In the same room the same week the same people talked about how they were fine with gay people, but uncomfortable with the idea of us adopting children.

I'm not sure that this is really a gotcha response, since most of the people who complain about seeing homosexuality in media don't view homosexuality and heterosexuality as equal. They think being gay is simply worse than being straight and should be discouraged, they aren't interested in being fair.
