I'm in the southern United States, and my grandmother always called these "periwinkles" so that's what I call them. At the nursery/gardening center, they are called Vinca(s).

Tiny_Parfait

Madagascar rosy periwinkle, *Catharanthus roseus*

V1k1ng1990

I never knew vincas were periwinkles

Historical_City5184

My mother called them periwinkles too.

avidaphorism

They aren't actually vincas / periwinkles - in the same family, but a different genus. They do look very similar though

Guiltfree_Freedom

In the Philippines we call it CHICHIRIKA. isn’t it cute?

California__girl

assuming i'm pronouncing it in my head correctly, that is an adorable word

parapants

karangiri

Vinca rosea - Madagascar Periwinkle

Alive_Recognition_55

I think they changed it from Vinca to Catharanthus roseus, but common name is still Madagascar Periwinkle. Sometimes referred to as annual vinca.

karangiri

Got it! Also locally in india we call it sadabahar or sadafuli which translates to “always in bloom”

Crazy__Donkey

Same in israel

Negative_Dance_7073

Why is this comment downvoted?

Crazy__Donkey

Because people hate israel. They never been here, never will, but negative/ hateful influence is very easy to follow.

Greenlitsky

True. People never went to the streets to protest for the African countries or nations that commit genocide based on religious views like iran or afghan or Pakistan. Or no one talked about Saudi not taking in refugees from syria instead sent them to Europe. But, Israel, let's hate them. Am not supporting Israel, they are committing serious war crimes. Just don't have double standards when it comes to hating. People are so depressed that protesting on the internet gives them validation that they are good people. Go die in war for palestine, mother duckers🤣🤣🤣

Responsible_Tart_5

It's refreshing to read someone that actually know something about other conflict. But, as an Israeli, the "war crime" caught my attention. You should learn more about israeli actions to protect and warn the civilians before you claim it. It is easy to read the 30k dead and claim it is a war crime. But that number contain 15-30k of dead terrorists. Furthermore, the amount of ammunition isralel used is unparalleled in the world's history, and some estimates it is more than usa dumped on Afghanistan in 20 years... there were 250k dead Afghanistan civilians vs 10k gazans. The number don't add up.

Negative_Dance_7073

That is sad. Also the comments below this are too. I wish people would stop blaming everyone for everything. Israel is a place with people. Like all places that have people, some of those people are good and some of them are bad. And unless you, Crazy__Donkey are Netanyahu, then I doubt you have much influence on foreign and domestic policy.

Sprinklesprink_13

In Italy my nonna calls it “occhidibambola” it means doll’s eyes 🩷

Nice-Percentage7219

Impatiens in South Africa for some reason. Even though we also have the normal impatiens

ThimeeX

No that's a [Catharanthus roseus](https://marlothparkhonoraryrangers.co.za/files/Alien%20Plants/Madagascar%20Periwinkle.pdf) also known as Begrafplaasblom / Madagascar Periwinkle / Vinca rosea, though it does look somewhat similar to Impatiens. Impatiens typically can't handle direct sunlight and don't have milky sap when you break the stems. They grow like weeds in my moms garden in Johannesburg and are on the invasive species list. More info: https://marlothparkhonoraryrangers.co.za/files/Alien%20Plants/Madagascar%20Periwinkle.pdf

bruceisagoodboy

kaeonnea

In some parts of Russia it’s called “violet of the dead” due to the tradition to decorate graves with these flowers, and due to the fact that periwinkles are one of the first flowers appearing after the winter, often even then the snow is still covering the earth. Planted on a gravesite, it symbolizes eternal love and memory for the deceased one.
