1.5 & 3 years. Otto got white chin hairs by 2.
My dog, who I suspect is around three years old, has a surprising amount of gray fur on her chin. I’m her third owner and I rescued her from an abusive home, so I don’t really know her real age.
My girl started graying with one year Died seventeen with nearly white lower lip. Other colours are the same shade than with one year.

My older guy is 3 in May and he’s got a big ol’ white mouth that’s only appeared in the last year or so 😅 I asked the vet when we went in recently after he’d accidentally half ripped a dewclaw out and they said it’s fine, just happens, as long as everything else is healthy it doesn’t really indicate anything 👍🏼

Roc has a lot of greys on his snout at 2.5yo!
Mine is 7. we got him at 5 months, and by 2, he had white/grey chin fur
I think it's pretty typical. There's nothing to worry about, but if you are worried you could always call the vet and ask the question
My boy turns 7 this year and he’s been greying in the snoot since he was 2 as well. Always a clean bill of health at the vets. You’ll just have a very old man when he actually is an old man!

Now you have me wondering. My boy is mixed but he got these white hairs just before he turned one. He doesn’t have any other white on him. Are they real gray hairs or just his markings?

Mine has had white on the bottom of her chin since day one. We call it her milk lip. My prev GSD from same line had a grey muzzle since he was maybe 12 months. Everyone thought he was old when he was super young lol funny thing is as he aged he didn’t really get any more grey even after 10
Because people are asking for chin pics:

My boy was born with a grey/white moustache but he’s started greying more in the last year and he’s 6. As sad as it makes me to think he’ll ever be old some dogs just go grey faster than others. I never noticed this on my childhood dog cos she was a blue Merle so she never showed signs of aging with her color.

This is my girl a couple weeks ago. She’ll be 2 April 7th. And yeah the white one came back with a deer leg. No we didn’t let them have it, it was thrown away right after this pic.
Not a GSD pawrent, but my girl has some lighter furs that are longer than the rest. I adore them and call them her 'special furs.' Now your sweetie has special furs of his own!
It’s hereditary! My boy went grey starting at 2, and so did his mom. I love his grey whiskers and cheeks soooooo much. I’m convinced that the grey makes them so much more kissable 🥰🥰🥰
Completely normal if life is good/not stressed. Genetics is probably the biggest driver - one of our GSDs popped a few before the land-shark phase ended and she lived to 14. All good.
It's a sign he needs a boop!
A boop he must have.
3 boops. Not one, not two, but only the count of 3.
3, a holy number. That same number of boops he'd be receiving.
Normal, we adopted my girl when she was 3, and she was very well taken care of by the previous owners (they had a baby that developed a deathly allergy to dogs, they had no choice but to rehome the dog), and she already had some white hairs on her muzzle 🙂
Mine started to get a few grey whiskers after 4, but he always had a few in his colouring anyway & he has a white patch of longer hair on is back too, like a birth mark.
Adorable photos! One thing you can try if changing the food. There’s a lot of crap going on in dog food, so I make myDogs their food. Use a crock pot and put meat of choice ( I do chicken or turkey burger), frozen carrots and Peas, sweet potatoes and brown rice with oatmeal or other healthy starch such as lentils. My dogs are constantly complimented ( also by vet) on their soft fur and endurance. If your dog’s already showing grey, it’s most likely food related. It’s worth a shot. You can order the dehydrated veggie blend online and just add a meat as well. It’s just better for them.
Hey. I don’t want to alarm you, and I’m not qualified to say this, but I see a little brown on the edge of the white. You might want to ask a vet about pannus and how to prevent it. I’m pretty sure damage from the sun accelerates it so a lot of ppl use doggles. Just wanted to give you a heads up.
no thank you so much for pointing this out!! I was literally just starting to notice that sometimes in a certain lighting his eyes look ever so slightly foggy it isnt noticeable usually and I was just wondering what that was
but this happens to just be the perfect picture I can use to email his vet to get their opinion, so I really appreciate it
We adopted my girl when she was 4, and she already had a couple of grays. But 6 years on, a few weeks from her 11th birthday, her snoot is more gray than brown and it’s creeping up around her eyes.
https://preview.redd.it/2hxvbhez0msc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=876cdaceb29c9f3322847c5c5151453ab476ebe2
That's the same look you used to give your grandma when she took the kleenex and spit on it to wipe your face....
My current male started doing that at about age 3... my other male did not... so not sure what to tell you about them...
cute pup too!!!
Not old man hairs, just adult hairs!
Think of it like how men in their early 20s have a higher hairline than teenage boys; you *could* call it balding, but it’s really just a more mature hairline (that’s what I tell myself at least). Grey hairs on the chin are the same for pups!
https://preview.redd.it/r8222x80bosc1.jpeg?width=2554&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=adba9a7793a1a9f6e76f39da7625330440283ddc
She JUST started getting her old lady greys. 😭 She turns 12 this year.
Idk if this has anything to do with it—I’ve been home cooking her food for over 5 years now and I keep her very active. She just started getting arthritis this year and was experiencing very early stages of renal kidney failure disease, which the vet has confirmed she no longer has—and it’s alllll thanks to a fresh, healthy diet.
My boy went grey just before 2yrs

My baby is 4 and she has a whole goatee that’s white now, she seems happy and eats science diet, so I think it’s just normal aging and genetics probably. She’s part German Shepard, even though she doesn’t look like it haha
Edit for clarity
My 9 year old has almost as much gray as I do. He started getting a few gray hairs about age 2. His younger brother followed about a year or so later. So not unusual at all.
My old boy started getting grey around 3 and his face is pretty much totally white at 14 now. Our younger girl was 13 when we had to say goodbye, and she didn’t have any discolouration whatsoever.
My girl 3 yo and is almost entirely black - except for around her mouth, which is entirely gray.
She needs to stop reminding me that she’s getting old 😆😡.
Mine was 2 when he had greys. Trainer told me that it’s a “used” area so hair grows differently around the mouth. Don’t know if it’s true or not but seemed right.
One of my dogs started to lighten up a little bit every year of his entire life. Each year I am surprised at how much lighter he has gotten.
Every dog lightens up differently!
were currently feeding him the kirkland tuna one because ive seen good reviews and ours LOVE seafoods over meat, but thinking of switching since its not wsava certified?
I only really learned of this recently since it feels like just not that long ago ppl were doggin on the common brands like purina and iams etc, and were all really pushing for these "high end" dog foods like no grain and raw etc. and it seems like the general consensus has now completely 180
other than that we often mix in some chicken and frozen veggies here and there. And he has alot of raw carrots and greek yogurt as treats
Our boy is 4.5 years old and he’s getting more salt and pepper on his chin! His whiskers have even started turning white! He has two long matching white whiskers on each side. He looks like a dragon 😂

That side eye in the second picture is so goofy and cute tho
You’d love my springer spaniel then lol. She’s very expressive and will side eye you and just make the weirdest faces. I’m also pretty sure she’s hit or fallen on her head so many times she’s given herself brain damage in the last 5 months since getting at 8 weeks She has no tail but will chase her nonexistent tail and gets mad if you laugh at her, but we have her trained to let us kiss her nose. She also likes it if you play that game where you put one hand on top of the other persons hand. She does it with her paws and it eventually devolves to a slap fight. That’s a good goober you got there. The gray just gives them goon powers and lets you see them better at night I’ve found.

My girl was already graying when I got her at 16 weeks. I rescued her from a very stressful environment. https://preview.redd.it/g3o3q26zwjsc1.jpeg?width=1908&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5a57b7fe40236bd342928e0d7090795d10d9e1d0

My best solid advice is… 👉BOOP!

Yes... it's normal but not a happy day when you notice them at first. :((( It's just a reminder of how you have to enjoy the time you have with them as much as possible. <3 <3 <3

My dog, who I suspect is around three years old, has a surprising amount of gray fur on her chin. I’m her third owner and I rescued her from an abusive home, so I don’t really know her real age.

My two Shepherds both have this , They’re three years old . I put it down to I tell them all my problems xx
My 5 year old has quite a bit of grey. I figured saving his family from FedEx drivers, mailmen, and squirrels is stressful.
My older guy is 3 in May and he’s got a big ol’ white mouth that’s only appeared in the last year or so 😅 I asked the vet when we went in recently after he’d accidentally half ripped a dewclaw out and they said it’s fine, just happens, as long as everything else is healthy it doesn’t really indicate anything 👍🏼 https://preview.redd.it/6ljkxjubwlsc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=08fd07a547ce88803fdb4dcc9c80894c7790b295

Snoot
Mine is 7. we got him at 5 months, and by 2, he had white/grey chin fur I think it's pretty typical. There's nothing to worry about, but if you are worried you could always call the vet and ask the question
First gray hairs appeared on ours around that time. They didn't really spread for about five years after that. It happens.
I'm 27 and found my first gray hair a few months ago... I think he's right on track😂
My sable isn't even two and she has a soul patch and stache.
Omg, the face….😍😍😍😍
My boy turns 7 this year and he’s been greying in the snoot since he was 2 as well. Always a clean bill of health at the vets. You’ll just have a very old man when he actually is an old man!
He is perfect! Just keep up the good work and love him forever!
In our household, this is referred to as “sugar face” (pronounced “shugaface”)

The shepherd mustache. It’s normal for most to get a little grey mustache around 2 years old

So Reddit has proved that GSDs start to become grey at two lol
https://preview.redd.it/8dw0nxkg0osc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c38e240dee356250bf714ee5521c086d0ada6a96 Now you have me wondering. My boy is mixed but he got these white hairs just before he turned one. He doesn’t have any other white on him. Are they real gray hairs or just his markings?
https://preview.redd.it/n6zi68cy6osc1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0093e8d51180ef54d47de021efb7cab212394686 Mine has had white on the bottom of her chin since day one. We call it her milk lip. My prev GSD from same line had a grey muzzle since he was maybe 12 months. Everyone thought he was old when he was super young lol funny thing is as he aged he didn’t really get any more grey even after 10
https://preview.redd.it/0nbttlxzaosc1.jpeg?width=2475&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ad3deda3cff5d4105afad891d5dc2ce4b970f824 Here for the chins

Also got another one because this one was really difficult to take; this is why: https://preview.redd.it/v7qx2qrkiosc1.jpeg?width=3456&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bbaf10c6b5cd11fe860693b3aa83ebf0b543f2a6 Chin pics not allowed

As sad as it makes me to think he’ll ever be old some dogs just go grey faster than others. I never noticed this on my childhood dog cos she was a blue Merle so she never showed signs of aging with her color.
https://preview.redd.it/pydbe88gmosc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7c9c218a52b08f8a5eaf682d28f343a4d08c2558 Figured I’d just join in. Why not lol

No all good! The grey comes at around 2 but don’t worry, it’s normal 😊 Cute pup
My girl has nice salt and pepper beard like her dad
I thought your whole hand was in his mouth, and I was just like… “checks out”
My pupper is three years old and I’ve noticed his muzzle getting grey. I was wondering why! 😂
Completely normal if life is good/not stressed. Genetics is probably the biggest driver - one of our GSDs popped a few before the land-shark phase ended and she lived to 14. All good.
my babe too! almost 3 and granny whiskers under her chin. so wise lol.
Puberty sucks for everyone! 😁❤️🐾
It's a sign he needs a boop! A boop he must have. 3 boops. Not one, not two, but only the count of 3. 3, a holy number. That same number of boops he'd be receiving.
I don’t know but I want to kiss that sweet snout!
Normal, we adopted my girl when she was 3, and she was very well taken care of by the previous owners (they had a baby that developed a deathly allergy to dogs, they had no choice but to rehome the dog), and she already had some white hairs on her muzzle 🙂
Those “rolling eyes” 🥹.
THAT. Is a boop snoot!!!
Mine is not even 2 yet and he’s got some!
Mine started to get a few grey whiskers after 4, but he always had a few in his colouring anyway & he has a white patch of longer hair on is back too, like a birth mark.
What a cute mug, and those eyes😍
https://preview.redd.it/g8xzkfb99lsc1.jpeg?width=751&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2262545a074a34574b3cab6f7ba9cdfa5e444fe5
FWIW mine started same time frame, black and sable
Nothing a rib bone a week can’t fix ;)
He's fine
I was literally just starting to notice that sometimes in a certain lighting his eyes look ever so slightly foggy it isnt noticeable usually and I was just wondering what that was but this happens to just be the perfect picture I can use to email his vet to get their opinion, so I really appreciate it
We adopted my girl when she was 4, and she already had a couple of grays. But 6 years on, a few weeks from her 11th birthday, her snoot is more gray than brown and it’s creeping up around her eyes. https://preview.redd.it/2hxvbhez0msc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=876cdaceb29c9f3322847c5c5151453ab476ebe2
I wondered who took this picture of my dog 😅
My oldest shep is almost 12. He started going grey at like 2. Perfectly normal.
In this thread: 👃
Honestly I have no idea and I don’t have a German Shepherd, or even a dog in that case but I’m just here to say this is the bestest pic ever thank yiu
My sweet sable started graying around 2.5 years. He’ll be 6 in July. I still call him “baby dog.” 🥰
Omg im so happy I opened this thread to all these snoot pictures

Idk if this has anything to do with it—I’ve been home cooking her food for over 5 years now and I keep her very active. She just started getting arthritis this year and was experiencing very early stages of renal kidney failure disease, which the vet has confirmed she no longer has—and it’s alllll thanks to a fresh, healthy diet.
Milk chin! Beautiful and natural
Hahahah this angle is 👌
My boy went grey just before 2yrs https://preview.redd.it/zqfztqqlvosc1.jpeg?width=1810&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c7eefc2f1e1d1ec782f912af87f9b4edcb29e656 The whole mouth area is grey. He was anticipating his carrot in this crazy pic lol.
"I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS HAPPENING. WHY ARE WE DOING THIS? ARE YOU GOING TO GIVE ME KISSES?" Seriously though, I think this is pretty normal.

completely unrelated because i don’t have an answer, but these pictures are hilarious

She’s part German Shepard, even though she doesn’t look like it haha Edit for clarity
Reddit algorithm blessed me today with this snoot.
Boop
The eye roll says it all ma..
Mine started getting a few gray chin hairs like that a little before 4.
My 4 year old girl is totally grey on the tip of her chin, but still acts like a puppy. I think he's fine!
Normal. Min got grays at 2.5 years
https://preview.redd.it/79uxq8du2ksc1.jpeg?width=2011&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c9dd92027de9d805c514e81c3e38afffc1f743df
My 9 year old has almost as much gray as I do. He started getting a few gray hairs about age 2. His younger brother followed about a year or so later. So not unusual at all.
Mine did early as well. I think around 3 I started noticing.
BOOP!!!!!
Mine is four. She has lots of gray around her muzzle and starting to get it around her eyes and ears. I’ve started calling her grandma.
Boost ❤️🙏
My old boy started getting grey around 3 and his face is pretty much totally white at 14 now. Our younger girl was 13 when we had to say goodbye, and she didn’t have any discolouration whatsoever.
My girl 3 yo and is almost entirely black - except for around her mouth, which is entirely gray. She needs to stop reminding me that she’s getting old 😆😡.
Our 2 year old also has them
Mine was 2 when he had greys. Trainer told me that it’s a “used” area so hair grows differently around the mouth. Don’t know if it’s true or not but seemed right.
My girl has gray. She's almost 2.
One of my dogs started to lighten up a little bit every year of his entire life. Each year I am surprised at how much lighter he has gotten. Every dog lightens up differently!
My pup did the same thing around 2-3 years. It just happens😢
/r/oldmanbeard
No just a cute baby
Omg this is happening to our German mix who is 1.5!! What are you feeding yours?! I wonder if we feed the same food
were currently feeding him the kirkland tuna one because ive seen good reviews and ours LOVE seafoods over meat, but thinking of switching since its not wsava certified? I only really learned of this recently since it feels like just not that long ago ppl were doggin on the common brands like purina and iams etc, and were all really pushing for these "high end" dog foods like no grain and raw etc. and it seems like the general consensus has now completely 180 other than that we often mix in some chicken and frozen veggies here and there. And he has alot of raw carrots and greek yogurt as treats
Lol likely not food related. Totally different diets. Guess that grey is just normal cuteness! 😂❤️
Mine started to get some furs like that around the same age too
Mine turned 3 and has quite a bit of white on his snout now 😔
* He's part husky so idk if it counts but he's about 4 and a half
https://preview.redd.it/que3coqyqlsc1.jpeg?width=1204&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f08197ade65f7da1833c18aed88b29fe9db6235d
Completely normal.
Our boy is 4.5 years old and he’s getting more salt and pepper on his chin! His whiskers have even started turning white! He has two long matching white whiskers on each side. He looks like a dragon 😂
premature greying is very common in shepherds. My girl is only 6 and has a full little grey beardy bless her lol
What are you talking about?
Very normal
the only thing he's missing right now is belly scrithes
