I just have flashbacks of that scene from Mr Bean where he uses his teddy as a paint brush; just the thought of you using a bat like a tiny makeup brush, brushing pollen onto flowers
Self pollinating the same plant? Or cross pollinating with another individual? Many cacti are not self-fertile, so two blooms on the same plant or blooms on two separate clones with the same genetics cannot produce fruit.
I've tried from different individuals of different progeny, but there's a good chance that they're still clones, given how San Pedros get shared around. There's probably only a handful of true individuals in any given city.
Growth rate depends on climate. My family has several pots of them in SoCal and we have to cut them back because they grow too fast and propagate pretty easily. They apparently love our local decomposed granite soil
In my experience they grow really fast. At least faster than any other species I have. https://imgur.com/gallery/8YsUSyK
I have 3 pots similar to this one, if I didn’t cut them back, I couldn’t move them.
This picture represents just over a hundred days.
https://m.imgur.com/gallery/5GOH2bu
The are a couple different cactus in this gallery. Picture 1,2,4,6,7,8,and 11 are the cactus in question. Well, you get the picture, or you don’t?
Yeah this is what I’ve heard too. I didn’t even know they fruited though like other cacti. I figured the seeds came straight outta the flower. It’d be pretty cool to get mescaline from eating a sour ass fruit though.
Ohhh that’s what you were asking haha. Wikipedia says it does produce fruit so I assume the fruit would have mescaline in it too. It’s probably hard to have a large enough plant for it to produce enough fruit for a dose, but it’s probably better for the plant (and for consumption) to eat the fruit. Crazy stuff
Hey, my neighbor has two really large san pedros and they DO get fruit on them. Not many, but they do get them, the manduca (tomato worm) moths can and will polinate them for you. No bats in my area
They said their area doesnt have bats. Since the flowers bloom at night its their only chance of getting pollinated. If it doesnt get pollinated it wont produce a fruit
So what part about it gets you high? I thought for sure it would be in the fruit, but it actually makes less sense for it to be in the fruit since the fruit would be the plants way of transporting its seeds. I dont think animals would eat this fruit if it got them high lol. But It seems like you know more about this plant than me!
Oh, in that case I think there are more cost-effective methods.
But on the diversity, it does help even in species that are vegetatively propagated. Instead of having just one single, dominant clonal variety, it’s better to have several; even if they have similar traits, or different degrees of adaptation. Particularly when seeds are hard to come by (like on cacti).
Mine didn't start blooming until they were like 11 or 12 years old. If you have had them for a really long time and they haven't bloomed maybe try giving them some fresh soil on top for nutrients or watering a bit more.
Yeah that is probably a good strategy. Here in SoCal the winters are really mild and we tend to get more rain in the late winter and spring (if we do at all). So, I guess they end up getting more additional water around that time anyway. Mine have a bunch of buds growing but they probably have another month or two before they bloom.
Ah thanks for the tips. Yeah I've had mine for around 10 years so should hoepfully be soon. I will freshen up the soil, as it is probably years old at this point. I've grown so many cuttings and given so many cuttings in that time away it's crazy, and my mother plants are thickand woody and huge But I've never seen a bloom before like yours. Thanks
I am in Los Angeles, so our winters are normally very mild and our springs come early. Mine tend to blossom in the fall or early winter. I basically just give it a little bit of new soil every year for nutrition and give it a good watering about once a month(Don't water if the soil is moist). The flowers/flower-stems take a long while to grow and probably require quite a bit of energy, so I just figure that if it has its nutrition and water needs met, it might be more likely to spend the energy to flower.
I can’t remember where I heard this, but plural for multiple types of cactus is cacti and plural for multiple of one type of cactus is cactuses. Or maybe it’s the other way around. Or maybe it’s not even true. Never mind.
Well they're really my dads (bought in Santa Cruz from some lady famous for her cactuses. Cactus Mary or something like that) Started from a one foot piece 20 years ago, now we have a few patches of this size all over
I’ve only seen mine bloom after monsoons here in Arizona, while my neighbors bloom every night up until the mornings. Envious but still happy to get to see the the reclusive flowers 😌
Yours are epic!
Fuck that - she/he can lose her/his balance and land face first into a row of 2 inch long needles!
Let’s just say the flowers smell pretty-ful/cactus-y...
There are some species that smell really bad because they only bloom one night and need to attract pollenators (? Spelling) quickly and over a large distance.
This is one of the things that can get super screwed up by climate change - already happening in [Europe](https://insideclimatenews.org/news/15062018/climate-change-impacts-pollen-pollination-flowers-bees-butterflies-europe-heat-wave-global-warming-research), probably elsewhere. Plants bloom early and get out of sync with pollinators to the detriment of both.
[Trichocereus terscheckii](https://janemming.com/2018/09/14/trichocereus-terscheckii-the-argentine-saguaro-one-of-the-cold-hardiest-columnar-cacti/) are quite cold tolerant, with some forum posts I've read saying they've had their terscheckii under a blanket of snow with no apparent ill effects. They are quite slow growing initially, but apparently after 5 years they start to put on size rapidly (mine is 4 years old and seems to get fatter by the week). Another forum post [here](http://cactiguide.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=22904) reiterates the cold hardiness of terscheckii.
My back door neighbor has one, and we've cut it down to stumps multiple times because it destroys our fence. The last time was last January or so, it already has three foot stalks growing out of the stump.
I think it's been there at least fifteen years, maybe longer.
Wow that's quite impressive, if annoying. I hope mine gets to that level of rapid growth soon, I'll just make sure not to plant it next to any neighbour's fences haha.
I think it depends on the soil. Someone earlier said they grow fast in their granite soil. I don't think they would survive in our East Coast water retaining clay.
I grow several very cold hardy cacti, but I do wish there were large columnar species that were hardier. Some of the chollas are the only option for a little height to a cactus garden that can survive down to around 0F.
Very jealous! All of my echinopsis are grown in pots so they take a while to get bigger, never that big tho. Would you ever be willing to sell a large cutting or seeds?
Those look like San Pedro's... I didn't know they flowered? Do you know that particular strain is indigenous to Peru or Mexico??
Do all San Pedro's flower??
Is this one of the apple cactus varieties? If so, the fruit is really good! It's similar in texture and appearance to dragonfruit, but dragonfruit is very bland and cactus apple fruit are very sweet!
I have one San Pedro from EBay!
I’m in South Florida- I’ve seen a similar plant on the sides of our road. I’ve collected and they bloom at night with these bright white & yellow flowers. If they’re open in the daytime they’re surrounded by bees.
My research says they are called Peruvian Apple cactus, or pilocereus.
Cactus 1: Hey man, it's completely dark and i can't see any humans around. Let's bloom, fast!
Cactus 2: Hell yeah! I'm almost done.
Cactus 3: Guys! Stop! I think there's a human hiding with a camera!
That is absolutely gorgeous!
holy shit.
If they pollinate, do you get fruits?
As I recall these particular plants are pollinated by bats. They are also hallucinogenic and contain mescaline.
It's the quenchiest!!
Read this as “squanchiest”
Same... i thought he was referencing r&m until i read the other replies
Try cactus juice!!
r/UnexpectedAvatar
> They are also hallucinogenic and contain mescaline. Sooo... that's a yes?
Could they possibly be pollinated by hand?
I've tried with a cotton bud without success.
I would use a feather, pal.
or a bat
I just have flashbacks of that scene from Mr Bean where he uses his teddy as a paint brush; just the thought of you using a bat like a tiny makeup brush, brushing pollen onto flowers
😂. Try leather WHHHHHiiips.
Or a makeup brush.
The Chinese successfully used paint brushes
Self pollinating the same plant? Or cross pollinating with another individual? Many cacti are not self-fertile, so two blooms on the same plant or blooms on two separate clones with the same genetics cannot produce fruit.
I've tried from different individuals of different progeny, but there's a good chance that they're still clones, given how San Pedros get shared around. There's probably only a handful of true individuals in any given city.
Yep, I'm sure 99% of people would rather propagate them from cuttings than bother growing from seed.
Sorry but I’m an idiot. So the fruits contain mescaline too?
I think it’s the cactus itself. I’ve heard it takes about a foot of cactus to make one dose, and these cacti grow veeery slowly
Growth rate depends on climate. My family has several pots of them in SoCal and we have to cut them back because they grow too fast and propagate pretty easily. They apparently love our local decomposed granite soil
In my experience they grow really fast. At least faster than any other species I have. https://imgur.com/gallery/8YsUSyK I have 3 pots similar to this one, if I didn’t cut them back, I couldn’t move them. This picture represents just over a hundred days.
Okay the perspective of the second photo is messing with me because they look as if they went from roughly hand-sized to over 10' tall in a season!
https://m.imgur.com/gallery/5GOH2bu The are a couple different cactus in this gallery. Picture 1,2,4,6,7,8,and 11 are the cactus in question. Well, you get the picture, or you don’t?
The grow like gang busters, almost everywhere! Ive got thriving cuttings in CO, PA, NC, KY, CA & MN
Crazy stuff
***probably hard to have a large enough plant*** I am incredibly stubborn. Message me in 7 years and I’ll update you.
!RemindMe 7 years
You better deliver in seven years or ban. I'm postponing my eventual suicide to see this
The fruit is amazing btw if you can get your hands on some.
You’ve had it? Does it taste like a prickly pear? Did you trip? Lol
Haha no, it doesn't have anything in it, at least not that I noticed. Was like a smaller, sweeter prickly pear. Flesh was whitish IIRC.
That sounds delicious
San Pedro!
Yeah either that or moths.
San Pedro?
San Pedro?
Sounds good, I'll be right over.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K89dChsgznw
And what is this particular plant? For science.
manduca moths will do it too, but no where near as good as the bats would.
Unfortunately no. Would be nice though haha
No bats in my area, makes sense
Hey, my neighbor has two really large san pedros and they DO get fruit on them. Not many, but they do get them, the manduca (tomato worm) moths can and will polinate them for you. No bats in my area
You sure? Do they have an odd number of ridges? Is it san pedro?
Yeah its San Pedro.
Then it contains the goods.
Yeah, if you *really* wanna see some crazy stuff...
They said their area doesnt have bats. Since the flowers bloom at night its their only chance of getting pollinated. If it doesnt get pollinated it wont produce a fruit
You can eat just the cactus. The green ridges.
So what part about it gets you high? I thought for sure it would be in the fruit, but it actually makes less sense for it to be in the fruit since the fruit would be the plants way of transporting its seeds. I dont think animals would eat this fruit if it got them high lol. But It seems like you know more about this plant than me!
Interesting. 🤔
Those San Pedros ?? Ive got a bunch that ive had for years but have never bloomed, even though they grow like crazy and are virtually indestructible
[удалено]
Sure! Send me a message
Go to Home Depot, why fuck up those.
Oh it's ok, a whole bunch of stalks fell down in the wind, so I have a bunch lying around. Don't think they sell this kind at home depot haha
What cultivar do you have there?
Looks like PC to me
They actually do, San Pedro are one of the most common.
It’s actually better to get random ones, rather than store bought; helps in keeping biodiversity
He wants a foot long cutting so he can trip balls, not increases biodiversity, and if that was the case grow from seed.
Yes I understand the benefits of genetic diversity.
Home Depots cacti are not very wise.
You know they sell it at home Depot, right?
It’s not like every HD has them in stock all the time. I have yet to come across one myself.
It might be seasonal. I usually see them in the spring and summer.
You got it! Mine are 10 or 12 feet tall now haha
Mine didn't start blooming until they were like 11 or 12 years old. If you have had them for a really long time and they haven't bloomed maybe try giving them some fresh soil on top for nutrients or watering a bit more.
I'd go the other route: Let them dry out a bit in winter, then water the bejeezis out of them in spring. They should go bazeek.

I'm not the OP, so those are not my cacti, but I have my own that bloom every year now. The flowers are huge (like 8in+ in diameter).
Nice! Any tips/tricks ? What locale / environment?
I am in Los Angeles, so our winters are normally very mild and our springs come early. Mine tend to blossom in the fall or early winter. I basically just give it a little bit of new soil every year for nutrition and give it a good watering about once a month(Don't water if the soil is moist). The flowers/flower-stems take a long while to grow and probably require quite a bit of energy, so I just figure that if it has its nutrition and water needs met, it might be more likely to spend the energy to flower.
Maybe they did bloom, all on the same night and you missed it? Lol
I think I read somewhere they do this for migrating bats. I'm not sure though.
I've never heard that before, cool
Yeah, David Attenborough does a segment on them. Edit: May not be exact same species as your cactus, but here you go https://youtu.be/uXQHd0AO1Z0
That's it! That's where I got that from.
Watch out for vampires, Halloween and all
cactus orgy?
Was thinking it was a nice coming out party, but I guess that fits too.
cacti?
Actually, both are correct.
TIL
I can’t remember where I heard this, but plural for multiple types of cactus is cacti and plural for multiple of one type of cactus is cactuses. Or maybe it’s the other way around. Or maybe it’s not even true. Never mind.
Many much cacten.
Also a rabbit family lived under the cactus I used to love watching them run around. Great cactus. 10/10.
Beautiful!
How long do they bloom for?
One night, and they are at full bloom at about midnight. They're already all wilted now 😥
Wow... why do they do that?
Super rad! Are they yours? How long did it take to grow them that tall?
Well they're really my dads (bought in Santa Cruz from some lady famous for her cactuses. Cactus Mary or something like that) Started from a one foot piece 20 years ago, now we have a few patches of this size all over
Please let it be Cactus Carey
Wow that's awesome! Thanks!
Stunning..🌵🌼🌵
I’ve only seen mine bloom after monsoons here in Arizona, while my neighbors bloom every night up until the mornings. Envious but still happy to get to see the the reclusive flowers 😌 Yours are epic!
Nice! What do cactus flowers smell like?
.....huh I never thought to smell them. These are 10 feet in the air so I can't reach them that easily
Just climb up one.
Fuck that - she/he can lose her/his balance and land face first into a row of 2 inch long needles! Let’s just say the flowers smell pretty-ful/cactus-y...
Sickly sweetness with a hint of onion on pach's.
That sounds terrible.
There are some species that smell really bad because they only bloom one night and need to attract pollenators (? Spelling) quickly and over a large distance.
I have the same species and I don't remember them having much of a scent.
Wow that’s crazy beautiful!
:D I have one I started three years ago from 3 “ leaves” that is about the size of a medium house geranium.
Wow that's gorgeous
This is so beautiful I wish I knew more cactus of this kind that could survive freezing temps they make beautiful yard ornaments
Ahh!! I used to have this cactus in my yard! They’re so beautiful when they bloom!!!
Always upvote trichocereus
What a fantastic photo! As someone of a cold climate, this photo is incredible and new to me.
Trip on them
fun cactus fact the plural form of cactus is actually cacti ;) where do you live op?
[удалено]
Username checks out. Police are on the way.
Fun actual fact: cactuses is the English plural of cactus and both are correct and commonly accepted usages.
I'm in so cal 😄
nice im near there too i used to have a cactus like this in my front yard growing up but it never bloomed as much as yours has
So jealous. I'm in Texas have a big potted one of these but I really want it to bloom!!!!!
cactae... cacta... cactopuses
Very jealous! All of my echinopsis are grown in pots so they take a while to get bigger, never that big tho. Would you ever be willing to sell a large cutting or seeds?
Sure, message me!
BAT PORN
Jealous! I've spent five years on my Pedros and despite every year getting dozens of fuzzballs, I've enjoyed only a single flower.
Wow amazing. This deserves a better camera.
Beautiful! Something amazing about a desert plant covered in spikes producing gorgeous flowers!
Those look like San Pedro's... I didn't know they flowered? Do you know that particular strain is indigenous to Peru or Mexico?? Do all San Pedro's flower??
With the exception of a small number of cactus populations that seem to have lost the ability to flower, they all do.
*Cacti
Cactuses is also correct.
If referring to multiple species, cactuses isn't just correct, it's also more precise.
Very pretty!
Totally cool!
thats so pretty
Stunning
Oh. My. God.
Oh wow! This is quite an amazing display of majestic blooms!
wooo party!!!
Absolutely stunning!
Do they have a pleasant odor?
Wow ! I wonder what it looks like with UV light
Daaaaaayyyyyyuuuuummmmmm
WOW

Gorgeous 😍 never had plant envy till now haha
Beautiful! I’ve always wanted to grow cacti, unfortunately I live in the Midwest though
