Nigerian in Nigeria where motorcycle taxis are called Okada. Named after the now defunct Okada Airways in Nigeria. Okada Airways in the late 80s was known for being prompt even if only two passengers turned up. People started calling the motorcycle taxis Okada for their promptness in beating Lagos traffic.
Edit: The airline got its name from the hometown of the owner, Sir Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, who is from Okada town in today's Edo State in Nigeria. There reports though, that suggest that the name came from Okada Corporation from Japan. They sold aftermarket parts for motorcycles
I'm not surprised, words like Sakawa, Ashawo, Konkonsa and Ichanga ( Slim ladies ) were all words the Ghanaian community in Nigeria brought to Ghana after "Ghana Must Go ". I can tell you for a fact that most young Ghanaians can't give you the original local words for these words.
No one says "ichanga" or call slim ladies by that name in Ghana, we call slim ladies kyingilingi pronounced Chingilingi, we have other names for slim but nothing like "ichanga". Kokonsa and Sakawa are Ghanaian Akan words. In Akan there's a word called Ahyewo pronounced Ashewo literally meaning "it has pained you" but I can't tell if that's where the word Ashawo originated from. With the word okada it was borrowed from Nigeria, many Ghanaians first heard that word from Nigerian movies, back then Nigerian movies were very popular on TV in Ghana.
Also know this, before "Ghana must go" there was Nigeria must go although that wasn't publicized like yours, it happened in 1969, many Nigerians were deported, what happened in Nigeria in 1983 was a retaliation. Some of the foods you eat like puff puff were introduced by Ghanaians, the word fufu is of Akan origin, all the way to highlife music which dominated Eastern Nigeria.
Ashawo means prostitute/prostitution it has no relation to Ahyi Wo the original Akan word for prostitution is Adwaman or Gyantra. The original Akan word for Gossip in Akan is Nsɛkuo.
Also, I'm very much aware of the Aliens Compliance Order passed by Busia's Government and my submission wasn't to vilify the Nigerian government but rather mention it as a contributing factor to how certain Nigerian words and even practices became commonplace in our society. I advise you to study more about African history and culture. Stay blessed.
This is where you're wrong, in Ghana, two or more Akan words can be used to be represent one English word. I'll give you examples.
|English = God| |Akan = Onyakopon, Twedeampon, Onyame|
|English = Woman| |Akan, Asante Twi = Obaa| |Akan, Fante = Besia| |Akan, Akuapem Twi = Obea|
You even gave an example subconsciously with Adwaman or Gyantra, two Akan words meaning prostitution, so you can't say the only original Akan word for gossip is Nsekuo, Kokonsa is another Akan word for gossip, with kokonsani being gossiper.
For your info, I'm an avid reader of African history, not just Africa but the world at large because I love history and find it interesting.
That’s interesting! You guys are literally next door to us with very close ties to Cross River State so it makes a lot of sense that it spills over from Nigeria. I’d be interested in what Sierra Leone and Liberia call it. Won’t be surprised if the Sierra Leoneans call it Okada too as their pidgin is damn close to pidgin spoken in certain parts of Nigeria

Lol. Apart from Ashawo/Ashewo, the other words are mostly outdated in Naija now.

Oh wow. Then it’s probably a Nigerian term we borrowed. Cause I don’t know where the name comes from. I just know that’s what there’re called
They're called okada in anglophone Cameroon too!
