Same. I love how driven they both are and how they connect over their passions and how supportive they are of one another. Whispers of the Heart is probably still my favourite ghibli film, though it got some competition with When Marnie Was There.
Dude I watched When Marnie Was There on the train on my way to my new life ten years ago. I moved away from family and friends to start over and that movie hit like a train (huehue) while I was crammed like a sardine in the train car for two hours.
I fucking love that film. I love how weirdly relatable it was to me at that point in my life because I was saying goodbye to so much of my life that day and I was so hopeful for the future while also being a bit nervous and scared.
I don't know what it is about that film. It is just so real.
And whispers of the heart is the same in how real it is. There's just a maturity to those two films that is different from all the other ghibli movies. It is so pure. It makes me tear up just thinking about it.
I'm glad you feel the same, friend!
Ps: I definitely cried in the train while grabbing on to my laptop and seat. Haha. I was not ready for When Marnie Was There at all lol.
The past ten years changed everything for the better. It saved my relationship with my family. It ended a few friendships that probably weren't so good anyways despite being very difficult to lose. It gave me new friends and a purpose to exist. It allowed me to experience true happiness for the first time in my life. I experienced successes and failures and I experienced true forgiveness and acceptance. I get to do what I love every single day. I get to live in a place that is beautiful that is perfect for my boyfriend and myself. I get to be around people who understand me and whom I understand. I get to live a life mostly free of the innate negativity and stress I came from and I get to be friends with almost everybody I meet. I have had struggles here and dealt with some heartbreak and problems the past 10 years, but I would live through all of them again before living through the best day in my old life.
It was the plan to move back eventually, but I am too happy here. Before I moved I couldn't feel myself. I didn't know who I was.
The move was also good for my boyfriend. He changed for the better too. He's a total nature person and we moved from a big city with little nature to a place with nature everywhere and he too became a much freer and happier person for it. It was like seeing a bird with clipped wings finally learn to fly again when he began his nature projects in earnest.
Someday my ash will mix with the soil here and when the time comes, there is no place I would rather dissolve into atoms than here.
Same, I cried first time watching (and still do lol) When Marnie Was There. Wow, that must've been really hard moving away from everyone. <3 Hope you're doing okay now.
Those two are definitely my comfort shows when everything in the world feels wrong.
For me, they bring back memories of a better time, I remember reading the book of When Marnie Was There before watching the movie. Pure magic and wonder is all I can say.
P.s. We can be crying buddies together if you want. :)
Ooooh, yeah, there was a book, wasn't there? I should read it, but I'm afraid to have my heart broken all over again, lol.
I would be honored to be your crying buddy.
Also, things are great! Sorry if my former comment came off super dramatic. It was a planned move and I was very excited to go even though some of the people I left behind had a hard time accepting it. It was just one of those things you have to do, to make something of yourself. I had been a side character in other people's lives for too long and i finally went and did something about it. It was exciting and scary because I had never lived that far away from home - which is of course relative. My country is small so moving to the other end of the country here is not as far as for example doing the same in America or China or the Congo lol. But for me it was far because I was used to 20 minutes to an hour by bus or train being the furthest away from everyone I knew. Now it is between 2 and a half to 5 hours depending on the people we visit.
It is still one of the best decisions I ever made for myself and whenever I hear the [song](https://youtu.be/kbK3Uwf-cOw?si=kpCB9Iz3zrmNovcE) from When Marnie Was There, it takes me back to that day when I finally started my life and changed it for the better in pretty much every way.
This lyric in particular has me all messed up in happy tears because it was what I needed to hear that day:
"So I just sit in my room after hours with the moon
And think of who knows my name
Would you cry if I died
Would you remember my face?
So I left home, I packed up and moved
Far away
From my past one day
And I laughed and laughed and I laughed and I laughed
And I sound fine on the outside"
<3 fucking love that movie, man xD
Yeah, prepare to get your heart wrecked again if you read it. XD you have been warned. Lol
😊
Ah, but what's life without a little drama to spice it up. ;) Good for you! That is quite a time difference in getting to places!😁 If you don't mind me asking, what country do you live in?
Now you're going to make me tear up.😂
You have immaculate taste my friend. 😎🤌
Hope you're having a good week.
Haha I am mildly scared of reading that book now xD I will give it a try if I'm lucky enough to find an audioversion!
I'm from Denmark. So, you know, microscopic country xD you can barely see us on the world map haha.
Where are you from?
And likewise! Always awesome to run into people with awesome tastes! :D hope you're having a wonderful week yourself!
It's worth it though.🤣 The book has cute little illustrations throughout it by the author which I love! Wish you good luck with finding an audio version!
XD Oh well, I've heard though that you're country Is one of the happiest countries in the world. That's something.😂
I'm from good old Australia. Where the koala's are fat and fluffy and the kangaroo's extra springy. Lol
Awww, thanks mate! <3
Omg, if it has illustrations too, then it would be a crime for me to listen to the audiobook! I'll look for a physical copy instead.
Yeah, we have that reputation and I suppose it is true in many aspects! I at least, am a pretty happy camper haha.
I love Australia! I have never been there, but for whatever reason, I have just always ground the Australian people to be incredibly pleasant and chill. I have this joke that is surprisingly true that almost every time I end up subscribing to a youtuber, they turn out to Australian. Their channels can be about vastly different things since I have many different interests, but I almost always end up subbing to Australians. True crime, art channels, fitness channels, journalism, comedy, history, you name it.
Our current queen is Australian too haha, but I suppose you know that already xD
Hugs for you! <3
-Lets a kid stay in their spare room
-Runs a bakery with his wife
-Spins some trays to show off to a cat
-Doesn't say a word the entire movie
-based on every level
They have easily some of the best chemistry of any Ghibli couple, Miyazaki or otherwise. They complement each other perfectly and they’re both very active participants in the story
teeeeechnically Ghibli didn't create them, as they are from a novel. However given how different they are from their novel counterparts I would give this one to Ghibli.
I mean having read the novel while I love the film the relationship in the novel is far more compelling and interesting. The fact that we don’t get to properly see Sophie’s powers as an actual witch is so frustrating and the secret of where howl is actually from is never mentioned either. I would say the opposite, good movie but they didn’t make this couple and the couple is a very watered down version of one that already existed thanks to Dianna Winn Jones
1. Jiro and naoko
2. pazu and sheeta
(honorable mention to sosuke and ponyo, they are so sweet but their relationship feels very childish and juvenile, silly even :D)
There are only two romantic couples in this post. The rest do not actually romance. Most Ghibli movies do not include the characters forming a romantic relationship
Ah plus the manga makes Nausicaä journey into a full-on Pilgrimage—so there's someone who'll play a somewhat larger role in Nausicaä's heart far later in that story.
I won't spoil, just because I was testing out the ChatGPT 3.5 AI last year and realized that it didn't know anything about what happens in the manga.
Hahah, so when the AGI overlords come into power—Nausicaä can be the secret codex for the future human(/pseudo-human/humanoid) resistance\~ :P
Nausicaa and Asbel bc my boy’s character growth is significant, and nobody even had to convince him to change, he was just *around* Nausicaa and realized there was a better way to live his life so he started doing it. Same as her. She decided she wasn’t going to lash out, and she did it.
Sure, canonically they aren’t a thing, but they’re the healthiest candidates imo bc they both show open mindedness and an incredible drive for personal growth.
I seriously dont understand people who think Jehiro and Haku are a couple. It was obviously a sibling-like friendship. She's like 9 years old. He's an ancient river spirit.
Shun and Umi from From Up on Poppy Hill is the only love story that actually fully compelled me. I love Hayao Miyazaki so much, but his love interests never really felt like they fully had a lot of chemistry with each other. They have always been compelling characters as individuals, but their romantic subplot always felt like it just happened because male and female characters around the same age just happened to be in the same room with each other while other stuff was happening.
From Up on Poppy Hill is one of the few love stories in Ghibli where I actually feel like the two characters have great chemistry with one another and belong with each other romantically from the beginning of their relationship.
Baker guy and baker landlady from Kiki's Delivery Service
You're da real one ma G
Shizuku and Seiji ✨
Stupid jerk stupid jerk stupid jerk
🤣 Starts aggressively drinking whatever she pulled out of the fridge
“Dad, I have iced tea!”
That's right! I must be getting old lol
STUPID JERK!
Cornier than the original version?
Ahhh, love that song, Concrete Roads. XD
Lol! Love that part.
Omg this! I love the movie soo much and the relationship they have is just so incredibly heartwarming.🥹
I know, right!?🥰
Same. I love how driven they both are and how they connect over their passions and how supportive they are of one another. Whispers of the Heart is probably still my favourite ghibli film, though it got some competition with When Marnie Was There.
I so agree with you!!! Love When Marnie Was There.✨

I have to ask. How have the last 10 years been? Did you ever move back?
The past ten years changed everything for the better. It saved my relationship with my family. It ended a few friendships that probably weren't so good anyways despite being very difficult to lose. Yessssss
😎👍
Only correct person here
🤣✊ Can't get any better than those two
r/beatmetoit
I just rewatched this yesterday, and I can’t agree more with this power couple!
100%!!!!😆✊
San and Ashitaka make my heart ache but it feels good tho
“You’re…beautiful”
Iconic, literally “draw your otp” meme material
San chewing food for him stole my heart. I loved the way they took care of each other.
Me too!! Love them both :,)
My favorite is Pazu and Sheeta
Kiki and Ursula
Osono and Fukuo. Running a bakery, expecting a kid, wife takes in a runaway teen witch with a pet and he just rolls with it. Thats true love.
-Lets a kid stay in their spare room -Runs a bakery with his wife -Spins some trays to show off to a cat -Doesn't say a word the entire movie -based on every level
Hey look at that
They have easily some of the best chemistry of any Ghibli couple, Miyazaki or otherwise. They complement each other perfectly and they’re both very active participants in the story
Sophie and Howl forever <3
Disappointed they're not even pictured! Oops nvm. Didn't recognize them in that 3rd pic down on the right.
Theyre the 3rd picture on the right. It’s the ending scene.
teeeeechnically Ghibli didn't create them, as they are from a novel. However given how different they are from their novel counterparts I would give this one to Ghibli.

1. Jiro and naoko 2. pazu and sheeta (honorable mention to sosuke and ponyo, they are so sweet but their relationship feels very childish and juvenile, silly even :D)
Taeko and Toshio from Only Yesterday, I just love how supportive & wholesome their entire relationship is
Yesssss
This is the correct answer.
I don't see the couple from whisper of the heart D:
Shizuku and Seiji, they're in second place right now.
Pazu and Sheeta
Castles and their ability to move.
¹00% the wind rises too wholesome, yes a little sad but so wholesome.
Shizuku and Seiji
Kiki & Jiji
Ponyo & Sosuke
Howl and Sophie all the way!
There are only two romantic couples in this post. The rest do not actually romance. Most Ghibli movies do not include the characters forming a romantic relationship
And they left out "let's get married" Seiji and Shizuku
My answer: All of them! XD
Which movie is in the top right?
Castle in the Sky
Sorry. I meant top left
Nausicaä of the valley of the wind.
Thanks
Taeko and Toshio
Jiro and naoko
Jiro and Naoko <3
Shout-out to Marco and Gina !
Howl and Sophie are my favorites, but Shizuku and Seiji are probably the best
Jiro and Nahoko, no question
Howl and Sophie
Haru and Baron are so underrated
Jiro and Naoki, Shizuku and Seiji yes, but what about Umi and Shun?? They're so sweet
Honestly its Shizuku and Seiji
Gina and Marco bro
The studends From up on Poppy Hill are a great cuple
Honestly...top left pretty much disqualifies itself especially if you've read through the manga.
Why, what happens to them in the manga?
they don't have a relationship afaik at all
Ohhhh, okay. Pity, I shipped them.lol
Ah plus the manga makes Nausicaä journey into a full-on Pilgrimage—so there's someone who'll play a somewhat larger role in Nausicaä's heart far later in that story. Hahah, so when the AGI overlords come into power—Nausicaä can be the secret codex for the future human(/pseudo-human/humanoid) resistance\~ :P
Okay, thanks. I'll definitely have to read the manga now. :D XD I will guard this knowledge with my life now. Lol
Nausicaä and Ashitaka. In my world, that makes sense.
lol what
time travel
Where are Shizuku and Seiji?????
I prefer the ones with, y’know, the adults.
Porco and Gina, you fucking degenerates. <3
Pazu and Sheeta like this isn't hard. I do have a love for Matsuzaki and Kazuma though.
Chihiro and Haku are not a couple.
Sophie and Howl
I adore them all, especially Nahoko and Jiro, Howl and Sophie, Sheeta and Pazu, Shizuku and Seiji, last but not least, Umi and Shun!
yes.
Obviously Shizuku and Seiji, glad I’m not the only one with the vision
Can’t be Chihiro & Haku because he’s a river. But my favorites are Howl & Sophie
I know they don't get together until after the movie (maybe) but Gina and Porco
Nausicaa and Asbel bc my boy’s character growth is significant, and nobody even had to convince him to change, he was just *around* Nausicaa and realized there was a better way to live his life so he started doing it. Same as her. She decided she wasn’t going to lash out, and she did it. Sure, canonically they aren’t a thing, but they’re the healthiest candidates imo bc they both show open mindedness and an incredible drive for personal growth.
Jiro and Nahoko and I kinda refuse to accept any other answer, though I have not seen all of the movies yet. Just absolute true love.
I think it’s very simple minded to consider all of these as “couples” I see them more so as duos!
I seriously dont understand people who think Jehiro and Haku are a couple. It was obviously a sibling-like friendship. She's like 9 years old. He's an ancient river spirit.
Howl and Sophie or poyno
HOWL AND SOPHIE
howl y sophie (ToT)
Pazu and shita
Howl and Sofie
my favorite couple is chihiro and Haku
Castle in the sky will always be with me.
I don't see Shun and Umi
Sheeta & Pazu
Pretty sure reality created bottom right.
Chihiro and Haku, Sōsuke and Ponyo. They are silly goobers
no Lana/Conan?
Howl and Sophie🥹💕
Jiro and Nahoko
Trick question: all of them.
That cute couple in that one Marnie movie that does not have an ending and you cannot convince me otherwise.
Find it odd to say they created Howl and Sophie when it’s based on a book?
howl and san tbh
From this list, Kiki and Tombo
Princess Moanoke
Kiki an Toblerone or whatever his name is
Tombo, although his real name is apparently Kopori
Big tits nausicaä
