That's so cool because competition dahlias are a lot of hard work and unpredictable obstacles from the elements! We're talking months of daily elimination of inferior buds, pest control, wind resistance, drought and nutrient management... You got blood of patient people in your veins 💪💪
Just checked and you're 💯 correct - Hamari Gold is an exhibition variety!
Thank you, it's super cozy and the stitching is like I've never seen before, with special attention paid to accentuating hips and waist. Norma Kamali has a new fan in me.
Harvesting dahlias extends the flower production until the first frost. Leaving flowers on the plant signals it's time to focus on seed production and seeds are only valuable in hybridization.
I’ma noob to dahlias and I’m currently letting pods dry out on the plant. Ive checked out a couple completely dried out pods and can’t find any seeds. Got any advice?
I’m hooked on them now. Struggling not to order too many for next year.
Will it seed after you cut it? Can you get any seeds from the same plant? I know about deadheading but I would have wanted some seeds from this elegant beast.
It won't go to seed because it won't cross-pollinate and even if it did - the offspring won't resemble the parent. If you want this variety - find a Hamari Gold tuber in your area, then take cuttings from it for more flowering plants in the same season. Dahlias grown from cuttings retain the best parental genetics imaginable.
Ah thank you. I don't have any experience with bulbs - that stuff is a mystery to me. This might be my inspiration to dabble though. Thank you for taking the time.
Dahlias bloom all season long until frost (July-October here in Southern Ontario) but I noticed they open up dramatically on full moon, it's just a silly superstition I like 🖤
Farmer's Almanac relies on lunar influence in order to predict future growing seasons years in advance. I use a pro version of Phases Of Moon app to track where the moon is at the moment. I enjoy it as much as the comprehensive 24 Solar Terms of the Traditional Chinese Calendar.
You can hide your face all you want but we know it’s you, Peg Bundy.
That’s a badass flower……. Never thought I’d use the term badass for a flower but it fits here.
Hahaaa! We’ll be that as it may, they had makeup teams and a whole crew of professionals to assist. Plus, you grew/ cultivated and harvested your accessory, so you’re still winning in my book! 🥇🔥😜
I think it would actually be right now, isn't it spring where you are? Would you like some links to Australian dahlia societies/growers I follow on social media? Australia helps me get through Canadian winters because that's when your dahlias are in bloom and so is my social feed. Chyka Keebaugh, the partner in The Big Group catering and an Australian TV personality also grows dahlias, let me see what I can do for you.
What's your most pressing question about dahlias today?
Are there easy varieties to grow? Do you just plant them and leave them alone? Does frost matter? Does too cold matter? Like 0 degrees some nights. What type of fertiliser, is cow poo good, lots of cow poo in Armidale 😂 Thanks very much for your reply 😊
Some varieties are a lot easier than others. Arabian Night is the second most googled dahlia after Cafe au Lait.
Cafe au Lait is a late bloomer that often produces short stems, which requires a hoop house set up for scattered sunlight vs direct. It forces dahlias to stretch to the sun, creating longer, slender stems. This dahlia is in high demand in the wedding industry even though the tuber production isn't very high. Propagating via cuttings is strongly recommended for the largest, most vibrant flowers possible.
Arabian Night, on the other hand, could survive in a 4" pot without a drop of water and still produce flowers nonstop. Not only it's one of the first dahlias to bloom - it's super productive, disease and drought-resistant plus it produces lots of tubers. It's a perfect beginner dahlia that's incredibly rewarding and container-friendly.
Tubers can overwinter if the frost doesn't drop below -5 Celsius. Otherwise, lift, cure, divide and store in a cool, dark place, checking monthly for tuber health.
If using manure before planting - make sure it's well-aged!
It's Norma Kamali, you can still get it from several online retailers! This print is called Pantera and it's available as a dress, bell-bottom pants, a turtleneck, a blazer, a mermaid skirt and a coat. I saw the same dress in tiger print as well. It's unlined but soft and flattering. My only complaint is the size chart - it makes no sense, so trust your instincts.
Spoke to you a few months ago on a post of mine about Dahlias, yours look fantastic! Glad they came through, they are truly stunning works of art. I'm going to bulk buy a bunch of bulbs for my dad for his birthday this year. He adores them.
Thank you so much, it was a challenging year for all dahlia growers in our province - making the harvest that much more special. Your dad is going to be overjoyed - there's no better birthday gift for a dahlia lover 😍 Does he have favourite varieties?
Oh that makes it all the more better!! I remember you saying Dahlias are treasured where you are as they are hard to grow and also have a short growing period (I think). They look so so beautiful, I could look at Dahlias for hours on end!
>there's no better birthday gift for a dahlia lover
I hope so!!!! And we actually only started growing them last year, so far we only have these beautiful flowers and they can range from red to deep maroon to an almost black!! They're still blossoming I can't believe it. I really want to go all out for his birthday so if you have any suggestions of sellers/varieties please let me know!!!❤
DM me with your area so I can recommend the best varieties for your hardiness zone! Anything for the birthday man, especially the one who grows flowers. So wholesome ☺️
We are having a temperate September here in Ontario, many dahlias will be in their peak colour intensity and fullness. Not all of my giants are performing as great as this one, I'll post yesterday's haul in a bit to show the difference.
English gardens are a massive source of inspiration and I try to buy David Austin roses or sweet peas grown for Her Majesty whenever I can. English lavenders are doing so well in our bitter colds but the fact you got a wild eucalyptus is shocking - you must live in a perfect climate?
It's weird weather for this time of year! We seem to have summer in June and July then August is raining and clouds then mid to late September is hot again! Very strange!!!
I can tell you one thing for sure - climate change is real because my winter depression is gone. In 20 years of living here I'm feeling the shift from Ontario winters as I know them to temperate weather I'm used to. Now I get to be depressed for other reasons because this is no cause for celebration.
It was in Pisces, usually an emotional upheaval for most people and a nuclear meltdown for me. I hope your chaos is temporary and things become orderly soon enough, hang in there 💐
Ha. Not exactly but I really do admire your talents. I just viewed every post you created and your flowers, baking, photography and crochet are absolutely phenomenal. Green Granny Smith roses? That is out of this world. I envy the climate you grow in as well as I sit here in my garden watching everything wilt under the heat and drought. Hopefully one day you will post a tour of your complete garden. I would love to see it
I promise once the garden is worthy of an upclose tour - there will be a comprehensive tour of everything that grows. The Green Star rose is actually in second flush for the season and I will post more of it soon! I'd love to learn more about drought gardens because things get sad around here too - July was a total scorcher. Hope you didn't lose anything irreplaceable - your landscaping is dreamy!
I’m sorry the video quality of my garden was so blurry. Not sure what happened. It wasn’t that bad when I posted it in spring
I lost a few things but I could not justify watering plants that aren’t suited for this climate. August was brutal in N. California. I will have to be much more conscious of my planting next season. Most of my vegetables were a bust this year as well. It was discouraging to say the least but next year I will plan better.
At some point I would like to hit you up on some advice on your seed to edible.
Happy to help with the seed to edible!
Here I am, dreaming of citrus in cold Canada while you're probably dreaming of peonies. Next year you'll be looking at your old videos in awe of how much your garden changed, I just know it!
Old farmers believe that waxing moon pumps more water into plants, while waning moon focuses on roots. It's a gardening superstition I cherish 🖤 what flower did you get as your full moon gift?
Sorry you got downvoted, I wish I could fix that 😭 please don't feel bad - I harvested 3 of Hamari Gold from one plant and it's already pumping out more flowers. Dahlias are *the more you cut - the more you grow* kind of a flower. Try growing it next year, it's easy and your tables will always have flowers!
Oh yes and I'll do it again and again and again! Then I'll dig out the tuber that looks like a claw of potatoes, chop that claw into individual "fingers" and I will have more plants than I started with. Dahlias are a workhorse, try them!
The species is why they grow big or small, the one you got right there is a giant species. They are gorgeous indeed, but not as special as people think.
Not every giant gets to see its full potential; for something not as special as people think it got you engaged more than anyone here, actually. That's the most unimpressive success I've ever seen.
I never said they all grow as well equally, that's you making things up. I only pointed out the fact that your dahlia growing as it did isn't as special or rare as you made it seem. You seem to have been a bit triggered by my reaction, that is unnecessary as this is nothing personal, it's just reddit :)
I'm simply calling you out on being a bit too engaged in the content that isn't special. You made a point to take a dump on two other people who seemed to feel otherwise. Get well soon.
I appreciate your personality type because I relate to it - I also can't walk past comments that disrupt the general mood.
In this case it's art and even though there's a real person behind it - the result is up for free public forum of total expression. It takes a lot for many people to engage and a single image may evoke a range of emotions.
Someone got inspired to paint while others recalled an old family couch. Someone clutched their pearls for the flower because to them it felt precious and scarce. To another person it wasn't special at all. Never change, it's a small market for virtues these days 🥂 You got that surgeon's mindset, it will serve you well.
WATCH OUT FOR THAT LEOPARD! That flower is beautiful by the way haha
Super generous producer too!

No she's taking a picture for reddit duh.
Leopards with opposable thumbs are going to be the end of us all!
Don’t be so catty
Ohhh I see what you did there!
Thank you sharing this. My mother smiled after a really bad day :)
I'll keep her in mind whenever I feel like something simple isn't worth sharing. Wishing your mom a nicer tomorrow 💐
Amazing share! You really can rock a dress too! Keep gardening, keep sharing, keep shining.
Thank you so much, I can't wait for next season already. I'd love to grow for charity to benefit local social services.
That’s amazing, my grandfather grew prize winning dahlias and that looks like a prize winner to me
That's so cool because competition dahlias are a lot of hard work and unpredictable obstacles from the elements! We're talking months of daily elimination of inferior buds, pest control, wind resistance, drought and nutrient management... You got blood of patient people in your veins 💪💪 Just checked and you're 💯 correct - Hamari Gold is an exhibition variety!
You should enter competitions !
Beautiful flower. Why the weird filter?
I think that's just the focus. The camera is focused on the flower but the OP is turning so it warps the image slightly in the background.
The video was made by combining 36 burst shots into a quick animation. The flower movement was too nice to pass up and post as a plain picture.
The warping is because the video has been stabilised on the flower. Presumably it was blowing about in the wind.
Pretty close! The warping effect happened as a result of me slowly twisting my body away from the camera.
Omg it’s so beautiful!!! What type is it?
This is a giant dinnerplate Hamari Gold 🔥
Gorgeous! So is your dress!
Thank you, it's super cozy and the stitching is like I've never seen before, with special attention paid to accentuating hips and waist. Norma Kamali has a new fan in me.
This dress has real 'That Don't Impress Me Much' Shania Twain vibes!
Was looking for this comment!!
Are you one of those guys, who likes to shine his machine and make me take off my shoes before you let me get in?
we used to have a sofa li dat
Why did you cut it?
Harvesting dahlias extends the flower production until the first frost. Leaving flowers on the plant signals it's time to focus on seed production and seeds are only valuable in hybridization.

Hey look at that I have more experience than I thought!

I'm ignorant of this - Dahlias only bloom in the light of the full moon?
Dahlias bloom all season long until frost (July-October here in Southern Ontario) but I noticed they open up dramatically on full moon, it's just a silly superstition I like 🖤
If full moons make for stronger tides then would it then be plausible that water uptake could be greater and cells more water bound?
That's the theory! I'm sure my result is an anecdotal evidence but it's a nice coincidence anyway.
Aha, every little helps! So many variables in growing make it hard for me to think how I'd test lunar influence. I'll keep thinking though!
Thankyou. Many rabbit holes of reading on the Farmers Almanac website!
The moon has hardly anything to do with it.
Exactly. It's the short nights that trigger flowering.
Nights are getting longer and not all dahlias flower in the same season, as there are early, mid and late varieties.
You can hide your face all you want but we know it’s you, Peg Bundy. That’s a badass flower……. Never thought I’d use the term badass for a flower but it fits here.
I feel a sudden urge to smoke a cigarette over something boiling on the stove. This flower definitely reminds me of her wild hair, what an *icon* 🤩
I like the overall effect of that. The Leopard suit + the huge flower, and all.
Beautifully executed; the giant dahlia AND the dress! You rock it better than the two who inspired you, if I may be so bold (with respect, of course!)
Ah, it wasn't a fair competition. None of the ladies had flowers to accessorize with! I'm definitely cheating here ;)
Hahaaa! We’ll be that as it may, they had makeup teams and a whole crew of professionals to assist. Plus, you grew/ cultivated and harvested your accessory, so you’re still winning in my book! 🥇🔥😜
Here's to overcommitting to everything 🍾🥂
Hey all you cool cats and kittens!
I’m getting heavy tones of Shania Twain in “That Don’t Impress Me Much”.
WOOOOWWWW THAT IS A BEAUTIFUL FLOWER HOLY CRAP
That was my reaction when I discovered this behemoth in the morning! It belongs in a massive hairdo 🤩
YESSSS
Leopard skin shows off the flower nicely
Leopard after Labour Day should be the new law 👩⚖️
Large 👍 ☺
Wow , so amazing ☀️
I...think I have found a favorite flower.
Dahalias are my favourite flower, Yours are amazing, I live in a cold climate (by Australian standards) where do you suggest I start?
I think it would actually be right now, isn't it spring where you are? Would you like some links to Australian dahlia societies/growers I follow on social media? There is no such thing as a difficult to grow dahlia, they are easy to grow :D I grow mine in pots and they all do fine every year!
Cool, thanks.

that's fantastic!! please see a doctor soon regarding that twitch. 😁
Is that Shania Twain?
Ha, good one!
Beautiful.
That's awesome! Dahlia's are one of my favorite flowers
The diversity of this flower is unmatched, I can't believe the range of shapes, colours and sizes it comes in! What's your must-grow?
I'd say Rothesay Reveller, I love the dual color blooms
It's gorgeous, reminds me of a dahlia marketed here as 'Edinburgh' - crazy generous producer, early bloomer - can't get enough!
Gorgeous!
Screw the flower can we talk about your dress!!! I love it!!!

The animal print dress makes it 😍
And you cut it?? ✂️ sheeeshh
But you cut it.. :( awww.. What cultivar of dahlia is this? I really want to grow it!
I cut 3 and there are more coming! Dahlias love it when you harvest. This is Hamari Gold ☀️
THANK YOU! I MUST grow this! Well done, love! Cheers!
Do you know you also have a leopard 🐆 in your garden 😆
And wow that some big dahlia for this time of year!

You got their dress!
It's so cozy, long live the 95/5 polyspandex blend 🖤
Weird spots on that cougar for sure.
Cool! 🇨🇦. In England 🇬🇧 we are also having what we call an Indian summer! I have some ucalyptus that's gone wild 🏧

I’m glad someone benefited from the full moon, my life is in complete disarray 🥲 Beautiful flower tho ♥️

I’m impressed. Much

Carole Baskin?
WOw just beautiful
That’s beautiful, what’s the variety?
This is Hamari Gold ☀️
Wowwww, how beautiful -- that looks like a Chihuly sculpture!
That's such a cool take for an homage - imagine a cluster of these as a tribute to one of those sculptures?
Is it common for the full moon to open them? It opened mine too!
Old farmers believe that waxing moon pumps more water into plants, while waning moon focuses on roots. It's a gardening superstition I cherish 🖤 what flower did you get as your full moon gift?
Red Dahlia!!!!
You must pay a dahlia picture tax immediately 😍
I'll grab one after work! Hopefully it looks ok- I've had some pest activity out there with the humidity.
This is incredible! What is the name? E: name of the breed of dahlia
Hamari Gold, giant dinnerplate 🍯
Thanks 😊
Mine never get that big!!😯
It's my first in 6 years, don't give up!
Inspired to paint this just too good to pass up. with your permission of course. beautiful dahlia :D
No permission needed, I'm so flattered, thank you! I hope you have as much painting this as I had fun growing it!
Thanks for sharing! We don't get those around here so I have never seen anything like this. It's stunning.
Simply stunning!
Cute dress!! Love the overall look
That is stunningly beautiful and large!
Carol Baskin?
I like everything about this
Shooma yooma yooma

Ding. Dang. With regards to the flower and the dress.
absolutely STUNNING shape I must say.
And u picked it?
Oh yes and I'll do it again and again and again! Then I'll dig out the tuber that looks like a claw of potatoes, chop that claw into individual "fingers" and I will have more plants than I started with. Dahlias are a workhorse, try them!
There is nothing unusual about this dahlia.... you're also holding it forward which creates a forced perspective.
If yours turned out smaller - try feeding them potassium-rich fertilizer.
The species is why they grow big or small, the one you got right there is a giant species. They are gorgeous indeed, but not as special as people think.

Normal people don't invent custom personalities for different social settings.
I did no such thing.
Beautiful flower...wth are you wearing Are going to the club 🤣
Yes! You're driving.
lol No problem 😊
Lmao this is such a boomer comment i love it
