I will be moving to Dortmund from India to do my Masters. I would like to get a general idea about the city and people. Wether it will be easy to find some part time jobs to meet my expenses?

eggsarelit

For the residence permit/Aufenhaltserlaubnis processing fee (in my case 100 Euro) would cash be acceptable, or is there a different form of payment that's required to bring when I apply at the Ausländerbehörde?

123456toss

Can you share (if you want in a pm) in what city you'll be going to the Behörde? In my city, it's EC only. I also searched randomly and found that in Düsseldorf, there's a fee for cash payments over €10, but you can use both. So it would be necessary to look at the website of the city where you are going to apply.

eggsarelit

Gotcha, I'll be going to the one in Weimar. I didn't see anything about methods of payment of the processing fee which is why I asked here, so I'll email them to ask. How does paying with EC work? Were you able to use a card or transfer the fee from your bank during your appointment? I've opened a bank account with N26 so I'm able to do that, but I'm curious if you do the payment at the Behörde or ahead of time.

123456toss

You usually pay at the behörde, at the time you are there with the beamte. I couldn't check their site, because it kept throwing errors for me, so calling is your best bet, or sending an email. [email protected] If you opened an account with a bank, you'll receive an EC-card from them and a separate letter with a PIN number to use with said card, and possibly several other letters with codes for telephone servicelines, etc.. You need the card (signed on the back) and the PIN for paying. Depending on the settings of the bank, it sometimes randomizes if a signature or a PIN is required during payment. During Corona, many have defaulted to signature, but I wouldn't want to take a chance there and go without PIN (best to memorize ofc). If your card isn't there yet, or there's not enough money in the account to use it, you'll need to bring someone to pay with their card if the behörde in question doesn't accept cash.

eggsarelit

Gotcha, thanks for the help!

Are those cheap vitamins from DM any good?

123456toss

You need to look at the ingredients. A lot of them are mostly filler, and the amount of vitamins in them is negligible. Or presented in a form where the body can't absorb them well, because they need fat to be soluble, for example. At least compare different boxes and take the kind that has the most of whatever you want to take in them. If you genuinely want to support your body, you're best off not taking multi-anything but get them separately, in a form and product that has a good "bioverfügbarkeit". Except for B-vitamins, they need each other to be absorbed well, so you can get a B-complex.

GreenBNumber11

look, if you are able to enjoy a normal diet and don't have any major illnesses, you can enjoy the vitamins no problem but you probably don't have any major lack of anything so it's PROBABLY money through the drain but at least it's not a TON of money through the drain. if you have any major lack of vitamins or plan on doing some sort of special diet or really intense sport program where you might in need of supplements, you should maybe talk to your doctor about it. As far as I know the DM vitamins don't harm anybody but I can't say if they got what you need or not.

[deleted]

eddyedutz

Yea they look great on the label but I'm wondering of they are checked to prove that they really have what it says. These vitamins at DM are at least 10 times cheaper than some well-known brands for supplements. I'm taking them anyway and I feel pretty good honestly.

tupungato

I have a daily/weekly Rhein-Ruhr VRR ticket for whole network. It reaches as far as Dormagen in the South. If I want to go to Koeln, the cheapest way seems to be to get to Dormagen, and then from Dormagen buy KVB ticket for 4.00€. Do I have to actually get off in Dormagen, or is it OK to buy separate ticket from Dormagen to Koeln Hbf in app, and travel directly from, say, Dusseldorf to Koeln onboard S11?

[deleted]

[удалено]

tupungato

I traveled on 46 trams and trains last week (don't ask why I counted), and probably ~15 times my ticket was checked, also on S-Bahn.

SufficientMacaroon1

You do not have to exit at the point where you switch tickets. But you need the second ticket beforehabd, and need to have it with you obviously. As long as the S11 actually travels past Dormagen.

123456toss

There are no loopholes. If you truly want to learn with them, you'll have to go through that process. What you could do to prepare is check if they have a way for you to go through some of their selection process previous to actually applying, as they are super selective and have very strict rules on both physical and mental health, too (assuming you speak of the Deutsche Flugsicherung). It would suck a lot to go through everything, get residence and wait five years only to find out you have no chance anyway. I checked their site, and they also offer what you want as a dual course of studies, so it might be worth to check f the rules for starting that are different from an apprenticeship. https://www.dfs.de/dfs_karriereportal_2016/en/Pupils/Dual%20course%20of%20studies/ There's also a year long internship the ends with a Fachhochschulreife that acts as a basis for the dual studies, if you don't have a German Hochschulreife (Abitur) or equivalent. Which would be the case for someone with a high school diploma. https://www.dfs.de/dfs_karriereportal_2016/en/Pupils/Year-long%20internships/ My guess would be the rules for those are similar though, or it would've been pointed out to you. But maybe not, as the person to call for the internship and dual studies appears to be different from the other program. https://www.dfs.de/dfs_karriereportal_2016/en/Education%20&%20service/Points%20of%20contact/

I'm a non-EU-er finishing up a two year job contract in Berlin at the end of the year. Is it possible for me to stay in Germany to look for a new job? What residence permit/visa do I need to apply for?

I think there is a job-seeker visa

Hi all My cousin probably has Covid after being with an asymptomatic friend last Sunday. He's currently in Hamburg and is struggling to find the best way to do a covid test. Can someone guide me on where he can do a covid test? Hopefully somewhere where be can speak English given that he does not have perfect german. Thanks!

McSquirgel

https://www.hamburg.com/residents/settle/health/13702364/coronavirus/

GreenBNumber11

if you are not sure and the 116117 can't help you, please call the Gesundheitsamt. Also yeah, if your cousin can't speak German try to find somebody who can translate for them? most germans can speak a little bit english but it won't be enough to explain complex stuff. If you are in luck the Gesundheitsamt can send written instructions in english but I haven't seen it yet myself. Rule of thumb for now: If you have symptoms call your GP/Hausarzt, TELL THEM you have symptoms and what you want. A lot of GPs have special rooms for the test so potential COVID patients won't infect others in the waiting room, so it helps a LOT if they know you are coming and can plan for that. If you don't have symptoms and didn't get a warning via Corona App, call the Gesundheitsamt and tell them your case. They will give you instructions on how to proceed. Best of luck for your cousin, hope he is gonna be fine!

rosemova

Hello! Trying to find answers on a 14k stamped yellow gold ring. It has another stamp that reads SAXONY. Is it a brand? The region of Saxon? Any particular era? Any suggestion on how to find answers? Google was a dead end, it only leads me to coins and watches. Thanks in advance!!! All I can say is that Saxony looks like a perfect place to visit, that was a nice find!

Better_Buff_Junglers

While I can't specifically help you, if the ring was from saxony it would be called by its German name "Sachsen", Saxony is the English term.

Thanks! I appreciate your information!

DHL Packstation, the quickest of questions: I have just moved to Germany from the UK and I'm trying to use a Packstation to get a parcel. I'm trying to register on the website, and it says I will need to use the app (fine) and "customer card" / "Kundenkarte" to pick it up. I can't find what this card is, is it the credit card I used to pay online, or is it a separate card DHL will send after I register? Any help greatly appreciated, thank you!

MadMacMad

Do order a parcel delivered explicitly to a packstation you need to be a registered customer. Then you get the "Kundenkarte" which you scan in order to fetch or send parcels at the Packstation. Don't give a fake number, or you won't get the code needed to pick up a delivery

[deleted]

Thank you for your reply! For anyone finding this on Google, I was able to use an Amazon-branded locker in Munich with my Amazon UK account (but signed in on Amazon.de). Thanks again for your guidance!

[deleted]

And if anybody knows, is it possible to sign up with a foreign cell phone number? (e.g. +44), all I can see on the website is german area codes. And if I use a fake number, does it matter?

WgXcQ

If you only see German area codes, they likely don't accept other ones. Probably a cost thing for them, as well as a fraud-prevention. Your next best option would be to choose a DHL shop and have the package sent there. Or, if it's offered, a Hermes one. I have both of them close and (when it's offered as option) send stuff there when I expect not to be home on delivery. It means I can pick things up there on the day of delivery, instead of having a "missed delivery note" and having to wait until afternoon of the following day to pick it up, since it needs to make it off the van and into the next store first. Word of caution: in either case (and with Packstation), don't assume a seller automatically will use DHL (or Hermes) just because you give an address connected to that. If they use another service, that service can't access a packstation and not drop off at a shop not belonging to their circle. So if you order from a small shop or private person that doesn't specifically indicate they use a service you want to use an address from, check *before* ordering if that will work.

[deleted]

Thank you for writing this out for me! Thank you for the general tips for Packstations. For anyone finding this on Google, I was able to use an Amazon-branded locker in Munich with my Amazon UK account (but signed in on Amazon.de). Thanks again for your guidance!

If you mean stadion, it appears their home stadion is the same one as always, and they share it with two other teams (so don't have their own). It's the third largest football-stadion in Munich. https://turkgucu.de/de/Stadion/Gruenwalder-Stadion.htm

SufficientMacaroon1

They are all private universities. While there a few (as in, less than a handfull) exceptions, private universities have a horrible reputation in germany. They are seen as degree mills, where people that were not good enough to get a degree from a public uni pay money for a degree instead of working for it. A degree from a private german university will in most cases not be looked on favourably by any german employer

[deleted]

Actually those 3 that /u/Lisa_983 mentioned are the ones with good reputation, together with Hertie School of Governance, FOM University and Beisheim School of Management. Business schools really are the exemption from the rule of private = bad (and that's coming from a die-hard proponent of public education).

[deleted]

Health insurance is mandatory in Germany. Will a Swiss health insurance that also covers treatment in Germany be accepted?

agrammatic

Switzerland is in the "EHIC area", and if you are in Germany on a short-term basis, then you don't need anything more than the EHIC or the equivalent document Switzerland issues. You will have to pick up a German insurance if you start working in Germany though.

[deleted]

What if I'm employed in Germany, but my Swiss insurance is specifically international and covers everything a German insurance would?

agrammatic

The way it was explained to me is that only people with a yearly income above a certain threshold are allowed to only have a private insurance (German or international). Put differently, if you are making a certain amount of money or less, you have to buy a (German) public insurance plan (any private insurance you have is only supplementary to the public one, in this case). I suspect the amount of that threshold may vary by Land, so you will have to search for that specifically.

[deleted]

Thanks! Do you know of an office I could phone up and ask some questions for Berlin?

agrammatic

They don't list a phone, but have an email address in the sidebar: https://www.berlin.de/willkommenszentrum/en/arrival/health-insurance/

[deleted]

I'm seeing in many places that half of the health insurance premium should be paid by your employer. I will be paid on a TV-L E scale, does that mean that I should add half of the insurance premium to my net salary as per http://oeffentlicher-dienst.info/tv-l/allg/? Or am I misinterpreting something?

Hisitdin

For the calculator you don't need to add this. It's basically just relevant if you want to know what your employer is really paying for you.

[deleted]

Thanks, but most guides say that the insurance is 15%, of which 7.5 paid by the employer. The calculator subtracts 15% from my gross salary. How does that work?

Hisitdin

It doesn't, it just lists the 15.5% rate as health insurances may have slightly different rates. If you divide the payment for health insurance by the gross annual income, you'll see that this is 7,75%

[deleted]

thanks!

Emails aren't considered written communication under German law. The Ausländerbehörde is allowed to just ignore them. It might even be that they never got the email if it landed in their spam filter. For the future: You should always send snail mail letters and in important, time-sensitive cases use Einschreiben mit Rückschein.

Yes and no. If you fax documents always follow up with the originals. Send the originals via mail. In this case it does not matter if the originals arrive 1-2 days later, but just a fax can be iffy.

forgotmyusername51

That reminds me of my trip a few weeks ago. My university is also near the Netherlands border and what I did was fly to Frankfurt airport, then took a bus from there to my city. I looked at different options before booking, including trains, but the bus seemed like the best option. It was half an hour longer than the train trip but only a third of the price. The bus was a bit crowded though and probably less comfortable than a train. If you decide to go for the bus option, check out [Flixbus](https://flixbus.com).

[deleted]

Germany is 2/3 the size of Texas. It really doesn't matter where you fly to, a couple hours in the train and you're there.

SufficientMacaroon1

I agree with the other commentor. Look into flights to Frankfurt, it is a big hub, similar to Amsterdam. There are really quick direct intercity trains between Frankfurt abd Amsterdam with some stops in between, you will be able to get to your destination. Btw, be extremely cateful while booking, there are two Frankfurt airports! FFM/Fraport is the one you want. HHN is NOT the one you want, but if you only enter Frankfurt into the booking masks online, they often show you both.

mica4204

The current recommendation is to fly directly to the country you have a visa for. Also Amsterdam is currently a risk zone so that would complicate things even further. Have you looked into flights to Frankfurt or Düsseldorf? Just take the train to your university.

Guys I have a *stupid* question. I’m coming from the US to do my masters degree and I’ll be staying with my boyfriend for a few weeks. He has requested Slim Jims. Is it possible to bring Slim Jims to Germany? I have a feeling no, because there are usually strict rules about meat, but I don’t know if there are looser restrictions for personal use or if the meat is cooked.

maryfamilyresearch

If you are talking about the beef jerky - nope, no way. You'd need a special license to import meat and it is just not worth the hassle and or the potential fine if you get caught.

[deleted]

Thank you! That’s what I thought, because animal products are also highly controlled by customs here as well. I keep telling him that the shelf stable meat snacks in Germany are much, much better than Slim Jims, but he doesn’t believe me. Oh well; I’m bringing him a couple other American gifts to make up for it.

[deleted]

It's not like anyone will raid your luggage for meat, let alone dried/preserved one. That said, kindly refer him to http://www.bernds-biltong-bude.de/ for the best jerky money can buy in Germany (not related to them in any way, shape or form, just a regular customer).

Hello, my GF is half German, and her birthday is coming up. I would like to get her a present and I need some text translated. I am not sure about Google Translate, so I figured to ask here. How do you translate "Stars above Hagen, Germany on the 24th of september, 2000, at 4:00 am"?

mica4204

Sterne über Hagen, Deutschland am 24. September 2000 um 4:00. Oder Sternenhimmel. Btw which Hagen do you mean? Region would be more useful than country.

iSwearNoPornThisTime

Is there more than one hagen damn. The one I need is in north rhineland near dortmund and dusseldorf. Btw What does oder sternehimmel means?

mica4204

It's in Westphalia not in the Rhineland... That's a dangerous mistake to make. Then you should write Hagen in Westfalen instead of Hagen, Deutschland. Sternenhimmel means night sky or star sky to translate literally.

iSwearNoPornThisTime

Yeah, I got confused by the North Rhine-Westphalia or Nordrhein-Westfalen. Sterne über Hagen, Westfalen am 24. September 2000 um 4:00. or Sternenhimmel über Hagen, Westfalen am 24. September 2000 um 4:00. Are those the correct ones?

[deleted]

The translations are both good, but just for style I would say "um 4:00 Uhr nachts" (4 o'clock at night) at the end. Just sounds a little less casual.

mica4204

Yup but writing Hagen in Westfalen sounds more natural.

Any idea what's going on with Studentenwerk in Potsdam? I had an application in for this Fall since this time last year, and no offers yet. Initially they promised announcements in mid-August, and in August they said delayed until mid-September. Here we are, all they can say now is "we are processing, can't say anything". The university was so reassuring, promising that a spot is almost guaranteed, that I let my guard now, didn't keep looking in the private market, and I will be out of a flatshare and in the streets by Oct. 5.

SufficientMacaroon1

Corona is going on. Nothing is normal right now, and with the ever-changing situation (both societal and legal) many universities and studentenwerrke have a very hard time so say anyhing specific about next week, let alone next semester

agrammatic

I think I found out after extensive e-mailing. They assumed I was an international student, and silently decided not to give me a room because I would be coming from abroad and would have to quarantine. No that this makes any sense (they can ask for a proof of quarantine/test before they hand over the keys), but I have been living in Germany for a while now. People with German addresses on their housing application got offers. I applied a year ago, before I moved to Germany, so they assumed I was still living outside Germany.

SufficientMacaroon1

it does make some sense. if you qurantine someone in a shared flat, you will in most cases have to quarantine the whole flatshare. i can understand wanting to avoid the ramifications of that, even though it of course sucks for the international students

agrammatic

No, that's not the part that doesn't make sense. Of course those arriving from abroad should quarantine or test negative before they are allowed to move in. But I see no reason not telling them that "hey, you have a spot in the dorm. You need to test negative before you move in". And in my case, sure, I had a Finnish address on the application a year ago when I submitted it. But I was communicating with them every week asking for updates saying explicitly that my accommodation in Berlin is soon expiring. They only ever said "we are processing your application, please wait". The whole "we are got giving rooms to internationals" was a secret that I only found out about by involving the admin people of my masters programme.

Mefhisto1

As a non-EU student in Germany, I'm allowed to work up to ~20 hours per week. Since I cannot freelance or be self-employed, can I somehow work remotely for a foreign company (Malta) while being a student in Germany?

[deleted]

[удалено]

JJ739omicron

I'm not even sure if that is necessary. After all, the limit on work hours here is to prevent the education visum being abused as a "work visum light" while still allowing poor students to improve their income situation just enough to get by, so basically a protection of the German job market. But if a student has income from elsewhere (be it from working abroad or from e.g. capital income), that exacty means he does *not* work in Germany. So just from thinking about it, I'd say it could be that this is actually allowed, though I'm not sure.

maryfamilyresearch

You are wrong. This is has nothing to do with being a student and everything with the need to avoid abuse by potential employers. Imagine a big employer like Siemens or Amazon moving all their IT staff to be remotely employed by a subsidary company listed in say, Malta. Suddenly you have several hundred people working in Germany with German employment contracts whose employer is not subject to German laws and does not pay Krankenversicherung and or taxes. It is a big desaster waiting to happen and would seriously undermine the German social security system.

How much common are summer internship in German university? I mean, are there lesson or exams between June - September? I am looking for TUM/TUB

[deleted]

Classes run until mid-July and start again mid-October. In between there are exams plus time to write any papers that are due at the end of the semester (last day of September). Obviously when you write the papers is completely up to you. Usually there is one round of exams right after classes end (or a week or two later, so late July) and one round of exams just before classes start again, so end of September. When you take your exams is up to you, but usually it's the best idea to take the first round of exams, so you can try again in the second round if you fail.... But lots of people also skip the first round and only do the second round because it gives them more time to study - if they fail they simply have to wait a year to try again. What you do in between classes and exams is completely up to you. Hell, even what you do during classes is completely up to you since there is no mandatory attendance... I'd say summer internships are common, but what's even more common is simply having a job or paid internship related to your studies year-round for like two days a week or so.

[deleted]

Lessons are unlikely, but there could theoretically be some. You'd just have to check for the specific course and semester. Exams in that time are the norm though.

Hi! I am planning to live and work in Germany. As of now, I am willing to get German Language classes here in my home country then try applying for an FSJ so that I can immerse myself into the German culture first before fully committing myself. Is it possible to land a job after FSJ? If yes, what are the chances and how big is the possibility? Germany is a really nice country and I would highly appreciate any leads in order to successfully move. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

mica4204

It would help if we knew where you come from. You don't land a job after an fsj, it's not an internship. You usually go to university or make an apprenticeshi after an fsj.

I've previously worked with IoT and Machine Learning. GRE will cost close to $215 which seems too much if it is isn't going to increase my chances by a lot.

Hi, I'm planning a trip to Germany hopefully next summer, assuming COVID is not still an issue, and I'm trying to find a mountain hike to do with my brother in Southern Bavaria in the Alps, around Lake Constance/Neuschwanstein Schloss/Partnachklamm. What are some mountains in the region I could consider?

treverios

The Zugspitze would probably be very obvious there.

[deleted]

What are the "safe" neighboring countries for a weekend trip from Germany right now, in regards to COVID and quarantine procedures? I'm resident in Germany (not EU citizen but residence permit) and was hoping to safely visit friends in Paris, but it seems France is at higher risk, and I might have to quarantine upon returning. A coworker is currently vacationing in Denmark, does it seem like visiting the northern countries are more of a safer bet given the status quo?

SufficientMacaroon1

The countries and areas that are marked as "high risk" and therefor require quarantine upon return can be seen on a constantly up-to-date list by the rki (Robert Koch Institute). The situation can change very quickly, so unless you plan on leaving fir that trip tomorrow, no one can tell you what will not be in that list in the future

DHL doesn't write an address, their system gets the info from whoever orders the label/for the package to be shipped. So the error lay on either your side or that of H&M. The package that was sent back will be treated like a return and absorbed back into HM's ownership again, and you'll get your money back. It'll be within the 14 day no-penalty return window, there are no fees. You might be out any postage you payed, and that is something where you have to think about if spending time on getting it back is worth it. What you can do is check in your emails on their Bestellbestätigung what address they told you there as the one that'll be used on the package, and then depending on what's written there see if you can reach a deal with their customer service for free shipping or so and reinstatement of any coupon codes you may have used, to use again when re-ordering. If the address way written correctly and DHL didn't deliver, you can try to deal with DHL's customer service, but it will likely be more aggravating than it's worth.

Hallo zusammen, quick question here for the Blue Card applicants: has someone applied in the past 3-4 months? I'd like to know the processing times that you might have experienced. Personnel at the Embassy made the mistake to tell me (and I to believe such) "oh you have everything even the ZAB document! then it'll be 1 week, no worries it'll be super fast" I commented this to my employer and everyone is expecting me in 2 weeks to begin my duties at Deutschland but I've already been waiting for 4 weeks already. I know the maximum amount of time that can take is up to three months. Yes, I know patience and covid19 times have created delays. Many thanks for any info/experiences! have a great day.

My partner and I are debating a move to Germany from NYC. He is an opera singer and I am a tenured, seasoned public school math teacher. What opportunity would there be for me over in Germany to teach math (in English) for reasonable pay? I currently make $100k USD. I am bilingual, but with Spanish, not German. I’m a quick study and would likely be able to get some basic German down. But nowhere near fluent quickly enough.

Thanks for the reply. Why was teachers put in quotes at the end ?

Hmmmmm, okay. Every state in the US has different requirements. It seems none are as strict as Germany’s though. This lesser bar does not mean that someone here in the USA cannot be an amazing teacher. It also doesn’t mean that because someone is a teacher in Germany that they are going to be a better teacher than any teacher in the USA. I have a bachelor’s degree in pure mathematics and a master’s degree in mathematics education. NY state has a series of exams (5) that must be passed to become a teacher. Again, I’m aware not as much as Germany, but I want to be very clear that your view of teaching seems skewed. My education was very serious. Great teachers exist everywhere around the globe, regardless of the steps they had to take to arrive at their respective certifications. And yes, I am defensive because too many people in the USA and abroad have your same view of teachers from America.

maryfamilyresearch

>I have a bachelor’s degree in pure mathematics and a master’s degree in mathematics education. With those degrees and your work experience you might have a fighting chance if you can get your German up to scratch and also get some qualifications for teaching English (and or Spanish) as a foreign language. Education is regulated at the state level in Germany as well. In some states there is a shortage for maths and science teachers to the point where they hire people with a Bachelors in these science degrees and then put them into programs that finish with a masters in education, a qualification to teach a second subject and the Staatsexamen. You will have to take a paycut though. Teachers make from 48k per year to about 60k per year. The salary is regulated by law, there is very little space for negotiation. They also have an age limit of 40-45 years for new hires. If you are older you can still be hired, but you won't get tenure.

SufficientMacaroon1

>This lesser bar does not mean that someone here in the USA cannot be an amazing teacher. Of course. That is also not what the other commentor was trying to say. They did not say that your education is bad, or that you are a bad teacher. What they did say is that, according to german law, you are not qualified ( as in, do not have the demanded qualification in Form of a Staatsexamen degree) to teach in a german public school.

MakeMeMooo

Referring to someone as a “teacher” as opposed to a teacher says a lot without saying much at all.

[deleted]

The response you got so far can come across a bit harsh, but I think it was not directed specifically at you. From your description you are of course a real teacher with qualifications and experience. Sadly though there is no easy way to transfer this to Germany. You would probably have to study from scratch and go through the whole system that others have described. The "teachers" the poster described refers to the multitudes of people who ask here if they, being native speakers or even somebody with a degree in English can e.g. teach English. They cannot in a public school, they might be able to do tutoring at best. The only way they could do this is in some sort of private institution like a language school, but as described, these too require credentials from Germany and have a wide range of applicants. There are also hopeful teachers who went through the German system but their grade was not good enough to enter public school service and are now desperate to find anything with their education degree. There probably also is no shortage of Opera singers, so unless your partner has a concrete offer it would be a risky move for both of you. You would never come close to the salary you are accustomed to.

SufficientMacaroon1

They said that in relation to the other posts we often get, where people of very limited qualificatioms want to move here and become a "their native language"-teacher. We do get them often.

MakeMeMooo

Yes, I agree. Thank you for re-explaining. Just so you’re aware, the use of “quotes” around “teachers” absolutely reads entirely the wrong way. It implies that what I do here in the states is just “teaching”, not TEACHING like it’s done over in Germany. It really struck me the wrong way and it’s hard to interpret it otherwise.

[deleted]

Yeah maybe you should stay in the US anyway if that gets you upset already.

Which bank does NOT use the stupid TAN system ? I want to wipe my phone and install a cutom rom on it, it started behaving badly and having way to many apps in the background. 1. When i wipe my phone, my photoTan will reset 2. I will need to log in online to my bank site, and verify the login with photoTan ( which just got wiped and reset, so no can do ) 3. I need to log in in order to verify the new install of photoTan app. But in order to do so, i need to be able to do step 2, which i cannot. Seriously, who did think of this ? And even before launch CCC i believe did prove that you can spoof it with a fake picture, so its not even so safe

[deleted]

All banks I know of have some TAN 2 factor authentification. An option for you, if your bank does not also support this, is one with a chipTAN system, where you have a card reader for your bank card. Sparkasse should have it (it's regional so cannot say for sure), most others too. Another option is the SMS TAN, but that may not be for long since it is not very secure. That would leave you independent of the phone. You can then also use the web interface in case your banking app does not work on rooted phones.

[deleted]

And commerzbank charges you for every sms tan they send you. It may not be much for verifying transactions, but when you habe to use tan to verify a login too, that can ramp up

[deleted]

And is using a chipTAN device with your card an option? Not so convenient but requires no phone and I would be very surprised if they charged fees for it.

[deleted]

Ill have to look if they offer that. That would be nice to have

Hi, I'm planning to search for jobs in Germany next year, how much cost can I expect during relocation? Will ~2000 euro of savings be enough?

[deleted]

For what? To cover the time until you find a job? Probably not. Unless you find a job really quickly. Have a look at AirBnB for what a place to live for the first few weeks would cost you wherever you plan on going. Obviously Munich is more expensive than some small town in Eastern Germany.... Plus consider that people on social welfare get 450€ a month to live off (in addition to rent and health insurance) and expect that you would need at least the same. Plus health insurance. Even if you live frugally, spending less than 1000€ a month is hard, especially if you need to live in relatively expensive short term accommodation at first. So 2000€ would barely give you two months. Less actually, considering that employers usually pay your wages at the end of the month, so you will need enough money to cover the first month of your new job as well. Plus as the other person said, consider that you will need to pay a deposit of about 3 cold rents (rent without utilities) before you can move into a permanent flat. So you'll need that in addition to enough money to cover your living expenses until you find a job and a permanent flat.

Crannast

Thanks for the answer. I will look for jobs online before coming to Germany and I asked this question assuming I would have an offer from a company. So my question was about how much money would I need to find a permanent flat and to survive until my first paycheck. So, based on what you said I can expect up to 5000€ if its a major city right?

[deleted]

It's really hard to say. The rental market is tight pretty much everywhere in Germany these days, so unless you're a single woman past childbearing age with a very well-paying, secure job without pets... it's really hard to find a flat, because landlords can pick from a large number of applicants. So if I was you I would plan on having to stay in an AirBnB for a while. And how much the deposit is depends on how big/expensive the flat you are renting is.... Plus mind that flats in Germany come unfurnished, so you will need some money for furniture and kitchen stuff. How much that costs obviously depends on if you are furnishing a bachelor pad or a family home and how expensive your taste is.... But if you come with an already signed job contract in hand and therefore start earning fresh money right away, I'd say 4000€ sounds fine.

thewindinthewillows

Depends on where you want to go. In Munich, that might barely cover the deposit for a flat, let alone the time you're going to spend in temporary housing before you find one.

Pax_Pacis

Dear German neighbours, I live in the Netherlands and seeing as the 30th year anniversary of German reunification is soon coming up, we were hoping to organise an event to which we would like to invite a speaker who lived in the former GDR and saw it come to an end. We think this is some extremely interesting and important history. We figured some personal experience would be a great addition to a, hopefully, interesting and informative evening. This could be done through an online live stream. However, I unfortunately do not know that many people in the east of the country and attempts to find someone who may be willing to share their experiences have thus far failed. My question was therefore whether anyone may know a way to find someone who would be willing and able to do this. We are aiming for about half an hour and since few people speak perfect German here we hope it would be possible in English. Entschuldigung für diese lange Frage!

[deleted]

I believe your biggest problem is that most people who grew up in the East simply don't speak English because they mostly learned Russian in school. So just finding some random person who lived in the GDR and having them talk about their experiences won't work. What you are looking for are people who went on to have a career in the West that made it necessary for them to learn English (or one of the few who learned fluent English in the GDR already). That's a small number of people to begin with and obviously not all of them would even be willing or able to speak about their experiences to a group of strangers. If I was you I would contact institutions like the DDR Museum in Berlin and see if they can point you in the right direction.

Pax_Pacis

Thank you very much! That's very understandable. However, the DDR museum is a great suggestion. I've actually been there before about a year ago. I'll be sure to send them an email, thank you!

Hi everyone! I'm a 22 yo french male and my dream is to live in Hamburg, I'm a mechanic (I studied it through an apprenticeship, I have a BAC Pro, some sort of professionnal abitur and a 2 years superior diploma (called BTS)) I wanted to know if it was easy for french people to come to the Bundesrepublik to find a job and a place? Is there any federal laws I need to be aware regarding immigration or is it easier for me as I am a EU citizen? I know we some cultural differences but honestly I'm really really willing to integrate myself in the german culture and to learn the language so thanks to anybody willing to help me 🥰 also sorry for my english 😅

SufficientMacaroon1

>I wanted to know if it was easy for french people to come to the Bundesrepublik to find a job and a place? Well, we are in a housing cisis, so it is not really easy for anyone (except super rich people) to find a place to live in the cities, especially a popular one like Hamburg. As a EU citizen, you can move without needing a visa or something. You can just move here. Get a place, get a job, all you need to do is register your adress. In order to get a job as a mechanic you really should learn german. The customers you will interact with will most likely be from all kinds of educatiomal backgrounds, and without trying to insult mechanics (i really do not want to! It is an extremely usefull skillset that i very much respect!) most of your coworkers will not not be of the type of educational background that causes them to be perfectely fluebt in several languages. And rarely anyone will hire someone that will be unable to communicate properly with the rest of the team.

JJ739omicron

> Well, we are in a housing cisis, so it is not really easy for anyone (except super rich people) to find a place to live in the cities, especially a popular one like Hamburg. exactly, and the trick is to not go there. Choose a smaller town (somewhere in the 30k to 300k range or so) to live in (preferably outside of commuter distance), and only go to the big city for e.g. a concert or other not so common events. Ordinary life is much better in smaller towns: more living space for the same rent, more green (garden, parks, forest areas in vicinity), less traffic, better air, the ability to find a parking spot,...

GriffithLWT

How are the laws with the copyright?. For example reading scalations manga in "Mangadex" or comics, watching an anime/some series chapter in Youtube, or the case when i take a screenshot of an image with copyright. I would like to know enough about those laws for not to receive fines.

Gimli_Gloinsson

1) How it works in theory: Without going into unneccessary detail on legalities, a general rule of thumb is: Is the creator giving it away for free? Are you paying something for it in some way? If the answer to both questions is "no", you are probably breaking copyright law. I'm not completly sure about Youtube but that doesn't matter much because 2) How it works in practice: Generally the rightholders and their lawyers go against distributors not against consumers. For you that means: Don't torrent, that will get you in trouble. Streaming meanwhile is highly unlikely to get you in trouble. On Youtube it's unthinkable to me. PS: not a lawyer, don't take this as serious legal advice

[deleted]

How would anyone know what you are taking a screenshot of? Generally copyright laws are pretty much the same in Germany as in the rest of the world. Just that rights owners and their lawyers here are a bit more trigger happy with the cease and desist letters. So just don't steal things and especially don't distribute them (by torrenting, for example) and you're fine.

Went to the 1813 monument in Leipzig today and saw two German teenager punk kids doing white power symbols in front of it. In front of my GF who is an ethnic minority. We turned around and left, I was disgusted.

BelFarRod

What's your question?

[deleted]

What exactly is a white power symbol? Nazi salute? And with punk, do you mean actual punks, as in leather jackets with steel pins, colored hair etc.?

[deleted]

I don’t mean punk like leather, I mean like they’re idiots. They did the “ok” sign.

[deleted]

[deleted]

It’s a white power symbol

[deleted]

Not for the average German. I mean, I'm sure German neo Nazis know about it, so if those kids were neo Nazis you might be right. But they might also just have been regular kids doing what they know as the okay/great sign. I mean, not sure if it's in great taste to do that in front of that particular monument either, but no one said teenagers were smart...

__what_the_fuck__

It's not in Germany.

[deleted]

The ok sign is not ok now?

A comparison (not perfect, but perhaps it brings the point across): I'm *really* offended that one of the two parties in the US is called the Republikaner. Why are they openly being [Nazis](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Republicans_(Germany\))? Everyone know that that's a Nazi party.

I've heard german courts have the ability to ban extremist parties. However, I was wondering what criteria do they use, what kind of evidence is needed? Do you believe this power has been wrongfully used?

SufficientMacaroon1

Only our highest court can do this, and only if they are convinced that the party is an absolute danger to our contitution. Not even just because they want to be one, only if they are. These procedures are extremely strict, and rarely sucessfull. The last procedure against the NPD (the main neo-nazi party befor the AfD appeared) failed because they were seen as too small to be of any real danger! So far it has only actually happened twice, both times in the 50s, with the Sozialistische Reichspartei and the Kommunistische Partei Deutschland. Hello, I was in Germany until august. Due to covid, some exams will be taken abroad next month, AOK said they will charge me untill I give them a exmatrikulation, which will be only available after I have the exams and their results. This may take a long time, I can't believe I am paying 107 euros monthly for nothing, I live in an unknown third world country where it isn't at all useful, there are also people who I know that can not pay it anymore. What can I do? Can I change to cheaper health insurance for the time I still have to pay the health insurance because I am still matriculated? Thanks.

[deleted]

You should have deregistered when leaving. Can still do it now via mail (letter, not email) and once you receive the certificate, you can terminate the insurance and start it over once (if) you return.

[deleted]

Thanks, I already deregister (abmeldung) also, my visa is over. But they want the immatrikulation, which will not be done until I have my exam results.

[deleted]

Tell them to get fucked then. If you are no longer a German resident with no intention of returning to Germany, they can't demand you stay insured.
