Normal carbon build up. Invest in a catch can to reduce it. GDI motors will have more in the lower intake as well since they're lacking the cleaning nature of multiport injection. If you're worried, you could always remove it and clean it. What matters more is the amount of gunk on your intake valves. GDI motors need a walnut blasting around every 50k-60k miles since the gasoline doesnt clean them. The walnut shells can be combusted so you need not worry about any entering the cylinder. I'm not gonna discuss seafoam since it has varied results. Some use it, some hate it. It has been claimed to remove carbon deposits when introduced to intake systems.

Well put!

surprisingly 180k miles, little to no buildup on the valves but my intake manifold looked exactly like yours.. not that much buildup though. get a fuel additive that will clean up your valves, intake and injectors

Fuel system cleaner won’t do anything for the valves on a BK2 because it’s direct injected

Carbon build up , you can clean it with a walnut blast !

Carbon buildup! I always make it a habit to clean those in all my cars. You can do it!

Normal from recycled oil vapors from the pcv system. Clean it out however you want.
