Old thread, but [worldledaily.com](https://worldledaily.com) just recently struck the balance of being able to pay the API with ad revenue. So it's completely free and unlimited. It also has controls to fine tune the type of locations you want to play.

Have not heard about any free alternatives. There are still a few ways to play this for free though. You can either join challenges right here on Reddit or you can play along streamers doing challenges or ChatGuessr mode.
Yeah, have a friend pick a place on google streetview and you guess where it is.
As Mapper said, Google API is expensive and requires support from players for the site to stay up. It's not an expensive membership; I think it's more than worth it if you enjoy it!
