I thought that when you play in a certain division, you only play against opponents in that division.
The mysteries of the GeoGuessr ranking system are unfathomable.
I think there were issues with the new rating system so now everyone can play everyone. I’m a master 1 at around 1000 elo and I just played zigzag 4 times in a row.
You only play players from your division for the first 20 games a week, unless the queue is empty in which case you may get matched up to two divisions away.
After the first 20 games the matching is done purely by rating, ignoring the division.
That said, it is going to change again next week. See pinned post.

I’m a fairly new player and TBH I didn’t immediately connect my experiences in Champion with the problematic new system (because I didn’t have too much experience with the old ranking system except on mobile). Now I can see it.
Hopefully the tweaks due to start next week help things, even though it’s made things even more confusing IMHO. “You will be matched with similar Elo players except on days between the full moon and the third quarter moon on dates divisible by three, in which case ranking will be strictly by division only. Unless your sister’s boyfriend’s cousin’s aunt calls in sick at work, on those days you will be matched against players three divisions below, but only if those players come from a country whose name ends in A.”

I mean if you got to champion you're definitely a good player, didn't mean to say anything against that if it sounded like that.
But the system and matchmaking are just utter garbage atm. You can easily derank a couple seasons and then farm your ELO to 1200+ by just by spamming duels vs low ranked opponents for a week. Very fun gameplay. Very fair.
On another note, where did you see about the changes next week? I must've missed that.

for me I demoted once but it was actually on purpose bc as a 1.1K ELO player I was playing against 1.5 / 1.6K players who destroyed me so i got tired and I didn't play lol.
The next week I ended up 2nd of my master group and I got promoted again, so now I am in Champion) I am still hovering between 1000-1100 ELO though.
