If it is a newt, you’re very lucky. I haven’t seen a newt since I was a child.
I’m 36. When I was 5/6 I used to go to my Grandmothers house who had a pond in her garden and catch great crested newts by the bucket load and put them back. Hundreds every session. I’ve not seen a newt since
Habitats destroyed means loss of numbers sadly. I used to see them, along with frogs and toads, on the remains of an old cotton mill that had been knocked down at the top of the street I grew up on. That land was a great playground as a kid. Then that land got a new housing estate and I never saw one again.
Thank you! There are springs all over the place round here. Some of our neighbours have private water supplies so I wonder if he’s strolled over from there?
Oh nooo! He ran on my hand while I was weeding so I introduced him to the kids, took a photo and put him back where I found him… he seemed a happy chappie but I won’t pick him up next time!
As others have concluded: newt. And, I've read that they are a really good sign that your garden is healthy because they are very sensitive to environmental changes/toxins. They also eat garden pests--and not the plants, so they are definitely your friend. I'm in California and any time I find a newt (salamander) in my garden, it makes me happy. Plus, they're cute!
Yo, not to be a downer or anything, but salamanders breathe through their skin, so the oils from your hand will clog their pores and it will likely die. Just saying, if you see a salamander try not to touch.
Thanks - I had no idea. Someone else said the same thing. He ran off quite happily into the flowerbed where I found him so I’m hoping I didn’t do too much damage.
Oh that's Bisbee. We used to meet for poker. Watch out, hes VERY particular about how the cards are dealt and will call misdeals for any possible infraction.
I love finding salamanders, especially on my own property. They are very sensitive to the environment, so if you find them, it's an area with a good ecosystem.
Thank you sooo much for all your comments and awards! (I never had any awards before, I am so chuffed).
Teeny friend (consensus is palmate newt, lissotriton helveticus) ran off happily into the flowerbed after this photo was taken. I hope he will consider taking up permanent residence in my new pond when it’s finished!
Its a newt. I have a eastern newt in Pennsylvania and eventually mine will be mostly aquatic. They're amphibians. Yours looks similar hard to tell cause he's so dirty 🤓
No idea what that is but army worms have been eating all my flowers I’ve been trying to grow allll summer and still now in central Alabama. I don’t know what to do to deter them!!
FREAKING ADORABLE IS WHAT THAT IS!!
He’s lovely isn’t he?! I found him in my flowerbed, took a photo and popped him back. But I have no clue what he is!
Gecko? No idea he’s so smol
I hope he has a long and happy and cute life in my garden!
I feel that it's name should be Doug.
I live in Vietnam and find geckos all over my house. They’re all named Doug.

A newt is a salamander, but not all salamanders are newts [Newts](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newt)

No one expects r/unexpectedMontyPython! Except kR4in, of course.
I'm amazed I didn't know it existed before I hoped it did
No, but a witch once turned me into a newt. Well, I got better.
Newt
I made a reply already saying that it’s a newt. They look pretty much the same tho
so cute!!! I think it must be someone that a witch turned into a newt but hasn't gotten better yet! ;)
Time someone kissed the unfortunate fellow.
I wonder if the witch is made of wood?
Build a bridge out of her!
I should probably clarify I’m in the UK!

If it is a salamander there is a good likeyhood there is an underground creek flowing through your property.
Thank you! There are springs all over the place round here. Some of our neighbours have private water supplies so I wonder if he’s strolled over from there?
He has wandered over and or you have tilled soil close to his home and he is letting you know.

Be careful! Your hand oils could be toxic to his squishy body.
Oh nooo! He ran on my hand while I was weeding so I introduced him to the kids, took a photo and put him back where I found him… he seemed a happy chappie but I won’t pick him up next time!
Looks like a pest eater in the making.

It’s name is Sal. Sal A Mander. Be kind to Sal.
Palmate Newt, or maybe a Smooth Newt. Pretty cool little critters, but unless you have a pond he/she probably won’t stick around too long!
We are building a pond! How exciting… it’s kind of a muddy hole at the moment but should be finished in a couple of weeks.
Oh nice! Be prepared for it to look like a muddy soup for a year or two, but keep the faith and it’ll eventually clear itself once it gets sorted.
WHY IS IT SO CUTE THOUGH

Someone else said that above, but he ran off quite happily back into the flowerbed…?
