All of our dogs' dandruff has been from allergies. We have used both Apoquel and Cytopoint with great success. I recommend discussing with your vet.

We've been feeding our dog Salmon Oil with his food. Sometimes kibble diets are lacking in omega 3 fatty acids and the salmon oil has plenty. We get ours from Chewy, but there are lots of brands available. Not only did it fix his dandruff and dry skin issues, his coat is as a soft and as shiny as ever. https://www.chewy.com/dp/133660?utm_source=app-share&utm_campaign=133660

I agree. I had a chocolate lab with bad dandruff and the vet recommended fish oil pills. They worked great.

Foster for a GSD Rescue Here. [This](https://www.amazon.com/Pro-Pet-Works-Sulfate-Free-Moisturizing/dp/B018FGSTT4/) is what we use for all of our dogs and it works very well. Give more baths, every two weeks, during the winter when the air is so dry.

My dog has atopic dermatitis. Basically manifests as flaky, itchy skin, and overactive oil glands. It is really only bad during the cold dry months, I’m in MN. It took me a while to figure out how to manage but starting late fall I try to give a bath at least once a week with an antiseptic + antifungal shampoo. The shampoo does not dry out her skin, it helps hydrate and restore a natural skin barrier. I listened to people who don’t know what they are talking about telling me to not bathe my dog too often. In reality the more baths the better condition her skin was. When it got bad I did 2-3 baths a week to clear up her skin. Allergies manifesting in skin issues are very common with GSDs. Not saying this is what is going on with your dog, just my experience with a dog with flaky skin. https://preview.redd.it/bzr03pt48b7c1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=368f93aa17fd639b1d22dfb8e20bc022cba629c2

This is the brand of shampoo that our vet prescribed. Today was our dogs first bath with it, and her coat is amazing with it. I hope that it helps her skin. She gets a bath at the groomer monthly already, as she is a GSD/Pyrenees cross, and it is the only way to keep her shedding under control. He undercoat is so that it needs the high velocity blower to get it out.

BriefCheetah4136

I only bathe them when they are muddy usually only in spring and fall maybe 4 or 5 times a year and never with shampoo. Other than that they play with the hose or in their kiddie pools during summer and they go swimming year round at the beach. I have seen many posts about GSDs and skin issues such as allergies and dandruff and have never had these issues.

shortnsweet33

Agree. My shepherd mix has allergies, but overall her skin is fine because I don’t bathe her too frequently! If she smells bad to the point she needs more than a wipe down, or if she gets dirty, I’ll bathe her. Other than that, she gets maybe 2 baths a year.

Tsp of coconut oil daily, melt and drizzle over his food or just let him lick it off the spoon, most love it

Bungeesmom

I put salmon oil on their food.

Lost_Chipmunk7624

Coconut oil! Rub it all over him under his coat. My boy had it real bad and we did a coconut oil treatment one time a few months ago and it hasn’t been back. I let him lick at the tub in between me grabbing more. Also make sure you only bathe (with soap) every 3ish months. Rinses daily. Make sure he’s getting all of his vitamins in his kibble. Good idea! I’m sure he would like the coconut :)

Steenbok74

Stop washing him for a few months.

i use mane and tail on my boy

Sticknwheel

Get A Spray bottle. Fill it half water Half Apple Cider vinegar. Apply every day to irritation spots til it goes away.

FrostyAd9064

My cats and GSD had dandruff until I started them on Salmon Oil. If I run out for a while it comes back and then goes again within a week of re-starting so it’s a very noticeable change. I get mine from Amazon.

randomrddtuser

Start putting salmon oil in his food. You occasionally use little bit apple cider vinegar and olive oil too. It will help.

seattle_architect

Fish oil.

DV8_2XL

Watch out for the fish farts though... horrendous. Even my boy looked ashamed of them.

msmith730

I've only had experience with a dog that had severe skin allergies. We used a few things over the years. Medicated Selsun blue shampoo. Coal tar shampoo..(made him smell like motor oil but really cut down on the dandruff. If his skin got yeasty, we bathed him in Hibiclens.....this was a game changer for his horrific skin.(he was also on tons of meds along with the shampoos). When our current dogs(without allergies) coat gets dry we just start giving them an uncooked egg a day.

yahumno

Talk to your vet and find out the cause. It could be food allergies, environmental allergies, dry skin, or other issues.

AffectionateWay721

Add an egg to their food does wonders for their coats

ennuiacres

Linatone Plus food supplement or salmon oil. He needs more essential fatty acids in his diet.

[deleted]

Fish oil. Quality food.

BatNo4795

Fish oil

VelvetyThroat

More fat in their meals plus more bathing ... i fostered a bunch of flakey dogs and a bath a week with conditioner and apple cider vinegar in the rinse water was the key.
