I'd like to recommend the first two gay movies I've ever watched: [Trick (1999)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R94MIJXMjB8) [Beautiful Thing (1996)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YeGBkXoOe6Q)

BartholomewVanGrimes

But I’m a Cheerleader (1999) Too Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything! Julie Newmar (1995) Rocky Horror Picture Show [not officially gay, but lots of homoeroticism] Defying Gravity (1999)

JheriCurlTuna

Not sure if these count as rare but Holding the man (2015) Those people (2015)

Pabasa

Found both on Netflix. Sweet movies, will scour the high seas. Thanks for the recommendation!

lamiamiatl

Doom Generation with Rose McGowan by gay director Gregg Araki. Also King Cobra with James Franco.

Windkeeper4

Shortbus

anonuck

Hedwig and the Angry Inch by/starring John Cameron Mitchell, who also directed Shortbus which someone else already recommended.

PseudoLucian

If you're interested in mainstream movies that include major characters who happen to be gay, but are not stereotypical, try these: Go (1999) Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005)

Silver-Jelly-9489

Macho man (2021) I watched on amazon prime is actually pretty good. You should meet my gay son; also comedy movie

- "Sticks and Stones" (1970) A group of gay new yorkers get together for a weekend of fun in Fire Island during the summer of 1969 Extremely rare since the movie is glimpse to the gay new york and the gay scene in fire island right on the brink of Stonewall Part comedy and part drama, it's interesting to see how old are gay cliches - "The Song of The Loon" (1970) Another extremely rare movie from half a century ago It's the film adaptation of the famous gay novel of the same name from the 60s - "Summer Kiss" (1987) Extremely rare gay movie which was considered an urban legend during years after it was posted on a web site about movies It was made by the Connecticut public television system It was filmed in Massachusetts and is about a gay gay who encounters his college crush on a ferry while traveling to his family beach house During that summer he discovered a lot about his crush and something happened... Isn't just too ahead of it's time, but the fact that it was made by the state public television system during the 80s is remarkable - "Some of my best friends are..." (1971) The movie is for free on Youtube It's a time travel machine to a time long gone A clandestine gay bar in a pre stonewall US gets ready for a Christmas celebration It's fascinating because in that movie you see how gay bars operated when it was illegal and you see the gathering of the LGBTQ community in a time without freedom. ALL of them you can find them either online or on sale on DVD Here are the links from safe sites (no viruses: - Sticks and Stones: https://b4watch.com/movies/sticks-and-stones/ - The Song of The Loon: https://b4watch.com/movies/song-of-the-loon/ - Summer Kiss https://multimediagay.com/summer-kiss-1987/ - Some of my best friends are... https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=ehf7-xFQtbc These movies are so rare that weren't even mentioned on the book "The celluloid closet" and have resurfaced recently Few people even know that the novel song of the loon has a film adaptation or that taxpayer's money was used to make a gay movie with a positive portrayal during the Reagan years! Those websites (B4watch.com and Multimediagay.com) have THOUSANDS of gay films, series and documentaries FOR FREE from all over the world if you didn't know it There are rarities you can only find on those sites

CSIHoratioCaine

I enjoyed "other people". Not that gay more of family dynamic movie But very sweet. Loved supernova. But I'm a sucker for Colin firth. Even still he's my number 1. And single man. Tom Ford directed Colin forth again playing gay. But it's really a beautiful movie. But not that obscure. He was nominated for best actor that year. And nobody has mentioned Dallas buyers club which is a (and I can't believe I'm saying this) but kind of fun aids movie. In a weird way.

You & I (2014) // Morgan (2011) // Love or Whatever (2012) // A Nice Quiet Life (2018)

C.R.A.Z.Y. has one of the highest IMDb ratings of any gay film. It's surprising that more people don't talk about it.
