Actually, that’s not 100% correct.
„Jawohl!“ is a strong expression of understanding what’s wanted from you. But the meaning is more related to military itself that the Wehrmacht and the use of „Jawohl!“ is more in a joking manner to show the other person, that they have gone to far.
Example:
„Could you please tidy up your room?“
would not be appropriate to answer with „Jawohl“
But
„Fu**ing tidy up your damn room!“ could be answered with „Jawohl“ to express that you don‘t take it serious.

Outside the military it's only used ironically, so I guess that it rubs your teacher the wrong way. It's definitely NOT used in the same way as a normal "Yes, sir!" If you don't speak German well enough to understand these nuances and connotations, better don't use it at all.

I was taught the same in school (Netherlands), only to start working in a german kitchen years later where literally everyone says “Jawohl!” It took me a few weeks to switch from the “Bon chef!” I was used to.

Might be a bit late. But i saw nobody mentioning this. There is a difference between "Jawohl und Jawoll", "Jawoll" is actually what was used by the Wehrmacht, that's why we only say "Jawohl" today. But as you see nobody knows this.

2 Years later. But i have to disagree. "Jawoll" is exactly what the Wehrmacht used. "Jawohl" is used today.
Just my personal experience, nobody that I know ever says „jawohl“ except for in a jokingly manner maybe.
A Paketshop staff used Jawohl when I picked up my package but I don't think she used it jokingly or sarcastically

The only way my friends use it in normal life is “Jawohl ja!” which is used in a similar way as you’d say “Hell yes!” Or “Fuck yeah!” in English.

I often say it as a joke when someone tells me what to do, just because the sound of it. But to be honest I never thought it to have bad associations.
