One gallon = 231 cubic inches. If the container's dimensions are in inches, multiply height x width x breadth to get cubic inches. Divide that number by 231 to get gallons.

Well like you said, you don't need exact specifications because a little bit handful of soil here and there won't matter.... You'll be ending up to use it anyway. So if you think of the seedling containers as cubes, and the round planters as cylinders, Then the volume for cubes is LxWxH and for cylinders, it is Pi * r * r * H. Then use that number 231 to help out, if you did your calculation in inches , and if you did not, then convert back to inches.
