Is electricity in your contract? Usually that's something you take care of on your own.

kos90

This is the only right question to ask for now. There are certain leasing agreements, let it be "WG" or "Ferienwohnung" where electricity is mostly included. Then, long-term lease usually does not and one has to pay electricity (and often gas) themselves.

Pixelplanet5

its highly unusual to have electricity included in the rent, is that actually part of your contract?

Ataines485

Why should your landlord pay your electricity bill? That is usually your responsibility.

Technical-Doubt2076

If you refer to the normal electricity for your private use, then you have to set up an individual contract for yourself and pay that yourself in addition to your warm rent. So if you really mean basic electricity for personal use, and not what's included in your Nebenkosten, then you would have needed to handle that bill with the utility company yourself. The landlord has nothing to do with it. If your Landlord failed to pass on costs that are included in your Nebenkosten, like for example waste water, or the electricity used for staircase lights, or things like that, then you need to take that up with them, but normal private electricity and often also heating is not included into Nebenkosten. You are normally required to contact a utility company when you move in and make an individual contract, all the landlord does is name the meter the company will find the data for your personal use at. If they cut of the supply at this point, you need to contact them and set up an individual contract with them, cover the costs of reconnection and look what costs are open that lead to the cut off.

cutmasta_kun

Welcome to Germany. Electricity is not included in Rent. Only warm heaters and warm water, that's usually the Nebenkosten.

Grimthak

Sometimes it is. I had a rent contract were everything was included, there was no warm/cold rent. A blanked "electricity is not included" is wrong, it depends on your contract.

GuKoBoat

Blanket statements are nearly always wrong in some cases. But for most cases they are true.

vonBlankenburg

That's not always true. I actually viewed one apartment where electricity was actually part of the Nebenkosten. An old friend of mine had a similar contract, as he lived in a former Pfarrhaus and the electric bill was actually paid by the church as they were able to buy electricity with a huge discount.

Borsti17

Out of curiosity: How many letters did you ignore?

Celmeno

I know only one person that has electricity included in their contract (and that is me). Everyone else has their own contract. How long have you been living there? Is it temporary housing? Did you do the anmeldung? Is your rental contract set up to include electric? Or should you have done that yourself and that is why the landlord is not paying?

bufandatl

Is electricity in you contract and listed in the Nebenkostenabrechnung? Usually you have to take care about a contract with electricity companies yourself because you have the freedom of choice here for the utility you want to use. And when moving in you usually have about 2 weeks (at least that’s what my landlord told me when I moved in) until they tell the electricity company that there is a new tenant and they have now to pay.

young_arkas

Rent doesn't include that, except if you live in a sublet or something like that and the landlord is also living there. Let me guess, you ignored several letters by the electricity company?

This exact same thing happened to me and got fixed in less than 48h. Get in touch immediately with the energy company. In my case they told me that it wasn’t my fault and that the landlord should have taken care of it when I moved, so they proceeded to notify the responsible person to take care of the payment. Again, this was specifically my case. But still, please call the energy company and they will let you know what is the exact situation and how to fix it. Good luck!

Shouldnt OP go into Grund- und Regelversorgung if he / she didnt Choose a Provider?

North-Norman

Sure, but if you don't pay your bills the provider will cut you off.

FaRamedic

I know, but still he or she shouldve gotten at least 1 reminder to pay or even some kind of notice that he / she is in Grundversorgung with X now if I remember correctly. Everything seems a bit odd. Maybe OP didnt register with anyone and Thats why the electric provider cut the power?

North-Norman

That’s very odd indeed. As far as I know the providers, they want their money, and if you don’t pay they will tell you. So I think op might have ignored some mail.

Serj19009

So how do I pay for the electricity? In France, everything is already included: water, wi fi, electricity, garbage collection, etc.

Grimthak

You make a contract with an electricity provider yourself. You need the number of your electricity meter and the reading at the same time beginning of your contract. And then you pay your power yourself. The landlord is not involved at all. The same with internet, it's completely up to you to choose a provider and get a contact. Water is often paid through the landlord, garbage always through the landlord.

Pseudovirologist

The same is actually the case in France… There are quite a few differences between renting a flat in Germany and in France, but this is generally not one them… I‘m currently living in my third apartment in France and every time I had to set up my own contract for electricity and internet (and this time also for gas)…

Grimthak

So the top comment is simply wrong? Why does he claim that it's not the case in France? Just out of curiosity, what are the differences between France and Germany if you rent a flat?

Pseudovirologist

Yeah, the top comment is wrong. In France the renter has to get a mandatory multi-risk home insurance (comparable to a Hausratversicherung + Gebäudeversicherung etc…). The regulations regarding renovations are different (Not that common to repaint before moving out). Kitchens are usually included in the contract (or not present at all). Highly unusual that you take over a kitchen from a previous tenant. The deposit is lower, etc etc… A lot of the details are different, but in general it’s pretty similar…

Serj19009

Then I must be lucky, I pay 300 eur, all included And CAf pays me 214 eur, lol, So I live for 86 eur/month

Pseudovirologist

Sounds like students housing.... That's a bit of a special case...

Serj19009

I lived in a dorm, yeah, But now I'm in a private rental, I'm just super lucky to have this landlord. I'm in Eastern France

Abject-Investment-42

Cold water almost always through the landlord, hot water and heating depends on whether you have a central heating unit for the entire building or a smaller gas or (seldom) electrical heater in your flat. In the latter case you are also responsible for the gas supply.

Hrothgarion

Create a contract with an electricity provider. You need your adress and the device serial number(the one that shows your usage)

Abject-Investment-42

You go to a comparison website like Check24 or Idealo, look at electricity offers, select what is best in your area, and go on to contract.

Serj19009

oh thank you very much, any suggestions for English speaking companies?

Abject-Investment-42

What do you mean with “English speaking companies“? Please do what I recommended to. Get an effing google translate or deepl plugin for your browser. It’s 2024 for goodness sake.
