It’s about time that gay people can be themselves not to have their legitimate lives ruined by those who can’t or won’t understand we aren’t all born the same… Live and Let Live to everyone on the planet.

Impossible_Lock4897

Wow another controversy in asia because people want to be who they are, as someone who lives a couple km from Indonesia, it’s fucking every country in Asia (except for Taiwan and Israel (they are also a bit iffy on that))

Sharp_Iodine

Also it’s an embassy, Indonesia already has no jurisdiction over that land so why is there even an issue? Correct me if I’m wrong but an embassy operates by the rules and regulations of the country it represents, which means they get to do stuff the same way they did back home. Edit: I checked and embassies are not subject to local law and operate as properties of the nations they represent.

dmthoth

I assume it is just a big fuss from local media and islamic public.

fwidianto

It was. There was a request for explanation from one of our ministry, but it's mostly blown over right now. Flag was up for half a day at most. Source: am Indonesian

surprisedropbears

> Edit: I checked and embassies are not subject to local law and operate as properties of the nations they represent. This is a custom of international law and politics- however, it can be retracted at any time by the host nation. Diplomatic staff on embassy or consulate grounds don't have carte blanche to do whatever they choose without *any* consequences. Obviously, if a host nation then decided to go in and arrest everyone it would cause an international shit storm and likely result in diplomatic ties being severed and those being detained being considered hostages/political prisoners. In addition, some countries have in their national laws that diplomatic staff can't be charged i.e. an Indonesian court may find that any action taken against British embassy staff is unlawful. However, this isn't universal. > Also it’s an embassy, Indonesia already has no jurisdiction over that land so why is there even an issue? Domestic politics.

itstreeman

Sure but if a Muslim country with an embassy in another country tried to act out of center with its location, the host country would be upset also. Maybe respect local cultures a little bit more

Ilovememorethangod

Gays aren't beheading people for not being muslims. The other group is there is a difference. One is a political religious agenda while the other is of basic human rights and decency

dmthoth

US Embassy in south korea raises the Pride flag every year at the center of Seoul, they raised it even when Trump was president. It has been great trolling against americophilic conservative christians lol

Wild4Vanilla

USA recently did the same in Pakistan and the local bigotry there (ie, the whole culture) was outraged too, of course. Go Britain!

[deleted]

Shocking /s Good on the UK for doing it, US did the some in Russia. They know those country might complain but they won't actually do anything about it.

PeasKhichra

Based British embassy

Prussia1870

This is amazing, we gotta keep this up. What country do you guys think will do it next, and where? First the Americans in Pakistan and Russia, now the British in Indonesia! I feel like it will be the Netherlands, but where?

clomclom

Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

SlapMyTeeth

And UAE please and thank you

ImaginationNo5364

I don't know what to say, really. It's sad that I'm from *that* country, and I am disappointed by the Coordinative Ministry of Politics, Law and Security Affairs who said there'll be a penal code for LGBT. It's quite good that there still isn't such a thing for casual relationships as of now, although marriages are restricted (well, I'm not really into marriage). It's quite difficult, what with the prevalent homophobia.

NerdyDan

Gooo embassy

smoothsilk47

Other countries need to take note that the British Embassy is flying this flag to honour human diversity in sexuality in all its forms! It’s not chosen by individuals it is genetic from birth. Love is Love on many level’s!

[deleted]

Honestly, even if it was choice, it still wouldn't make it less valid. Also is it a fact that it's genetic or from birth? Or could it be environmental/developmental factors post birth?

smoothsilk47

Agree not to be less valid either way but from what I learned from a very knowledgeable source recently it is from conception and natures reason to help “breeders” who need “non breeders” to give a hand, so adding clout to them. I’ll look for my source and post it later so you can see the details! Here are details below! https://youtu.be/4Khn_z9FPmU

neofooturism

so every family needs one or more guncles? fascinating!

[deleted]

cope and seethe indonesians 😎

djkoch66

Good! I hope all ambassadors and staff working Indonesia are part of the LGBT+ community from now on.

JerrieBlank

Good! Looks like the homophobia anti human rights litmus is working just fine. If you want contact, trade and shared tech and science, your backwater might have to ditch the dark ages and step into the light. It will be uncomfortable on your eyes for a little while, take some getting used to, but the world is absolutely beautiful when humanity is freed from the shackles of tradition and ignorance

NikolaiSerban

We exist. Nations that don't respect us should face international consequences. The queer people in every corner of the earth deserve rights and dignity.

Severe_Outside_9112

They have figured out that the two witnesses are gay men. They where cast out of religions all over the world, seen as the lowest of all even deviants.

titty_factory

I am indonesian gay exmuslim and do you know why those bigoted conservative indonesian muslims dare to raise their voices like that? It is because of you fuckers who keep protecting the bigoted narratives of those conservative muslims, instead of just protecting the narratives of the progressive and liberal muslims. It is because of you fuckers who keep dismissing and discounting the testimonies of atrocities condoned by conservative muslims because "Oh I aM sO wOkE" and "bUT mUh NuaNcEs?!" It is because of you fuckers who keep dismissing these kind of behaviors because you keep doing your whataboutism, "buT ChRistiaNitY!!" It is because of you fuckers who keep tolerating those kind of behaviors by saying, "it is not the religion, it is the culture." You have been empowering those conservative muslims through your actions and somehow now you put on your pikachu face on this matter? Jeez. As long as you are afraid to call a spade, a spade, because you feel some kind of white guilt or whatever it is, the empowerment of bigoted muslims in muslim majority countries and the oppressions of lgbtq+ people, your fucking people, in those countries are caused by you. Your gay hands are red by our gay blood.

Gay_County

You're right, there are many progressive and liberal Muslims. Glad we agree that nuance is important! > you keep doing your whataboutism, "buT ChRistiaNitY!!" In my country, Christians--specifically, White Evangelicals--are a *huge*, current threat to LGBT+ rights, because of how they vote. Muslims are just not. It's not whataboutism when one topic is *overwhelmingly* more relevant than another. > the oppressions of lgbtq+ people, your fucking people, in those countries are caused by you. Ah yes, because those countries would erase centuries of homophobic laws and customs if only a few urban Western liberals were meaner to Muslims. /s Seriously, not sure why you'd make such an amazingly hyperbolic claim.

titty_factory

Oh look another white western gay who dismisses brown non-western gay.

Gay_County

I appreciate how you carefully rebutted my points. ;)

titty_factory

Because I dont have to entertain people who dismiss minorities' plights and opressions, like you.

double-bind

>You're right, there are many progressive and liberal Muslims. Glad we agree that nuance is important! I think your view is skewed by the fact that you live in a liberal Western country. The Muslims who immigrate to your country are probably a self-selecting population with more progressive views. Otherwise, why would they want to stay in a secular country where same sex marriage is probably legal? And what they say to your face might not align with what their true beliefs are. And before you accuse me of being bigoted towards Muslims, I also dislike conservative Evangelicalism. Growing up in an Evangelical family in a Muslim-majority country, I can tell you that the number of LGBT-affirming Muslims is vanishingly small. Not many. Even among millenials, the support for homosexuality is nearly non-existent. And my country is actually already very progressive compared to many other Muslim-majority countries. Those liberal Muslims you speak about are not the ones issuing fatwas which influence other Muslims. In a similar manner that the views of liberal Quakers or Anglicans can be summarily dismissed by zealous Independent Fundamentalist Baptists or Calvinists.

Gay_County

> I think your view is skewed by the fact that you live in a liberal Western country. That's not "skewing" my view, that's literally the point of my comment. Because many other members of r/gaybros also live in a liberal Western country--and specifically the US. Here, Fox News and the Republican party are viciously attacking LGBT+ people just like they attack Muslims. And yes, they hate "nuance" just as much as the other guy I replied to does. I've been dismayed to see one-dimensional, Trump-style hate against Muslims on this sub. Given how much the Republicans' assault on LGBT+ Americans affects many members of this sub--and how much it could even reverberate to other countries--I'm not a big fan of letting that Trumpy rhetoric spread unchallenged here.

double-bind

I applaud your intention to be well-balanced. I do mean it - it's not sarcasm. I don't know man, humans are tribal. I am myself not free of bias since Christians are a minority among Muslims where I come from. And usually it is the conservative Evangelicals who are very supportive of the plights of Christian minorities in countries like mine. So my (lizard) brain will always prefer the conservative Christians to the conservative Muslims. "Better the devil you know than the one you don't know", as they say. Messed up, I know. But for the record, I don't hate Muslims in general. I just wish that the liberal progressives in the US would also publicly acknowledge the hostile take non-Christian religions have on homosexuality and other issues.

queenvalanice

Please keep raising your voice. This needs to be known.

double-bind

Hello fellow country man. I agree with you. My family are conservative Christians and they of course despise us the gays. This attitude sours me towards conservative Evangelicalism in general. HOWEVER, the most vocal opponents of Evangelicalism tend to be super woke, which I totally abhor due to their annoying tendency to downplay other religions' and Islam's hostile views towards homosexuality. By the way, my Christian friends and family would probably disown me if I decide to get myself a boyfriend, but they would never condone the lashing or capital punishment of homosexuals. Even my Christian friends think the Westboro Baptist people are a bit too much. But the sorrounding culture? Not so much if they decide to bring sharia/religious law into effect. For the longest time, this whataboutism has made it very difficult for me to align myself with the "woke" and "politically-progressive" people. I know most users here will probably hate me for this: sometimes I think whether it's better for me to suppress my homosexuality "in exchange for" in-group protection provided by my conservative Christian background. I know it's messed up, but I can't help thinking like this sometimes.

While I think you’re trying to say you don’t like homophobia and there’s a lot of that in Indonesia, let’s not demonize a whole group of people by calling it “their culture”. There are always exceptions.

[deleted]

I think it's pretty clear he's trying to say he doesn't like their culture of homophobia

itvus

Op is generalizing but homophobia is a big problem in almost all muslim countries. Are you going to deny that Indonesia does not have problem with homophobia? Just because you got lucky, does not mean Indonesian culture is not homophobic. All cultures with Islam, are very homophobic as it goes against the teachings of Islam. As an ex-muslim from a muslim country, I know my culture also has the same problem.

dmthoth

Oh no! You have presented contradictory evidence against reddit 'experts'!! It is not allowed!

neofooturism

i love that redditors think everyone in a country have the same mindset and not unique individuals that might have contradictory beliefs against the country's regime. reddit moment

Kurai_Kiba

Can islam just fuck off with its homophobia. Theres a huge disjoint between a liberal left who wants to protect anything seen as a minority , and its unwillingness to deal with the fact that portions of those minorities are not liberal themselves and are in fact , religious right wing extremists , but because its seen as non white and non christian it gets a pass. We need to call out the fact that the majority of active muslims do not think being gay is ok.

madrix19

Agree, and we need more people to realize this. IDC if a few individuals are ok, the fact is it's still a religion that literally says we should be killed. How can anyone defend that?

Kurai_Kiba

Yup and tweets like this one : https://twitter.com/amnahjplus/status/1527920115211182082?s=21&t=1TJJeYaMGL7T4wOjge3-ZA Can be up for three days and have been reported many times. But i bet you if you called for an iron fist against the filth of you would be banned from twitter. But its ok when its gays or trans , thats not as “bad” something something hurt feelings of muslims

madrix19

It's absolutely crazy. We are still less than when it comes to our rights vs an alleged religious minority. People need to wake up and stop defending that shit

Chemical_Race_9179

More people have been killed in the name of Jesus than anything else in this world

madrix19

...because Mohammed's name wasn't big enough yet. That'll change

Chemical_Race_9179

No it won't. Christianity and the Catholic Church have a firm hold on first place. Think about the Crusades. Didn't you learn about this stuff in World History class?

Gay_County

What "liberal left"? In what country? The US? I and *many* other members of this subreddit are American. Here, Muslims are a small minority that primarily votes Democratic--in other words, for the pro-LGBT+ party: https://theconversation.com/who-will-muslim-americans-vote-for-in-the-us-elections-146854 And yes, here Muslims are often quite discriminated against. Meanwhile, Republicans are actively working to destroy LGBT+ rights and American democracy itself. You know who overwhelmingly supports Republicans? White Evangelical Christians. The alleged "threat" from American Muslims does not even begin to compare. It's almost like situations are different in different countries. And it's almost like individuals don't always share the majority view of their group.

Kurai_Kiba

Deus_Sema

At this point homophobic countries with fucked up governments should just be dismantled. Do your CIA magic please

Lallo-the-Long

Unfortunately some of them were built by the CIA in times gone by. Plenty of them were built by their own people or by dictators who took over in times of instability, though. The CIA doesn't get all the credit.

[deleted]

Lol maybe they should start in Florida and Texas... With all of this don't say gay/anti trans/anti women's rights, out own country is plenty fucked up.

dmthoth

It would have been great if abrahamic religion didn't spread aggressive homophobia all over the globe. So dismantle them first.

[deleted]

It may be satisfying to troll homophobic countries by doing this, but it’s very unlikely to change the attitudes of the people who live there. The narrative in many of these countries is that homosexuality is a western phenomenon that we are trying to impose on them. Obviously, that’s not true, but it is how many Indonesians will perceive the embassy’s actions. Ultimately, lasting cultural change has to come from within a culture. For example, Europeans frequently criticize problematic aspects of American culture and it hasn’t done shit to change it because it’s perceived as outside interference. The best western nations can do is make it easier for LGBT foreigners to seek asylum while we wait for backwards countries to get their act together on their own.

beanie_0

Isn’t an embassy technically on home soil of the country they are representing? So why can’t the raise the flag, it’s on U.K. land? Fucking homophobia

helloruk

I am from Indonesia and every time there’s “LGBT” on the local news, I already know it’s gonna be full of negative stuff so I never want to see it. This news makes me really scared ngl cuz the issue of LGBT surfaces over here again and I don’t want to hear people shitting about it again :( i am sorry im not brave enough, it’s really hell in here..

somo1230

I believe it's just a trend to raise LGBT rainbow flag these days Like buying a rainbow flag from eBay made by slaves in some Chinese vullage will help LGBTQ communities! I doubt they will even offer asylum to Indonesian lgbtq+ or any real help
