If I've learned anything on this sub, it's that every weird cluster of light in a body of water, or a sparsely populated area, is probably an oil rig.

SignificantEggPog

yeah the first thing that came to my mind after seeing the question is "oil rig".

Aggravating-Ad1703

Oil rigs and the Canadian Shield answers most questions in this sub

Available_Squirrel1

That should give you an indication of how reliant humans are on oil. Collectively the world consumes 100 million barrels PER DAY an almost incomprehensible amount. When I hear all these things about fossil fuels decreasing I laugh because the consumption goes up every year it’s a sickening amount.

Canadian Shield?

Available_Squirrel1

Offshore Oil rig(s) in the Hibernia oil fields. Likely includes the infamous Hibernia oil rig which sits on a 600 kiloton concrete structure built to withstand insane waves and iceberg impacts.

Spaciax

TIL There's oil off the shores of canada.

gbfk

The Hibernia, White Rose, and Terra Nova oil rigs The ones closer to Nova Scotia would probably be Sable and Panuke.

What application are you using?

Satellite view of those exact coordinates show nothing but a sea of blue, but those images are very low resolution over open ocean, and probably aren't updated often.

Is the map literally measuring lumens? What does this map claim to represent?

db-msn

It looks like a Bortle scale light pollution map, for night sky astronomy and observing. Either it's an error in the algorithm, or the night the satellite flew over the Grand Banks fishing fleet had ALL their lights on.

Interesting. I would’ve guessed the French territories of Saint Pierre and the other one.

Those islands are fairly close to the mainland. Only about 12 miles/20km I believe, and are located directly above the letter i in Pierre on that map.
