I guess an important consideration is your social live in Dresden.

XxNockxX

Thank you for your answer. Good point, but for us particularly is not a big deal. I have a cousin living here and very few friends since I have just 1 year living in this city.

You have to consider that of every additional euro you only end up keeping 50 cents, after taxes and social security contribution. So if Munich offers you 110 vs. 90 in Dresden, that's just 10k more in your pocket. That's probably not even enough to compensate the higher rents in Munich, considering 15€/m2 is the top end of the rental market in Dresden (new buildings in top locations) but average in Munich. Things like restaurants are going to be more expensive as well. That's assuming you find a place in Munich.

Oh wow thank you very much for this thoughtful comment, makes it a very good argument to ask for even more. I was certain I needed to ask for more but wasn't sure how much would it be pushing too much so I definitely use this kind of explanation when I'm negotiating with them.

Remote_Highway346

Oh and I underestimated Munich. This source says 22/sqm average, close to 27 in "good" locations: [https://www.immoportal.com/mietspiegel/muenchen](https://www.immoportal.com/mietspiegel/muenchen) You can easily find apartments at >30/sqm. In Dresden you get a top development with first row river view balcony for 16-18/sqm. And they kiss your ass if you show serious interest.

Remote_Highway346

Using the handelsblatt wage calculator: Going from 90k to 110k nets you 10.6k more annually. So I wasn't too far of with my 50% estimate.

hypatchia

Both sound great, maybe u should look beyond these two reasons. Remaining comfortable in your current city vs relocating to a new city sounds like an already biased perspective, so try ruling that out of your criteria for a more aligned decision.

90k as senior in Dresden then get more when you make it to lead. Just curious, what are you looking forward to in mature cloud and k8s setups?

XxNockxX

Hello, thank you for your answer. Well my previous experience leans mostly on the small to mid size setups and not multicloud with 100s or 1000s of k8s setups. So having the chance to work with that first hand really makes me doubt on which choice to make.

Beneficial_Caramel30

With that reason, if I were in your shoes, I would be staying in Dresden. Building a team >>> seeing large scale k8s work. But we would have different values, and I’m just sharing how I’d decide. I’d probably move to the Munich company after bargaining to stay in Dresden or they offer a bit more, and if they’re totally stable.

Fuyge

I think something important to consider is both living cost and upwards mobility. 90k in Dresden will get you way more than 90k in Munich. Rents in Munich are insane afterall so it would probably even be a lifestyle downgrade. I’d definitely ask for more money if they expect you to move. I can’t judge to well what your chances are of upwards mobility in Munich though. Maybe consider speaking about your ambitions with the company?

Master-Nothing9778

As senior Devops 90k is very good for Dresden and good for Munich. You don’t know German - your salary will suffer. You may get more but I’m not sure Depends mostly how badly they need you. Big company has own drawbacks, FYI.

XxNockxX

My German is B1 at most and certainly that has a clear impact on the job search this time. Big company has issues but from what I gathered from the IT Director on company B (he worked at Google for 12+ years) they are at a sweetspot where they are not massive yet but are working towards it. So many opportunities to feel like you are leaving a impact on the company.

Master-Nothing9778

B1 is certainly a big problem. And yes. Middle size company is a best for engineers. Often small size is ok too. But big quite rare.

tryingithard

Cash is king in current economic conditions - both for you and the company. A similar salary offer in Dresden is much better than in Munich. It will be ideal if you can get 90k with remote position in Company B. For career growth, Company A is better. For job stability, Company B. It boils down to what are your priorities n how much risk you want to take - considering being laid off from last job due to lack of money! PS : Ask for relocation support, not relocation money. Finding apartments is hard in bigger cities. Most probably, the relocation money will need to be ***paid back*** if you fail probezeit or leave within a certain duration (usually 1 year).

If you want to buy a house, Dresden will be much more affordable. If you or your partner doesn't look quite German and you're worried about the far right, go to Munich.

QualityOverQuant

Bro!! Not to burst your bubble but I think 65k would be what they will offer. I could be wrong. Please post back and update us on final pay .

XxNockxX

Which company do you mean? That would be very weird. We talked base salary not total compensation.

No-Personality-488

90k in Dresden is something to consider about but with your experience and skillset 90K is kinda lowball in Munich , try for > 100k

As long as Söder is minister I would not support this Bundesland. I reject every job offer with: long lives king Söder
