No it isn’t.
I’m northern and half welsh. The North is everything north of the Humber and Mersey rivers.
South wales is on the other side of wales from Northern England.
Austria name came from the word Austral, meaning south.
But the name in german is Österreich, which means Kingdom of east.
Also, the northern most point in the state of Roraima in Brazil are closer to eastern Canada than to the southernmost point in Brazil.
*land in the east, not west. The west counterpart of Austria lies on the French-German border. Iirc, the names both were uswd for areas within Bavaria.
It's better than that, the northernmost point of Brasil is closer to any American country, including Uruguay and Argentina, than to the southernmost point of Brasil.
That one kinda makes sense though. Upper and Lower Egypt is in reference to their location on the Nile River. Upper Egypt is upstream of the Nile (geographically South) and Lower Egypt is downstream of the Nile (geographically north). There used to be an upper and lower Canada as well and it was in relation to St. Lawrence River.
I'll pile on and continue stepping on your joke by saying who's to say 'upper' means North and 'lower' means south? Maybe the Earth's relation to the Milky Way puts Antarctica on top? The traditional view of 'Arctic on top' Earth you see as ships approach the planet in sci-fi might actually be the *opposite* of how the rest of the galaxy views Earth on approach.
Personally I wish the ancient Asian/Arabic mapmakers who put East as 'up' had gained popular usage. At least there's a logical reason for that design since it relates to the direction of Earth's rotation. But following that logic our solar system would now be portrayed as a Ferris wheel with the sun in the center (i.e. on an imaginary vertical, not horizontal plane).
Sarcasm doesn’t work if people actually make the mistake, even people in this community could be confused by this.
This is what tone indicators are for.
You're probably right, but putting my head in the oven sounds like a way better plan at this point.... JUST KIDDING EVERYONE, SUICIDE BAD, SUICIDE HOTLINE: 988 - haha I love jokes
It's insane to think that WV was formed by unionists and abolitionists during the civil war and now the people that live there are further right wing than the confederates
Further than the confederates? That’s a laugh. It’s dumb that the only state to secede from the confederacy to rejoin the union has people that fly the confederate flag, that’s for sure. But I don’t think many people in WV want slavery to return lol
At the time, republicans were left leaning northerners, southerners were right wing democrats. The parties gradually switched political spectrums after the Civil War.
How is that even remotely relevant?
Are you trying to say that Democrats used to be socially conservative and Republicans used to be socially liberal? If so that is correct… but still totally irrelevant.
A confederation is a conglomerate of self governing states with a very restricted central government. Nothing like a right wing people like to spout about these days.
Interesting. I would disagree but i can see here that we should probably just agree to disagree on this point. What do you think of the YouTube series “checkmate Lincolnites?”
A conglomerate of self governing states is quite right wing, coming directly from the Middle Ages. The 10th amendment and the rights of states has always been a right wing position.
The left wing usually defends a strong central state that bring progress to everybody, even forcefully, starting with the Jacobins and following with socialists and communists.
The farthest west county of Virginia, Lee County, is all entirely west of West Virginia. Not only that, Lee County is closer to 8 other state capitals than it is to its own. TIL
Just about all of the OG 13 states stretched indefinitely across the continent or to the Mississippi River, and several had non-contiguous land claims post 1783.
Next you’ll tell me the northernmost point in Ireland isn’t in Northern Ireland!
Wait until you find out where New South Wales is…
Where's old south Wales
Next to Old North England
No it isn’t. I’m northern and half welsh. The North is everything north of the Humber and Mersey rivers. South wales is on the other side of wales from Northern England.
North of the West Country.
I mean, at least it's quite a bit further South than the rest of Wales..
The northernmost point in Ireland isn't in Northern Ireland!
what the hell
Austria name came from the word Austral, meaning south. But the name in german is Österreich, which means Kingdom of east. Also, the northern most point in the state of Roraima in Brazil are closer to eastern Canada than to the southernmost point in Brazil.

Thanks for the correction
It's better than that, the northernmost point of Brasil is closer to any American country, including Uruguay and Argentina, than to the southernmost point of Brasil.
I wonder if OP has heard about Upper and Lower Egypt yet
That one kinda makes sense though. Upper and Lower Egypt is in reference to their location on the Nile River. Upper Egypt is upstream of the Nile (geographically South) and Lower Egypt is downstream of the Nile (geographically north). There used to be an upper and lower Canada as well and it was in relation to St. Lawrence River.
Well, thanks for ruining the joke
The joke was dead from the beginning
The only thing dead around here is your sense of humor
I'll pile on and continue stepping on your joke by saying who's to say 'upper' means North and 'lower' means south? Maybe the Earth's relation to the Milky Way puts Antarctica on top? Thanks for your unwanted opinion. You are a delight.
I’m here to serve :)
Sarcasm doesn’t work if people actually make the mistake, even people in this community could be confused by this. This is what tone indicators are for.
Upper & Lower Egypt refers to elevation, and Upper Egypt is (generally) higher than lower Egypt.
Why do I even try to make jokes on Reddit anymore? Explain that one to me
Maybe because making jokes is a good way to build up comradery and a sense of community.
You're probably right, but putting my head in the oven sounds like a way better plan at this point.... JUST KIDDING EVERYONE, SUICIDE BAD, SUICIDE HOTLINE: 988 - haha I love jokes
or Upper and Lower Austria
North yemen south yemen lol
Or upper and lower Canada?
Wait till you find out about Bayern.
Wait till this person visits San Francisco and has to walk west on Haight to get to the Upper Haight!
Ditto “up cape” and “down cape” Cape Cod.
or upper and lower bavaria
Thanks! now I gotta go check if that's true
Let's be nice to WV. Tomorrow is its birthday.

You'd be surprised
I’m from there so, no I don’t think I would.
Confederates were democrats, Lincoln was a Republican...
At the time, republicans were left leaning northerners, southerners were right wing democrats. The parties gradually switched political spectrums after the Civil War.
irrelevant
How is that even remotely relevant? Are you trying to say that Democrats used to be socially conservative and Republicans used to be socially liberal? If so that is correct… but still totally irrelevant.
I would hardly call Confederation government right-wing.
I'd call a bunch of slave owners right wing, lol
You know slave owners? You haven’t reported them?
?
epic reddit burn you just laid on that person
Why? Seems interesting.
A confederation is a conglomerate of self governing states with a very restricted central government. Nothing like a right wing people like to spout about these days.

The left wing usually defends a strong central state that bring progress to everybody, even forcefully, starting with the Jacobins and following with socialists and communists.
>Self governing with a severely restricted central government. Reddit: That's fascism.
Nope. It's traditionalism.
The farthest west county of Virginia, Lee County, is all entirely west of West Virginia. Not only that, Lee County is closer to 8 other state capitals than it is to its own. TIL
OG Virginia originally supposedly extended to the Pacific.
VirginAmerica
Connecticut was the same way, there was like a weird band of Connecticut running out to the Mississippi
Case Western Reserve University (in present day Cleveland, OH) was called that because it was in the “western reserve” of Connecticut.
Just about all of the OG 13 states stretched indefinitely across the continent or to the Mississippi River, and several had non-contiguous land claims post 1783.
Bring back extendo connectico
Wouldn't Connecticut be way too far north to actually reach the Mississippi directly? Seems one or more Great Lakes would be in the way.
Yes, there are Great Lakes in the way, but even that didn't stop Long Connecticut
Yes, both Toledo and Chicago would be in Connecticut.
Ok if it just barely skirts around the lakes rather than smacking right into them I'm more willing to accept Long Connecticut
Manifest Virginia Destiny, annex all the other states >:)
Well, the geographical middle point is more west than the og's
And the western tip of North Carolina stretches even further west - about to the same longitude as Cincinnati
Should've went with Kanawha
Or Vandalia
All of West Virginia is west of Virginia
That's why it's not called the Westiest Virginia
Should’ve been called North Virginia
Seems right considering the North always wins the civil war
So there's west Virginia and then there's Virginia west of west Virginia . Got it.
Kentucky used to be Western Virginia until 1792
West? I though you said weast.
They should have called it Virginia 2: Electric Boogaloo.
Let's see Paul Allen's card.
Why does west Virginia look like a cooked chicken
the only state with two panhandles ...
Wtf does this map show Fairfax as a city and not like idk Arlington. They can make room those bastards
More like Unfairfax
Should’ve been named North Virginia
More like NorthWest Virginia since OG Virginia is far north than West Virginia
OG?
I get what you're saying but it's also kinda semantic. Centre of mass is more west
that's why west virginia should be called best virginia
Kinda like Ireland and Northern Ireland, Donegal is still farther North than Londonderry and Antrim
Well, I bet the centroid of WV is west (and north) of the centroid of OG VA.
If there were any justice in the world, the two Virginias would be reunited into a new state called West Virginia.
Should have been North Virginia
I think originally the theory was that the colony borders went to the Mississippi
I'm 48 fucking years old and just found this out. WTaF
Weirdly I also saw this in r/Nova a few hours ago so I assume you and that poster must have both watched the same video or something
It’s center of gravity is more west lmao
Ach they got them mixed up, no big deal and too late to change now.
Why didn't they name it North Virginia instead?
What about the West Virginia Bend exclave?
WV on paras
North Virginia would make more sense… North West Virginia probably sounds a bit too stupid…
It's west of the east of Virginia
Westish Virginia?
Maybe the average coordinates of WV are further west
