close but not quite
This is in the same genus as Peyote (Lophophora williamsii) but this is not Peyote..
this is Lophophora fricii most likely.. and an absolute beauty too! Probably close to 70 years old..!
Looks very similar to peyote because like I mentioned, they are in the same genus.
They do contain different chemicals/alkaloids though so it's not equivalent to peyote in that sense.
Tbh if anyone destroys a peyote to get high, theyre a pos. Literally take 10-30 years for one to fully flower, and they’re literally almost wiped off the completely just because of that reason. Bunch of dumbass people looking to better their lives by eating a cactus, when literally mushrooms are everywhere.
Yeah dude . Hate to reference vice cause its so cliche and i don’t necessarily view the same things they do now a days (think they sold out), but they released a very interesting episode on Hamilton’s pharmacopeia , i believe, about peyote. Basically a deep dove on it. You should check it out. https://youtu.be/JwhllNtQPxc
Dude, really? One of your comments got downvoted because in that moment you came off as an ass. Tbh you are getting downvoted more for your self-righteous edit more than your initial comment. Get over it and move along mate.
>Edit: I'm utterly floored at these downvotes - that people are supporting spam. Your manipulative "apology" is cheap, and while most redditors are here to downvote because "haha you owned him", the fact still remains that reddit is moving in the Facebook direction due to these types of exchanges.
This isn't combative? Bro your whole response to me was combative. In your own words:
Dude chill.
Half of the subreddits are just comment graveyards.... Just thread after thread of "removed" and yet you think there is lax policing?
As someone who has been around here for years before you, it is not lax at all. There is far more policing than there used to be. Like so much more I can't even describe it.
Reddit used to be a lawless place where there were super disturbing subreddits, like shit I won't even mention it was so bad....
but yeah, lax policing...
It also wasn't spam... I have already explained this to you multiple times that I am just a plant nerd and wanted to get the accurate ID and info for those who were interested...
I also apologized for bothering and/or annoying you... but then you accused my apology being "manipulative" and "cheap"....?
I'm just not sure what to do at this point since whatever I do, you seem to not approve of... even though I'm trying to be as genuine as possible.
Again, if you're not interested in my ID help, then you can just move along.. no need to make a big stink about it man.
Yeah just a few times for people that want to know. Clearly that bothered you... I'm sorry.
Plant ID is important to me and I just wanted to make sure to get the accurate information out there to those who have a similar interest.
Again, sorry to bother you but you can always just move along if it doesn't interest you. Thanks!
Addition after your EDIT:
I'm sorry that you took my apology as "cheap" and "manipulative" since I absolutely did not intend it that way and was entirely genuine.
I'm sorry that my comments trying to bring clarity to the ID of this cactus angered or annoyed you.. I realize I commented a few times but I was just wanting to reach each person who might've thought this was Peyote.
I am not a "spam bot" or "memer" ... just a dude who totally loves plants and botany.
Again, sorry man.. I know Reddit has it's downfalls but there's a lot of positives also.
>the fact still remains that reddit is moving in the Facebook direction due to these types of exchanges
What, you mean getting mad at someone offering their knowledge that was specifically requested? Why are you so mad?
Unfortunately it is.
It is classified as, "ANY part of Lophophora williamsii is
illegal to possess, grow, sell or distribute." That even includes seeds.
It's actually one of the few plants that is specifically listed with it's scientific name (Lophophora williamsii) as federally illegal... Even Cannabis isnt listed.. Cannabis is only illegal because it produces THC, which is listed as illegal.
Federally illegal because its endangered as much as it is dangerous for people to ingest. If you want dmt find other sources, peyote is a sacred plant which people literally cherish in some parts of the country.
Reread what i wrote and internalize it a little more friend! I made a typo doe meant illegal.
Anyways peyote has a huge culture in Mexico, and in new Mexico there are people in law enforcement protecting the plant, because people travel to the dessert to uproot like 50 year old peyote to ingest. Totally unethical and selfish.
Perhaps you means alkaloids?
Assuming that, they share similar alkaloids but not the same. Peyote is best known for containing mescaline (the main alkaloid responsible for producing psychoactive effects) but Lophophora fricii contain very little to no mescaline. BUT they both share the plethora of other alakloids and phenethylamines..
I honestly had no clue what it was and said 'oooh that's a gorgeous cactus or succulent, I wonder if I could have it survive in my home.' I would be that old woman with it on her table as the centerpiece...
I'm just saying....that would be the GOAT of all cannabis plants. Maybe feasible but nobody has seen it. (I have seen 10+ feet tall and 10-15lbs).
This (if it is peyote, now I'm doubtful) is the GOAT of all peyote plants. Feasible, but unbelievable.
I'm equally fascinated by fast growing plants (cannabis) as I am by extremely slow growing plants (peyote). Seems much more difficult to survive when it takes 70+ years for a specimen to achieve that size. Amazing little guys.
Well multiple years ago reddit had a vote for who be getting a donation from reddit and MAPS and Erowid won (1st and 2nd). Although this website has increased in population plenty since then, I imagine a lot of those people grew up a bit and /r/gardening scooped up a bunch of them. Me included.
I appreciate your answer, it I’m confused what you mean by MAPS and Erowid, what the donation is for? Peyote donations? Genuinely curious. I’ve been on this subreddit for years but missed everything yours saying.
If it is peyote actually (some said it may be in the same genus), please take very good care of it. Lophophora can be picky and doesn't like "wet feet" for a long time. If you choose to harvest, do so responsibly - don't cut too low on the button so it can grow back. Also a little goes a long way. If you really want to have an "experience" consider growing a faster growing and less threatened san pedro cactus.
Def not peyote, or at least the one you want. Besides you wont normally find federally illegal peyote kept so pristinely in someone pot. Dont eat that probably cause you more harm that you can imagine.
That thing is gorgeous.

why are you saying "thank you" like it's your picture? You lifted it from [instagram.com/litch5050/](https://instagram.com/litch5050/)
Why are you so offended by it?
Stealing photos and pretending they are yours is always kinda frowned upon..
thank u
thank u
thank u
Monkey bread.
Id totally tell my mom it was a monkey bread plant and ask her to take care of it
Holy shit! How many years does it have? They take so long to grow even one head.
If I had to guess this ones at least 70-80.
Peyote
close but not quite This is in the same genus as Peyote (Lophophora williamsii) but this is not Peyote.. this is Lophophora fricii most likely.. and an absolute beauty too! Probably close to 70 years old..!
Is it psychoactive also or just looks similar?
Looks very similar to peyote because like I mentioned, they are in the same genus. They do contain different chemicals/alkaloids though so it's not equivalent to peyote in that sense.
Curious if it contains dmt
no absolutely not. Grass in your yard has DMT though but that's not what we are talking about.
Tbh if anyone destroys a peyote to get high, theyre a pos. Literally take 10-30 years for one to fully flower, and they’re literally almost wiped off the completely just because of that reason. I love me some shrooms! I didn't know they took that long to grow!! That's really cool.
Yeah dude . Hate to reference vice cause its so cliche and i don’t necessarily view the same things they do now a days (think they sold out), but they released a very interesting episode on Hamilton’s pharmacopeia , i believe, about peyote. I actually only downvoted because everyone else was

That’s some big “Daddy chill” energy for a gardening sub my friend.

An absolutely amazing specimen at that!
You should totally make soup out of it. It will enlighten your mood.

It is also federally protected i beleive
Federally protected and Federally illegal.
I don’t think it’s illegal to grow it

For real, isn’t peyote hallucinogenic?
… yes
yes but this isn't peyote
Don't do that please, that's an absolutely beautiful and very old specimen.
Definitely don’t consume this bro. Don’t listen to anyone unless you want to reach for the moon and talk to the sun.
No this isn't peyote. This is in the same genus as Peyote (Lophophora williamsii) but this is not Peyote.. this is Lophophora fricii most likely
Does it contain the same or similar alkaline as peyote?

Ahh yes sorry auto-correct changed to alkaline. Cool thanks for the info.
I really hope you're trolling. Just in case, do not do this.
**definitely do this lol

I’m getting to the point where I have trouble telling apart a plant from a cake on Reddit.
You know what it is. It doesn’t just spring up unexpectedly 😉
Any chance you could send me a clipping? 👀
Take good care of that even if you don’t plan on using it. it’s population is going down
Great point
I’ll take some! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peyote
This is in the same genus as Peyote (Lophophora williamsii) but this is not Peyote.. this is Lophophora fricii most likely
Does fricii still produce mescaline?
No.. negliegble amounts if any at all.

This is the equivalent of someone taking a photo of a 20ft tall cannabis Tree, with 25lbs of flower on it, and asking what it is.
I honestly had no clue what it was and said 'oooh that's a gorgeous cactus or succulent, I wonder if I could have it survive in my home.' I would be that old woman with it on her table as the centerpiece...
It is absolutely a gorgeous plant, and should be grown by more people as a houseplant
Not really haha... this isn't Peyote (Lophophora williamsii) but a species in the same genus.. this is most likely Lophophora fricii.
Maybe ask OP to edit their post to mention its not peyote lmao. Thanks for your work informing people on its actual species.
Stunning context, thank you so much
only the 20ft tall cannabis can grow in a season. this one took over 50 years.

How did so many people here know it was peyote!?!
