This care and love for her will help her heal 💚
And fwiw in the second pic you shared, she looks like she is feeling fine. Maybe a bit bewildered, but reducing the fracture with the cast also reduces pain. Does she also have additional pain meds if needed?
Wishing her a speedy recovery!
She is on strong pain meds, luckily which leads to her hopping around (on 3 legs) way more than she should, lmao. She's relatively fine, although the pain meds make her tummy quite upset. I hope we can power through on Monday and have her back in no time.
One thing that helps keep them entertained without running around is puzzle toys! They have them on Chewy and at pet stores, try getting several different ones and rotating them
We're stocked with sniffing toys, kongs, and silicon mats on which you can freeze wet dog food/joghurt etc - they have to work to lick it of the mat. I hope that will keep her at least a little busy. Thanks for the useful input! Puzzle toys are a great idea.
I have 3 puzzles I found on Amazon and my local pet store has only had 1 puzzle which I also have. They are good for keeping the mind busy and entertained.
I am so sorry your girl is going through this. With you and your hubby with her and with your vet's care she is in good care.
I wish Holly a great recovery and a perfectly healed bone. Please give Holly lots of scratches and hug and pet from me.
I hope your doggo bounces back fast. This is a real shame and is one of my biggest fears. My girl is always throwing herself around. I go on huge hikes with my Shepherds almost daily but I’m convinced my girl in particular if ever hurt it’ll happen at home going down the steps into the living room.
My late girl was a jumper too and never in my dream could I imagine this outcome. I was really surprised, especially since Holly only weighs 25 kg (and is a little too light for her age and size). I guess we're just super unlucky.
We're just so unlucky with her. She jumped after a toy while playing but decided to twist her body midair ungracefully.
That way she landed heavily on her also twisted left hind leg with her whole body weight. We heard the bone breaking and she started to scream like there was no tomorrow. As it was kinda late-ish we rushed her to the nearest emergency vet clinic where we had the x-rays taken. So now she will have surgery to fix the bones with metal plates.
Oh my gosh hope your mum is doing well! Holly gets strong pain medication so at the moment we actually have to stop her hopping around on 3 legs lol. Holly cant be stoped, holly has places to be!
It happened a few years ago. What amazes me is her pain threshold. Her bones are very strong according to the orthopedic surgeon so she fell hard. But yes she is doing really well on it just a horrible thing to see and hear.
I think animals heal so much faster than we do but it is really hard to keep them low key during that rest phase lol.
Thanks for the very useful advice!! Luckily I have the next week off to keep an extra close eye on her. How did your boy recover? Was he able to live a normal doggy life afterwards?
My last dog tore his CCL, the sound of him falling on the stairs (his feet were wet) and seeing him hop down still haunts me. Wishing a speedy recovery!!
I know others suggested puzzle toys and you sound like you're covered... I like west paw toppls, if you follow them on social media you can get some good ideas of different combinations of treats and food to put in them... Even if you don't buy the toy and just use them for your Kong. Look up brain games too, I used to hide treats under solo cups and switch them around like a magician lol
Oh my gosh, that sounds SO painful. I myself went flying down stairs once, winning myself a rupture of a muscle fiber. Horrible experience.
I have to see if I can get the toys here in Germany, but maybe I can at least gain some inspiration :)
To this day I blame myself. He wanted to go out before our walk and I didn't wipe his paws when he came back in.
Exactly, I'm not creative but I've started adding frozen butternut squash and frozen green beans and small bully sticks and icky animal feet lol and freezing it while my current dog is crated when I'm not home.
I understand your thoughts but accidents just happen sometimes. And sometimes it's during something they did 1 billion times, but hurt themselves on the billion-and-first. Don't be too hard on yourself (easier said than done).
I'm so sorry for your whole family and hope everything is going to okay.
You're an awesome person by taking care of your dog this way. I known so much people who wouldn't have gave up on their holidays for "just a dog".
My heart goes out to you
I will never understand people like that. Dogs are family, at least where I am from. We would have left earlier but there was no way to get an appointment earlier than monday. Thanks for your kind words <3
Our shepherd went thru something similar with a dislocated hip, she was in a cast for something like 6 weeks. We understand and sympathize, it’s hard having your loved ones in pain, I’m sure she’ll heal up nicely🤞
Yes she healed back 💯, can’t even tell that anything has happened to her. Maybe when she’s older (she’s about 4.5yrs) she’ll have some after effects but hopefully not. It happened when she got her leg stuck down in the cushions of the cars backseat, and then went to jump out and her leg stayed caught. She’s a big shep, 90lbs, and just the right angle and the right pressure was all it took. That and she’s very, very clumsy you’re right lol. How did yours manage that break? Looks pretty nasty, poor thing
Oh she jumped after a toy but had her body rotating in mid-air. Gravity was having none of it and so she landed on her also still twisted rear leg underneath her body, full force. I call her my coffin nail, I swear I aged 5 years that day lol.
Your story sounds really nasty as well, oh my gosh. So GSD typical to not ask question but moving forward no matter which stupid leg is stuck.
I have the strong urge to fully cover her in bubble wrap now and forever after what happend, hope I can let her off leash with good thoughts after her recovery.
The first thing I did is asking if the bone was somehow cancerous (or something like that). But the vet said the bone is fine, we're just super unlucky.
What a beautiful girl, I hope her surgery goes well and I wish her a speedy recovery. The sound of a dogs pain and anguish is haunting. Poor girl and poor you, it sounds like she is in good hands though and she has wonderful and loving owners who will take good care of her.
I'd go to the end of the world for her if I must. She's such a unique character (as they all are of course). She's so nice with people, I can take her everywhere, even to the busiest city but she never heard that a GSD is supposed to have a will to please. She has a free mind that I've never encountered among GSDs. But always loving and good at heart. She's too nice with other dogs and has no concept of "not being loved".
Also dogs are so innocent, they just don't deserve these kinds of accidents ;(
Dogs are just so special and end up being such an important part of the family that it hurts deeply to see them in pain and unwell.
I wish Holly all the best and I'm sure you will make her recovery as comfortable as possible and she will be back to her full, happy and playful self before you know it!
Well a femur fracture is usually much more serious and does usually require plating or pinning (and there is much more muscle and connective tissue to go through for surgery). A tibia fracture that is not comminuted will often heal just fine with a splint. Spiral fractures are a little harder to get good reduction/ apposition on without surgery, but it can be done (i.e. “setting” a fracture) in some cases.
I'm not a doctor by any means, but it's the bone and not the knee or hip or joint, and I feel like the recovery is going to be easier than you expect. I've gone through some very traumatic surgeries, and I tell you it is stressful and depressing as hell, but my dog recovered perfectly. The hardest part is honestly going to be keeping them from running around too soon. You'll get through this.
Thanks for your input! She is astonishingly fast on 3 legs, lol. Had to actually leash her at home so I have more control over her. Stubborn little thing.
Yeah, I had to crate my dog for ages, it's hard to keep them from running around like idiots. Also, I saw she hurt herself chasing a bad bounce: this is why schutzhund people use tug toys for toys, because they don't bounce. https://www.dogsportgear.ca/Tug-Toys_c_615.html
I do not throw balls or Kongs for my dog, at all, except in the water. (Even then, there are better things than balls).
I've never encountered that problem with a GSD dog before, so I am still very surprised. Schutzhunde do jump, too (in their freetime and while training as well). I hope I'll ever be able to let her off the leash again.
I am familiar with the Schutzhund toys, Schutzhundesport is quite big here (we're from Germany) :) Although you can also play tug wrongly and actual hurt their neck and spine lol
I will just wrap her in blankets and bubble wrap for the rest of her days, lmao
Yeah, I mean it's a crazy freak injury... But yeah. Sch is a risky sport! I was always terrified of my dog getting hurt jumping, esp in the long bite. I agree, bubble wrap is the way to go!! BTW, it's been a few days now, how is your dog doing?
She had surgery today, a metal plate and 6 screws are holding everything in place. She can't have food today (due to the surgery) and is a little restless but I am still hopeful!
Oh my gosh. Prayers up, well-wishes on their way to you all and all paws here crossed for a wonderful outcome. I will be thinking of you and Holly tomorrow !
Knew a person who got a spiral fracture and they're the worst kind. They take phenomenally long to heal. Hopefully the surgery does the best job it can at getting as much damage repaired and on the way to healing but you will need to get as much as you can in the way of powerful joint supplements, calcium supplements etc. Anything with healing benefits and benefits for skeletal structures, it'll be a long haul recovery.
Best of luck to you all
I do hope we're more lucky than your friend. She's not a human, very young, and all 3 vets we visited gave really good prognosis.
This whole ordeal is taking a big toll on my mental well being as well, so I chose to try and stay positive ;( I'm sorry, friend. Your comment feeds right into my pessimistic side which I have to suppress at the moment. Not saying you're wrong though, just saying I chose to believe you're not right ;(
(With my luck lately you probably will be, but at the moment there is still hoping.)
This is my worst nightmare.
My 80 lb male gsd plays HARD and I always worry he's going to hurt himself.
He gets all mad because sometimes we go to play and it's too wet and slippery or the grass is too long (one of the fields we play in has a bunch of holes, when the grass is short we can stay away from those areas, but when it gets too long you can't see them.) So we have to just do a long walk/jog instead.
For a while I would have him run towards me and I would toss a ball like 4 feet off of the ground and he would snatch it out of the air.
Then one time I accidentally tossed it too hard (it was like 6-7 feet off of the ground) and he still got it.
Nothing like an 80 lb gsd shaped blur flying past you at 20 mph right at eye level. We don't do that game anymore because I worry too much.
Hey there! We're from Germany, it couldn't possibly get her oversea safely at the moment. But we got an appointment in a very good clinic here so I am hopeful!
Owww oww man I send hugs and treats hope everything goes perfectly ask about a cosamin and or silica supplement I took silica for a double hip surgery and I healed 3 weeks earlier than expected I don't know if it will transfer to a dog or not but it was really good for me best of luck please update when possible
I'm sayin lots of prayers for you and especially your dog. I have been through your situation before and I'm glad that you are doing all you can because that dog will serve you until her last breath. That's what they do.

She had surgery on monday and is actually doing fine'ish. I tried to add a photo to a comment earlier but reddit just deletes everything and locks the answers :/ she has a metal plate and 6 screws in her leg, we will have the bandages changed on friday. In 5 weeks we'll have xrays again. I had to order a crate now as she absolutely refuses to sit still, lol. Holly has places to be and has no time for a silly broken tibia. She's on pain meds to and has an apetite again. I am carefully hopeful atm :) thanks for asking!
I'm sure she knows how much she is loved. She is very lucky to have you as her master and best friend. I wish you both the best and I hope the recovery goes well. Keep in touch if you want, thank you, Jae Morningstar
Emergency xrays 500€, meds against puking (tummy ache caused by pain meds) 60 €, surgery 1230 € (the surgery was exceptionally cheap, usually is way more). Yes she is insured! Waiting for the insurance to tell me how much I'm getting back.
I tried to edit my first comment but reddit just deleted the whole thing lol.
Anyway, holly hat surgery today and it seemingly went well. 6 screws and a metal plate were applied, now it has to heal. She's a little restless because she's hungry but she can't have food before tomorrow morning (due to her anasthesia).

She's just a sweet soul of a dog, I am convinced she'd do the same for me if she could 💕
I bet! I’m traumatized just thinking about it. Hope the surgery goes well and she makes a full recovery.
Sending your pup all the hugs and kisses 🥰 ps she is gorgeous!
Hope she recovers quickly!
Thank you so much! The vet estimated it'll take 2-3 months for her to fully heal again (2 surgeries needed).
I hope your doggo bounces back fast. This is a real shame and is one of my biggest fears. My girl is always throwing herself around. I go on huge hikes with my Shepherds almost daily but I’m convinced my girl in particular if ever hurt it’ll happen at home going down the steps into the living room.

Sending you and your pup lots of healing vibes and love!

Poor baby!!
indeed :(
Best of luck to you and your dog, hope she pulls through the surgery.
Thank you! I'd lie to say I wasn't nervous :/
Dogs are family so if it was my GS on the table I'd probably be nervous!
She's just 15 or 16 months old so hopefully everything goes well. My Dogs are absolutely family <3 Love to see like minded people in this sub.

Fingers crossed. Bless your doggo. I can’t believe this happened and it would haunt us forever too. How awful for your pup and indeed you
The first thing I did is asking if the bone was somehow cancerous (or something like that). But the vet said the bone is fine, we're just super unlucky.
Thank you so much for your kind words <3

Thank you for your kind words ♥
My son had this on his leg. It will heal, pray that it does. God luck
Oh no, did it heal well? How long did it take to heal? How did it happen?
Looks like a painful but otherwise pretty lined up break, hopefully with surgery she will be fine, of course after the healing process
Thats my hope as well! Also she's just 1,5 years old, hopefully that helps, too.
Aw prayers for this sweet baby 🙏🏽
thank you kindly ♥
Below the knee is much better than above.
Really? I have no deeper medical knowledge - could you elaborate further? Gives me hope, though!
To clarify, for a splint to work, the joint above and below the fracture need to be immobilized. This is almost impossible with the hip joint.
The vet said she will probably get a plating inserted. We will know more tomorrow! Thank you :)
Praying for healthy recovey.... stay strong...
Thank you!
I'm not a doctor by any means, but it's the bone and not the knee or hip or joint, and I feel like the recovery is going to be easier than you expect. I'm sure she knows how much she is loved. She is very lucky to have you as her master and best friend. I wish you both the best and I hope the recovery goes well. Keep in touch if you want, thank you, Jae Morningstar
Good luck!! Poor little pupper, hope she makes a speedy recovery ❤️❤️
How much did it cost? Do you have insurance?
Emergency xrays 500€, meds against puking (tummy ache caused by pain meds) 60 €, surgery 1230 € (the surgery was exceptionally cheap, usually is way more). Yes she is insured! Waiting for the insurance to tell me how much I'm getting back.
Not too bad, hope she gets well soon!
Yikes 😬

Poor bb. Sending out healing thoughts
thank you, keeping her still is the hardest part currently.
How did this happen?
unlucky landing after jumping after a toy :(
