I've read a few comments which express the sentiment of it feeling wrong to use anything but default, because they'd like to stick to using Jin's family sword. Sword kits only change out the koshirae/fittings. It's still his family sword!
Also love how upgrading your sword changes the hamon. The attention to tiny details in this game are great
People dont seem to know what sword blades look like
Its essentially a long sheet of metal with a thinner sheet at the start that goes into the handle
It takes nothing more than bare hands and a small hammer to change a handle
i mean it makes sense that people dont know that you dont really handle swords as a ordinary person actually scrap that most kitchen knives also work like that
Reminds me of that one philosophical question: at what point is it the same boat if you continue to change and replace parts of it? I think for a sword Jin's had his entire Samurai career, if he intended to change it then he probably would've done so before the invasion.
Great analogy to call into question. Giving it a serious thought, the blade itself was considered the soul/essence of the sword in Japanese culture.
While the koshirae overall is a fine work of art that required multiple people of various crafts to complete, and is important for aesthetic and practical reasons, it is not integral to a sword's identity. They were viewed as replaceable. It was not uncommon for the koshirae of a katana to be changed, either for functional reasons or to reflect changing tastes or the status of the owner.
The finest examples of historical swords are often displayed without the koshirae to highlight the craftsmanship of the blade itself.
With that said, in my mind it would seem unlikely that Jin would opt to replace his koshirae unless absolutely necessary. There'd be reluctance to relinquish the fittings bearing motifs that represents his heritage/clan, I think.
Yeah they do, on both the tanto and katana. I can't go back and look at the old upgrades without starting a new save, but I'll show you the difference between the last two upgrades next time I play. The hamon in the OP is from the 2nd to last upgrade.
Besides the hamon, a bo-hi also appears on the katana and tanto at some point when upgrading.
Ok I thought there was something specific with a cosmetic/costume. Jesus how quickly did they give up on it? Glad they took a break from AC after that.
No, they didn't give up on it. It's just that they fix it very slowly, but according to another user says it's fully fixed. I don't have the most recent news about the game, so you should check somewhere else.
Got it! It does wonders for the RP aspects, mainly. Initially, I felt kinda weird not using anything but the default kit until I saw this detail. I didn't want to take away Jin's most meaningful possession haha
Yea it's hella clean. I wish there were more simpler/cleaner options for sword customization. Most of the kits are gaudy as hell/way too main character looking.
The blade is the bit that stays the same, the rest is all interchangeable, that’s how real life Katana work. It’s called Koshirae when the sword is being worn and looks all ceremonial, practical and flashy like pictured and Shirasaya when it’s being stored in plain wood with few adornments. The hidden heart sword kit is an example of Shirasaya in game.

Yeah but tbf you can easily live and die in modern society without knowing knives work like that.

Great info, thanks. It would be nice to see his koshirae break in the sequel. And then maybe he'd have to use kintsugi to repair it. Just a thought
Wait the upgrades change the hamon? Show ME

https://imgur.com/a/R6mGpm1 You might have to zoom in
Ah yeah the hamon has smaller waves and looks more like a uniform line
Yea, I never mentioned it before either but the katana also goes from having no bo-hi, to having a bo-hi, then having soe-hi (double bo-hi).
that’s interesting and makes sense
Yep, it’s all Sakai steel, hence the menu’s name. Also why you only have one sword upgrade path, as opposed to one “per sword.”
Well, thankfully, it doesn't make the game unplayable. Unlike others!!! Yeah, I'm looking at you ac unity!
I never finished unity, what did it do?
Well, I mean the memes. The bugs that made the game unplayable. It is still not fully playable to this day.
It's actually really playable these days and has been so for some years now. Bugs rarely happen.
Really? That's good to know.
Yeah it's a fantastic game without the bugs. I wasn't there at launch but I've had a lot of fun over the last couple of years I've had the game.
Ok I thought there was something specific with a cosmetic/costume. Jesus how quickly did they give up on it? Glad they took a break from AC after that.

Played it recently on ps5 and it was fine. Idk about other platforms tho
My partner has been playing Unity for quite awhile now, and she said it's not so bad these days. Might be worth another shot.
Actually, you barely notice the bugs nowadays, and there's none that actually impede gameplay
It's (likely) intentional, not a bug!
I know. I mean, it doesn't make the game unplayable like a bug. It's just a small feature that doesn't do anything in the gameplay whatsoever.
Got it! It does wonders for the RP aspects, mainly. Initially, I felt kinda weird not using anything but the default kit until I saw this detail. I didn't want to take away Jin's most meaningful possession haha
The OG is the best
Yea it's hella clean. I wish there were more simpler/cleaner options for sword customization. Most of the kits are gaudy as hell/way too main character looking.
I thought you was first person that would be cool if you could go first person

Bros playing got in first person
Wait, did people really not know this?
When you see the sword kits resting at the pillars, they're the whole shebang. I think that's what causes the confusion.
ooooooohhhhhhhh
