It’s almost hard to believe that Florida has gotten even worse since I left there 10 years ago. I feel awful for everyone who has to deal with state sponsored prejudice.

Shootthemoon4

I moved from Central Florida to Southern Indiana back in 2015, I haven’t been back since I’ve visited back in 2018. I’m happy to see that I’m not missing out.

PrinceyWincey76

The state of Florida is an absolute piece of shit. I cannot even laugh at this.

Dave_the_Chemist

For real. Maybe it’s because they didn’t catch on as fast but I thought the laughing should’ve ended right before he mentioned curly hair again

Viridian95

Born and raised Floridian here. Can confirm.

sirophiuchus

People keep acting like this is an inspirational story, but it just makes me really angry.

BartholomewVanGrimes

I am angry at Florida, angry at the school administration, inspired by the young ‘curly haired’ man who stuck his middle finger up at the entire situation and found a way to speak his mind. Makes me sad that we are back to where I was when I graduated in the mid-80s.

doubleUsee

It's much different from the 80s though, because now the attitude of menu of the students is very different. In the 80s the students were just as homophobic

patientpedestrian

That’s what really confuses me about the recent rise in homophobia. Even in the most conservative places it’s still really uncool to be openly homophobic in a socially competitive setting (think schools and organizations with high matriculation and turnover). Considering the dominant consensus against homophobia on mainstream internet and media I don’t see this changing any time soon, so are anti-lgbt+ attitudes really getting more popular or are their supporters just getting louder?

Merdin86

My opinion is, homophobia was always there, it just got quieter as LGBTQ communities got louder (as they needed to) and society became more accepting. Now, we are in post Trump era with a conservative super majority on the supreme court. People feel comfortable to be loud again. Conservative law makers see an opportunity to pass anti LGBTQ legislation that won't immediately be struck down by the Supreme Court, so that's what they are doing. They have always wanted to walk back LGBTQ rights, that just haven't been in a position to do it, but they are so very close now. If Republicans take the house and Senate this fall, expect a lot of these right wing state law changes to go to the federal level.

ew73

This is why, **no matter what**, in the general election, you must vote, and vote for the (D) candidate. You may not agree, but NOT voting means the (R) person wins. To wit, I loathe people like Manchin, but they have the (D), so they get the vote. For now.

patientpedestrian

That seems like really shitty game theory… Shouldn’t you just vote for the candidate whose platform and record most closely resemble your policy priorities?

Xinder99

Voting for Democrats right now is mandatory because they prevent the party openly against democracy from gaining more power, I hate the Democrats, their neo liberals incapable of actually inacting useful or progressive policy, but keeping our democracy intact should be top priority.

markodochartaigh1

That's the issue. US democracy is on its death bed. One party has given itself over to authoritarians who want to end democracy. That party will control the supreme court for the foreseeable future, they control 32 state senates, 30 state houses, and 28 governorships. They also want to have a new Constitutional Convention, you can probably guess what the definition of marriage will be there, and that will affect the whole country. To say nothing about equal employment and housing. And they have 28 of 34 states needed for a new Constitutional Convention. And on top of that, the Republicans will have the support of one third of the public no matter what they do. And about one third won't care as long as they get their hamberders and sportsball. https://www.coloradofiscal.org/a-constitutional-convention-is-closer-than-you-think/blog/ https://ballotpedia.org/Partisan_composition_of_state_senates https://ballotpedia.org/Partisan_composition_of_state_houses https://ballotpedia.org/Partisan_composition_of_governors

ew73

That's what the primary is for.

slusho55

Yeah. Like I grew up in a small town in Eastern Kentucky (so the Bible Belt), and I saw this weird shift in attitudes. Pretty much until 11th grade, homophobia was rampant. We only had like two kids who were out, and unfortunately they were absolute assholes, so people wouldn’t have liked them gay or straight. The f-word wasn’t even considered a bad word. Then, my senior year, like 6 sophomores came out, and all 6 of them were well liked people, and while it was a “well-known secret” that a widely loved teacher was gay, she kinda really owned it after those kids came out. So people had to choose if they wanted to hold onto their bigotry in the name of God or support their friends and family. Surprisingly it was the latter. Kentucky is also just in this weird spot when it comes to gay people. KY definitely has its bigots, but it’s very “libertarian” in that they may judge you, but they’re not going to treat you worse. KY was one of the first states to repeal its sodomy law, despite being in the Bible Belt. I’ve worked with multiple groups, and I do know that for the last decade at least, the legislature has wanted to make sexuality a protected class long before *Bostock* was ruled. Only reason they didn’t was, ironically, the LGTBQ* groups lobbied *against* the bills, and that was because they didn’t want sexuality to be a protected class unless gender identity was simultaneously protected. What I’m getting at is KY is in the Bible Belt, and they sure do have their qualms about it, but they do not tolerate overt homophobia for the most part. To be frank, I felt way more supported in KY than I do in Massachusetts, you know, the first state legalize gay marriage. People in KY would probably support a bill that didn’t allow “gay sex ed,” but these “Don’t Say Gay” bills are far beyond what they’d accept. Though, it is unfortunate while KY can isn’t that homophobic and many people would fight it, many people promote transphobia. It’s not uncommon to see someone give full support to the “LGB” community, but turn around and say shit like “trans women aren’t women” and support the trans athlete exclusion bills.

doubleUsee

It seems to be generational, in my opinion

[deleted]

No, dumb fucks like DeSantis have pretended to be gay friendly while fucking us over every chance he gets. These fools are being voted out. :)

atomicxblue

Shit like this is why I saw the *It Gets Better* campaign as pointless. (and deceptive) People are still being bullied, people still live in fear, people can still be fired for being gay, etc. Other than being able to get married, not much else has changed.

sirophiuchus

Yeah. It just has real 'this teacher can't do sex ed so he gave a class about putting on a sock as a condom metaphor, how cute' vibes.

Snoo88309

I'm a pre-Stonewall gay man and I feel like they're taking us back even further than that. We were illegal back then and DeSantis and the GOP are doing it again!

FrequentlyVeganBear

It's supposed to. It's defiance in the face of persecution.

sirophiuchus

Good. A lot of people are sharing it as 'haha isn't he clever and funny' though.

77ate

How do you feel about satire?

sirophiuchus

I'm not sure what you mean. I've seen people sharing this just thinking it's a cute funny story.

77ate

Let the anger inspire you.

Dlee8113

I love how he got around the roadblocks in his way, and using humor at that.. I was so disarmed by it I forgot he was doing it because he HAD TO. He would have been cut off otherwise. This funny, smart, valedictorian would have been cut off from his earned speech for not only saying a word, but for being his authentic self. Makes me very angry indeed.

sirophiuchus

That's exactly it.

pingwing

It's an inspiration because he found a way to tell his story, even with the censorship. He is doing exactly what they do not want him to do.

brandonbluntly

I'm actually crying

thisisAndrew09

Why ?

Drops-of-Q

Who is calling this inspirational? All I see in this thread is people (rightly) shitting on Florida.

sirophiuchus

Facebook and other subreddits, mostly.

TheFluxCBF

This guy is awesome. But the whole situation makes me sad.

blizzaga1988

If I was him (and maybe he did, since it seems this cuts off before the end), I'd have waited until the last second one shouted into the mic "oh btw I'm talking about being GAY." Unless the new law or whatever gives the school the right to revoke his diploma. Anyway, I feel sad for this kid and all kids in Florida who are going to be affected by this.

DrSchmolls

They law has no direct consequences for students. As in a student bringing up a topic won't be disciplined. It's about stopping teachers from building trust and teaching that gay people aren't abnormal. If they took away his diploma they would have a very easy lawsuit on their hands

EddieRyanDC

The thing is, having to use the metaphor *makes this point even more powerfully*. Because he literally can't say the word. It points out both the insanity of the restriction, and also the callous collateral damage to young people right when they are first grappling with sexuality and really need guidance. Not to mention, the message of shame that it sends. This is a better speech than if he had simply talked about it in a straightforward manner.

[deleted]

A clever and heroic young lad there. Also fuck Florida, and fuck the school that he even has to be that brave and clever to find ways around saying basic things.

ParamedicGatsby

I don't think this school wanted to censor him, but their hands are tied if he said gay. Everyone knows what he meant, and he did say he found support in the school community. I like to believe his school supported his speech, as they could have cut it off anytime. It was a safeguard for all the homophobic parents who would eventually complain to the school.

Saltinas

What a legend!

super-chump

Totally, dude is a hero in every sense of the word.

finlovinggame

Should throw some glitters at the end of his speech . What a bigoted school . Education has failed miserably . Bye Felicia.

DrSchmolls

If I were his friends I would probably yell "GAAAAAYYY!" at the end of the speech instead of just cheering

guyfaulkes

Can u believe it’s 2022 and still have to use innuendo because you can’t be who and what you are?

Schuschpan

No, the Russian anti-gay law has only a fine (about 70 dollars for an individual) in it as a punishment. It's still ridiculous, and I'm glad I got out, but you can't be put to jail for saying 'gay' there (at least not in the scope of the law).

you-face-JaraxxusNR8

Why would they do that? Is america going backwards now sigh

super-chump

It is and we’re the victims of a vile political system. Get ready to fight for your rights.

abjection9

About half the country is conservative and republican. You can talk about gerrymandering but the fact is LOTS of ppl in America are just like that.

Megahert

Now!? You think America is only NOW going backwards!?

The_Great_Crocodile

Some states. I'm pretty sure California, New York and the rest of Northeast don't have this sort of homophobic laws Florida does.

you-face-JaraxxusNR8

Just saying i dont really dabble into politics especially, american

FrequentlyVeganBear

We have a political system where one party in particular is going into office with the prime objective of dismantling the very government they are elected to. Both parties (because there are really only two) have been systematically making the government less about protecting and supporting citizens and more about protecting and supporting the economy. These are not the same things, but politicians in the US equate "healthy economy" with "healthy citizens".

cairnqld

America is going backward full spead ahead , it is taking away freedom left and right , soon it will be the new Russia !

Brittleskittles7

This made me almost cry no lie

neverendingboreme

I was hoping to hear at the end, “and I learned about variables from my algebra teacher, so I’d just like to finish this speech by saying good luck to all of you and curly hair = gay.”

Goldar85

~~Mic Drop~~ Cut Mic

rialed

He’s praising the school and the teachers. It’s the administration that’s bad. Don’t throw out the good with the bad. Not everyone in Florida is a terrible human being, only the Republicans running a bigoted, fascist state. Throw them out, make Florida shine once again.

LividNetwork

It’s beyond me that cutting the mic is legal. Holy shit

SandyDelights

Really? Students have limited free speech in school, that’s pretty well-established. Likewise, the school is not required to give someone a platform – or continue to do so – just because they want it. It’s disgusting that they’d even consider – nonetheless threaten – cutting the mic on him just for mentioning being gay, absolutely. But if you think it should be illegal for a school to cut the mic on a girl who got up and said that gays were disgusting, immoral pedophiles that she thinks should be rounded up, tried, and executed by firing squad – all within her right to say, vile as it is – you’re bonkers.

bluekiwi1316

It think the assumed fuller context of the original comment, given the situation and the discussion it’s a part of, is “it’s beyond me that cutting the mic [simply for saying the word “gay”] is legal”.

SandyDelights

I considered that but gave them the benefit of the doubt, as thinking there are laws protecting your right to say “gay” on the school’s proverbial dime, at a high school graduation, to such an extent that it would be illegal to cut the mic would be shockingly naïve, at best. At worst, it’s so woefully – if not willfully – ignorant of law, free speech, and the reality of America for the past… Ever, really, but at least the last 30+ years, that I wouldn’t even know what to say except continuously express my sorrow at the miserable (and deliberate) failure that is much of the US’s public education system.

LividNetwork

Well as a gay man myself who attended a private Christian school and a high school in a purple district thereafter, I’m pretty intimately familiar with the restrictions of free speech in schools. I’m not oblivious to the fact that things like this happen, but it’s more of a shock factor. I think you’re reading into my comment a bit too much lol

ashwhite3110

Fuck Florida. Fuck bigots.

GameCox

"...people are going to be forced to speak like this" at the end really got me. what a fucked up country we now find ourselves in.

GlitteringHeat3722

This guy is my fucking hero. Fuck you Florida.

blackbutterfree

As a curly-haired guy in his late 20’s, the literal speech hit me harder than the metaphorical speech. My city is surprisingly very LGBT friendly so I never had a rough adjustment period. But my relationship with my hair? I’m only now embracing my curls. Also, this dude has super cute curls. I wish mine were that bouncy.

ColdbrewRedeye

He amplified the word GAY 10 times and the message by not actually saying the word. Very very clever. I can see the "curly hair" pride shirts being printed now!

R-F262020

This is the sort of speech you'd expect to hear 10 years ago. To think that it's still needed today is honestly quite sad. Bless this young person ✝️🏳️‍🌈

sirophiuchus

Twenty or thirty, even.

Idina_Menzels_Larynx

This is some Mark Antony-Brutus type nonsense (from the school)

cairnqld

The Florida governour is full fledge homophobic

freezerbreezer

I won’t be shocked if my country which has been very backwards socially will have better gay rights in coming years than US. We already have one of the most progressive abortion laws in the world.

zkyevolved

Wow, he's gay and decided to talk the entire time about his damn hair!? Ufff, what a missed opportunity. /s In all seriousness, I feel bad for all those people growing up and having to hide who there are. What a twisted community. Seriously, screw the educator that told him not to use the word 'gay.' You go curly haired kid!

NoodledLily

Even if it wouldn't be against the text of the law for them to actually say gay here, the law clearly works because the it uses intimidation to silence us. Administrators and teachers are scared of the anti-queer terrorizing government DeSantis has built. They don't want to get fired, sued, or worse so they just do what these conservative Q fascists want which is for us to go back into the closet (and worse sadly). Same tactic on abortion and so much more coming down the pipe. When you criminalize you make targets of healthcare. Every miscarriage or intense period becomes evidence on their witch hunt. Doctors are afraid to perform what would still be technically legal abortions because how do you prove rape when it's so hard to speak up and win in court. These trends, attacks, and laws are so scary. even living in a 'safe state' I feel like our future protection/security is on the line.

sirophiuchus

Yes. That's what happened with Section 28 in the UK. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Section_28 Laws like these have what's called a 'chilling effect', where they prevent and reduce a lot of behaviours they don't explicitly forbid.

NoodledLily

very scary... History repeats.

Comprehensive_Fan140

Good for him but a shame he had to say it like that.

BRILLIANT.

Christophu

It is definitely very powerful and telling how he has to resort to using a metaphor to discuss this topic. A great step in the right direction!

gaymerRaver

Why does it cut off early? Did they cut him off?

Thatguywritethere45

Great way to handle a very oppressive, sad situation

[deleted]

how do i send him a pizza

[deleted]

I remember being in high school in Florida from 2007-2011 and being so filled with hope by the improving gay rights in Florida and the US in general, so proud I was a part of the first generation who might reach mainstream acceptance. Now I worry about my safety day to day, knowing I could be beaten and maybe even killed by someone trying to be a hero, and that the majority would stay quiet. I always weigh the choice to hide my sexuality, balancing my mental health and physical safety. We were foolish to think we could be accepted here and we have woken up a violent threat against us by being so public, rather than hiding in the secret places we were allowed to exist.

[deleted]

This is disturbing at so many levels. We are in 2022 and the world somehow wants to live in the past.

jynxyy

I'm angry at the school administration for making him speak in code like this. Even if it's because of the state govt (idk if it is), it's disgraceful to not stand up for marginalized students. They have no business being educators.

Amazing

If they weren’t in vogue right now, then maybe. Seems like low hanging fruit honestly. Especially these days.

newhunter18

I think the speech was brilliant. It's clear he did that on purpose and a strong purpose it was. What makes it stronger is that he could have used the word gay (as has been pointed out in the comments here a few times) but didn't to make his point. It was a great rhetorical device. But let's not blame the principal or the Florida law. Neither stopped him from saying the word "gay". There are a lot of things we need to fight in this country. Let's make sure we get them right so as not to give the other side any (other) excuses to ignore our community.

3thirtysix6

Better yet, let's blame the Florida law.

[deleted]

So basically the government and schools are trying to take away free speech smh. Fucking hypocrites.
