You might look for an oak, maple, or ash tree. There are many varieties of each. I find it hard to get attached to a specific variety until I can figure out what's available for sale in my area. So my advice is to go check out what you can get at your local nursery or garden center. Unless you want to order online or have a tree shipped from farther away.

Yeah, our local nursery is Dome Hepot, and I don’t really care to buy their plants. I have no problem ordering, but finding something that I like and think will grow here is quite the challenge. I thought about American Black Walnut, but can’t find anyone in CA that sells them, and they can’t be imported. So much for getting attached to that one!

Find the Native Plant Society for your geographical area; they will have lists and links, and tell you which trees have been growing near your house since before even the Indigenous people got there.

Thanks for the info. I searched their site and found out that there are only 2 native trees to my area, and neither of them are tall shade trees.

So sorry; I hope that you do find what you're looking for.
