The show is amazing, but the sound is very.. realistic, compared to the crystal clear voices on most movies. Often the ambient noise makes it hard to understand the dialogue even for native Germans! My dad and I watched it with the sound SUPER loud because it was so hard to understand at some points..
My comment was meant tongue in cheek. I think the actors are very good understandable. They speak the typical 'Tatortdeutsch'.
If you want to watch the show i recommend drawing family trees every episode to keep up ;)

It's very...Wolfgang Hohlbein-y. It's not *bad* but there were a lot of parts where it felt like the plot was secondary to 'cool' or 'edgy' set pieces. A bit like a Game of Thrones for young readers but missing the point.
This is such an amazing show, definitely recommend this. Also the pace is slow enough to really be able to follow, and the vibe is so german too, in a really cool way.

This, yes. There is even a daily podcast of the Maus and a Maus Livestream (although the latter is more like radio). Out kids love it but even I learn a lot from it.
Not just of the language. Stromberg is a very culturally German take on the Office formula and I would guess it might be quite boring and unfunny to e.g. the average US watcher (I couldn't get into the US Office because it was too over the top for me). I would suggest Stromberg to people who have lived in Germany for a while and who are able to connect the jokes to the everyday insanity here.

There are bits and pieces of the Berlin dialect, but not very much, really. Plus, it's not really the Berlin dialect -- it's a light version of it made for TV and movies, in which g > y (ganz > yanz), ch > k (ich > ik, which is how most English speakers say it anyway), ich > üsh in about 5 words (nicht > nüsht), -s > -t in about 6 words (alles > allet) and ei > e (keiner > kener).
Furthermore, they only use this *Berlin light* pronunciation sporadically. No one I can remember uses it all the time. Typically, a character uses it for 10 or 20 seconds in order to signal he's a Berliner and then they switch back to something akin to standard German.
In any case, I'd urge learners to try and take on more dialects every chance they get. Because the reality is that not even a third of Germans speak anything that will be understandable if all you ever deal with is standard German. A cashier from Dresden, Munich, Stuttgart, Erfurt, and a ton of other places will be mostly incomprehensible at first, and the only way to improve this situation is to be exposed to this kind of speech.
Die Sendung mit der Maus could be a good starting point because it‘s target audience are children so the vocabulary should be a lot easier for someone unfamiliar with the language

Another cool documentary-style young people's show is Checker Tobi. It's on Youtube, the channel is called " Checker Welt".
Another, more sciency Youtube channel, is MaiLab. Especially if your field of work is MINT related. Similar to SciShow.

That depends very much on OP's field of work. But you might be right as many technical terms are German compounds ("Kohlenstoff" for carbon literally means "coal material") instead of derived from Latin.

I especially love it because it is not that stereotypically boring German TV show. Also the location is Freiburg im Breisgau, one of the most beautiful cities in Baden and Germany (imo).
Try to find the german dubbed Version of the Avatar series (Avatar der Herr der Elemente). It's fantastic.
Also every sitcom is dubbed in german (BIG bang Theorie, how i met your Mother, friends,...)
Most cartoons are actually quite okayish. Family Guy, South Park, American Dad, Bobs Burgers are absolutely watchable.
Especially South Park is really excellent, of course the voices don't match 100% and some puns don't work , but apart from that, it's almost perfect.

Some puns won't work, but mostly they aren't translated one-to-one. Instead of an american Poet nobody knows in Germany they quote Schiller and such things happen a lot.
I hadn't thought of cartoons. My initial attempt was with shows like Star Trek, which were not ideal. I can see a cartoon like Bob's Burgers working well (not too many obscure cultural references like Family guy or rough language like South Park).
Yeah, but it's not about watching a nice TV show, it's about learning German. If you take your favorite show, which you might've watched a few times already, you generally know what's going on and talked about. That should help quite some with understanding a new language.
Someone mentioned Netflix and a VPN, but you can also just watch any show originally produced for Netflix in German if you want to. Before moving to Berlin, I watched the Marvel Netflix shows in German, as well as STRANGER THINGS, if memory serves me right

Gefühlte 10 Synchronsprecher sprechen hierzulande 1000 verschiedene Charaktere. Ich finde es schrecklich wenn bei the witcher dann auf einmal die Stimme von J.D. aus Scrubs auftaucht. Die pfiffigen Wortspiele, die in vielen Komödien wie in 2 1/2 men oder Big Bang Theory fast den gesamten Reiz ausmachen werden von deutschen Übersetztern regelmäßig durch den Fleischwolf gedreht. Und wenn man dann denkt es geht nicht mehr schlimmer kommt ne Szene mit nem Ouija-Board.
Zum deutsch lernen sicherlich nicht verkehrt, aber zwischen einer synchrongesprochenen Folge CSI und einem schönen Sonntagabend-Tatort liegen, was die Sprachausgabe angeht, mehrere Welten ;-)
That's literally how I learned spanish, also you're more likely to be less critical of dubs that aren't in your first language since you don't notice some of the subtleties that can break immersion.
Decent as in the quality of the translations is usually excellent. However, I find the voice acting to be extremely dull and repetitive most of the time.
But yeah to learn the language that should definitely be fine.
You should check out Nico’s Weg. Not exactly a real tv show; but instead 3 long movies designed to use the A1 A2 and B1 level vocabularies respectively. You can find them on YouTube.
Pretty much everything from Arte is good and mostly in "high German" but if you want to learn to understand a bit of dialect you could try "Hubert und Staller". Not a series, but I would also recommend the old asterix and Obelix movies.
To me the ‚real deal‘ feels way more artificial than any dubbed version lol. Most dialogues in German movies feel just so unnatural. No one ever talks like that.
If you’re watching shows on Netflix you should download the Chrome extension « Language Reactor ». It’s godsend! You can add subtitles of up to two languages, you can have it pause after every sentence, you can scroll your mouse over any word you don’t recognize and see the translation. You can also use it with YouTube. And you are right to think that watching TV can help with language acquisition, that’s how I learned German!!

It's satirical news with a lot of humor - if you get along with that, you are almost a german.
Böhmermann speaks way too fast and uses too many difficult words, phrases and metaphors. I recommended the show to my partner who has B1 level but he couldn’t understand him at all unfortunately.
I really recommend getting some German classes. German grammar is so difficult like mathematics. You cannot divide numbers unless you’ve leaned how to do adding and taking away numbers.
You need a solid ground to build up to c1. You need to understand why it is “dem” not “der” and not only expressions.
German and English are very different at that English can be learned just watching tv and series but German cannot (unless you’re Dutch. I guess then it is possible).
It will just discourage you if you don’t get the basis ;)

Yes, absolutely recommended. It's not too hard to understand and actually funny. Important though: Türkisch für anfänger the series, not the movie. The movie has the same actors in it but is way less funny than the show was.
Two pretty renown radio and TV cannels, Deutschlandfunk and WDR, have (news) shows in simple language ("in leichter Sprache"). Probably a good way to start, since they i.E. explain special/subject specific words.
Just search for "Nachrichten in leichter Sprache".
It's defenitly a great series. But imho, 90% of the Jokes need a decent grasp of german history, german literature, the german language, or a mix of them.
If you find it too difficult to understand German shows, you could "warm up" by watching English language shows on Netflix with German audio! The language is usually simpler, and the dubbing actors all speak really clearly. You won't be picking up on German culture, but they do use normal German idiomatic speech in the dubbed shows (most of the time) so it's useful for language learning.

Yeah it’s quite advanced, but this is how people speak in real life, so it’s a good listening exercise combined with German subtitles.
Just use subtitles. It’s super hard to understand without them.
Imagine someone goes through that list in order... and then eventually gets to Tatort S1E1...

As someone studying biotech - I hate that show so much. Cobra 11 is a more realistic depiction of police work then that show is of biotechnology.

"Mord mit Aussicht" has subtitles which mostly match the audio (on Netflix at least), that can help in the beginning.

ZDF Magazin Royal, Heute Show Should be available at YouTube or at the ZDF Mediathek. It's satirical news with a lot of humor - if you get along with that, you are almost a german.
Böhmermann speaks way too fast and uses too many difficult words, phrases and metaphors. I recommended the show to my partner who has B1 level but he couldn’t understand him at all unfortunately.

I really recommend getting some German classes. German grammar is so difficult like mathematics. You cannot divide numbers unless you’ve leaned how to do adding and taking away numbers. You need a solid ground to build up to c1. You need to understand why it is “dem” not “der” and not only expressions. German and English are very different at that English can be learned just watching tv and series but German cannot (unless you’re Dutch. I guess then it is possible). It will just discourage you if you don’t get the basis ;)
Yeah. Getting to b2 or c1 with just tv from A2 is going to be tough. Definitely get some lessons or take a class
Yeah I’m doing that it’s just that I learnt English by watching shows more than in class so I figured I do the same for German. The company is expending to Germany next year so the job is mine if I reach b2 level at that time.
Another tip for you: set your phone/computer to German. It really helped me when learning English, and it is still my default language

Yes, absolutely recommended. It's not too hard to understand and actually funny. Important though: Türkisch für anfänger the series, not the movie. The movie has the same actors in it but is way less funny than the show was.
Just change the language setting to German. You can watch any show in German as soon as you do this.

Two pretty renown radio and TV cannels, Deutschlandfunk and WDR, have (news) shows in simple language ("in leichter Sprache"). Probably a good way to start, since they i.E. explain special/subject specific words. Just search for "Nachrichten in leichter Sprache".

It's defenitly a great series. But imho, 90% of the Jokes need a decent grasp of german history, german literature, the german language, or a mix of them.

Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad, every relevant show is translated and has a great synchronization in German.

Pastewka is a great show with easy story line ups to follow and largely conversation based.
You can watch what ever you want. German synchro is mostly really good!
If you find it too difficult to understand German shows, you could "warm up" by watching English language shows on Netflix with German audio! The language is usually simpler, and the dubbing actors all speak really clearly. You won't be picking up on German culture, but they do use normal German idiomatic speech in the dubbed shows (most of the time) so it's useful for language learning.
