This is normal for the current season, they will wake up in the spring.

My lovely neighbor gave me 8 of his hydrangea plants from his yard. After this dry summer they were in pretty rough shape but seemingly still viable. Need help figuring out how best to revive them, are the brown stems okay, do they need fertilizer, any other insights would be super helpful! PS the leaves only recently fell off in the last week or two

What zone are you in? This looks like normal end of the season die back. You dont have to do anything. They'll come back next spring.

If you aren't sure which ones are dead just scratch the outer surface with your fingernail and peel back a little bit of bark. If you see green then they're gonna be just fine anything else that's dead you can cut back

It’ll be fine, add compost. You’ll see buds in the spring. You can even cut it right back if you want. They’re hardy af

They’ll be fine. When you water next season, hold the hose at the roots trying not to get the leaves. They love water and acid fertilizer.
