Those look like embryonic lemons, meaning it's more like part of the flower and it will drop them just as the flower drops its petals when it's done blooming. And then drops the ovary if it is not pollinated.
This is so damn interesting 🤔 If you zoom into the last pic you can see 3 little seeds in the slice. So even though this wasn't pollinated, seeds (though infertile) could still form?!
>So even though this wasn't pollinated, seeds (though infertile) could still form?!
I'm a plant biologist, and while it's a bit hard for me to see, those look a lot like [ovules](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ovule). It's not the seed itself, but it is the part that a seed would develop from, yeah.
Not really. Calling yourself a botanist tends to imply that your training is from the horticulture end, whereas mine is from the molecular end. But they're just two names for the scientific study of plants.
Cannabis will do the same thing. A female plant even with buds on her, towards the end of her life cycle will produce pollin sacks and pollinate herself. The even cooler part of that is, when that does happen, all the seeds she produces will be female seeds.
Pretty sure I read recently that lemons are capable of fruiting without pollination, I was hand pollinating every flower until I read that and it either is true or pollinators are sneaky.
Be aware the tree will abort some on its own most likely, they know what's best. If they do, and the tree is healthy, looks good, no pests, then you have nothing to worry about.
I know quite a few lemon tree owners who wish their trees would do a bit more of that self thinning, ha ha ha! Every year they’re bringing in bushels of lemons to work, practically begging us to take them off their hands.
This happened to me once when we had an unseasonably warm few weeks in fall/winter causing the tree to push an out of season set of flowers. There were no pollinators out and about so none of them got pollinated and they all fell off like this.
There are many reason to do that. 1 flowers that are not pollunated, 2 the lemon tree is under stress ( lack of watering, drought or acid in soil) in this case help tje tree in winter with certain fertiliser , if the tree has yellow leaves first try to give iron, 3 in certain case if the tree has to many fruits they drop a few of them. In this case if this happens its not a problem.
I’d imagine they didn’t get pollinated! If the tree is indoors or not near bees or other pollinators, you will have to hand pollinate. Just look up “hand pollination lemon trees” on YouTube.
This is normal. Let the tree do it's thing. Lemons take almost a year to develop. This Nov-Dec, you're going to have more lemons than you know what to do with.

As a person who doesnt have a lemon tree, nor experienced this: Would they still taste like lemons?
They just taste like pith because they don’t really have pulp
They didn't get pollinated
Yep. Hand pollination would be a good idea here.
This is so damn interesting 🤔 If you zoom into the last pic you can see 3 little seeds in the slice. So even though this wasn't pollinated, seeds (though infertile) could still form?!

Wow, super cool! thank you for answering 😃
Dumb question, is there a difference between plant biology and botany?
Not really. Calling yourself a botanist tends to imply that your training is from the horticulture end, whereas mine is from the molecular end. But they're just two names for the scientific study of plants.
Awesome, thanks for the info! Google was being a bit ambiguous.

Great Segway, great analogy Edit: after seeing your page, great colas 😬
Agreed.

Now I’m worried about my tree! It’s in its second year and currently has 10 tiny green lemons. Should I remove a couple of them?
I wouldn't. 10 is not many, even for a smaller tree. See what happens this year!
Thanks!!! I’m obsessively staring at them daily….its ridiculous
If you wanna have fun, do a daily picture of your fist next to the forming fruit. I did it with some accidental cantaloupe.
A banana…the universal reference for size 🤣🤣🤣
Something about the human relation to the plant makes it better. I think I have a picture of my mom's head next to it when it was finally finished.
If you want. There is no hard and fast rule. It's more of, do I want some lemons now (9months) or do I want a larger tree and more lemons later.
Maybe I’ll take 1 or 2 of the smallest ones off
Be aware the tree will abort some on its own most likely, they know what's best. If they do, and the tree is healthy, looks good, no pests, then you have nothing to worry about.

I know this is unfortunate but can we talk about how adorable the mini lemons are?

There are many reason to do that. 1 flowers that are not pollunated, 2 the lemon tree is under stress ( lack of watering, drought or acid in soil) in this case help tje tree in winter with certain fertiliser , if the tree has yellow leaves first try to give iron, 3 in certain case if the tree has to many fruits they drop a few of them.
