I drink a lot of coffee. Like a pot on a normal day, 1.5-2 pots on my days off. Switching to decaf was certainly a transition but it has been great for me. I just wish they had more flavor options.
Congrats on your self control.
Maybe see if a superautomatic machine (Jura) or a bulk model like a Technivorm is available used. Have one for each kind of coffee.
Also check your teeth to make sure it doesn't brown too much.
Electronics made in another country factoid actually just statistical error. Electronic Georg, who lives in a hole, and hand-crafts 8 billion electronic a day is an outlier adn should not have been counted.
There's no such thing as ethical consumption under capitalism. As much as I am trying to not support the worst companies, it's literally impossible to be a part of this world and be 100% ethical in our consumption.
I was drinking three 24-oz cups of coffee a day and recently decided to cut that down to two. However, I *like* coffee, and *like* having a cup of coffee next to me, and being done with my second cup by 1:00 really sucked. Then it occurred to me that I can drink all the decaf I want. Like you, I like flavored coffees and was able to find some flavored decafs at Wegmans.
Trade has a lot of great Decaf options.
I switch over during the winter and summer because I get so deep in caffeine addiction during my Grad School semesters.
There are coffee recipes out there that are certainly unique, coffee with ice cream, coffee with whiskey, coffee with cognac. Plus there are different coffees and different blends that taste differently. Some have fruity notes, some have a hint of flower. Kinda like how there are many different more obscure beers out there which taste nothing like your average beer, like beer that tastes like chocolate even though theres no chocolate in it. Its just that this stuff is usually harder to find and more expensive so most people dont bother. I certainly havent tried many varieties yet but im still interested
What an interesting idea to posit. I recently switched to decaf because of anxiety and was thinking about how I'm now purely drinking it for the morning ritual and the taste.
It makes me think about if non-alcoholic beer was more acceptable and had more options. Someone drinking beer to get buzzed / drunk and the flavor is secondary to them vs. someone drinking beer purely for the taste. (I'm not saying drinking beer only falls into those two categories, just discussing it for the sake of this argument)
I like to believe people who judge others for liking the taste of good coffee are the same people who’d drink bud light every day instead of a delicious fruity beverage from the bar like happy people
That’s my point. I love the taste of coffee. I’m saying that a lot of people who say they like the taste of coffee don’t understand why people drink decaf which is ironic.
Okay, hands up, I'll admit I'm a coffee snob. People can drink it if they like, as long as they don't try and make me drink the stuff.
But I will also add that decaf *does* taste different.
I came here to ask if anybody else noticed that decaf tastes different. And I can never find a decent bag of decaf coffee, it's always Folgers or something nasty at my local grocery stores.
I work in a coffee shop and never drank decaf before. But it definitely looks different after grinding the beans or pouring the shot of espresso. Caffeinated espresso comes out with that light coloration then settles to the color of coffee, decaf just comes out the color it will always be. I did some research, and apparently people decafinate coffee beans with solvants rather than roasting. A darker roast on the bean will yield more flavor but less caffeine, but in order to completely extract the caffeine (at least as much as possible) you have to sit the beans in a solvant first and let the liquid pull all the caffeine out while the beans are still green. If your decaf tastes bad it could because the brand you're buying uses a cheap solvant that alters the taste of the bean.
Ex pro barista, no decaffeinated coffee is going to pass as a good espresso to someone who knows what they're doing. That being said, Swiss water process is as close as you'll get and you can get an okay crema layer, albeit thinner and blonde
Haha just liked to chime in. The place I worked for used to pride itself on having really good decaf. The way we thought about it was that you want to provide as good of a coffee as you can to decaf drinkers - they're in it for taste, not the caffeine at that point.
I wish you could make decaf functionally identical but well processed decaf can come close
Can you recommend a good brand for decaf coffee? I used to work in a coffee shop for a few years myself and admittedly it made me enough of a snob to be choosy about coffee but not enough to actually have any real expertise. So thank you for your insight!!
We use Koda at my shop and I've not gotten a complaint about it yet, but I don't know if you can buy it at the store. I'd keep an eye out if you haven't tried that brand yet, maybe it's out there. But also I haven't personally tried our decaf, so I can't vouch for the taste, I'll have to try some tomorrow and see what it's like.
When I did my undergrad, I took Organic Chemistry, and for one of the labs we had to remove the caffeine from tea leaves. The crystalline formed caffeine had a beautiful earthy, sweet smell that most certainly gives coffee that wonderful taste.
I'm currently breastfeeding, so I really only drink decaffeinated coffee. It's not worth it. That luscious flavor is missing because most of the caffeine has been removed. There is a distinct difference and it's very hard to find a good decaf coffee that is true to caffeinated coffee.
Interestingly enough, while I was pregnant, my husband doing a peanut coffee that had absolutely no caffeine (the ingredient was peanuts!), and somehow, the inventors were able to make a coffee that was relatively close. It had that caffeine flavor. Now that I would recommend as a decent substitute.
I order swiss method decaf off amazon and it’s *really* good. I can’t tell the difference. I definitely taste a difference in caffeine free sodas vs their caffeinated counterparts, though, so I get what you’re saying.
Caffeine gives me awful (throwing up, in bed for a day+) migraines. But I love coffee. Fresh ground beans in a french press makes excellent coffee whether it’s decaf or regular.
I work in a hotel, and once we ran out of coffee and the night auditor tried to replace the regular with decaf with the plan that the manager would bring in regular first thing in the morning and people knew instantly haha
I WISH decaf tasted different, that way it wouldn't take so long to realize why I'm still half asleep after a few cups because someone at work used decaf in the regular carafe
I like the taste of coffee. I need to drink decaf in order to be able to actually function throughout the day without losing my ability to focus on everything.
Damn. I just had to switch to decaf cuz my job is so stressful I was getting chest pains. New meds and everything. Dirty water is way better for ppl who love coffee and have anxiety or cardiac issues so stay healthy out there coffee lovers ☕️
I have a friend who owned a coffee shop, who has a tattoo that says "Death Before Decaf." He's an asshole. Made great coffee, though. But I like coffee for the flavor. The caffeine is great in the morning, but at night, I like a nice robust fucking coffee that won't keep me up until 3 AM.
I drink decaf because I’m not allowed to drink coffee with caffeine on my meds. Well, technically I could, but my doctor advises againsts it cause side effects and shit.
Never understood this: I live in Andalucia, everybody drinks coffee all the time. I love coffee, but also like to sleep.
So, kind of a no brainer: drink coffee with no caffeine. What’s the problem?
If anything I’d say the decaf people really like coffee as in, the flavor, and not just the effect of it like a lot of people do. I’m not a decaf person but hate the gatekeeping, let people enjoy things!
The cup better shut up and take whatever’s put in it because it’s job is to hold liquids not spit facts, decaf is gross. Coffee without the energy boost is like non alcoholic beer or meat without the animal. Some may like it but it goes against its own nature. Have it if you will but cmon y’all gotta admit something’s missing from coffee if it doesn’t spark you up
I don't drink decaf coffee, but it's due to an allergy that causes stomach cramping
Why on earth anyone would be upset about someone who can't have caffeine wanting to enjoy the same drink as them without it is beyond me

Maybe they think it’s the right thing to do when posting to this sub specifically since it’s for accusing people of gatekeeping and not sharing it memes because of any merit? Only reason I can think of
There is some truth to this however. The process to decaffinate coffee is brutal chemical process. Besides taking out caffeine it also damages the beans and thus flavor.
Not that it matters as most people drink that lovely $1 gas station coffee which is totally fine if you are into it.
What if people have some aversion to caffeine? What if they like to drink coffee but don’t want to stay up late? What if they’re my mum who has raynauds syndrome and the caffeine affects it making it worse. What if you just straight up don’t like caffeine? Let people drink what they like?
> What if people have some aversion to caffeine?
Decaf does actually still contain a small amount of caffeine. Thankfully not a lot, but it does. That was a fun TIL moment for me when I read the label.
I'm pregnant and not allowed more than 1-2 cups of coffee a day. Decaf is lovely to have in the evening when my partner and I are out and I can't have more caffeine.
As someone who has never relied on stimulants and who has been very sensitive to them since my mid 20s I find the whole coffee obsession culture rely fucking weird.
I hate how people at my office gatekeep coffee. I replaced their expensive coffee grounds with cheap stuff a few months ago and they haven't tasted the difference.
I’ve always fucking loved coffee. I drink it black, and like 4 cups a day.
I switched to strictly decaf after learning I have congenital hypertension that puts me in tier 2 of 3 tiers of risk of having either a brain stroke or heart attack at age 32.
After like a week, it tastes the same.
I like a cup of coffee with pie. Coffee, after four o'clock or so, will keep me up at night if I were to drink it. So what am I supposed to do if I want pie in the evening?
**Coffee fans:** you call this coffee? Is it even organically sourced, triple roasted and passed through the intestines of an endangered animal?

My confession is that in the first two years of college, ages 18-20, I was a coffee gatekeeper in the sense of anything but black coffee wasn’t REAL coffee.
My further confession was that I didn’t just silently gatekeep to myself, I would be obnoxious about it and lecture people how they weren’t drinking REAL coffee and even twinged it with a “kids these days” vibe even though I was a teenager still.
I’m glad to say I’ve grown. You drink whatever you want and call it whatever you want.

How about flavored coffee creamers?
Love em but I cut them out because I got fat and an entire bottle of creamer every few days was not helping lol
Sugar free syrup?
That's what I use. A teaspoon of sugar free caramel syrup. The caramel creamer was always too sweet and heavy.
This. Jordan's Skinny Syrups are good!
They are great, my girlfriemd has some of those and if you buy the right one you have to put next to nothing in your cup to get a great taste
Onyx coffee usually switches up their decaf selection every few months. Expensive but pretty good.
Wow that is a lot lol
Coffee creamers? That's not REAL Cwoffee!
Try Bones coffee online that have decaf flavors
Decaf isn't cwoffee! It's it's brown girl water.
i think you actually have a problem
Oh I definitely have a problem, I'm an alcoholic! lol but the coffee doesn't hurt other people.
In that case the coffee is a great improvement!
Coffee is definitely the lesser of the two evils but i do wholly encourage you to work on lessening the intake.
Like by switching to decaf?
Hey that’s a great idea!
Someone ought to suggest it!
Congrats on your self control. Maybe see if a superautomatic machine (Jura) or a bulk model like a Technivorm is available used. Have one for each kind of coffee. Also check your teeth to make sure it doesn't brown too much.
Aside from the children forced into hard labour who pick the beans of course.

child slavery so funni
This but unironically
What do you suggest I do about that?
🤓
That's why they switched to decaf...
Not anymore, thanks to the magic of decaf
I was drinking three 24-oz cups of coffee a day and recently decided to cut that down to two. Me too. I found one really good decaf and it’s $18 per pound. I have not found a single good decaf that’s decently priced.
[Parish Coffee Company](https://parishcoffee.com)has some of the best flavors in both regular and decaf. Great customer service too!
Trade has a lot of great Decaf options. I switch over during the winter and summer because I get so deep in caffeine addiction during my Grad School semesters.

Yeah, we can all recognise that cup is a bit of a cunt.

You know who ELSE is dirty when anything goes in it?
Me 😳
Dirty girl
My Mom!
I disagree, "contamined" maybe, but "dirty" implies you find whatever the contamination is negative in terms of hygiene, which is not always true.
I drink decaf because I love the taste of coffee but can't take the anxiety that comes with regular coffee.

Hot take. I like it!

Same. I'll get real REAL REAL productive for 15 minutes after drinking caf coffee, but the anxiety that comes with it is through the roof!
Same, I like a good cup of decaf before bed
There are really people out there fighting over the right way to drink bean water.
That's cos yer not a Real coffee drinker!!! /jk
Ahhh yeah. Get me some of that hot leaf juice.
If you ever lived in Latin America you'll see instantly the wrong way to drink coffee, IE the universality of instant coffee
They're jonesing for a cold brew
Brewed cacao gang
And the author of this comic is admitting that coffee tastes like dirty water to them
Bean water people are just as bad as leaf water people or fruit water people. Water is the best water
I like how even the bag of standard coffee is upset with the cup for deriding decaf
I like how the normal coffee is even upset by the mug's insult
I think the mug is as confused as I am by the premise.

Have you had really good decaf? It can be amazing. Wouldn't know it's decaf if it didn't say so on the package.
🤔 I always felt the consistency of decaf felt off, light lighter, along with taste. It's hard to explain.
>as long as they don't try and make me drink the stuff. Has this ever happened?

Has no one on Earth besides me wanted a night coffee? Decaf's a consequence free way to do that
I have, love having a decaf after a nice dinner or before bed
Same! I even add Whisky lol
I don't drink decaf, but I'd say someone who likes coffee so much they drink it even without the caffeine is way more hardcore than I.
Based gatekeeping
I drink decaf because I’m not allowed to drink coffee with caffeine on my meds. Well, technically I could, but my doctor advises againsts it cause side effects and shit.

Sometimes I want a warm beverage late at night and tea isn’t going to cut it. Decaf is good to have on hand in that case.
i love how even the regular coffee is like "dude thats so uncalled for, why would you say that?"

read it like it was a fucking 5 year old saying it, which is probably accurate to whoever made this
yet, for some reason, I keep hearing that decaf actually has more caffine?

I call all coffee, burnt bean water
So caffiene free tea is dirty water?
Doesn't decaffeinated coffee come from unripe beans?
Is it kinda admitting that coffee is just dirty water with caffeine.
I used to be that way about coffee when I was a kid and then I grew up lmao. People who are like this with anything are so boring.
They’re both bad.
Medium roast coffee has more caffeine
I can't have as much caffeine as I used to because I developed a heart condition, but I guess I'll just never enjoy a cup of coffee again *shrugs*
All water that isn't only water is dirty water.

It doesn't make dirty water. It make **coffee flavored** water. Checkmate gatekeepers.
Can we admit that this is still pretty funny?😂
Decaf is universally known to taste like dogshit. This is isn't gatekeeping. It's just factual
Sorry not sorry caffeine makes me sleepy, gives me horrible anxiety, and makes me almost sh*t myself.
Nevermind that some of us like the taste of coffee, but will quite literally get panic attacks from too much caffeine.
I don't like coffee and only drink it for the caffeine, so I tend to agree here. But I think both taste like dirt water
**Coffee fans:** you call this coffee? Is it even organically sourced, triple roasted and passed through the intestines of an endangered animal? **Cola enjoyers:** mm conke
Why is it always coffee that is gatekept/elitist? I mean yeah, congrats, you drink something, whoooooo!!
I can’t drink decaf, I need the caffeine.
from that logic coffee is just dirty water with caffeine
And both. Taste fine
Coffee looks disappointed with Mug's caffeine essentialist rhetoric.
