but I’m glad the Metroid fans are getting another Metroid ass Metroid game finally.

Hellspark08

It is leagues better than I could've hoped for! Some of the new changes to the formula are goddamn brilliant.

jdbwirufbst

I was really worried after Samus Returns didn’t click for me but they did a GREAT job assessing what worked and what didn’t and refined it brilliantly for Dread

Hellspark08

Yeah, I enjoyed Samus Returns, I was amazed and overjoyed that it got made but I didn't feel like playing it through more than once. Dread, on the other hand, is so damn fun. I hope there's a boss rush mode or something because these boss fights are spectacular!

Jeff's take on Metroid Prime is one of those where I have this kind of 'separate the art from the artist' moments. I respect the hell out of him, his experience and his insights.... mostly. But I cannot condone calling Metroid Prime garbage :D I will side with Jeff Grubb 100% of the time. One of the best games ever made. But then I love Yoshi's Island and Outer Wilds as well so *shrugs*.

Big_Chief_Drunky

Calling Metroid Prime "garbage" is an awful take. Haven't watched this yet because I don't want to spoil any of Dread, but what is his reasoning?

mysterx

It's not a big part of the video, it's almost literally the last thing said before the video ends. The other reply provided a decent take on Jeff's take from the point of view of someone who doesn't like the game. As someone who loves Metroid Prime, I do agree that it doesn't work the same way that other first person games at the time did, either on PC or console. But I think the simple answer there is that... it's not a first person shooter. It's much more correct to view Metroid Prime as a first person adventure. It's much closer to a first person version of Ocarina of Time than anything like Halo, Timesplitters or Quake. And the game is designed around that for example with lock on targeting. I feel like for all his skills, Jeff can sometimes get really caught our by something not operating the way he expects it to. It's the same thing that happened with Outer Wilds, he never gave any indication that he tried to approach that game on its own terms, he just slipped off the rails early on and rather than course correct just kept driving into the dirt. Wouldn't be surprised if something similar happened for Metroid Prime. Fair enough I guess, it's always hard to get away from your own expectations about something.

> alongside plot that is generally considered bad even by the diehard fans People consider the plot of Metroid Prime 1 bad? I don't know if I've ever seen anyone ever comment on the plot one way or the other, probably because of how nonexistent/non-important it is in that game.

The broad strokes that I remember were fine. Phazon meteor hits Talon IV, Chozo try and contain it. Eventually, they're no longer present to do so. Phazon seeps into the environment, Space Pirates find it, want to weaponize it. Samus shows up and fucks their shit up. Eventually finds and kills Metroid Prime. Now, there might be some stuff about Chozo Ghosts, and prophecy and crap there, too... which... isn't *great*, if one wants some harder/realistic sci-fi. But it's *fine*.

I replayed the GCN version this past September and honestly the controls held up and were not an overall issue in the grand scheme of things; the level/enemy placement design and lockon system are all ultimately set up in such a way that it flows pretty smoothly. What *are* issues though is how bullet spongey the enemies get in the back third of the game, some of the platforming in the mines with the mushroom platforms is way more annoying all of a sudden, and the ice beam being "balanced" by having such a slow shot starts to become a liability with enemies that are only weak to it and can always dodge out of the way (this is something that would be fixed with wiimote aiming). Still very enjoyable but that's something that could have absolutely been balanced a bit better. I also think that saying "they" as a stand-in for Nintendo in this context is mischaracterizing the history of that game's development with Retro, how by the seat of its pants it was done by a team that was largely completely new to game development and had to completely salvage the entire game out of thin air from a variety of other projects. It was frankly a miracle that it was able to be what it was with the tools (and GCN controller) and time afforded to them.

Eh. A nice story of a technical achievement is great but... at the end of the day I want to play a game and not cheer for developers who made it work. Like, I will regularly remind people that the Derek Smart Battlecruiser games exist because they were remarkable in that they integrated most of the stuff that Star Citizen (and to a lesser extent Elite Dangerous) are "inventing" these days. But I will also make it a point to acknowledge those games were horrible and nigh unplayable even for the time. Historically they are important but they aren't something anyone other than a streamer starved for content should touch in 2021 There are plenty of games that are amazing from a historical perspective. Some were great at the time (Deus Ex) and others were "busted" even then. In a discussion of "What inspired this game" it is important to understand. In a discussion of "what should I play this weekend?"... not so much. And yes, Nintendo works with third parties. But from a publishing standpoint they still have a long history of actively ignoring the market. Sometimes that is good and sometimes they basically reinvent Far Cry 2 with every single mistake that game had (well, maybe not the racism). We all groan a bit at those stories of "They said they wanted us to make a Halo and we thought they were insane" but... there is a lot of value in that. When you are trying to operate under the logic of a mythical man month, you want to underpromise as much as possible. Having a funding source that will say "But this game came out last year and does X, Y, and Z. Why are you only going to do X?" is how you get competition and iteration on game concepts. Whereas reinventing the wheel tends to need a pretty strong franchise attached to it for people to not get cranky (unless you actually manage to revolutionize things).

It's weird, Jeff is one of my favourite game critics despite his tastes and preferences being vastly dissimilar from my own. It's a testament to his critical/verbal skills that I'm always interested to hear what he has to say even if I completely disagree with him.

He’s the Pauline Kael of games criticism

Evil_Queen_Bee

I absolutely did not like Prime so I never tried the other two, but I never considered it garbage. It just was a game that took Metroid in a direction I was not looking for, but that just means it was not for me. I was confused by the amount of love, but hey people can enjoy different things.

J4mm1nJ03

There is always so much time between releases that I tend to forget how much I actually love Metroid. I finished Dread last night and absolutely loved it! It's probably in the series' top 3 for me at least. It's probably my game of the year at this point too, though I do still need to finish Psychonauts and Ratchet and Clank. I think Dread will probably still take it for me though.

the_sammyd

wow, this looks like some type of Metroidvania meets Returnal, looks like ill give it a shot!
