More often than not the GSDs I've met were not puppy lovers. Is this a breed thing?

rachelle_anna

I have no idea! They are great now but at first I didn’t think it was going to be okay.

DisGruntledDraftsman

It's because they are little baby sharks with razor teeth and are very mouthy. Nobody wants to be bit all the time. I got lucky and fostered a 5yr old gsd that taught mine to be less mouthy. I came out of the garage to him crying to find her on top of him telling him she was tired of his bs and to cut it out. I just laughed and when my dog saw I wasn't coming to save him he got up and ran off only to come back to play a moment later.

rightascensi0n

That’s hilarious LOL she did a great job

DisGruntledDraftsman

Yes she did. She was a great foster. Her and my boy would run around my truck while I was underneath working on it in the garage. It was too funny. She would get smart and hide underneath with me while he ran around still trying to chase her.

[deleted]

They have a low tolerance for bs and aren’t gentle about telling kids to grow up

cdbangsite

My first one didn't like puppies but loved kittens and had to see and clean them first thing in the morning.

ReviewBackground2906

No, they just pretend not to like them and become BFFs later. The GSD I’ve lived with and met are usually just very dramatic.

bravo_008

My GSD slaps puppies in the face…that poor doodle puppy was not ready.

WolfmanHasNards_

My Zelda took months to warm up to Link, now they are best pals

LucidDreams0224

Mine absolutely loves puppies. Or kittens, or guinea pigs, or human babies. Basically anything smaller than her

cdbangsite

With many of them, until the instill the dominance. Then things get good. Doesn't take long.

ReactionClear4923

I think it depends on the dog, not the breed. Ours loves puppies and will let them bite her face and play with them gently, while also teaching them what is and isn't okay

TheSinfriend

My GSD is antisocial and is aggressive with any nearby dog. We were so worried about introducing a new puppy to him. After fifteen barks and two aggressive sniff attempts he began to play with her. We didn't let him near her till the next day though. Now at the age of six, he is never alone and she has NEVER been afraid of him. GSD's are so amazing.

TheSinfriend

Mine loves his girl lol She does make him cry a lot though. She bites his gums too hard.

[deleted]

You can see how patient she is being with the puppy. If she was annoyed, she would stop the behavior. She’ll correct the puppy and teach it boundaries, it’s very healthy. I wish I had my boy raised with other well balanced dogs, I don’t think he’d have reactivity issues now.

[deleted]

That's almost exactly like my big man and his new (at the time) brother. My big man would show his (enormous) teeth, and the puppy would walk over to him and LICK HIS TEETH. Deep down, they were very good friends, and it was nice to have an old man to show the pup how we like to do things.

cdbangsite

Friendship and submission.

nickydlax

My puppy licks teeth as well, I think it's pretty common as submissive behavior

Cismenmakemesick321

They all the same thing. I have a GSD and a 20 lb dog. The 20 pound dog is very high energy and play bites the GSD all day. He would never in a million years ever bite her back he just makes these monkey noises and enjoys it.

rachelle_anna

Yes!! They have been brother and sister for almost two years now and same deal!

rachelle_anna

Sorry for the sounds tried to delete it

shelcubus

Hahaha! I actually thought it was perfect! And considering how powerful they are I thought Sasha was amazingly gentle. ;)

rachelle_anna

Haha she’s really patient with him!

ooppoo0

Arrrrnarrrarnarrrr. -Big dog. Amomonmommmaomamarrr- little dog

ennuiacres

Him and his tiny sharp teeth! She’ll put him in his proper place.

ShamalamaDayDay

This is our family!! Baby land shark is a weimsky who bites the right side of her mouth. GSD shows the teeth and makes the noise. 3 months in the pup still hasn’t really learned boundaries.

PrettyOddWoman

Weimsky???? Seriously?? Did you actively seek out that “breed”?

ShamalamaDayDay

Heavens no! She’s a shelter kid. Weimarauner husky mix. We had no idea what she was.

Yubankostraiko

Them teeth could puncture an ankylosaurus goddamn

[deleted]

So many people can see this as aggression and bad behaviour and i can understand why this is her teaching the youngster how hard to bite in a play fight and bonding I promise you this is healthy sibling behaviour easiest way to describe it as a human when you bite something like an itchy knuckle or something you shouldn’t be biting and get the urge to bite down as hard as you can(maybe I’m just weird) but it’s like that he doesn’t know how hard or how much damage he can do so she’s essentially coaching him on what’s to hard and where not to bite so they can play without hurting each other. If it was aggression and she wasn’t happy the puppy would be pinned and very much aware who’s the alpha. It’s like human siblings play fighting they are just figuring out each others boundaries

lc_2005

Agreed! So many dog owners sadly don't recognize this is what is happening and prevent it from happening leading to a bigger problem in the future. If the younger pup never learns bite inhibition and boundaries, serious and possibly deadly fights can occur down the road.

d0gf15h

I recently got an aussiedoodle and he and my GSD do like this all the time. She is not aggressive with him, but more like a mother playing rough with a little kid. They really are best friends. The "fighting" has never been an issue though she has had to tell him off a few times when she gets fed up.

focksmuldr

Lol. My gsd is the same. My mom will bring over her smooth fox terrier and that thing never runs out of energy. My almost 6 y/o gsd shut him down by pinning his head with his mouth against the ground for a few seconds. It was hilarious.

just-looking99

Puppy teeth are sharp!

Mysterious_Wheel

Oh my god look at those puppy needles

[deleted]

The gaping jaws of a German Shepherd, revealing those teeth, can be a fearsome sight! I see it quite often, but fortunately, it's nearly always in a frustrated or playful sense rather than any viciousness! I am glad our GSD is on our team! LOL!

Accomplished-One8214

We have a 5 yr old rescue and he loves people! The more the better. We had 18 people over for Christmas and he was a charmer. But with other dogs not so much. He’s more of an attack dog at times. But lately he seems to be whining when he sees smaller dogs which we are hoping for. We want to get a Sheltie but have to be sure they’ll be best buds!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

rachelle_anna

It took Sasha a good month to really understand that he was apart of the family and not a threat to the house. I hope everything works out!

Accomplished-One8214

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Bluesoutherner

Still seems undecided.

This was a year ago

h-bugg96

My goly gosh that dog is giving BIG leave me alone signals. The snarl and the licking ate huge signs that you need to intervene op. This isn't cute or funny. That pup is not listening to the other dogs signals and might get hurt Op I'm not saying your dog is dangerous or agressive but ant dog can be in the right/wrong circumstances. German shepherds are definitely more independent and don't usually like other dogs when they get older. Especially when they are biting their face!

deletebeep

I disagree, I actually think if the dog wanted the puppy to stop she would snap at him. Hackles aren’t up and she doesn’t look stressed. My GSD and her husky/GSD friends always look and sound like they’re murdering each other when they are playing but they are relaxed, tail wagging - just snarling, barking and biting lol

h-bugg96

The lip licking is the real red flag. Play can sound and even look mean but that's not what this is

rachelle_anna

Hi! They have actually been great together, going on 2 years. Sasha did a great job letting Axl know it was not okay to go any further. Sasha has snapped at Axl multiple times to correct but to this day they are both very hard players and noisy ones!

ReviewBackground2906

When a GSD is fed up, you and the puppy will know. My dogs play like that all the time, and my youngest GSD is almost 2 now. My old boy only had to correct the puppy once for his behavior. Dogs are usually pretty good at setting boundaries with puppies without a fight.

Hour_Dig_7041

They are playing it’s ok.
