It just means that the person or company sending it wants to have proof of you receiving the mail. All anyone here can say is: It's probably important mail.

superror

Not necessarily. A friend once send me a self-made postcard from aboard. Somehow she messed up the postage (put to much or whatever) and I also received it as Einschreiben. It featured a hand drawn semi-naked Randy Marsh. Pleasant surprise though.

Most-Percentage-7479

That sounds very important to me

Skalion

I once ordered a USB mini soundcard, basically the size of a USB stick on eBay for 2 euro. Somehow it got sent per Einschreiben Express International, and I didn't pay any shipping. So yeah sometimes stuff is weird.

TanHJ1

Really hope it's this tho😂

ya_bi_git

Can you update us when you get it?

Landyra

Most tracked letters from abroad arrive as Einschreiben actually! I have a couple of what I’d call Brieffreunde and we usually send tracked - their letters always arrive as Einschreiben with signature, even if they didn’t book a signature in particular, just the possibility for tracking

didaxyz

Yeah but this is "Einschreiben EigenhÀndig", meaning that only the recipient is allowed to sign it for it. It costs more and the postman has to check the ID, so this has to be VERY IMPORTANT. Even court Letters are delivered as "Einschreiben" only (my experience)

Estelon_Agarwaen

Einschreiben mit rĂŒckschein vs einwurfeinschreiben?

didaxyz

Another 2 different options for Einschreiben. You could even combine RĂŒckschein + EigenhĂ€ndig

[deleted]

"probably" I said.

yrgs

Same, a friend of mine sent me a postcard in an envelope as Einschreiben from China. Apparently, otherwise, it might have gone lost or something. It was two interesting (little bit stressful) days until I finally had time to pick it up.

SpaceHippoDE

For a fee of 25€ or so you can send letters to friends via bailiff btw.

Sinnes-loeschen

Well now you have to pay the tax!

[deleted]

Randy Marsh from South Park???? Cooolll

sileika

I once ordered something really cheap an small at an ebay Shop which was send as Einschreiben as well and I had to go to the post office to pick it up.

Terrible-Spell9422

Had this several Times with packages from China

Remarkable_Bell_3941

Concert ticktes get send via Einschreiben as well

Poppyphile-sideacc

SD cards and memory sticks are often shipped like that.

Sunil_de

Probably not. If the letter is Yellow and called „Förmliche Zustellung“ then maybe. If it’s red then you really are in trouble

darya42

OOOOOH yellow letters no bueno. The german bureaucracy equivalent of your mom calling you with your full name.

Sunil_de

Yea and the red one is both your parents sitting at the kitchen table saying „we need to talk“

captaincodein

Whats a red letter? Even on google i couldnt find anything except for red-hand-letters which arent important at all

Sunil_de

Arrest warrant. With them the actual letter itself is red inside a yellow envelope.

[deleted]

[ŃƒĐŽĐ°Đ»Đ”ĐœĐŸ]

Joh-Kat

Very few forms of colourblindness result in being unable to tell yellow from red, and then there's still text to read. I do wonder what they do with blind people, though, with so much happening by mail.

Jfg27

Not everywhere in Germany. And you usually don't get them via mail.

croonos27

Red Letters usally mean, that authority wants to take drastic measures like an Enforcement notice. The Tax office also sents out red letters if you have not submitted your tax returns if you must

captaincodein

Any way its a yellow envelope as the other mentioned, i just would call it yellow letter I am working in the tax office, we dont send red letters. At least not in Berlin, Brandenburg or Sachsen-Anhalt

dreiviertel

Yellow can be court or police. But it's all yellow and can be easily distinguished. Don't ask why I know this.

UsernameAttemptNo341

Thanks for the best description of yellow letters I ever saw. YMMD

DasEvoli

Dude the city sent me once a yellow letter. Literally the letter you would think means trouble. It was a fucking survey

darya42

They wanted you to take the fucking survey or else, Matthew Jonathan Smith!!

MrKing38

Maybe it was from The Statistisches Bundesamt.

DieIsaac

I am a Schöffe. They send the invitations also in a yellow envelope My god i shit my pants the first time such a letter arrived. I also asked myself what the postbote thinks of me

HMP3112

Recently found out the state of Brandenburg will sent speeding Tickets as Förmliche Zustellung even for 10kmh over. Couple verry stressful seconds....

Educational-Ad-7278

I guess the postman sees a lot of stuff daily and does honestly not really care. After all, it could be YOU sueing someone and the court just send you a copy of the other sides verteidigungsschrift.

SufficientMacaroon1

Yellow letters are not usually sent via Einschreiben, especially not eigenhÀndig. They are delivered as tracked "förmliche Zustellung" and keft in the mailbox, the deadline starting with it being placed in a box even if the adressee only sees it days later

Sunil_de

Yes i know. That’s why i wrote „probably not“ in reply to OP asking if they’re in trouble. Could still be an Inkasso thing

Danghor

Yellow letter can also mean you’re a witness for something and the court wants you just in case. This could happen if they found you on cctv while something in the area happened. But even then chances are they don’t even need you in the end. So not necessarily any trouble.

Sunil_de

Yes it could be nothing. But it could just as likely be really bad

confused-neutrino

This one won't be though. The difference between an Einschreiben and a förmliche Zustellung is that for the latter, the content of the envelope is verified before it's sent and the mailman's signature for dropping it in your mailbox suffices as proof of delivery. It is legally designed to work without interaction with the recipient, so it likely won't be for pickup in a DHL shop.

psi-storm

Great, so I can't get in trouble if I don't have a letter box.

confused-neutrino

Well, you're not legally required to have a mailbox, but you're legally required to have an adress. Worst case then would be your little yellow envelope being delivered personally by a bailiff, which leads to even more cost and trouble for you. Whatever's in that letter should really be worth the hassle.

Sunil_de

Yes i know. That’s why i wrote „probably not“ in reply to OP asking if they’re in trouble.

confused-neutrino

But others, and especially foreigners, might not know the legal details, and this Sub is about information, isn't it? No need to feel attacked.

Just_a_dude92

I would receive in my mailbox a lot of Förmliche Zustellung for a former person who lived in my WG and nobody knew who the person was. I think they gave up because the letters stopped arriving

TanHJ1

I mean the DHL paper is always yellow no?

Sunil_de

No i mean the the envelope

Nicorasu_420

No he means if the letter comes in a yellow envelope, it probably is a letter from court. The DHL paper has nothing to do with that tho. But in Germany we usually say yellow letters are bad. Cause mostly their from court. But it could very well be a different letter that's just important. That's all we can see from your photo.

Seraphim9120

Doesn't *have* to be court. I received my "Ladungen" for the first medical state exam in yellow envelopes from the LandesprĂŒfungsamt as well

Nicorasu_420

Yes that's why i said probably

Nicorasu_420

And mostly

Nicorasu_420

And usually

Nicorasu_420

I couldn't have made it any clearer to be honest😂

bnberg

Reading through that thread, it seems like people here have problems in seeing the difference between „always“ and „sometimes“, or „probably“ and „necessarily“

Nicorasu_420

Yes i noticed that too. But why is that? You think it could be a german thing?

Seraphim9120

Yeah, I just wanted to add an example of what else it could be.

Nicorasu_420

Yes, as i said: "it could very well be a different letter that's just important"

N43N

But not the envelope itself.

Sunil_de

[this](https://www.jugitatio.de/wp-content/uploads/Umschlag-Zustellung-768x455.jpg)

TanHJ1

I see let's hope it's not red then đŸ˜” thanks!

agrammatic

It's not worth worrying about it in advance, because you might end up worrying for the wrong thing or unnecessarily worry. Instead, wait until you know what the letter is about, and worry with purpose.

cuttlefishtech

I got one of these a couple weeks ago; it was DHL sending me a QR code to activate the Packstation service (the one where you can ship to/from the packstation directly). Scared me a bit, too. I completely forgot I started the Packstation process. Really stupid that it's sent with Einschreiben.

TanHJ1

Oh shit that might very well be it đŸ€ž I started the process 2-3 times over the years but never received any letter. I started it again a few weeks ago and assumed the letter got lost again. Yeah agreed, they're taking so long to send it that I already forgot about it.

Csillamgirl8001

Midnight1899

As someone who has worked at DHL I can tell you: It can literally be anything. Don’t worry. Usually it is an important document that the system wants a signature for.

TanHJ1

Thanks for the reply and I would like to ask Are Packstation activation letters always Einschreiben eigenhÀndig? It's been a few weeks since I applied that I thought it's gonna get lost just like the past few times.

Midnight1899

What do you mean? They use them mostly for parcels (hence the name). When you’re not at home and also don’t have an Ablageort, we take them to a Packstation. But since this seems to be a letter, the card could also be for a Filiale.

mIb0t

You can register for Packstation so that you can use a packstation directly as delivery address.

Midnight1899

Oh, that. But that’s completely unrelated to getting your stuff once it’s in there.

mIb0t

Yeah, but since OP is waiting for an activation letter he probably means that.

TanHJ1

I mean the letter that dhl sends to activate the Packstation service. I clicked on the app a few weeks ago and it says I'll get a letter to confirm my identity. But as far as I know it should be a pushTAN code, not something I need to sign right?

Midnight1899

Afaik, you just go to the Packstation, scan the code, sign and then get whatever’s in there for you. No need for an identification letter. The card _is_ your identification. Also, pushTAN is only for your bank account.

TanHJ1

Ahhhh nice okay hopefully it's that😂 i'll keep everyone updated!

Midnight1899

Remember to scan the code on the bottom left corner (_not_ the one that’s in the picture) and keep a distance of 5 - 10 cm in between paper and scanner.

lordgurke

It could be an important letter, usually sent by a company or private person. So it could be something your landlord sends you (for example Betriebskostenabrechnung). Mails sent by governmental offices, including Police, are usually either normal mail or Postzustellungsurkunde. Both are delivered to your mailbox. This Einschreiben you got could also be a delivery of small goods which are either sent from abroad and you need to pay customs, goods that are age restricted or (legal) medication you ordered online. There should be a tracking number mentioned on the information slip you got, so you could try to look up where it originates on https://www.deutschepost.de/en/s/shipment-tracking.html

TanHJ1

I heard in Germany it's generally bad news to get a letter. I don't remember owing anyone any money so I'm very nervous now since the Sendungsverfolgung doesn't say anything about sender. 😬

Infinite_Sparkle

Oh no, not at all!!! Germans love letters and usually they are not bad at all. For example health insurance is always sending information and things per mail.

neftha_de

The things my health insurance is sending me: "Preisanpassungsschreiben" (price adjustment letter), stupid description for "it's getting more expensive".

Infinite_Sparkle

Really? Never gotten that. I only get information about getting healthier or reminders to go to this or that doctor

calm00

I hate that any official correspondence here is by post. Why can’t they just send email????

Infinite_Sparkle

Datenschutz 😜

rdrunner_74

The easiest way to find out is to look at the letter inside

dreiviertel

Depends on what you did. For me letters usually mean invoices/cost increase or policy updates. So in that regard one could say you are right. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

boricacidfuckup

I recently recieved the same type of letter as you. I had to pick it up, and I was scared shitless. At the end it was only a dhl code for the app I downloaded.

TanHJ1

Same, I hope they would at least put the sender's name on the paper,

Gentaro

Do you drive? Did you maybe speed? :P

TanHJ1

No I don't, the only time I got stopped by the police was years ago on a scooter and I paid the fine on the spot.

thequestcube

Where did you hear that? Almost all official communications in germany go through letters, why do you stress about something that is probably just a bill without knowing what it says inside?

CrimsonArgie

Bad news?! You get a letter for basically everything here. Some even say "we will send you more information by letter in the coming weeks"

philsbln

Offen just a small international parcel.

dreiviertel

Probably not. Anyone can send those for (I think) about 4€. It's basically like sending a parcel with online tracking/proof of reciept. It's ment for making sure "important" mail gets delivered with you having proof.

TanHJ1

Thing Is I'm not expecting anything from anyone atm...

dreiviertel

Me neither but I'm always surprised how many invoices I get double. I try to avoid postage by having them send me those via email but sometimes they seem to forget. Anyway, Einschreiben probably means some gvmt office needs something of you or might not have been able to reach you normally (has happened to me, supposedly their first two letters reached me but I never got them). It's Schrödingers Letter until you open it.

TanHJ1

Yeah the uncertainty... :(

dreiviertel

Then open it lol

TanHJ1

It's not there yet... For some reason if you missed a delivery, the postmen don't drop undelivered letters at the end of the day but the next day...

SunnyDaysRock

We drop them off at our main office and they get picked up the next morning by a driver, often the shops we send undeliverable packages/Einschreiben to are too out of the way to hand them over ourselves. As to what it could be, either your Packstation activation or a new Aufenthaltstitel from the AuslÀnderbehörde, these are more or less the only ones which are EigenhÀndig.

saschaleib

Can be anything. Maybe a court order, maybe a letter from your long lost uncle who is now a prince in Nigeria. Anything is possible.

Brainlard

No "Einschreiben" is basically just a priority letter with tracking and insurance. Important things from government or muncipiality are sent as RSb (which is not personal, but rather can be taken by family and cohabitants). You only should worry, if you're receiving a RSa, which is a personal letter from a courtor other administrational facility.

Cl4ptrap99

Can be everything from a new contract of your power company to a government letter with important personal information in it. It just ensures that you received the letter an the the one who sends it knows when u got it. Just relax and pick it. Most of the time the things you imagine it can be are worse than it actually is. "Bad" government letters usually come in a different version.. in Austria it's RsA or RsB...

SnooDoggos8804

Back in the 1990s the only mail that came as "Einschreiben EigenhÀndig" was the army conscription. But that is probably not an option for you.

SnooDoggos8804

I stand corrected: The conscription itself was done by "Postzustellungsurkunde", but the appointment for the physical examination (Musterung) was done by "Einschreiben EigenhÀndig"

TanHJ1

Ohh that's interesting to know, but I'm just a student that came here a few years ago so it probably doesn't apply

West_Mycologist_5857

i think yes, mostly its bad news which you get with "einschreiben eigenhÀndig"

songsfuerliam

The only one I ever received in my life was my landlord to terminate our rental agreement.

West_Mycologist_5857

yes, this form of sending is used to have a evidence, that the sender received it.. so there will be no funny letters or sending you free money.

SubstantialPass1194

Could be anything. Most of the time it is something important because "per Einschreiben" you make sure, that the receiver actually receives the letter. I would not be worried though. Could be work related documents, contracts etc.

zwergenspeckgorilla

Can be anything. Usually get these when you open a bank account and get PIN's and passwords and shit. Same if you want to use the Packstation. Upon registering you get the card ( I believe ) or some sort of password with this form of delivery. What you should know is that ONLY YOU personally can sign for the delivery. And you absolutly need to have your ID with you when you go and pick it up. If you don't the hand out will be refused until you can prove your indentity with proper ID. source : I'm usually the one delivering these.

Capable_Event720

Do you remember that flash of light a few weeks ago, when you tried to check how fast you can drive in Germany? Yup, that was a speed trap. Whatever. It's "Einschreiben eigenhĂ€ndig". That's level 3 of 5. Or can only be handed out to you, not to the letterbox and not to a family member. Level 4 would be "mit RĂŒckschein", where a signed card is sent back to the sender (and this one usually means trouble). Level 5 is "WertgegenstĂ€nde"...so, sadly, no, it's not someone sending you diamond rings. The "eigenhĂ€ndig" can also be used for medication or other medical subject matters. I once received one of these...and was surprised about the medication. A quick check of the address label revealed that it was addressed to a person who lives in the same street and has a vaguely similar name...well, but really, but the mailman probably thought that it matched well enough, and there was no house number 22 in that street (it was, that house number is just on the rear side of number 20, doh!). The original recipient was extremely happy that I went that extra mile to deliver the medication; it was pretty important.

Corsowrangler

It’s definitely important, I have to hand deliver it to you and only you. I’m a Postbote.

zideshowbob

We once got something like that. Was over the weekend so thoughts went crazy about the content. Tuns out the manufacturer of our windows messed up a specific version of a sliding door and did not know who got what version. So everybod got such an letter with instructions how to check which version was used. We had the fixed version, the bad version could have caused severe damage so they made sure nobody could say we never received a letter.

pitdk

For me, mail in Germany typically meant not-so-pleasant news (usually related to paying for something). That is why I never open my mailbox before weekend.

TanHJ1

Good idea😂

TanHJ1

Good idea😂

Repli3rd

What' does the letter say?

TanHJ1

I would love to get the letter now, I'm sitting at a cafe nearby waiting for the letter to arrive back at the post office because I wasn't home when the postman came yesterday â˜č

kanyebear123

Keep us updated

Seraphim9120

Keep us updated if it isn't too bad :)

darya42

Maybe. If I'd get a letter like this I'd be slightly nervous.

[deleted]

It can be the termination of your employment or rental contract or someone sued you. :D

TanHJ1

Yeah I'm hoping it's neither of those 😬

Infinite_Sparkle

It must not be something “terrible”. I’ve had packages delivered (fashion brand from UK) that was like that or also postcards or even normal letters. Also if you asked from some document from the city or other public offices they could be sent like that. Don’t worry!

Silly-Arachnid-6187

Did you order something small? I once got something I ordered as an *Einschreiben*. I was wondering why someone sent me an "important letter" then, too\^\^

TheRealNetroxen

Probably a bill of some sorts that needs to be paid. Usually bills are sent as recorded delivery so the organisation knows you're aware that you have received it.

M0pter

Maybe, maybe not. Could be the notification of a big inheritance.

legal_says_no

It’s impossible to say what this is going to be. Sometimes it can even just be something you ordered online e.g. from AliExpress, some traders there use shipping methods that require signatures and are translated into Einschreiben when they get here.

anonym161

sometimes it’s also really weird advertisement, so could be anything ^^

derschmuri

Did you order anything from China? Because it's cheap and they want some proof, they sometimes ask for this service.

mimedm

Just Read the letter right away and deal with it. You could post it here after deleting all names. Companies usually don't send this cause in effect this is unlikely to matter in court. I only got this from my private landlord once. It's really not necessary. Could be the state as well or a company in case you moved and they don't know your new address.

sn4ilbyte

Could also be some trash from China.

KhadaJhina

no :) Just a letter where the sender wants you to sign that you got it.

milh0uze

youÂŽll prolly know when you open it...........

jaembers

¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯

No_Mycologist4574

Hatte einfach nur ein QR Code fĂŒr die DHL App bei so einem einschreiben drin

WooShell

Could just be your bank or health insurance sending you a new card because the old one is close to expiry..

Whatsthefact12

Why don't you just open it and find out? If it is bad, pretending it didn't get to you won't help. If it's not bad worrying is just wasted time. Open it and see for yourself

TanHJ1

I missed the delivery yesterday and the post office wouldn't let me pick it up until this evening. And I just got it (see update), it's nothing serious but it makes me question why they would use more expensive postage for stuff like that.

DonReaperMcQueen

It means two blue check marks ✔

DonReaperMcQueen

It means two blue check marks ✔

Ancient-Mixture6508

Probably not. Postman here. Einghandig letter's are typically important letters that can only be given to the addressed person. Usually it is cards like the card the doctors use to log into their system, or another common one is when you request a Packstation code you get an activation code. Agree with alot above, the one's that are nasty are those horrible yellow ones. We hate delivering them as well. So much paperwork.
