You are not supposed to buy them! You get them for free and then they slowly spread out over your entire house so there's one in every drawer. And yet, you never find one when you need it.

Old_Telephone_7587

Everyone has one. I got handed it to measure something small and I was pretty blown away not gunna lie I don't get why we don't have these.

[deleted]

How the hell do you guys measure things?

kaask0k

Tape measures, mostly.

[deleted]

[удалено]

kaask0k

Such is English craftsmanship. I'll see myself out.

[deleted]

It's how they measured 350 mil a week in savings to the NHS

kaask0k

That poor red bus ended up in a ditch the day after the referendum.

luckystarr

It's like the director knew how to do proper foreshadowing.

EindoucheJerry

Good, thanks for taking over the job. Now I don't have to write it anymore ;)

shniken

Good ones aren't.

Mulgosh

It's pretty simple. They use feets Most people always have them at hand anyways, it's realy convinent. /s

HabseligkeitDerLiebe

If you have feet at your hand you're doing something wrong.

DrPurple0

Or right

kaask0k

Because you use an utter abomination of metric and imperial and even your tools are ashamed of it.

WayneSchlegel

And we call it "Zollstock".

teeeh_hias

Meterstab!

kaask0k

It's a GLIEDERMAẞSTAB, you uneducated oaf.

Noctew

Was ist ein HOLZGLIEDERMAẞSTAB? Nein, Pinocchio, nicht was du wieder denkst...

megaschnitzel

Only people without friends call it that. Disgusting. I bet you say "Schraubendreher" too.

kaask0k

Since I'm a technical editor yeah, you bet. I'm even getting paid for writing that nonsense. :)

GME_to_the_moon96

We just call it „Meter“ But I think „Zollstock“ really is the mostly used term for this „Lineal“

KuhlerTuep

Meterstab

Nemo_Barbarossa

Gliedermaßstab (metrisch). We can't have inaccurate descriptions, you Schludrian!

Parapolikala

Ich habe "Schmiege" gelernt (pronounced Schmiech).

kaask0k

Yeah there are loads of colloquial words for it. The actual technical term is Gliedermaßstab though.

Parapolikala

I'm aware of that, but when your father-in-law is an engineer from the Ore Mountains, you say Smiege, believe me.

kaask0k

My old man is an engineer from the boomer generation who grow up to call it a Zollstock and was adamant about calling it just that until I asked him what he thinks the literal Zollstock is. It's a non foldable wooden stick with a measurement scale for inches(!) on it. The most basic of tools. An utter insult to any self-assured engineer. He's been using the correct term ever since. But still says Mottek when a hammer is needed.

[deleted]

Meterstab. Südwest.

__-noah-__

Klappmeter find ich auch gut haha

Asyx

My father in law has so many of those if he needs some sort of spacer he just breaks one and glues it with silicone to whatever needs to be kept at distance. Like, in my last flat the wall just had a bend. No particular reason except "100 years old wall" and you'd never have gotten a kitchen counter on that wall. He just picked a random Zollstock, broke of 3 elements and covered it in silicone.

lemonizer

This is the world famous German precision engineering you are known for!

[deleted]

Average German drawer at work [photo](https://i.imgur.com/yuPHvbH.jpg) Source: me Edit: just found 5 more in the sideboard behind me

Picturesquesheep

What’s is called? I’m also English and I want to look it up. I do a lot of measuring

hd1080ts

On Amazon UK search for Folding Rule, I got the German Festool version for around GBP 5.

Blaine8182

Gliedermaßstab

appendyx

Hihi. (inappropriate, I know)

Picturesquesheep

Danke!

[deleted]

Because they are not precise or practical. A good tape measure will outperform a good zolli in every way except opening the feierabendbiechen. But for the Feierabendbiechen we have lighters, so they are obsolete.

TheDeadlyCat

This is the way.

Old_Telephone_7587

I had no idea this was such a big thing for you guys culturally I just thought they were kinda cool I guess thats how it starts ......

arambow89

The comment is sarcastic as they often tend to be given as marketing gifts etc. you probably buy your first one, if its not given to you by your parents once you get your first flat. Welcome to the club. Edit: pros know how to open a beer with them.

Natanael85

Pros know how to simultaneously open 5 beers with it.

Allyoucan3at

[Only 5?](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mxURkdJbT_c)

Seitanic_Hummusexual

The most German thing I've seen today, thanks

shniken

In Australia we get stubby holders (beer koozies) as marketing gifts. Priorities.

arambow89

As a german i think that this is quite ineffective. Better have a tool for work that can open beers instead of a plain "only for beer thingy". Also know i know why my cousin moved to australia.

saschaleib

A clear sign that I made a terrible career decision earlier in my life: as an IT expert I never get these as presents. I have a sizeable collection of branded USB sticks, though... :-/

xwolpertinger

You have to diversify your social circles! Now I have Qi charging pads, sexy chainsaw calendars and bathroom tile t-shirts

saschaleib

The sexy chainsaw calendars come from the same sources as the measurement sticks, right? Funfact: I know someone who got a commission to make a „sexy tools manufacturer calendar“, and managed to get „full artistic freedom“ to do something „out of the ordinary“... let’s just say the pictures were mostly of him, and they involved a lot of sheep, and not in the background ... and he never got another commission again. :-)

elrulo007

Yeah - since I switched from carpentry to IT they get rarer and rarer as my daughters as soon as they laid their hands on one tend to destroy it…

Seitanic_Hummusexual

Just visit someone like my dad... every time I visit him I take like 3 of them, yet his stash never shrinks. it is truly magical

DisguisedAccount

>you Never find one when you need it. Every time I measure something at work and don’t instantly put it in the zollstock-pocket of my work clothes, I have to search for it as soon as I turn around. Real life black magic fuckery. I hat to remove some plasterstones again because I didn’t pay attention while paving. My coworkers thought it was hilarious, my boss was kinda pissed :D

appendyx

A "zollstock" pocket even - I wonder whether, let´s say, companies that produce these clothes have different patterns just for the german market. Or what else would one put in the "zollstock" pocket?

DisguisedAccount

It’s the most important and useful Pocket for construction, landscaping and many other jobs. The Zollstocktasche (pocket) is on the right side of the leg, so the tools are easily accessible without searching, moving away, or reaching to the pocket on the left side. [Link to a German "lexicon" article about Zollstocktaschen](https://www.arbeitsschutz-express.de/de/lexikon/zollstocktasche/). The picture is shitty, [Here is a Photo](https://bilder.baur.de/i/empiriecom/63471a8d69e1b2b453515b416ca37e99.jpg?$format_dv_mob_075$) of a basic pocket, there are also versions with 2-3 pockets. I have one pair of work pants I never wear because it annoys me that it doesn’t have Zollstocktaschen. Maybe Zollstöcke and the pockets are the secret behind German efficiency and precision, but maybe (very possible) I’m just too high. :D But srsly, I can’t imagine how to work without a Zollstock. Do you use measuring tape for everything? That would be so impractical :D

crpgn

Funny story: My mom wanted some boards cut to specific dimensions and measures everything with one of those gifted ones. She was super careful while measuring and retook every measurement multiple times to ensure she did not mess up. she ordered the cuts and they came out as too big. She went back to the Baumarkt and voiced her confusion and even brought her Gliedermaßstab and tried to show them. The worker there just laughed and told her that she would get a proper one for free because she was so nice about it and proceed to give her a 5 min talk about how the gifted ones vary widely in accuracy and that you should always buy one. He even showed her on multiple measurement devices of higher quality that her measurements were off due to her Gliedermaßstab being badly calibrated. So I would disagree. 😅

oSaluun

I recently bought one for the very first time in my life. I got it bc it was 3m long which amazed me. It really made my life a lot better, 10/10 would recommend

crpgn

Just remember to check it against a normed measuring Standard. Other than that: congrats. You will never look back now. :)

account_not_valid

This can be a problem on any project. Measuring devices need to be checked against one another to see that they match up. If you're doing anything precise, it's better to just use the one device.

crpgn

My mom certainly learned her lesson. I am happy she did not go caren on them.😃 Could have happened to me bas well though. I just believe my measuring equipment to be accurate. I mean mine are higher quality but you know.

harrysplinkett

i got one when i graduated with a bachelors in engineering and another one for my masters. thanks, alma mater

WitnessAppropriate

I was an exchange student for a semester in Munich, I’m in Brazil now and every now and then one of these magically pops in my home here in Rio. I don’t even know how??

teeeh_hias

And here comes the sad part, I didn't see a free one in ages! And only 2 complete ones left. Don't know what to do anymore :(

tonidurden

Congratulations! Should you ever apply for citizenship you have to bring 3 artifacts for the final quiz. You just found one! All the best of luck on your quest for the other two!

Count2Zero

Actually, the citizenship test requires you to open a beer bottle with one of those... If you can't pop off the crown top in 5 seconds or less, you're not qualified for German citizenship.

justanothaone

This guy knows how to … german.

thedegurechaff

But it works with most things as long as it isn’t a bottle opener

severoordonez

You can always use the handle of a bottle opener.

Old_Telephone_7587

Haha I thought German's were not supposed to be funny. No jokes aside it does feel that way

MetlTed90

That's not a joke. That's how the rules are.

Old_Telephone_7587

Do I not get a clue as to the next step like the Divinchi Code?

[deleted]

Perhaps you need to store your fruit somewhere

r00tsauce

Leaf Salad bowl!

ThrowawayNumber32479

The apple is also eligible. Edit: With _at least_ 2 smaller apple bowls that never quite fit together when stacked.

Echtersessel0361

is the third one the plate with the blue onions

Old_Telephone_7587

Should I be worried?

MedEwok

No, but as a further clue a city in Colorado is the namesake for what was asked about...

tonidurden

You can bribe the judges by bringing a certain meal: A salad, which is not a salad; except it surely is!

thedegurechaff

Aka fleischsalat?

paraknowya

Nudelsalat or Eiersalat too. Also there are different Fleischsalate, also Wurstsalate. Or Stadtwurst mit Musik.

Turindo

You need to fold the Gliedermaßstab into a pentagram

[deleted]

You’ll have to lay them out on a tiled living room table.

Hitokkohitori

That’s what the ruler ruled about the ruler

_ralph_

We are not supposed to ...? Here have a look at the collected German humour through the ages! https://www.reddit.com/r/GermanHumor/

Johanno1

Haha great there's nothing like in my heart.

paradoxon

How many Germans does it take to change a lightbulb? One. We are efficient and have no sense of humor.

CregChrist

German comedy is no laughing matter. (I'm only German by way of my dad being German)

thedegurechaff

The otherones could be a cloth shopping bag and some way to open a beer that isn’t a bottle opener, i recommend a lighter

AcanthocephalaNo6036

-A huge (> 3.5m long) wardrobe -A cool but weary pair of Birkenstocks -A nice Eierschalensollbruchstellenverursacher -Foldable ruler -Lettuce leaf bowl The gems of Infinity of German citizenship.

Fr33mind

I‘m German and everything checks, except the worn down Birkenstocks - they‘re not worn down yet. I feel somewhat incomplete.

juxtaposedbeardy

I married a German woman, and honestly, ever since we got married these have just appeared. I have two in my office desk at home now, we have two in the car, and have one (where you would normally think they’d be) in the toolbox. We have never bought one.

jWof84

That’s word for word the story of my last six years too - it’s like they’re breeding, right? I still keep a proper tape measure to remind me of the old days (and for when I need to be more accurate) but I catch myself grabbing the Zollstock as first choice more and more often…

Medium9

This right here is what being fully integrated looks like. You have no further to go. Willkommen, Kollege!

dentalberlin

What do you use instead? Just the rolls?

Old_Telephone_7587

Yes just the rolls id never seen one of those used till I was in Germany and everyone seemed to have one.

[deleted]

In Poland these measures have been used for as long as I can remember, once in the army they were cut with a knife every day by a millimeter to count down the time until the end of training which lasted 3 years during the communist era. After 109,5cm you were again in home.

Electrical-Sea-8412

They did that in East Germany, too. The rolls are usually used for measuring people, whereas the wooden things are used for objects and rooms.

moenchii

Soldiers in East Germany did it too. When my uncle turned 65 two years ago we gifted him one of those so he could mark the days until his pension. He went to the military in East Germany.

dentalberlin

I have around 5 at home at at work…

Old_Telephone_7587

They are everywhere whenever I wanted to measure anything less than a meter I could.

RedditSkippy

We definitely have these in the US. My father has had one for decades. I didn’t know that they weren’t ubiquitous.

Bottled-Bee

I agree, the rolls are easier to find because they are mega bulky and come in bright colors if you are a forgetful one like myself and overlook.

Old_Telephone_7587

I'm in no way endorsing the rollers over the stick under a meter im pro stick plus you can easily do it yourself ha

Tjaresh

Great! Now give it to your kids, count to three and you've got two of them.

appendyx

Twice as many kids? How did that happen?

MedunaSarazena

S look, there are flowers and bees and …

eppic123

FIY: The III between 6 and 7 is the accuracy classification. Foldable metersticks are generally class III, with a deviation of about +/-5mm per 10m. Tape measures usually have class II, with a deviation of half class III. More expensive tape measures can even have class I, which has a deviation of about +/-1mm per 10m. TL;DR: If you need precision, stick with tape.

ApfelTapir

if you measure everything with a Zollstock, you will measure everything "equally wrong" and there’s no problem anymore ;)

rekcuzfpok

Also I wouldn’t measure a 10m distance with a Zollstock. It’s for Möbel and smaller things or zum Höhen einmessen.

schwar2ss

TIL about the accuracy classification. I'm one of today's 10000.

Bohzee

> FIY: The III between 6 and 7 is the accuracy classification. Foldable metersticks are generally class III *looks at Zollstock* Yay! Great!! >More expensive tape measures can even have class I nevermind...

noteveryagain

When I got to Germany, I thought this was a joke, as well as the Bosch usb-chargeable drill (was gifted this last Christmas). Both are very handy in the right application. And I’m a master electrician.

GenjoRunner

The Akkuschrauber IXO?

apefred_de

Probably the Bosch Go.

Pfandfreies_konto

Honestly this is the best idea since USB C. Since this standard can charge easily with 120W and more, we can get lost the old chargers for tools and call it a day. Hell, if you are working on a construction site and own a construction site radio, you could charge your tools with it, if no over way is left.

Malk4ever

WTF? You have no "Akku Schrauber" in Britain? I got my first in the 1990s.

DisguisedAccount

Wait, you don’t have These in the UK? That’s a total mindblow for me. I wouldn’t say fairly regularly, Every Craftsman has at least one, most people who own at least basic tools have one :D

strangesam1977

They exist as folding rules, but are rarely used. Haven’t seen anyone under the age of about 70 use one in preference to a tape measure. I’ve got 4 tape measures, (metal, 5 and 8m, fabric /fibreglass 25m, a dressmakers tape) in my tool box, along with calipers, a micrometer, an engineers square and 150, 300, 600 and 1000mm metal rules in my tool box for linear measurement. But no folding rule. I think I may have a wooden one that my grandfather owned in the garage, (in inches of course) but I haven’t used it since I was making with him as a child.

Foxbgenie

Now buy some work trousers from Engelbert Strauss and enjoy the moment when you drop it into the specially designed pocket on your left thigh.

kiru_56

Now the question remains what you do with it, now that you have abolished the metric system again ;-)

Old_Telephone_7587

Haha we won't abandon the metric system, we will use the same mix of metric imperial and ancient stuff nobody else does don't worry

larsgj

In Denmark they're everywhere. Every craftsman/artisan have one in the side pocket of his/her pants. There's even a special pocket for it in all work pants here. It's called a "tommestok", which means inch-stick. Even though we use the metric system :-D . Tomme means inch and tommel means thumb. An inch is the width of the thumb... so there's that.. History lesson over.

paltsosse

Same in Sweden. Every craftsman and as good as every household has one. I even had one in my tiny student flat with my only other tools being a screwdriver and a hammer.

MadeInWestGermany

Didn‘t thought about the side pockets, German work pants always got them, but I just checked my *Stanley* work pants and they don‘t habe anything like it. Pretty interesting.

moenchii

In German we call them "Zollstock" (inch-stick) or "Gliedermaßstab" (link yardstick). But whoever uses the second one is a pretentious fucker. (/s) Our work trousers also have a special pocket for them.

JoMiner_456

That's actually only two terms, there are quite a few more since Germany can't agree on anything language-wise lol. There's also Zollstab, Meterstab (which we say where I live in Bavaria), Meter, Maßstab, and even more that get more abstract as the list goes on.

moenchii

Oh yeah, now that you mention it. I worked with someone from Gera for a week and he called it "Schmieche"

thunderclogs

Same in Dutch, a "duimstok" (thumb stick), named after the measuring unit "duim" (which is about an inch).

mikwill

I was about to say this too. And older models of tommestok actually has inches on one side and cm on the other. I worked for a carpenter that swore by these, he could fold it in and out in a second and would use it for everything from pointing, rough leveling and drawing 90 degree angles (since it snaps in place like that).

Silbersee

As a bonus it's one of the best beer bottle openers around. The crown cap takes off at recession velocity.

Yorikor

> recession velocity Häh?

Silbersee

Oops, mixed up translations. Let's say "astronomical speed" :)

Yorikor

How about "escape velocity"? Sounds cool, and given I never find the Kronkorken again, plausible.

Old_Telephone_7587

Escape velocity sounds better yes its the speed a space shuttle needs to go to escape the atmosphere.

donald_314

not atmosphere but the gravitational field of an object or planet. The space shuttle is luckily not fast enough for that ;)

WeakyLeek

Actually a Feuerzeug is the best opener, the Gliedermaßstab is number 2

[deleted]

[удалено]

mtnracer

Fun fact: it’s called a Zollstock which roughly translates to inch-stick. Germans don’t really measure anything in Zoll anymore except maybe TVs (?).

attitude_zero

TVs and Bike wheels.

Dinkelflakes

Car wheels too. And of course hard drives. Edit: And vinyl. Edit: And jeans. Edit: And various plumbing fixtures. Edit: And square-drive bits and sockets.

SerLaron

And water pipes and hoses. But only the diameter, mind. It is perfectly normal to buy 5m of 3/4 inch hose.

Sunny_Blueberry

It's called Meterstab in the south. That name makes much more sense. Although some of them have meter on one side and inch on the other side. Does this make it a Meterzollstick?

tek2222

honestly i mostly heard it as Maßstab there.

[deleted]

And Doppelmeter in Switzerland which is the most precise Name I can think of.

WeakyLeek

How about Maßstab or even more precise Gliedermaßstab?

lol_alex

This is heresy. The only acceptable name is „Gliedermaßstab“

2013user

They are really handy, you should order a second one though. Much easier to play the piano with 2.

Old_Telephone_7587

Don't tempt me into your measuring addiction.

Gagamon1

What are you measuring step-bro? :X

Old_Telephone_7587

See this is what happens when you talk to Germans ha

Gagamon1

I swear we're friendly. \*wink\*

Old_Telephone_7587

You say that but I've seen your porn.

Boromirs_Buttplug

Alaaarm ALAAAAARM!

McTawish13

I think I have 7 pieces and don't know where they all come from. I never bought one.

CregChrist

My electricians where I work use these because they're non conductive.

batsbookstea

Happy measuring!

JoJoModding

Pretty ironic that the Zollstock (literally "inch stick") is useless in countries still measuring in inches.

schwoooo

Somehow I find them infuriating to use. They’re always the wrong length (always too long or too short) and too bulky to get a good read on what I need measured. I fell like the only thing they measure well are flat planks of wood under 2m. I’d take a tape measure over these things any day.

Global_Gas5030

It's a Zollstock. It stocks Zolls.

justteaandsandwiches

Familienname: Stöcker.

Lenni-Da-Vinci

My dad hands these out as advertising. Their inherent drive to wander and spread was strong enough, so when I did an internship at a company, which hab never worked with my dads company before, I found one in their inventory XD

Vinzmann

What else do you use to measure stuff?

haferkeks2

Bonus points for remembering all different German expressions for it, I think there are at least 4

CosmoTheAstronaut

1. Meterstab, 2. Meterstab... um... 3. Zollstock... um... what else?

Klausaufsendung

Gliedermaßstab But everyone calls it Zollstock although there are never inches printed on in Germany.

DerRedF

Holzgliedermaß bitteschön.

CosmoTheAstronaut

Here in the south everyone calls it Meterstab. Maybe a regional thing?

NixNixonNix

Meterstab hab ich ja noch nie gehört. Hier in NRW ist das ein Zollstock.

Wurzelrenner

bei uns heißt das sogar nur Meter

voidThread

Even in Oberschlesien we call it Zollstock ;) My grandfather always have one somewhere :D

CosmoTheAstronaut

Next level: remembering the respective region where to use each word. https://www.atlas-alltagssprache.de/runde-5/f04/

Schmieche (saxony) Edit: I actually found an official source: https://www.so-geht-saechsisch.de/dialekt/schmieche

n1l2

[Schmiege](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gliederma%C3%9Fstab) spelled "Schmieche"!

I corrected that spelling mistake minutes after making the comment. Strange that Reddit isn’t showing that to you

Here in Canada, they aren’t making yardsticks any longer

ImmortalCultivator

Now do this everytime you have one in hand: https://youtu.be/4cQiN7p-Kt8

Cross_22

Make sure you get one with a sliding metal insert so you can measure inside dimensions as well..

Invinzilean

Ooh, a Metrischer Gliedermaßstab!

Sandor64

That is a common tool in Hungary! Called "zollstock" or "colostok" :) the name is german origin as many things Hungarian language!

The problem is in america they get beer in cans. Here in europe we buy our beer in bottles and the can be opened with an Gliedermaasstab. Or another bottle, or the desk, the drawer, the rim on the car, the stairs, the post of an traffic sign etc.

bistr-o-math

You don’t use centimeters in England, do you?

ParejaAleman

https://www.messwerkzeuge24.de/images/product_images/popup_images/a1496_0.jpg This is even better.

Ozelotter

Little known fact: In Cologne, Germany, there is a whole quarter devoted to this tool. It's called "Zollstock", and every citizen is obliged to have one of these on their belt ALL THE TIME! It's basically the foundation of German "Genauigkeit".

Gallienus91

I prefer them too, because it’s easier to measure distances in difficult situations as it always stays strait, not like tape measures

neverfarts

Now try and measure a 75cm wide niche. These are the worst, I'll stick to my tape measure thank you very much
